does the thrust race supposed to have a plastic facing on it as mine only has bits of it left

some do some dont depends what clutch plate its pressing against.
If you have a ring type pressure plate then the plastic teflon coating works as a some absorber. Stops the metal 2 metal friction and therefore creating noise.
