VW Vs Wives, GFs, partners etc...

Hi all,

I maybe opening a can of worms here but here it is...

How do people deal with the fact that your partner (male or female) doesn't share the same interest in classic VWs as you do? :bounce

i like the ikea dollars...

Hi

My wife used to like bugs, hates them now, now she wants me to grow up and get a normal car.:vader No way.

green,
Don't get me wrong, I get away with heaps, it just costs me lots. I surf generally twice a weekend as well as the 1302 resto.

The secret is to find a facet of your hobby that your partner enjoys. Be it the doin' up, the cruisin, the shows, or droppin' her off at Ikea whilst you go to the Nationals.

Years ago she resented how much time I spent on the computer for work. That was until I found some chat rooms with topics she was interested in.

In all these things you got to know where the line is and find a balance to ensure you don't stray over it too often.

lol, GL1972 exactly...

she loves to drive them ("the cruisin"), so it guess its not all bad!... plus now i find her on the puter more and more nowadays, on forums to her taste!

GL1972 路

This year looks like I'm dropping her and the tribe off at the Easter Show while I go to the proper show. She can have a fistfull of dollars for her and the kids and I can have a fistfull of dollars for the swapmeet!

My wife-to-be doesn't hate my bug, just that she would prefer to sit in a car with air-con and be able to drive it...

She grew up in a family that adores Honda Civics! :cry

haha. girl comes first, but luckily my current, although a holden fanatic is happy to put VWs no.2 on her list. (even showed up un-announced to a show i was at a while ago!)

Can of worms, never.....but it could become a good study for someone......

...well trying to deal with it with each 'new' partner!!!:jesus

If they are another enthusiast then there may be a conflict of interest...their's and your's......time spent on who's...etc....

Want to cruise together but in who's...does one's own ride get neglected?馃檨

Does time, if it happens, heal all?

Then, does a non-VW person...even a non-driver cope any better.....especially if they are computer illiterate and read too much crap about the flirting/cheating that happens on the internet? Argh!!! Ok...the love of VW's can happen....they become good at spotting for you, know where all the VW's live on the routes you take, know when one is missing.........can be supportive to some extent...even have a passing thought of owning one馃槑.. they don't seem understand that you are only talking to fellow enthusiasts online..... or looking for that rare and much needed find!!!

Maybe female Dubbers have it different??? We are a rare breed...women into our cars!!!

Hmmm, maybe we can turn this into a study??!!!馃槈:jesus

OK, other factors come into play I know......馃檪

Bel my beetle was bought by my late husband and I...she was going to be our project...now she is mine...I love her...so not a normal tale....Jon loved to tinker with her....and we had plans. I still do!!!:sandrine

Anthiron 路

well my girl doesnt like VW's but we both like Fords so thats an upper.....and im also buying a ricer in about a month so hopefully she wont be too fussed.......she wants a white lowerd sporty hilux......not bad i dont mind em myself so if she gets on then thats cool......each to their own:thumb

Try to find someone who does is my solution 馃槈

At least I don't have anyone to object....any folly is my own:tree:jesus

So how do you get onto Backyard Blitz????? Maybe it's a cheap opton for me.....Can I handle the national coverage of the event????!!!!

lil dub 路

my boy can't stand vws!!! he doesn't like cars much at all really....and takes great joy in giving me shit about my vw obsession....

but the t3 did get a compliment the other night - he was following in the Valiant ---a total freaking tank, and a rust bucket that is so huge he can hardly park it ---- and i left him for dead....the valiant struggles to do 60 on the highway!
and he did endure a half hour converstation soley on the topic of cars last week and he only pretended to vomit about twice.

he's getting a bit better tho - lately his attitude is that if he can be obsessed about music, i can be obsessed about cars....just doesnt quite add up when he has band practice weekly and i only go to club meetings once a month...

but i think it is a point of reference for him - he immediately associates cars with bevan boys i guess...so it was a bit of a shift for him to accept that i am kinda normal and i like cars

he point blank refuses to go to ANYTHING related to cars.
it was even my birthday for dubs at the pub...and he just said nope, tough luck, go alone!
so i did...
as long as he doesn't want me to stop doing stuff with cars...i don't mind that he isnt into them...i think i might get shitty though if he will never ever never go to a show with me. oh well. we will probably be through with each other before i have to drag him to a show!!!!!!

(lucky he isn't into cars and therefore wont ever read this post...eheheh...if you do dan, i'm sorry, but i do like the car and the dog more than you.....!)

kombi_kid 路

sheds are easy to build i would build one for you (many can attest at how shit builders we are as the sheds garage doors fell down in about 3 weeks!!! nothing a few bolts cant fix!!!)
anyway im over and out!!!
BTW easy fix for this : dump ya misses/bloke and enjoy the obsession dont let anyone stop what u love!!

We have to get our priorities right!!馃檪

If it's meant to be then it will work out OK, and each accepts the other for who they are and loves them for it (or despite it)!!:sandrine:kiss

Wah....I went to the Jamboree yesterday...had nearly missed it. Had had a session the night before...broke up with this person for the 4th time at least because of his paranoia...He was waiting for me to finish work today...wanted to go for coffee...First question was "Did you go to the Jamboree???!!!!! (well he didn't remember the name of the event, but that's what he meant:jesus)....I nearly didn't go but how could I miss it...got there just before the presentations, stayed for them and went home...that's all!!

I do have other interests and love getting out and doing other things, like everyone...but VW's are a love of mine so why do I have to change that...and I miss the forum if I don't get on to chat at least once a week without feeling bad about it!!

This is starting to sound like a topic for an Oprey show or something...(at least from me)

Who says we are obsessed??!!!!馃榾

lil dub 路

i think there are problems when your partner won't accept that you have an interest outside of their interests....
regardless of what it is....vws or whatever
they don't have to get into it as well, just as long as they are suportive
i hate seeing people (usually girlfriends) dragged around at shows....why bother going if you are not into it?
its actually HEALTHY to have interests outside of your relationship
its not so great if they are directly at odds with what you belive in (eg. fox hunting when dating a vegetarian, sex shows when dating a strict mulsim)
so don't drag your partner into things that they dont like i guess...i try not to bore my boy with car stuff, but if he asks me what i have been up to, i tell him the truth, but i wont ever drag him along to car shows and stuff because i will have a better time without him
and i refuse to go and watch really scary stuff with him or graphic things or computer games or whatever most of the boring stuff he does is....he has more fun without me
i guess that its good to have seperate interests is what i am trying to say.

though if i let my mother post on here she would take a whole different tangent...the whole garage thing as above....she got very tired of my dads vws littering the yard....
so they retired to acerage and now they just litter the paddocks!!!!

lil dub 路

by the way - i just noticed the topic
vws vs WIVES GFS PARTNERS ETC

i guess that reflects the fact that most of the vw enthusiasts are male, i wonder how many of their partners arent into vws?

do other females have problems with their partners not liking cars?
i mean, i guess it is fairly unusual for women to like cars, not unusual, but we are out-numbered.
so do the other women on the forum have supportive partners??
(or is the problem only with the lame-o's i go out with?) (and maybe jen too, you sound like a definate lame-o man chooser...no offence....i meant that in the most empowering nicest way possible) (and jay...well sheesh hun, you're trying to make the whole car vs boy thing easy by dating a certified vw-head)

i think most of the girls i know who are into cars go involved on their own, ie indepentantly of a partner.

but i do know that both my dad and my brother heavily infulenced me and my vw obsession (between us we own 6 at the moment)

and i think i am lucky that my brother drives a beetle, and my housemate is a pseudo car freak.

Robo 路

He He
My wife loves VW's as much as me, she is a forum member as well! so I can't even lie cheat and steal on here.
If my lady did not like VW's I would start an intensive indoctrination (brain washing) program. when she is asleep, get a tape recording and play it all night. I love VW's... I love all PPL who love VW's.... I will become a VW fanatic..... Make her watch all the DVD's of Herbie, over and over again! Make he Eat, sleep and dream VW's.
If this fails, do what the Russians did and send her to the Gulag's, and pick up a cute chicky at a VW show & swap!
Rob...馃槑

No contest, My wife loves VW's as much as me.

She was the one who got me into VW's.

BiX 路

Mines now my ex(she hated the beetle, said they were hard to drive!!). She did use to race hillclimbs and be into cars, just not VW's, so it wasn't all bad.

LittleMissHerbina 路

ok, i can relate to the girls with this one!!!!

Well, my ex didn't like vw's. He had a problem with the fact that if we went out with his friends and started talking cars, that i knew more about cars in general than he did.
If ever he wanted to upset me or hurt my feeling he would attack my car and my love of vw's.

so i got out of it all. Now a single woman lovinf the vw scene on my own!!!

EgeWorks 路

My Ex thought it was too feminine for a guy to drive a Beetle - that and she hated the lack of a decent heater馃檨 I think people who have serious hang-ups about cars (maybe Magnas excluded) need to stop and relax a bit...

I spose i'm lucky in the fact that i've managed to turn my boyfriend into o total vw lover(without even trying!!!)I've owned kombis for the past 10yrs or so & when i met my man he was interested in cars but didn't own one as he'd not long finished uni & funds were tight.I took my kombi in to get serviced at my mechanics one time & saw this awesome fastback convertible that i just fell in love with.I went back over & over to drool & finally said to my man "what about if we pay half coz i don't have enough cash at the moment & you can drive her till i raise the funds & pay out your half"He agreed & i think was pretty much hooked instantly!!He ended up buying my half out(heh, i still get to drive her!!)& now 5yrs & 2 more veedubs each later, its all cool!!!We can happily chat veedubs & attend shows together & i even let him polish his BITS on the couch!!!!!!!!!!!!!:kiss

Cam 路

Dunno, never an issue really. My GF appreciates good looking cars, doesn't like beetles though. However I know if it came to the crunch she would come first before any of my hobbies.

KruizinKombi 路

My g/f has always had partners that have been into speedway cars, V8's and 4x4's, and she is into ricers and V8's, but surprisingly she doesn't seem to mind the kombi at all, and even likes it!! She loves my new rear wheels and wants me to hurry up and get the front ones!!! 馃榾馃榾馃榾

My ex wasn't really into VWs but tolerated my obsession quite well. She sucumbed to driving type 3's because they were cheap and I wasn't prepared to work on any other make. She's still driving the Beetle we bought when we were together, and loves it.

byronbus 路

I like my VW's, I like collecting parts and models, have way too many of each, I have too many VW's to drive or places to park them. I also have a vespa and would like a few more vintage ones. I also surf everyday, 5.30am. I collect old longboards and retro shortboards. Hobbies and obsessions are a part of life, better they be fun ones than things like work or golf. However all said and done, its relationships that make us truly happy, be it family or friends. Lets not kid ourselves, VW's are just cars. Go and tell someone that you love them today, even if its only ya mum!!!

spritle 路

hang on a sec

are they opposed? or can the vw and significant other live in harmony?

by the sound of things, it sounds like they can live in harmony up to a point.

what happens when it goes over that point?

or ronster, buy her a golf :P

and woohooo... my bro's looking to buy a kombi and come back to the 'dub family 馃榾

Lokita 路

You must fight and fight and fight until they like them dammit! 馃檪

Ok, ok, I guess we have to accept that some people maybe possibly somehow aren't into dubs and if you aren't just interested but obsessed, it can make it very hard for your partners. If you accept each other's different interests though, it can work. Showing interest in your partner's hobbies is usually a good way for them to accept yours.

My bf wasn't interested in dubs till we spent every weekend working on my old baby just to make the thing run. He learnt to love them pretty quickly! Now I have to drive him to work everyday cos he wants to go in Herbie. His Celica isn't good enough anymore! 馃榾

:sandrine
I got my drivers licence late in life & always loved & wanted a bug.
A few yrs ago I finally got my licence & I bought one & started slowly doing things to it to give it that extra sparkle because she didn't look real good when I bought her.
So over time I have done many things to her & now she is
starting to look pretty good.
My very supportive husband & I started with no knowlege on her or any VW for that matter, but over time we learn't many things on the way with it.
Over time that bug has started a BIG obsession with VW.
I now run a branch of Klub VW here in Byron Bay, have met so many (& still meeting) some very beautiful people out there as well as here on the forum.
My hubby has watched my obsession become larger & larger
over time & supports my interest.
Now we have bought a 58 Microbus & I think he has gotten just as excited as me with the thought of a great resto approaching.
I married a good one who never gets jealous with me chatting VW to other guys, going to events alone, hanging out with guys, puts up with many ph calls etc. (thats why I maried him )
At the time when we met no cars were involved then....
he owned a Ducati & raced it & I went along to watch & support him......funny how life goes....
Funny how they say "find someoone with the same interests as you"....our passion together at the time was owning & restoreing a old Home (queenslander)
That passion has finished....been there & done that...now its VW...
Our home now has 3 VW's ...my 61 Bug, 58 Microbus, a 2002
VW (commercial) Transporter we use for our business.
(and the sons 2 Mazda's... 1 RX7 & 1 STB 1300)
So our interests have both changed along the way but still the same as well.
I have been lucky enough to find a great man who supports
my many interests & puts up with my love of VW's.
I consider myself very lucky....

i am hearing so many beautiful stories and tales.
there really are some beautiful people out there.
Only hope i find one of them!!!

buzzbug 路

i was a holden man when my wife and i met.
She was 17 and her dad just bought her the car that she always wanted, a little bug.
Her choice of car didn't phase me as it only took her to work and tafe, the rest of the time was in my Kinga.
over the years that we have been together i have managed to snag the bug off of her.
Albeit that i had to spend $16000 on a new car for her in order to get her to hand over the keys.
But it was well worth it.

aggri1 路

Hmm, funny how some people seem to persuade themselves into becoming dub-heads, while others couldn't be tortured into doing so.

My sister grew up in Europe, I lived here, so when she came over we decided to travel a bit. So we needed a car. Although I didn't know anything about Kombis (uh, they're Volkswagens right?) she said that's what we should get (just 'cause they're cool, and she didn't like "bogan-wagons" = commodores), instead of a stationwagon commodore (Looking back now, I shudder when I realise how close I was to getting one of those things!)

We got a baywindow, and had a very educational experience driving it, occassionally on two cylinders, around VIC, SA, & NSW this Summer. I love my bus. Now my housemates tease me about my obsession. I bought a little splitty model at the Jamboree the other day. My sister still just thinks kombis are cool. She's into Datsuns (strange huh).

I became a dubber of my own free will.

As long as partners are not ones that can't handle time apart, I see no problem in having (some) different interests - I agree that it's even a good thing. Then again, finding a nice girl in a dub, wow, that'd be cool now wouldn't it, and philosophising be damned!

Cheers volks,
Aurel.

PS: how grouss was the jamboree on Sunday!

The girls are shocked that I love my car like an addiction.
Then they realized its a big part of my life...car, internet, Klub VW, days off to go to vw events. etc.
I am seeming to break their mould of the "car beven" lol.

This is another reason why I started a All Girl Dub Day for all the girls to share their love of VW's together.
Not just sit on the passengers seat of their boyfriend's car at vw shows & not talk to no one...... get out there & get a VW
