reversed intake and top radiator hose manifold
you have to cut the end off the water manifold to
reverse it as it hits the block where the
starter motor used to live
hotdog008 ·
when you reverse the intake you have to move the alt.
i just used the standard bracket and hang the alt. of the
other side (reversed it as well)
than made a simple adjusting bracket
hotdog008 ·
i think i will use the dash that came with the 1/2 cut

with the cover on i should still be able to carry my esky and swag for the manx club trips
hotdog008 ·
this has been a great help
i put the body on and off 100 times a day to measure things

to help in ground clearing i made these
i needed to move the turbo anyway
there are more photos in the custom exhuast section of this

can`t wait to here what it sounds like
this cost $20 for exhuast pipe bend 2 and 1/2inch plus 1/2cut bits(cat converter witch has temp sender in it)

i just need an intercooler in between the turbo outlet
and the intake manifold
hotdog008 ·
you can sort of see how it is coming together
just put the body in between the rollbar and the pan

Mate thats great. excellent pics of your work.
Andy42 ·
yep that is very cool. Will be good to see it going. At least it gives me a bit of inspiration to get back to working on mine :thumb
seagull ·
this looks great , can you please show us the rear shocky towers how you did that .
and what is the fan set up looks like a holden radiator ? in there
are you going to fit a skid plate at the front ?
seagull
wibble ·
Very inspiring indeed! have to pull my finger out too, just waiting for my new rear end to get here (from beenliegh) and things should speed up again. Again hotdog, you do nice work man!!!
seagull ·
how big is the fuel tank ?
and how did you do the oil pan ??
and how are you going to keep the front wheels on the ground !
o man wish you were in Perth !

Hmmm do not know what you meen coming from beenleigh:P:P:P we thought we would use it all in the thrash buggy that is being built:thumb:thumb
Oh and that is still not enough pics yet of the manx😀:thumb😀
seagull ·
hey any how about showing us your , I like to see the lift kit please seagull
hotdog008 ·
Original radiator with original twin ECU controlled fans on the back sucking air through the radiator blowing air over gbox.
No front skid plate.
Stock fuel tank with extra fittings welded in - 1/2 inch outlet; 1/2 inch breather; 10mm return.
Cut the oil pan and welded a tank on the back of it (towards the front of motor, back of buggy) so it has the same capacity.
The lift kit is just a bit of 40mm box with bent up 1.6mm over the tunnel. To bend it around the corners I just sliced through 3 sides with the cut off saw (every inch for about 12 inches) - bent it to shape and welded it up. I also welded in threads to bolt the body to.
This is the second 40mm box as I originally just boxed in the sides but then decided on the lift kit. The two 40mm boxes are welded on top of each other.
hotdog008 ·
Ran the 1/2 cut at home before I pulled the motor. Sounded great with the same length exhaust that I have, but I have now gone from 2 1/4inch to 2 1/2inch.
Will take pics of shock towers for seagull.
Brad ·
mmm thanks for the pics.. Looks cool and means I had better get back to teh shed so I can keep up with you ...
I have some concerns about your radiator though and think you will have issues with it staying cool. What happens when you have a roof on ?
I also think you are going to have cavitation issues with your fans blowing into the upforce of air from the road / pan. You will notice that you are 100% opposite to the way we went with Wes's radiator. It runs cool and doesn't use the thermos that much which supports the idea that there is a lot of air pushing up from the road. Just a thought..
Also keen to see your sump and we are about to cut up some EJ ones in pursuit if 75mm to get it back to where we want it.
So when do you think it will be on the road and what transmission are you using ?
Maybe we will have to come for a drive and steel some ideas :> 😎😎
Craig Torrens ·
looks excellent 😉
what rear trailing arms are you using?
MickH ·
Good stuff!!! Looks the goods and should go like a shower of &hit!!! Where did you run the fuel and brake lines? Are they in the tunnel? Better start mine soon I suppose!!!!:jesus
Baja Wes ·
I like the mags, they're nice.
Good work.
As Brad said, the radiator ain't gunna work with a roof on. I guess you aren't planning on running one.
Behind the front seats will be a low pressure at most speeds, and will work against the thermos. It may run a little hot on the highway. I guess only time will tell.
If it does run hot, I would try cutting holes through the side of the body, and adding air scoops in front of the rear wheels. These could feed air to the radiator and might work well.
The other disadvantage is that blowing hot air over the box will make the gearbox and CV's run hotter. Whether it causes any problems or not is another matter.
Looks like your near the testing stage anyway, good luck with everything :thumb
Brad - cavitation only occurs in liquids, but that's another story.
hotdog008 ·
brad
looked at lots of radiators (mainly racecar set ups in books)
have also played around with rear mounted radiators in
speedway cars
wes is an engineer i am a tradesman we will always have differant ideas(ask any tradesman)
you won`t have any touble with the oil pan
i`m using a 6 rib with an early kombi bellhousing
and a 200mm clutch(so it suiys my adaptor witch bill croft made and i`m very happy with)
please come for a drive and visit
we have some good 4wd/buggy places to go
criag
longer wider strengthenedarms to suit type 2 axles

fuel lines run through the tunnel
brake lines ran as normal

Ok...thanx for that. I'll leave you alone to finish the job at hand!!!

Where did you get the seats? Did you import them yourself? or do you have a source?
What bolt pattern are you wheels? What car are the mags off?
Thanks

yeah I suppose 🙂
but I don't you need to be an engineer to make the observations that I, or Brad have made.
I got nothing against rear mounted radiators, mine is a rear mounted radiator. Mine also isn't the perfect set-up and needs a couple of small deflectors for continuous high-speed use. I found out by trial and error, but with a lot of careful intial thought my set-up is pretty good as is so far.
I'm not knocking your idea's, I'm just adding "have you thought about" comments.
Brad ·
I am confussed what does being a tradesman do to air flow ? It is the same for engineers and tradesman alike.
I hope it works but I can't see how.
Dunno what race cars you have looked at but I have never seen an offroader with a rad mounted in that way. My issue is with the air flow not the rad itself. Your fans are sucking ?? yes ??? if so they are pulling air from inside the car .. yes ? So if the rad gets a hole in it the steam goes into the passenger area ???
I just can't see the thermo's pulling enough air to compensate for the amount of air pushing up from under the pan.
Better gat back to the shed now as I don't even have a rad in mine yet :<
Baja Wes ·
On my car, at speeds of up to 110kph the air happily flows under the car and then curves up to the radiator, then gets sucked out the rear of the car.
At speed of 110kph and higher, the air flows under the car but is going too fast to curve up to the radiator. This creates a low pressure pocket in front of the radiator, which reduces the air flow and makes the engine run a little hotter at these speed. I am planning on fixing it with a couple of little kicker scoops below the torsion tubes to kick the high speed air up towards the radiator.
My concern is the position of your radiator is such that it's always in a low pressure pocket of behind the windscreen and seats / in the cabin. It might cause problems.
We're not picking on you, and we appreciate you posting pics of your ride. I don't want anyone else to feel discouraged about posting pics of their work because they might feel they will get whinged at for their ideas. This is not how we're trying to come across. We're just adding constructive critisism that might help prevent or diagnose potential problems 🙂

i got the beard super seats from an offroad guy who imported them
he than got sponsorship from another brand
wheels are 6 stud landcruiser
CSA mags 16x8 back and 16x7 front
brad ,wes
looks like if i go fishing you`s two will come in hook line and sinker
don`t worry like you`s two i`m not easily discouraged
thanks for your remarks

i walk away shaking my head ...you guys put my puny efforts to shame .i can only watch and learn . keep up the excellent information . great work realy cool

fishing ... mmm you had better take an esky cause it will be thirsty work waiting for ya engine to cool down on the side of the road :beer

mm that is very interesting... looks good.
Is your engineer happy with all the mods ? I am still talking to a few about mine :cry
seagull ·
hey hot dog , I thinking here you have bolted the shock tower on the torsion arm ? as the steel these are made from doesent take to welding very well .Is there a bolt out of veiw behind the orignal shock mount ( were the two pipes are attached )? If so might be good to piont this out to some of the none Trade guys !
Did you make a header tank at the back of the motor ,so the donk does not get a air lock ??

I appears to me the old shock mount has been cut off. The new shock mount is bolted to the body mounting holes.

You can weld quite happily to shock towers and torsion housings on the VW. It is a myth. I have welded heaps of stuff to them with just a mig and before that an arc. You don't need anything fancy.
Proof is in the pudding..........
Baja Wes ·
They are welded to the torsion tubes from the factory...

Hey Mattie, you organize a weekend trip up their and we will be up there,or at least iwill be as some of the girls/skirts down here dont like driving their buggies long distance(no offence Heather) so come on Matt lets see a trip in C/Qland
seagull ·
Wes I did some test peices and had them tested ( mate is in this line of work ), this was on the center section of type three torsion bar I had floating around .The mig would not take to it , the stick welder did ,but failed when we stretched it , the weld came away from the torsion bar in one peice . I did not get the metal graded as that cost $ . looking at the welds there is slag coating on some of the beams I have seen so at a gess I would say they weld them sub arc ??
seagull:beer
Baja Wes ·
sub arc welding may be tricky. With most castings the preheat temperature is the most critical.
As Brad said the proof is in the pudding. He has welded lots of things to VW shock towers, abuses his buggies and hasn't broken anything (anything he welded to the shock tower anyway).
Brad ·
You can happily weld the stuff... I dunno what you did seagull but I have had no problems.
I use low spped high amps on my mig and get plenty of penetration on it and you can see it take from the inside of the beam.
I have just finished making a proto type rear end adjuster which welds to the spline section. I have put 40 T on it and get no distortion or breakage. I am sending one for further testing at a mates shop. He will xray it and let me know what it looks like.
Have also just fitted one into a buggy so we will see if they hold.

:o u guys wear skirts??? hmm in buggies??? ooohwaaahhh aren't you afraid of flashing?? (must be a secret campfire thing...😉 )
Nice to see open minded fellas in touch with thier fem sides :P
I'd drive to c/qld! I have a policy of 'will drive anywhere as long as I have enough in bank 4 tow,,, or somewhere safe to park car along way till i can fix it!!!!'
orrrr.. just take it to nearest truck stop, stick fur on it, find cattle train heading back to bris, and run up to driver..." scuse me moite, I fink one of ya beasts has escaped... here I'll help ya load it ...... pull on rope attached to bullbar whilst you get a friend to drive it up ramp yelling moooo-moooo as you go!... see where there's a will theres a way!
(I just have to obay speed limits as it's all my engine can handle! 😀 )
return to welding stories... sorry... mmm yess weldindg indeed!!:thumb
seagull ·
brad My welding is no problem 1 tack 1 tone !!! no the weld faild on the cast center section ( type three ) where the 4 bolt are to bolt the gear box mount .
I dont know what the go was I had sent my 4 samples on that day this was the only one that failed ??? . I have had full Austrailian & NZ code 1554 from about 1990 .
It gets me. we need a enginer to pass our buggys ,trikes and hot rods ,provide welding xrays ,macro examinations ect ect .$$$$$
Then you can buy a welder from Kmart build a trailer from a plan included take in down and get it lic .????
:jesus
Brad ·
you use a plan to build trailers over there ??? Wow .. we just make it up over here 😎
Yeah I dunno, all I can say is that I have never had anything break away from the torsion housing on a VW and I weld stuff to it all the time.
The engineers I use have no problem approving it and have never even mentioned having issues.
