Well you can count on me for heaps of pics of your new baby
Brad ·
hehe... well lets see them then :>
If you get keen you can write a history blurb for me from what you know. I would be keen to track down the original owner to if anyone knows who built it .
11CAB ·
As far as I know it was built by Darren who had the Grey/Green one. It was built for a guy called Jamie in the Capalaba area. Many moons ago
11CAB ·
Would you like some pics of Baja Kombi's? I think I might have one or two here somewhere.......:P
ducky ·
Brad ·
Not seeing to many pics in my mail..... oh well guess no one cares :cry
Ever wondered how the big ass baja buses get so high ......
11CAB ·
But the engine & gearbox are lowered the same amount down from the chassis, so you dont gain any more ground clearence on the important bits......and makes it that more top heavy
11CAB ·
It does however mean that you can change the gearbox without removing the engine as the gearselector goes under the torsion bar.
It's doesn't seem to be a ongoing concern any more, but some pics and info, it's an australian site and i think it's creator was a member of this forum. Speak to 11 cab, he seems to know a little bit about it
:beer:beer:beer
contact me if you want pics and info on mine

Brad ·
Steve the Van man is member of thsi site aka MonsterBus..... I have some pics and info on that site myself. I will contact Steve and see if he minds me using his stuff and giving him acknowledgement of it ..
Monsterbus ·
Hey Brad,
My email is playing up so just incase you didnt get my reply feel free to grab what you want from the site. I dont have a login for it anymore, the site went offline at the 911 disaster and I've never been able to get back in since then so it hasn't had an update for a looooong time. I sold my Kombi about 3 years ago now to help finance a house build but still have the bug in my avatar. Anyway, good luck with the new site I look forward to seeing some new Baja buses (The bus was so much fun I bought a Jeep 12 months ago for my offroad fun)
Cheers
Steve

II CAB got it right. Ive got Darrens contact info if you need it from a few years back. Volksrestore used to maintain it for a few years. Always looked the bis.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
Seems to be a lot of my familys cars featured in this thread!!! All the ones that look serious or doing wheelstands!!
rocknrob ·
newoldmanx wrote:my ute ej20t & 091 with lockrite
lockrite? are you talking about a locking diff? I'm thinking i have to fit separate handbrakes...i hate it when one wheel spins at the wrong time😬
11CAB ·
Kombi's are a handful to drive offroad without having to worry about which handbrake lever to pull.........
Mine went most places I wanted to go without having a locker
rocknrob ·
yeah i can't beleive where my kombi will go now but when a crossing is washed out or a tree down and you have to turn around on a narrow bush track...😬 always one wheel spinning. Once i worked myself to exhaustion trying to get out til it got dark...so then i got a beer out of the fridge, cooked a steak and went to bed. next morning with a clear head i was out and away in 10 minutes....love my kombi😀

matberry ·
Thats like asking 'Would you miss your left leg?'

I bought an old white 58 splitty panelvan which was jacked up for off road years ago off the fella who had the lifted green one(darren from memory)Had plenty of good times off road in it and up the beach, hit the worlds biggest tree when it went straight ahead on a muddy corner once, knocked most of it out and kept using it till the engine blew coming back from double island point, be interested to know what happened to it after i sold it to someone in ipswich years ago.
1916baja ·
There is a red and white Baja splitty here at Mt gravatt. I think it's a panel with windows cut into it. I'm just waiting to see a for sale sign on it and then i'll pounce! I couldn't imagine driving a jacked up splitty on the beach though? they wouldn't perform all that well, would they?
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
A split set up right is awesome on the beach. Get rid of the swng axle box and go IRS then with good tryes and bal joint front end with disc brake conversion they are retty much unstoppable.
My cousin's 63 south African Panel Van has all bay window running gear under with renault tranny and a nice warm 2.0lt wedged in the back. With 12.5 33" BFG Mud Terrains on the back it will go just about where you point it.(if you are game enough)
newoldmanx ·
hey brendan any chance of some better pics of johns twin cab

do it have a pop top on it??? also does it have chrome bumpers and small 5 stud Merc rims??
11CAB ·
Here's some pics of John's I took out at Willowbank a few years ago
LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·
It now has 11R's on the front and 12.5 35 on the rear. Insane and overkill but that how my family like to do things..
newoldmanx ·
this is insane..
vwsteve ·
My old 58 split was a standard reduction g/box setup, when i arived at the beach north of noosa to go to rainbow it was high tide and easter weekend, it drove the whole way up the beach in soft sand(flat out) and even had to go up dunes at times to get around bogged 4wds, i can tell you if i had to stop it would have been all over but it made it the whole way without a prob, and turned a lot of heads and emabarrassed a few 4wds in the making🙂.
11CAB ·
I've added a whole heap more pics into the gallery here:

actually it lowers the center of gravity, picture above was of my old bus, did it to increase axel droop in those woops and to keep my cv's happy. did so many km's in that thing, couldn't afford to be chewing those things out all the time (besides is really not that low to begine with because of the length of the axels and the big tyres, never did bottom it out)
OZ Towdster ·
Not to mention thats our orange bus next to Nils ride when the previose owner still had it
nils ·
serious? haha! funny how these things all come full circle! have a few good photos of that day. (was after the bribie is. show about 5years ago) PM me if you want me to email you them.
Oh, and rocknrob i had 3 handbrakes in mine,(left, right and both with a ratchet) worked a treat!
matberry ·
Cool bus Nils

Leyland P76 V8 powered, IRS rear & disc brakes all round, twin fuel tanks, winch, & a partridge in a pear tree... went any/everywhere very fast :-)

& the sister splitty , carried my race mini to Targa Tasmania rally,,, followed as service crew the whole rally, then carried it back to brisbane again,,, work horse is an understatement :-) I bought this car as a bare shell from old mate Clayton in carina for a carton of xxxx largies & skull dragged it out from his back yard & built it up from there, sold it about 10 years later, but bough it back from a fella in camp hill & had another go with the old girl,,, it`s down in Lismore with some hippy doing it back up now
