loud music at shows

ph billet ·

One thing was a bummer at the nats the loud and bad music and dvd sound tracks blairing from cars it was past a joke dont get me wrong I love my 60s and 70s classic pumped up but the nats is not the place it was just a mass of noise just some kind of contest to have the most decibels it made it hard to talk to people about the cars, maybe I am showing my age but it was just unpleasent ..... does any one agree or should I pull my head in .

pod ·

yeah ,it was a bit hard to hear announcements etc, must be getting old too!!!!!!:P

VDUBXTC ·

I don't mind a show of power every now and then, but not having them run constantly over the whole day

Oasis ·

I was parked next to the black Golf with the HUGE sound system. He was asked a couple of times to cool it. Nice guy though, just maybe should have been somewhere else.

nuffy ·

maybe at the next nats a sound competition could be held nearby the show and shine and they can get it all out of their system and away from the main area.

amazer ·

I dont like it, as the famous lady from ipswich said.
I dont like it when some people think they need to start the cars and let em sing at the redline either. It takes some enjoyment away from others so it shouldnt be allowed.

Stanley ·

I tend to agree.

what they need to do is have a sound off at a certain time of day
like they have at the Jamboree. Seems to work a treat.

Doug Sweetman ·

Fine, use it, but just be considerate about it. I think thats what people are trying to say.

billycart wrote:huge!!!!

it was sony dude wasnt that loud!

what ever car i have it gunna have a system in it, and if im at a show it will get used!

[Edited on 15-4-2004 by billycart]
So what you are saying is that you will do whatever you want even if it annoys other people? Well hopefully someone with a bigger stereo than yours will be parked next to you playing all of Wing's greatest hits.

nbturbo ·

I don't know if you are getting too old or just becoming wise. At our show in Adelaide each year they hire a band to play during the day and place the band next to the area set aside for eating and talking.I only get to see these VW people and their cars once a year and get pissed off trying to talk over the top of some crap music that's got no relevance to the day.

Anthiron ·

billycart i dont agree......im young and im into car stereos and alot of doof doof but if im at a show.....(unless its an audio sound off) then im there for the cars......i dont need to show off how loud i can get my speakers before they explode....thats not what its all about.....people want to talk to the owners of cars and be able to hear their replys without having to yell........i say TURN IT DOWN....the only reason u guys all do it anyway is because u think u are impressing someone otherwise u wouldnt bother.......sure have an awesome stereo but use it when its appropriate.....like in designated areas or times...not when the 2 guys next to you are trying to have a quiet conversation about ride height

BiX ·

What he said (anthiron)

Robo ·

Well I hate it, I think there should be a DJ running the one sound system.
I was at one show last year and some clown had his system pumping out a song with bad swear words blaring out for all to hear, I can't believe the selfishness, and lack of thought from some PPL. I realise that some PPL dont have the same tastes as me (some may say thank god) so I refrain from imposing my particular songs on the ears of others.
I take my children to these shows,as do a lot of other familiy's and I dont think it is very appropriate, or in the spirit of the event, to behave like this. Like what has been said before, its a car show, not a radio volume contest.
Rob...😎

baybuscamperkid ·

maybe there should be an area for it? or broadcast some cool music and the announcements onto a radio frequency and allow all cars to urn the radios up as loud as they want, as long as it is tuned to the show's station. that way the music is controlled and the messages get across to everywhere.

Anthiron ·

thats a good idea about the announcements over a radio frequency baybuscamperkid but it dosnt solve the problem of not being able to hold conversations.....good idea though:party

lulu94 ·

ok i dont want to offend any one here but here is my say

i think that if people are going to spend the money to make a good sound system part of the car, then it is part of there car and should be showed off a bit.
plus i think that the music played can show the theme and personality of the car and owner which helps to show off the car.

I wasnt at the nats but i have been to a few car shows with ryan and its at all shows as far as i can tell.

i understand that children and families go to these events and some music is very distasteful, but chosen correctly and loud but not to loud adds to the whole affect of the car.

Just my opinion, as i said not ment to offend anyone so no one please take any offence.

Danielle

buzzbug ·

Well said lulu94,
yes well chosen music can help show the car off.
But it is like anything in life, moderation and consideration is the key.

hey billycart, i am sure that wayne wouldn't be impressed if you had loud music blaring out of you car next to his cab when he is talking to admireres about it.

Baja Wes ·

I got a pretty good system in my car, nothing over the top, but not too shabby either. I don't usually turn it on at car shows, and if I do it's not very loud or not for very long. A car show is a car show, not a sound off.

I laugh at the wankers with more kW in their stereos than in their engines, sitting there with techno blarring thinking they're cool. :puke

Anthiron ·

right on wes!

62deluxe ·

Amen to that. Do they realise how stupid they look?
:cussing
Cars not noise.

bigbruvabob ·

Well music is cool but it is primarily used to create atmisphere and therefore should always be undertaken with due respect to the situation and programmed to add to the atmosphere of the event, i think dj's for shows are a great idea but only because im a dj who does vw shows and my sound system is huge but as a dj asked to provide tunes for an event (read VW Jamboree Vic ) my crew and I endeavour to provide cool music for the whole family at a level that doesn't detract from the vibe of the thing man. Consideration for all your fellow man is the way to go but as always this is a balance thing and not always centimetre perfect. All things said i hope to have my complete dj rig out of the beetle and into a bus in the near future and look forward to inflicting ma taste on ya all at a venue near you soon.
YWOODNYA from Ywoodnya sound systems.:beer

kombi_kid ·

use can all get stuffed i do what i want when i want:P:P:P:P:P u will hear my kombi next year whether ya like it or not and not playing ur crappy 70's hits😘kiss😘kiss:kiss
keep it real
rhys

slamed_vw ·

hey peoples i understand that the music can get a bit loud and anoying, but as a young bloke myself i understand how hard it is the gain respect for what you have in your beetle as we are not alowed to enter our cars in the auto salon and alot of other motor shows due to a rule called the 87 rule which alows 87 and newer cars to be entered into the show. so the only other alternative if the vw nationals the only other place where people respect your car no matter what( if they r true vw fans). now im 16 im doing up a 68 beetle i dont see there should be a problem with it.its only one day a year. Its a good thing that us young blokes are taking an interest into the vw scene or else it would die right out so maybe the older generation vee dubers can take that into concideration and like one of the other blokes said dedicate a certain section for the loud sterios or evan make a show for the young blokes. anyways let the air cooled spirit live on forever.

slamed_vw ·

hey kombi kid would u be into a cruse or something for all us your peoples with the hot vws and the loud sterios. cause it would be good if some cars gt together and had an event for like the younger generation

kombi_kid ·

when i get my licence back :cussing:cussing:cussing:cussing its a very llllooooooonnnnngggggggg story

Robo ·

I think thats a great Idea. Is there was an event for PPL with hi tech audio equipment in their cars?, may be the VW fraternity could organise something for a Volkswagen only show?
Rob...
😎

Baja Wes ·

Well I'm not exactly old, and don't want to hear 70's crap (well some 70's is cool), but I hate half the techno crap people play to show off their stereo's.

Playing it quitely most of the show and cranking it up when someone asks you to or when your trying to show someone how it sounds is fine. I do that occasionally.

It's the people who sit in fold out chairs beside their car and crank their music continuously all day that I don't like and find funny. Trust me, they look like wankers.

The gold coast show had trophies for stereos. I got 2nd place and I didn't even turn my stereo on. I'm assuming the judges did when they looked at my car. I didn't need to crank it hard all day to impress anyone. And some of the people that did crank it all day obviously didn't impress the judges.

i am in putting a very loud sound system in my fastie when it's finished and if i'm at a show and someone wants to hear what it can do then i'll show them...but i have to say to have it going all day is just boring and annoying. doing a sound display every now and then is one thing, annoying the crap out of everyone is another.
plus who wants to stand and admire a car when you can't hear yourself think standing next to it.
i agree with amazer...everyone has to be considered, not just yourself

68AutoBug ·

I agree with all those who want to turn the stereos off, and talk to other VW People that You see once a year..
It wasn't as bad as the LOUD LIVE BAND that played at the nationals last year [maybe year before?] It Was LOUD ..
So, I congratulate whoever decided NOT to have a live band this year.. and You won't catch Me, with My stereo on, and the Engine running so the Alternator can catch up.... to the battery.. and I Like to have Shania Twain singing out LOUD so everyone can HEAR HER...🙂🙂
Much Better than Thump Thump!!
What if I replace ALL CDs in Music playing VWs with a Shania Twain CD?? Now that would be nice... 🙂🙂 so long as We can still talk without shouting and going hoarse...

Lee

68AutoBug ·

and it is a good idea to have all the Radios on the One FM frequency and help the Public Address sound system..
and they don't have to be turned up that loud.....

Anyone have a Decibel meter???
Anyone who's car stereo goes over 70db will have it turned OFF... Simple...

Lee

buzzbug ·

who ever it was that had the herbie replica, i love the music that they had running all day.
You had to stick you head in the car to hear it as it was playing rather low, but the music was from the herbie movies, ie: the music they played during the race.
It made me laugh and thought that it was a great touch.
Lee, the Shania Twain......umm........lets just remember moderation hahahahah
lee.

Paul Aslanides ·

Hi. Some years ago, the VW club had a day at Waverley Park, Melbourne.
It was a great day - plenty of VW's and no music.
Another year, another day, at Albert Park Lake - missed that one.
But the last one I tried to attend was at Monash University, Wellington Rd. Parked the Kombi and made my way through the carpark, looking at vehicles and talking to other VW owners along the way. And all the time the # music was blaring, and the # bass was a'thumpin, LOUDLY. So I figured I don't have to suffer this ##, and went home. Never again. One would think that an annual show day would be the ideal time to woo and sign up new members, not to put people off.

type3kid ·

lee, you can't put a complete ban on music. yeah i agree that there are people who go way too far with music, but sayiong no music disadvantages tghose who aren't doing anything wrong. some people have got a nice car but pride it on the stereo as that ios what they like, and they should be allowed to show it off. i am NOT saying that they should be allowed to blast it all day as that would annoy me, and i am interested in the stereos, but they should be allowed to show it off. maybe someone needs to allocate a time where no announcements are made and people who like the whole music thing can show what their sound system can do. people have suggested a side area, maybe that's an idea too that should be considered.

i hope i haven't offended you lee and if i have, i do sincerely apologise. that's just my point of view. i do respect what you are saying however

amazer ·

i've got no problem with music playing. I wouldnt go so far a scalling it a wank either cos I know there are plenty of people about who think spending shitloads of money on a VW engine is a wank. So long as you cant hear it (let alone feel it) when you're away from that car, and its not offensive language then who cares. Play as much nana maskouri, denis roussos, or rap crap as you like, just let it be possible for me to get away from it. I dont think its an age issue either, its just a common decency thing. Westfield here plays loud Bing Crosby music to keep loitering teens away. If it isnt your style of music/volume then its bloody annoying. To say that others are old, they can get stuffed is just wrong. And I'm sure that when I was a teenager, old was definitely older than 33.

1 foot in the grave.

Dannyboy ·

You young folk and your duff , duff music. Shouldn't be allowed!
Happens again i'll call the law!

Dan🙂

slamed_vw ·

peoples peoples calling the law on young blokes with sterios banning people from shows with sterios louder than 70 dbs is just fucken slack dose that guy that said that know how loud 70 db is..... its talkin volume.

slamed_vw ·

yea kombi kid and robo would yous guys be interested in an event for the younger vee dubers with no old farts ruining the party???????????????????????????????????

Anthiron ·

i think that was the point slamed_vw

ducky ·

sorry I couldn't here you, i just turned down my stereo

Anthiron ·

im only 17 guys and i have true apprication of a decent stezza and will have one in my new baja😎 ..but i dont need to measure up with u other guys who do it to be cool in front of everyone....ive got no hard feelings agaisnt loud stereos but when its a show like the nats or whatever keep it down, its about the cars.

modulus ·

I had front seat in a Toyota Echo competition SPL car the other day. My, oh my; 155 dB (not with anyone in it of course!). With the stereo cranking and the doors closed, with each bass beat the three 15" subs in the back together with the amps (where the passengers might otherwise be) caused the air to woosh back and forth. At more moderate settings, the sound was excellent, with a very 'live' sort of presence to the music.

Outside the car, with the stereo cranked, various minor peripheral items such as number plates and wheels were shaking loose, and the windscreen and surrounds flexing alarmingly. Impressive, to say the least.

I know this in no way advances (nor retards) the arguments about loud music at shows, but relevance is not one of my high points today.

bigbruvabob ·

ok me and my partner are into vw,s and dance patries i have a big sound system that i am happy to cart to any vw show, and play at any level you like my new retso will be ready soon and this will have deks and mixer in the front just pop the lid and play with 12 in mids tops and lows loaded onto the roofracs. we have always thought that a night party at a cool outdoor location for all those young and young heart dubberrs would be grouse, in winter maybe we can find a big warehouse were we can drive in set up and doof all night. Me and my mates will happily provide the tunes in all styles all night. As an old skool raver i cant think of any better decor for my all night partying than a wharehouse full of groovers and the grooviest cars of all, ywoodnya
david and andrea ywoodnya sound systems.:bounce

vwombat ·

Wow! You gals/guys are real sensitive about this one!
Just a few points:

Any "Dick measuring contest" is a contest essentially, for "Dick's"!

A narrowcast broadcasting licence for an event is really not too difficult to organise if I remember correctly. Ask at www.cbaa.org.au. I've done lots of radio stuff before, but I cant commit to taking this on at future event's because of my young family. I know a couple of profi's who could organise it properly tho'. If anyone important in the VW heirarchy wants their numbers, U2U me.

If everyone tuned to a frequency tailor made for the event, then you wouldn't have the "ego trippin' soundmess" that usually occurs when "boys" feel the need to express who they are and how f*$kin' cool they think they are. You can also use everyone's sound system for announcements between songs. Continuity is a GOOD thing.

When it comes to different tastes, keep the program pretty vintage and Family friendly for the day, and churn it up towards the evening for a real young-un's party. Sound limits in the daytime are cool, and the boys can pull out their members in the dark for fun if they like.

That way all should be catered for. Does that sound like a plan?

Flying VW ·

Well my Stereo was on at the Nats, and I seen alot of people getting Jiggy when they were looking at my Car.

But I must say there was ONE car there I found anoying.

Flying VW ·

Why don't we Outlaw Musical Horn's at Car Shows.

Who invited the Duke Boys to the Nat's. 🙂 hahaha 😎

slamed_vw ·

hey modulus u had three 15s in the echo and pulled 155 db right? how much power were u running cause my mate had 1 us audio 15 in his accent and pulled a 150 flat with 1000 watts witch was pretty cool. i have found that the shape of the beetle is awsom for sound i pulled 130db playin eminem with the doors open in my beetle so soon when i get my other beetle im installin 2 clarion 15s i hope to pull 150. this has no relivence hehe but i thought it might be good to add ohh and by the way its gettin played at the nats when i get it 🙂

aircooled70 ·

for all the purists out there, soon I will have finished me 59 bus, subs amps and neons to boot with plents of bass. Not bad for an old guy that loves rap and hip hop. Do you realise what work goes into sound systems so let them show them off, I for one love it

I didn't look at the amp specs; there were three of them and a single 2 farad capacitor feeding the three subs (plus a few 8" mids and such in the back, splits in the front and I think there were a couple more underseat amps for the front speakers). As this was a competition SPL car, there were a *lot* of watts; I'm reluctant to quote numbers because all the manufacturers quote their wattages using different loads and different total harmonic distortion.

Bear in mind, though, that the Decibel scale is logarithmic, so 150 dB is *very* loud compared with 130 dB, you'll need a bunch of amps to get there.

The Echo was a fun little toy but with all the kit in the back and reworked dash, doors etc.:
- you look like a dizwatz driving it
- you can't park it 'cos it'll get stolen and stripped
- only one of yr mates can fit, he'll have to be a dizwatz too
- even though this was a SPL competition car, not a sound quality competitor, I reckon the cost of the sound gear and installation must be pushing close to the original car value
- at the end of the day, it might be a 155 dB Echo, but it's still an Echo.
