i can't find a picture of it at the moment, but everyone's forgotten about the coolest primered/rat ever... the super sh!t box
edit. in its day it ran 1/4's well down into the 11's so it would have to be up there with the fastest as well as the coolest... plus i think it might have been a dayly driver.

Its a Swamp cooller.... Old school air conditioner.... You put water inside it, and go for a drive.... The only problem with then is they where only made for the LHD market.... If you own a RHD car, your gonna get a very cold ear! But of course the passenger of a LHD car will get a chilly ear also!!!!!

The funny thing is.... The term 'Hoodride' was coined by the OG KCW (Grand Junction, Colorado) crew as far as I know... I think Derrick had someting to do with that, but I have a feeling it might have actually been John Jones who first applied it to VW's.... These car commmonly have narrowed frontends, raised transaxles and low tech airride suspension....The term 'Rat' was first used in a German VW mag back in the early 00's if I recollect. But it really took off when the HotRod culture grabbed it..... Here in Oz we have 'Rats' which seems to be all manner of VW's (and cool old school cars in general) in a slammed, preferrably OG rust/paint/interior condition. 'Hoodride' fits this description..... Now we are seeing a change in spec too, with cars showing up with detailed undercarriages and more HP.... My own Ragtop has the whole pan detailed with mega power and 4WDisc brakes, narrowed beam and IRS rear.... But the body is as God (Ferdinand) intentended, complete with the aforementioned OG rust/paint/interior!.... Now Im not one for catagorising a car or a style, but I guess my car would fit somewhere near the 'Hoodride' concept but with the HiTech (EFI/Intercooled/Turbo) power to take it to the HiPo racer crowd.... Bring it on!

The Source did a funny article about 5 years ago, where they interviewed brooklynites w/hoopties. They were real hood rides though, like 91 civic's dead stock that looked like they'd been found in a paddock. No dumping or bling to speak of. Genuine hood rides, or shit boxes. My 89 Barina would fit in nicely, although hopefully my 66 notch will end up being a fine example of the VW definition of hood ride.....

That looks like Dustin's (KCW) old 'snow plow'..... He flashed it up not long after that shot with custom RANDAR's, a new pan (The old one went under Derricks (Hoodride) Zwitter) and nice shiney metalic blue paint..... I have a video of Dustin diggin' that car out of the snow, rolling back the roof and start screaming around the streets of GJ... And that was back when he used to drive it without windows!!!!..... Nuts!

Im new to all this, can somebody please explain this "rat" thing you guys are into? you just buy something rusty as and reg it lower it and put nice rims on it yeah? im just used to doing up old mazdas and doing a shmicko paint job,lowering it and putting nice rims and polished alloy engine parts and making it go fast..

Its sooooo much more than that..... To some its about preservation, to others, its about the story that the car can tell, to others its something else. But the one thing that everyone agrees on, is that the car should be as unmolested as possible, as straight and rust free as possible, be slammed as possible and preferably early.... That said, there are exceptions to all the 'rules' and thats what makes it cool. The single biggest problem with trying to describe what a 'rat' is, is the fact that its different for everyone....
Personally, my car (my avatar) is in my opinion of what a good 'rat' is..... It is the proverbial 'one little old lady owner, genuine barn find', its got OG paint and never been hit, life scars with light surface rust, but no holes, OG accessories, is very low, is narrowed, has up-graded suspension and brakes, HiPo engine and transaxle, and is fully rebuilt underneath.....
But thats just my opinion.....

See now... Do you see the problems here?.... While the DC is cool, its not, IMHO, a Hoody in the 'traditional' sense..... Its got big 'bling' rims.... Not that big rims are an issue really, but it needs to be narrowed and seriously slammed, and its painted matt black (paint like that is more hotrod than hoodride)..... The bug on the other hand, has some of the 'right' elements.... Its very low, runs stock paint (well it looks like its stock!) and runs OG trim.... If its narrowed too then its pretty much on the money.....

Very nice Empi, I'm heading down to Old Bar on Saturday to pick up my new rat project.....one day hopefully it will be something like yours.
I have to ask, within regards to registering these things, do you guys go and get them roadworthied, inspected and regoed in pretty stock form, then just keep it regoed through the mod process, thats what I'm thinking I'll have to do, because you'd never get it regoed with all the ratty mods done!

Yep found in Townsville, it was painted white the owner
started to rub the white paint off and found the TAA signage
underneath. He has now sealed it to save the paint, priceless!

Managed to attend the Back to Brunswick Heads Hot Rod show and shine last Sunday, some cool cars including these gems.
