11CAB ·

Not sure, I'm from Brisbane, but I do know we took the first Ormeau exit off the Highway heading north then drove west for a while......had heaps of fun

robnjo ·

did you go past a big quarry on one of these tracks?

11CAB ·

Yeah apparently it is near a quarry......I was told a lot of 4wd guys do winch challenges etc where we were.

ratty 63 ·

Hey - those vehicles look familiar :P

Dave (the owner of the blue Baja in these pics and my Brother!) has suggested that we hold an unofficial gathering in this area for all you off-road types. Is anyone interested? Just let me know and I will attempt to organise something that suits as many as possible. Be aware though - this area is quite rugged so you will need a vehicle that is capable and you will need to bring your own recovery gear (ropes , etc).

I hope that a few of you are interested as I am hoping to go as passenger and camera person....

Anyone up for it?

R

PS: Nice pics Graham! Love the one of Tim touching the ground which is almost level with his window!

They both have alot of lift. Do these cars both have Country Buggy spindles in them or something?

Great photos, looks like allot of fun.

Baja Wes ·

I haven't been to ormeau for ages. It was fun. There are some pics of my last trip here;
http://offroadvw.net/bajawes/offroad/ormeau.html

There are some pretty spots with good views. You can see in my pics that some tough 4wd's go there.

I wouldn't mind another trip out there. You guys should join the manxclub and make your trips manxclub trips. It's be more fun with more cars 😀

11CAB ·

Wes, I am in the Manxclub......and yes I'm trying to convince Dave & Tim to join....Dave is quite keen to have the manxclub do a run to Ormeau.

Ross, you need to get your Baja finished so you can play too....

Mike, both cars are running link pin front ends cut & turned and swingaxle rear ends.....Dave's has a 2 inch lift kit too.

Bash plates are a definate must too.

11CAB ·

hmmm mud

mmm could take festy, looks like some one car only tracks.....😉 that first shot,, yeah no worries......... :thumb how bad does it get? worse than the 'beginners' track at black duck? :o lol (k showing my wussiness now!).

ratty 63 ·

Ross, you need to get your Baja finished so you can play too....
...er...yes - I seem to keep getting sidetracked. I am hoping to have the EFI thing sorted in the next two weeks (had a break from it as the $ ran out), then its back to the bodywork. I can see the light at the end of the tunnel but for some reason I can't reach it!

Yep, as 11CAB said, Daves Baja (the blue one) is just running a cut and turned stock front end, the back end is just wound right up - body lift kit and huge tyres help with the ground clearance issues. Dave would be running a CB front if he could find one.... Tims car is running a similar set-up as far as I know.

$2.63, Dave tells me that the tracks can get worse than this! He was just having a play - nothing too serious. Interested in coming along for a go?

daz67 ·

Hell I'm up for it....

OZ Towdster ·

Coun't me in, god i hate mud and the cleaning job after but hey the fun makes up for it !!!!!!!!!

$2.63 homebrand baja ·

my biggest fear is breaking down or getting stuck, resulting in an embarrassing convoy hold up...... orrrrr getting lo-osst ...

daz and andrew...u guys WOULD be in it - ur cars are indi-struct-able,,, I don't have puncture resistant technology or tow'd bouncin power!

if it's anything like that man made obstacle course....... anyone got a spare seat???? :P

Boozer ·

yep😎

11CAB ·

Well it seems there are plenty of takers, so we might have to organise some dates....

ducky ·

fun fun fun, I reckon I could round up a couple of willing participants

$2.63 homebrand baja ·

hey ratty, when you say the back end is wound right up, (scuse silly q bu-ut..), do you mean the shockies or the actual spring plate thingy bits? After the blackduck episode I ended up putting a 1cm hole in the axle boot, I have adjustable shockies and as they are only a few mnths old I basically drove with the lowest setting, would tightening them up help prevent that from happening?..... ($2 dissapears b4 the snickering begins...one day I will convert to heavy duty stuff...one day!) 😉

OZ Towdster ·

Heather the blue Baja has not much more ground clearence than yours in the rear , what makes his look higher than yours is his modified front end, and i reacon if you were too pop down to brads shed for a day between yourself ,brad and ashley you could have yours up in the air too ,Now knowing that you have some spare front ends that would be even easier as you just drop of the front end one week ash modifies it and you pickit up next week and fit at leisure at home.

ducky ·

go for it homebrand

MUD BASHING ANYONE ?? ·

hi guys im tim out of the pics i took my back end up 1 inner spline from standed the ressen dave looks a little lower is because he has got a type 4 in it and the sump is a bit lower also his bash plate hangs down a bit but it is better than bashing a hole in your motor the front is a bit of a trick but a piece of piss to do all u need is a hack saw and a welder i have a spare early beam if u want it to practice or have it ready to put in so it will only be in bits for half a day so anyway when are you all keen to go i try and get there one afteernoon on most weekends if not all give me a call and let me now when your keen 0422048474:puke

Boozer ·

yeah a cut and turn is next on the list for me. maybe next weekend I can do it?

11CAB ·

Ok, most of the pics have been uploaded to the Manxclub gallery so check them out at:

http://www.netspot4u.com/~manxclub/gallery/Ormeau-2004

Andy42 ·

hey do you have a mud map or something on how to get to it??

$2.63 homebrand baja ·

A Westwood wrote:,Now knowing that you have some spare front ends that would be even easier as you just drop of the front end one week ash modifies it and you pickit up next week and fit at leisure at home.
*sigh* i am never going to have long fingernails again!

*double sigh* mental note : bleed brakes as planned tomorrow,, then go out and start fossicking for front end with easiest access and least amount of bits on.... hmm the one with the disc brakes looks good.
Mental calculation as to budget... outlook grim... mannnn I need a second daily drive so I can just start ripping festy to bits and start again!lol.

*tripple sigh* why did the dingbat previous owner have to weld the bullbar thing to the body, wat a hassle:alien

ducky ·

Nothing a grinder won't fix

daz67 ·

Andy42 wrote:hey do you have a mud map or something on how to get to it??
hey Andy, Its easy just click on the link provided!!!!:vader

11CAB ·

$2, if the front end you have in the car is a King & Link Pin then you will need to fit another one the same, ie the ball joint front end with disc brakes won't fit....... the torsion bars are spaced apart differently between the two styles.
Graham

daz67 ·

They actually look like decent hills. Did he actually get up them? Pretty impressive if he did in those pics anyway, he has his foot on the brake!!!

But really, they look steep.

ok I know how to get to the pics but that does not show me how to get to the spot itself😉 Might go check it out in the Van if they ever finish the gearbox:cry

11CAB ·

Daz, the hill I think you are talking about was very steep....we had trouble walking up it. No he didn't make it up but that was because we ran out of time...there are a couple of photos of his run up and there is a rock ledge at the front wheels that brought it to a stop....the close up photo is full of tyre smoke not dust as the rears bagged up on a rock trying to get traction......

$2.63 homebrand baja ·

😎 apparently I have some RX7 disc brakes on king and link.....

homebrand all the way!lol

Thats why I find std beetles so fascinating...I pulled one apart once, didn't know wat half the stuff I threw away was..oops....:P

sorry to sound like I am having a big gurly whinge b4.. I just seem to be fixing things every second day at mo (mobile restoration).. Just can't rip it off road and get stuck into it as yet.... give me 6-12months and I too will have bigbaja to destroy!

11CAB ·

Andy, are you talking about a Kombi Van? I took our Baja Bus on the Night Nav run and there is no way in hell I'd take it into the tracks at Ormeau......
Graham

As for where it is....we took the second Ormeau turnoff from the highway heading south and headed out west.....

Andy42 ·

Nah it is a Hz holden on a nissan chassis with a chev and Auto

$2 goes and sulks in the "not quite there yet" corner with andy.....:cry

Cal67 ·

Hi guys,
Thought I would finally jump in! I have been out there with Tim and Dave quite a few times in my HiluxSR5, it is definately tuff going. Graham is correct take the Ormeau/Kingsholme exit and turn onto Upper Ormeau road, follow this for a few klms go over a couple of cattle grids then turn right into a cut out section in the side of the road and have fun!!! Be sure to go with someone else as I have had several rescue phone calls from people going alone. If someone makes a date I will try and make it but unfortunately not in my VW as the ground clearance is a problem.
Cheers

MUD BASHING ANYONE ?? ·

yeah its just past an old wooden house its at the top of the hill that the house is on maby 100m on the right hand side if u have troble call me and i will take u there and give u the tour 0422048474😉

Baja Wes ·

When I was there, there was some tougher tracks but most were fine. The one thing we did all agree on was that a lot of the tracks were really rough in an annoying way, vibrating the crap out of us.

KGB ·

yeh we"ll be in for that

Mrs M ·

Well we will be in it for sure... the body on the Boof has been raised 2 inches now we just got to do the rear T/Bars and then no stopping us........ ohhhhh and a bash plate

Dave... we will give you a call and take you up on your offer soon......

Moniek

11CAB ·

OK......for anyone interested we are doing another trip to Ormeau this Saturday at 12pm

Anyone who wants to come can meet us on the western side of the Ormeau turnoff.
Give me a call on 0403 325 725
or Tim 0422 048 474
or Dave 0412 750 445

11CAB ·

The blue & green baja's both have 27Mhz CB's and I'll have a handheld UHF so if you do come either of these would be essential.
Give us a call before Sat to left us know who's coming

11CAB ·

ducky ·

so did anyone go on saturday???>??

11CAB ·

Yep....what a blast....we had 2 baja bugs, 1 manx, a high lift range rover, hilux, and a tag along Bundera. The manx , blue baja & the rangie did a track called "Carnage Canyon" which looks to be a water course between two hills. Apparently a 4wd club was using this track as one of their tough courses that night, and I bet they would have been dissappointed to know two 2wd volkswagens got through.....:P
Hopefully Kurt or Gunter can post some pics from their digital camera. I took 2 rolls of film on Tim's camera, so hopefully he'll get them developed soon and can post the pics too.
Graham

daz67 ·

So where are the Pics????

11CAB ·

So did everyone get a good look at the metallic green manx at Dubs?? Cos it came very close to landing a rear guard on a very large rock.....had 6 guys pic up the back of the buggy to correct things....would've been a shame to damage such a nice buggy, it is very tough tho.........also found Dave's baja swims well until the Porsche fan starts to go under water......

ducky ·

i'LL PROB HAVE TO HELP THOSE GUYS ATTACH PICS, NOT THAT PUTER LITERATE. bUT GLAD THEY WENT AND HAD FUN

How do we get a login to the Manx club gallery to add pictures?

Baja Wes ·

not sure. Maybe brad erased or turned off the registration feature by accident.

I have set-up a gallery that unregistered users can post pics to. I have called it ormeau 2.
http://www.netspot4u.com/~manxclub/gallery/album153

Please post the ormeau pics there. It automatically resizes the pics for you and stuff.

[Edited on 8-6-2004 by Baja Wes]

Baja Wes ·

ok, I made an ormeau 2 folder, for the pics of the second trip. You can find it here;

http://www.netspot4u.com/~manxclub/gallery/album153

I have set it up so anyone can add photos to it, even without registration. I will ask Brad where the registration thing is, or how to get your username and password.

MUD BASHING ANYONE ?? ·

so anyone keen for another run maybe this time on a sunday for those with work commitments it was great fun last time but more cars means more fun i know kurt and his mate in the rangie had a ball but but we want to see all of u offroad nuts out there showing four wheel drivers is only an option to have a front diff and dont forget the baja day out at toowoomba is on the 11th july i was out there today and brendan has been making a few mods to the track with more mud holes, banks, twists and turns to make it even more fun than last time so if your keen to have a hoon or just watch them come out theres a bbq and drinks for sale as well as alot of parts and cars for sale😉

ratty 63 ·

Hi all,

I have just posted the photos that Tim (Mud Bashing) gave me - they are on the Manx Club Site (Nice site too!). It's worth a look - Dave shows how not to cross a creek in his Baja! He, he, he! 😀

R

PS: I'm up for the Sunday run - just say when!

11CAB ·

This isnt a VW, but a 4wd pipe frame buggy, running 42 inch tyres which you cant see on the back because they're under water.........pic was taken at Ormeau just recently after all this rain. And the tow rope connected is pulling another car out.............:o
