hey people
after seeing a lexus V8 in the back of a kombi and hearing the note of the engine i love it!!!
anyone have any good sites on this conversion and secondly my question about the renualt 5 speed which is making its way into a few kombi's anyone know anymore of it??? i think bris conversion are making a kit?
cheers

dellow and caslemaine rod shop both do bellhousing kits to fit the 1UZFE (lexus 4.0L) V8 to the Renault R30 gearbox.
awesome conversion! the renault box handles it no worries according to the guys at www.carbontech.com(.au?) who make the lamborghini replicas using this combo.
the diff can be flipped with no major drama other than the speedo drive on the box no longer mating, but as VW uses the speedo off the front wheel anyway it's no big deal.
you can get a 1UZ front cut from a Crown or Soarer for under $2500 these days which gives you every electrical gizmo to run the motor complete, all you'd need is the renault box and fabricate the mounts and linkage. apparently the 100mm kombi CV's mate straight up to the R30 drive flanges, though I don't know if the width of the box is the same.
The renault box you need is designated as an UN1 gearbox, and is found in the R25, R25 turbo, R30, Audi 100 and Audi 80 (I think) as well as some renault vans. some are LSD and asll have different ratios, so some time with google is needed.
top idea for a kombi conversion! you'd be damn hard pressed to find a better combo I recon.

To date I have killed with this donk
3 x 9 " usa diffs
4 x trick usa autos
4 x tail shafts
2 x trees
1 x river bank
3 x rear ends snaped
2 x usa drive shafts 4 k +
4 x usa stub axels 6 k +
6 x tyers
2 front ends
and the toyota has not stoped once 😀
to let you know when you go to the bank !

Andy42 ·
What sort of money do these boxes go for
seagull ·
the gear set cost 4 K + shipping
the box is hard to find , mmm my shed has two !
seagull ·
The r30 box cv these are made 2k +
you must under stand this IS BIG HP No bull shit Our stock donk eats a 5.7 holden donk no problems !
kombi_kid ·
these engines produce around 190Kw right???
seagull u dont reacon the box will handle the power of the V8???
cheers
rhys
seagull ·
you the diff that I have replaced ,we went 500mtr snaped the pinon like a carrot ,you can not buy any thing better in the world .I have seen many blown boxes ,we have raced ours for three years now .The r30 will not stand the power !!!! thats why I have the renault turbo gear for sale .DONT WAST YOUR TIME LOL !
seagull ·
made to manual shift bolwn that up gee I have lost count now .
kombi_kid ·
well obviously i will not race my kombi just for cruisin in and occasionally spinning the wheels (being 17 you do these things) so yer it would handle it ok then hey?
cheers
rhys
seagull ·
would give you that boost , so would the MR2 1.3 turbo kit to kombi 😀:thumb:party
Secoh ·
are you sure it's a UN1 box and not a 359?
359 is R20 and won't cope with huge power.
even ford 9" diffs will break when given enough abuse.
kombi_kid ·
ok so i wont to look for a R25turbo box or the R30 box???
you dont know what cars these came out of do you?
cheers
rhys
Secoh ·
if you want to use a renault box, then you want a UN1 box, not a 35x box. UN1 is from Renault 30, Renault 25 turbo and a few others
Renault 20 and Renault 17 etc used a 35x box and it will not cope with big power.
kombi_kid ·
thanks again i will get them pics over to ya ASAP
cheers
rhys
seagull ·
I know some on that has the R30 box grafted the 9" to it and wears it out in one race ,as the 2K clutch plate .
racing costs $$$$
I found you a box secoh its in the for sale postings seagull
kombi_kid ·
use guys must race hard!!!
cheers
rhys
Secoh ·
seagull thanks I saw that, it's about $1500 overpriced for me though.
how does one graft on a 9"? if it that sort of thing isnt done to very fine tolerances it'd last 30 seconds.
abuse will kill anything too. a G50 would last no longer.
seagull ·
This car is Wa number one ,It not abuse mate its HP I try and a photo of it .It is no where close to me but I will get there one day . If you find a R30 close ratio box ,get two I have never seen one for a 1K the gear set we have is worth 4K ( it is new ) the box does brake ,the 2ltr turbo renault motor we had build would not go far with out shiting the R30 ,there has been many that tryed over here . The box also had oil injection fitted .
They are not strong at all !!
The 9 " conversion is IRS power turbo V6 nissan .
Secoh ·
I suspect your comparing apples and oranges in what most of us want to use one for.
I've had enough. you people make up your own freaking minds and do your own fokk3n research.
seagull ·
i agree may your R30 box come at the right price and you never have to pull it apart
if you do find on for a 1 K let us all know seagull :jesus

so far I have a R20 359 box ($200, came with a complete car which I sold $200 of bits off) and I have lined up a audi 5+5 5sp transaxle in a complete driveable and registered car for...you guessed it....$300.
neither are as strong as a UN1, but for street use or a light car on the circuit they might be fine. And a damn sight cheaper than $2500.
we'll see. this is all meaningless until I have one in the car and am flogging the arse off it.
1303Steve ·
Hi
Slightly of the subject, those front wheel drive Merc vans have a 5 speed transaxle in them, wonder what they are like, strenght and ratios wise.
1302Steve
Secoh ·
apparently the ratios are pretty wide, but someone said they were actually one of the reccommended boxes, though I can't remember if it was UN1 or Audi 016. For some reason UN1 rings a bell....
wacked1 ·
Hey guys found this for sale, it's not mine, by the sounds of this thread it's cheap if he still has it make an offer?
Renault 25 (UN1) gearbox
Clean box come out of wrecked car.
$1600 with one drive shaft and 2 stub axles.

Ok so lets talk Box's
I see the UN1 is the pick for some but I have to ask why ?? With a 3.88 diff centre electronic speedo sender anmd gear ratios that don't really seem what I am after.
The UN5 seems liek a better option. It take 300 honest HP and still goes strong. Has a 5.85 diff with a good set of 5 speed ratios and a 0.683 5th gear. LSD is also availible and a good option. As they come out of the Reno Master Commercial Van they have seen some heavy work already an dproven themselved quite strong.
AT 720 mm long with 220 of these being face to center of axle and 500 from centre of axle to nose cone and aside cable shifter there are a few small problems with the conversion. Namely an extra 200mm to cope with ..
But I have seen them fitted so it can be done. Cost wise I can get them all day long at $1650
Here it is in a Kombi ..
seagull ·
I was quoted 3K at xmas time
the gears are wide apart ????
Adapter plate MMMM here we go again ! another late night in the shed .
Can you get some mesurments of the belhousing on CAD ?
I do some asking over here as to there bad points ,ok seagull
kombi_kid ·
so thats what was in that bus i wasnt sure of the box that was in it (secoh this is the one i said i had pics of!)
whats the distance from the bellhousing to the centre of the CV???just curious on where that extra 200mm is!!
cheers
rhys
Secoh ·
Gee, thanks for telling us this sooner!! :P
Has someone already made a bellhousing for them, or do I still have to do it from scratch?

a 5:1 diff is good for offroading, but it's the last thing I need in my racer project, a 3.8:1 is closer to what I want, but I'm trying to gather as much info as I can.
Where are you getting these from?

I'm having drama with the kombi box in my bus.
I've got a holden 3.8 v6 same as Ron (wacked1) had. can the renault box be used here?
You say you can get them for $1650, I guess that is just for the box.
how much do you reckon it would cost to get fitted?
Or would I be better off rebuilding my Kombi box? it's already got Albins 3rd & 4th, just get Albins 1st & 2nd and a super diff?
wacked1 ·
1st point. Cheaper, if you already have it
2nd point they can take a lot of crap, if done right. Speak to Albins see what they recommend, I’ve been in Indians 3.8L supercharged V6 and he gives this thing hell and it’s held up for 3 years he has approx 300 to 350 HP
3rd point you don’t have to pay to have it installed
4th point you don’t need to buy or manufacture a new adaptor
5th point you don’t need to get it engineered
6th point if you blow a Porsche or Renault box expect to pull the $$$$ out of your A$$
my point is if the 2l kombi box is built right in the first place with the intended use in mind the kombi box would be your best bet. I spent big dollars on the G50 sold it because it was going in a $ 500 kombi, used the money from that to purchase another kombi and a 915 which after talking to the right people will cost a small fortune to install, just do the homework and decide what’s best for your intended application.
Bill Croft of unicap engineering at landillo in Sydney’s west is a great guy to speak to he has a lot of time to give to people and has been in the off-road business for years. If you look at the off-road sites you can get something like this !!
Full race 2LT box PRICE: $2,600
2LT race box with super diff not assembled PRICE: $1800

The UN5 and UN1 boxes look very much teh same. The UN1 has additional ribbing around the bell housing though.
The 200mm from mounting face to centre of flange is not extra it is the measuremnet. You can bolt a Kombi bellhousing onto an adapter plat which then bolts to the box. This is what Volks Engineering look like they are doing when the fit the 5 Speeds Reno boxes to the kombi.
I have done a lot of research into the UN5 as it was going to give me very good ratios in the Manx with 34" rear tyres. Then I stopped .....
Why ??
Well as Wacked1 said COST $$$$$ I worked out I could build a 091 ( 2L kombi) transmission for about the same cost and it was going to last longer and be easier to install and setup.
If it fails I will be going UN5 as the next option. 5 Speed would be nice but cost and simplicity is also an issue.
I have seen a lot of big ass engines bolted to 091 Boxes and they seem to hold up quite well. I am not talking race cars here I am talking street driven weekend warriors cars.
Baja Wes ·
As I have stated in my other post, I am running the 091 kombi box.
A super diff is cheap for a kombi box. The later vanagon era gearboxes came with a 4-spider diff, a factory superdiff. So I bought a vanagon 4-spider diff for $200 and had it put in my 2lt kombi box. The only other thing I did was add an albins 0.70:1 ratio 4th so I can cruise on the highway.
I haven't broken it yet, but I don't dump the clutch at 8,000rpm either.
kombi_kid ·
ok so it all sounds alot of work but nothing impossible!!! what would a gearbox with all albins gears in it with the super diff set me back?
cheers
rhys
Secoh ·
I emailed Albins, he said for the 091 box the 1st and 2nd gear cluster was around $300 and 3rd and 4th was around $600 (depending on ratio)
then you have to assemble it (or pay someone to do so if you arent able) and possibly change the diff if it's worn or you want LSD, as well as all the usual bearings and gaskets etc.
I had a big think about my project, and decided it'll probably be towed everywhere so I can get away with no 5th if I use a tall 1st, a tall 4th and keep the ratios close inbetween. Also I don't have to make the bellhousing, or find a suitable clutch for the undersized race flywheel I'm, using.
It'd still be a good option for a kombi road car I recon, but it's appeal in the beetle is fading.
anyone want to swap my 359 box for a kombi 2.0L 6 rib? 🙂
