This is my new ride it’s a 78 Kombi with a 4.4L V8. It looks a little rough now but as soon as I get it will remove
the wheels 15” merc wheels. Do some body work lower it as it is raised at the moment and give it a quick coat of matt black I'm also thinking of
putting silver racing stripes on it till it gets it propper paint scheme.
wacked1
follow this link and download a little mpeg and hear what it sounds like!!
very cool. how low will you be able to go thoug, with the engine sticking out the bottom?
wacked1 ·
Actually, this conversion doesn’t hang down as much as my last V6 or any scoobys I've seen. I'm loosing the rear tow bar and redesigning the exhaust before it gets there, twin 4 inch outlets about 60cm apart.
kroozzn63 ·
your a step ahead of me ive removed my bull bars havent painted yet
soon to be dropped 5 inches from standard height
Hey how much did it cost you for the merc rims and to fit stud pattern?
wacked1 ·
56ovaltine the rim go straight on actually the rims are for sale (the ones in the fourth pic) i'm after about $350 they have excellent tyers and the fronts are orig white walls and the back have newish firestones on them (no retreads) they are in the western suburbs of Sydney not too far for you to come!
pyr0 ·
wacked i remeber your car from the nats 😀 me and like 4 mates went out and had a squiz at it 😎 very tuff looking bus man should look the part once she gets slammed :bounce
wacked1 ·
thanks mate. BTW it was good catching up with you guys, the wheels make it look a lot better, spesh when she gets slammed.
thanks
Doug Sweetman ·
excellent !!!!
Cant wait to see your dyno results ! - I always got the feeling that there is a heap more power hidden in that motor - hopefully you can unleash some of it......
Rims are sweet !
Will sound the goods with the exhaust you are describing too !!!!
When finished, make sure you get some video footage up on the web somewhere please !
wacked1 ·
Yes Doug there is a lot of potential especially seeing the distributor is shot and the exhaust is killing it and the inlet manifold and carbie are a little small. Will get some video of it soon, maybe on the dyno or in a back street.
Doug Sweetman ·
Cant wait.
Still kicking myself that I had to sell that bus........ Still you sound like you deserve and appreciate it !!
Cruzin in a Golf ·
thats an extremely quick paint job, how long did it take you?
wacked1 ·
about 10 mins and $20.
sgetty ·
hows she go on juice dude??:beer
Doug Sweetman ·
hopefully better than when I owned it !!!!
It used to get about 200kms from 40L.........
VWFOOL ·
looking good man, was nice to meet u and ovaltine at the nats

bloody hell!!
wacked1 ·
VWFOOL Ditto, I don't worry about the fuel costs, the pleasure it get driving it over shadows that.
Kruizin_76 ·
great bus mate..............
i suppose that goes without saying 😎
RISKY^VW ·
man i love that kombi 🙂
and love the paint matt black and white looks cool
and with the v8 just sweet 😀
great stuff !
wacked1 ·
I got these for the bus today I have been toying with the idea of turbos or supercharger, turbos won. The set up is a twin turbo off a supra, but I won’t "just" be running these. Will let you know a little more later, gotta go.
Wacked1
pete wood ·
love the bus and the turboes. hope your tranny is feeling reeeeeeeeeeel strong!
Other wise it'll be doing lots 'o' this.....
:puke
I dare you to supercharge it as well. :thumb
wacked1 ·
Well here is the go this is the dummy set up to see if it all fits and it does. I’m going quad turbo’s they’re rated at about 300 kw, the box will getting a major overhaul too. What do you think?

and the other side
Doug Sweetman ·
quad turbos are great for the wank / show factor, but you would find two decent sized ones easier to set up, plumb, and produce better power and torque.
Having said that, go for it - I'd love to see it done !
wacked1 ·
Flatline perf. in sydney seem to think it's easy to set up. the only reason going the 4 rout is cost, 2 larger ones could set you back as much as $1800 a piece so far the cost has been only a couple hundred $.they also reckon it's easier than a single and the same set up as twin. this set fell into my lap.
anyhoo see how it runs but they wont be on this motor going on later model rover EFI, pissing off the carby setup.
kroozzn63 ·
yeh man it was cool catchin up at the nats your bus is coming along well
is it lowered yet PICS PLEASE mine will be of to cbbvw as well in a week
kroozzn63 ·
whoops missed that "turbos" holy moly dude that motor is going to look like

56ovaltine yeah cool catchin up with you aswell. the bus if off to mikes shop on Thurs for a decent dumping. you can pick up a second hand turbo in good condition for $100 to $400 the rest of the cost is in the fabrication work needed to get it plumbed up.
pics will be here as soon as i get it back.
wacked1
pete wood ·
only four turbos, why not have one per cylinder. The throttle response would be awesome :thumb
I agree about fitting two though. Maybe you could sell the ones you've got and find some others. I am sure they'd go real nice on a smaller motor.
Whatever you do it's gonna be awesome though.
What tranny are you using. I saw some US guys using vanagon autos in turbo sandrails. they reckon they are heaps strong if you build them right.
Cam ·
vanagon autos need funky mountings apparently. Not sure on the specifics, but someone on shoptalkforums has one in a drag car and it's set off to the right.
wacked1 ·
just got it back from CBB.

Change of plans guys it was getting a bit hard finding go fast bits for the Leyland motor so I decided to toss that motor and conversion (it’s for sale click here >>> http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=24738&page=1#pid196356 ) and go for a bigger motor. A little while back I picked up a complete conversion for a Holden 308 turbo pattern motor and am going this route, reason being that parts are readily available for these motors and are also cheaper to build for example I was after a 4 barrel manifold and could not find one anywhere as with the Holden V8 I can pick up a top of the line 4 BBL manifold for about $100 at any swap meet big ported heads for $500 etc: they are also able to produce more HP than Leyland motors, in conclusion in the very near future my bus will be powered by a Holden 5L motor which should go a lot harder as the current setup which only made just over 200 rear wheel HP.
Cheers wacked1
getting rid of the leyland putting in a 308 5L custom injection here is a pic of the injection i got for it should have the new motor in 2 weeks just wanted something different to the newer holden injection setup I like the look of the custom manifold
[Edited on 15-7-2004 by wacked1]
wacked1 ·
update Holden 5L 308 engine build I've just picked up the heads today, they are ported polished jobbies with L34 valves roller rockers medium sized cam and lifters they flowed approx 400 HP induction is a custom made EFI with 4BBL type throttle body setup see pis in above post, bottom end not too over the top just freshened up with 30thou over flat top pistons and ARP rod bolts. Not sure of HP yet but will let you know when it’s in, hoping for 2 weeks time and should be good for 14’s if not 13’s this engine ran a flat 12 at eastern creek in a LJ torana. Can’t wait to get it going
Cheers wacked1
KruizinKombi ·
I should have posted this a lot earlier, but here goes anyway...
A friend of mine is right into P76's, he has about 15 of them, including chassis #001. His brother is (or was?) even the club president. He has been talking about a conversion for quite a while which uses the late model Commodore V8 injection and engine management system, upping the power from the P76 4.4 litre to around 185 Kw. That's a lot more than the stock 140 bhp this motor normally produces, and it comes with economy advantages as well, all for around $900.
While this is not first-hand info, it may be worth a look for anybody wanting to increase the power from their 4.4 converted kombi. It obviously won't help wacked1 now that he's decided to go with the 308.

the engine is out and now getting the engine bay painted so it looks a little better

setting up the dash with autometer gauges not too sure on how it should go. either replace standard petrol gauge with complete autometer gauge in dash setup or leave standard petrol gauge and cup mount the rest on top of the dash
wacked1 ·
sorted the dash problem!!! all i need now is the autometer spedo
cheers
wacked1 ·
and here are my muck around flames, did them in 2 hours
kroozzn63 ·
nice work keep us posted
ColumBUS ·

Yeah wacked1 show us what you have been doing. Remember me, we met at this year's Nats, I could not find the post for your ride. Thanks to vwenvy I can now see what your ride looks like, it's brilliant, however, we need more pics and an update. :bounce
