They do put an amazing amount of work into the cars....I'm getting a books worth of notes from them as well....a blow by blow account of their work.....Makes for a great resto album馃槑
I'll send you the link to the Microsoft tool I use to resize my pics....it makes it so easy...just a right click...select resize....advanced resize...500 x 450...and away you go!!!

I dropped in to visit my car today and got a shock when Bel was not where she always is! She was outside catching some rays and my car looked very lonely. Bel looks fantastic in one colour and I understand your excitement. When our cars are finished, we will have to have a coming-out party.

Kim.....I'm pretty sure I'll stick to the Strato Blue....I love it and it should go well with her interior colours...Her engine is 36hp and she is still 6 volt..She was running well before the resto so hopefully it will all last.....I guess nows the time to think of overhauls while it's all out though. I'd hate for her to break down on me the first run out!!!!馃榾

I've just ordered new number plates....Figured it was getting near that time.....
I'm going for the old style black and white with VIC at the top... They only give you a choice of numbers between GAA 000 & LZZ 999.....GUB___ was issued back in 1958...so could have gone for GUB 158 and got that but went for GVW 158 which was available instead... 馃槑
Couldn't get VWT 158 in this style cos it is a future issue number...could only get it in the current standard style and would have cost me $105 more!!:jesus
So my plates will mean...Genuine VW Type 1 1958 model :thumb
I dropped all of the chrome bits off at the electro platers 3 weeks ago and they'll be ready to be picked up on Friday.....then I'll go to check on Bel again
The wait has slowed work down a bit on Bel as Ingrid needs them to finish off her work
When I rang on Friday to tell them Mick said they had Bel's engine and the exhaust system back in ...all painted up and looking very smick 馃槑

Dropped in to see Bert and noted that Bel is looking very fine. I have also bought black & white plates. When I bought the car, the original rego papers were in the drivers'manual and so I was able to order the original rego number. Have you received your pop-outs yet? I'm still waiting for my latches and so no work has been done for 3 weeks - very frustrating.

Things CAN just get bigger and bigger...and it all seems never ending....!! :jesus
Start with that and you have absolutely no delusions about getting a resto done 馃槑
Try and gather as many bits as you think you need.....but you'll always find yourself looking for more at the last minute, or praying real hard that you find that hard to get part you've been wanting before it's needed to go in....
When you're paying someone to do it for you, you don't have time to spare much.... Not like you're ride can sit in your shed and wait...But I must admit where I am they're pretty good with delays from your side cos they can get on with other quick jobs they have waiting....It all balances out...
I don't like to talk $$$ but it isn't cheap...and I'd never recop the money I've spent on Bel
Look at how far you want to take it... I never expected to take it this far...but then I'd started and didn't want to go through body work again in the near future.....hopefully it'll balance out in the end
Oh...and YES....I did get a liking for the idea of a Rag Top....and pop outs!!! :thumb

p.s. for doing what I did I think you have to absolutely love your ride...She was not what would be classed as a prize choice for the resto she's getting...
Bel folds memories and dreams for me...and has given me a lot of joy in the last couple of years at a very bleak time in my life...Through her I've kept going, found an interest/obsession...and made some great new friends....All good stuff!!...
If anyone is after a great looking older beetle..they do come up for sale already restored, much cheaper than restoring, ready to ride and ready to give a lot of joy to the person who finds them....
Before Bel I used to have a code of not getting attached to material objects....Guess I've changed 馃檪

Yes they do take a little longer than first planned and yes they do cost more than first planned,but looking at that 46 year old GEM,it's worth every bit of agro.And you have given birth-you have bought another bright ,shiny bundle of motoring joy into the world.Very well done.I recall keeping a record of costs on mine until it got to somewhere near where I had budgeted for-then suddenly I simply forgot to keep track of costs anymore.Wonder if everyone goes thru this?? Though looking at her the way she is and with the rag top she'd look a treat lowered a little...but then I'd probably have to put a bigtger engine in her and extractors etc to get the full effect.....
Stock look for now...maybe if I need a new engine or something I'd consider all the rest later...
Talked to them about a CD player in the glove box today...they think a 6 to 12 volt conversion to the stereo could work...anyone here done it?...It would be nice to have music
My other alternative is putting a 12 volt battery on tyhe oppisite side to 6 volt under back seat...would only mean I'd have to recharge it whenever....easy馃檪

I'm currently running a 12 volt inverter for the radio, but it,s not the same as having 12 volts. Especially if you use lights or wipers.... or indicators. or long periods of idling. I just got my 6 volt valve radio back from being restored, but I think I'll wait until I get the car in the same condition. Before I install it.

Visited my girl again today....little things happening all the time....
She had her beauty rings on today...I was almost thinking of saving them for special occasions but she has always had them on.....pity they scratch the paint on the wheels so much though
...and I think I may have a set of rubber mats I found out today...we'll see...If I have them, then I could go the square weave carpet 馃槑
I found that a lot of the rubbers I'd got for her were not right...door rubbers too fat and not soft...some other rubbers hard as well...Ingrid has given them back to me as she put in better ones..

My head isn't coping with decisions these days
- indicators about or below bumper...spacing...or in the headlight (well was thinking in headlight but can't picture a small harley indicator located in headlight...apparently it looks good)
- paint grab straps or get new repro

It apparently came off of a 58 imported beetle and was an accessory that came with it...it's made in Sweden..
The old guy said it came with the car the day he bought it....

It's a very different roof rack....really not too sure how effective it will be...sorta nothing to sit things on...they'd have to be long enough to rest and be tied firm so they don't slip off and scratch the nice new paint on the roof....don't think it's the most practicl of racks but certainly different

d trims 4 the front n rear windows....not stainless steel ones....aluminium....Dave was at VVD when I rang yesterday about them and he was helping to source what I needed
Apparently it was very common when they replaced a windscreen to used a cal rubber which Bel had...I needed d chrome trim....Bel did have her original but getting both anyway
I'm about to u2u u Brad....d trimmer will need some vinyl 2 do d arm rests...Sunday a good time at d swap meet?...I have d chrome trims still in d Dr L so I don't forget.... 馃榾

Got to talk to them about the carpet colour which has been a bug bear....I've wanted Charcoal all along ...It's along story but I was being told another colour would be better...more original...and it's not black
Charcoal is not in the country at the moment but just loaded onto a ship in Europe today heading our way.....it should be here in two weeks time if the pirates don't hijack the ship.... the container doesn't slip into the ocean in rough seas...or the container gets left sitting on a dock in Singapore

All that's done Dave... Had all new suspension n stuff done before she went in for the resto...engine was OK but they had been going over it all before she went to the trimmers.....the new wiring is all completed...just putting her back together now
Her exterior sun visor has been painted up for a while...that can go on...rear window can go in...interior door trims...but not much else left to do
It's just a waiting game....I could go on board the ship to watch over the precious cargo and make sure it arrives safely n not let the pirates get it :thumb

Hi Jenz.....I just wanted to let you know that I work in international freight, and if the goods were loaded onto the ship on Friday the 15th there is no way in the world that they will be here in two weeks, and it will have nothing to do with pirates. The transit time from Europe (any major port in Europe) will vary between 30 days and 48 days, and this can depend on a number of different things, the most important being the service used. You mention that the cargo is going to be transhipped in Singapore, this will add a significant amount of time to the transit, as Singapore is one of the largest freight hubs in the world and the numbers of containers moving through there are staggering. At the moment the international shipping industry is in the middle of what we call Peak Season, meaning that everyone wants everything now, causing a backlog of containers in places such as Singapore.
I currently have a container moving from Germany to Australia, and at the moment it's in Singapore, has been for a week and a half and won't be moving out until the middle of this week at the earliest. Also the tranist time from Singapore is between 12 - 15 days depending on the shipping line used. So two weeks is a myth. I'd be aiming for the end of November.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but this is my job, and if they are telling you that it's departed 15th, you won't see it for at least 5 weeks.

They are getting all the mechanical bits looking shmick for her....the end pieces for the roof had a lot of thick glue and thick vinyl stuck to them from several times of fixing up over the years...they have cleaned them up and will take to be sandblasted ....they are also putting flat black paint on the bits they need to.....
The carpet arrives the end of next week...the way it's all going they should be ready to move straight into the carpwet when they get it... 馃槑
The pieces on the table are for the rag-top...Dean laid them out for the pic...Tracy is not working on the rap-top.....they are busy with lot's of other jobs..so ignore the girl as far as work on Bel

Seats front and back have been repadded and covered in cool looking black fabric with a grey fleck through it
New hood lining kinda grey felt stuff.

Brad had already done Bel's seats for me in the colour combo she originally had ....red and grey with white piping.... before I'd decided on a paint colour...her original paint was off white... she was sky blue when I got her....I like blue so looked for a period blue ......... I think the colours will go OK together
I held a test panel against upholstery before deciding and it looked good.....my fingers are crossed that it will work together....

AVWPC rang to ask about her bottle....they didn't realise either....but the one she had was the sort that fits into the spare.....it always just hung....I didn't have pins n didn't realise it was for a 4 hole wheel :jesus
Could get a later model bottle bracketed in near the brake fluid reservoir but have decided to take the washers out at a later date now........would ask them to try n do it now but she wasn't going to be finished until Saturday arvo now as it is :cry

AVWPC do have a bottle but I haven't seen it...they were about to put it in...it's period as well.....just a 58 didn't have them...but now I'm told you could have them as an option....so confusing...my books say nothing...only that window washers came out with the 1960 beetle

Ohh she's OK I just put a new set of King and link pins in her, and new set of rear torsion bar rubber bush's. She also really like's the new rear venitian, genuine VW headlight mesh stone gards and I picked up a new german ATE master cylinder for her and a set of new wheel cylinders! thats the brake's sorted. I also have found a complete set of NOS 36hp bigend and main bearings, NOS oil pump, fuel pump rebuild kit, and various other Oval stuff! So once I get the new piston cylinder's and the heads done for ULP I should be able to have that spare motor sitting on the bench rebuilt for when the one thats in her now decides to call it quits, that way old Pige should last me out.

Thanks Dean...AND I have plenty of fluoro light so we can see of a night...I can remember you coming around after work to help me with Bel a couple of times and trying to hold a portable fluoro up so you could see what you were doing, and that wasn't all that effective

Eddies Commodore Vacationer is too long to fit behind Bel or the Trakka...I made it 10 mts long after the council giveing me grief over the size of the shed...it was going to be 11 mts

what a great shed...and i love the whole...your commodore is too large, lets get a golf...
but why restrict yourself...there are passets, golf, polo...even a nice newish bettle would do

Nathan we ended up doing the shed 10 mts long and 10.5 mts wide...the lean-to end is for the shelves..tools and gardening stuff..plus the push bikes
The local council kept knocking my plans back cos they said it ws too big and not allowing room for bird habitat..so we cut back in length which came up just a tad short for getting the commodore in behind even Bel..I could park Bel at an angle which could get all 4 cars in
The idea was for Eddie and I to be able to park the daily drivers behind Bel and the Trakka when we get home of a night馃お
It's amazing but Bel is almost as long as the Trakka..beetles are not that short in length 馃檯
So nice to have all dubs at home again and faithful Dr L was waiting for me at the station tonight like old times

...it did cost a small fortune when you think we had to get the old bungalow down and dig away some of the garden as well but at least we have something useable now..the bungalow wasn't worth saving
