Hi all,

Doing some budgeting for rubber bits that I need to get when I get the car repainted...

Generally what are the parts that I need to replace?

I came up with this list:
- all 4 window rubbers
- fender beading
- front hood seal
- engine lid seal
- vent wing seals
- vent wing flag seals
- bumper brackets seals(?)
- rubber for the fuel hole (don't know what it's called :P)
- window felt channels

What else did I miss? Just wanna replace the essentials....

What about the rubber seals under handles etc?

Your list looks pretty comprehensive.
Suggest you try the West Coast Metric web site.
http://www.westcoastmetric.com/ I found bits that I didn't even know existed. It's a good place to start your list and see what's available at the same time. It may even work out cheaper to import from o/s than to buy locally, depending on shipping costs. Out of interest what species of VW is it?

ronster ·

Thanks PurpleT3, it's a 74L bug.

There are the inner and outer door wind up window scrapers, the blinker, tail light housing and number plate housing seals.
Wiper shaft 'bong grommets'

What colour is the dub gonna be. You can get black or white fender beading!

next time your at Vintage get a Cattle dog and use a high litter pen and just go through the book and pen every item thats applicable to your year model car.

you will have to make up your mind if you want to remove the window chrome trim or replace it... the Cal look are much easier to fit.

Boris will give your a good rate as your a prefered customer.

So have you found a panel shop to do the work ???

ronster ·

Definitely going for the cal look window rubbers, hate the chrome fading look :puke

Are there bits that I definitely should replace or I'll regret later?

the window scrapers like alright... don't think i'll need to replace them...

got new tail light housings, so won't have to the rubber seal for them....

prob go with black fender beadings

Don't hold your breath with the window scrapers. I have been able to take a couple out without damaging them, but it is pretty close to impossible. Wait and see if you or the panel shop can get them out without damaging them!

Depends on how good a job you want ... if your happy for the paint shop to just mask up the door windows, then it shouldnt be a problem.

If they have have to be removed then you find that you will need to replace innner, outers, and bailey channel felts.

Hi all,

Thanks for all your replies! Much appreciated.

This seems to be the final list:
- all 4 window rubbers
- fender beading
- front hood seal
- engine lid seal
- vent wing seals
- vent wing flag seals
- bumper brackets seals
- window felt channels (long and short)
- inner window scrapers
- outter window scrapers
- door handle seals
- bonnet handle seal
- engine lid handle seal

Do the impact strips actually protect your bumpers or are they for looks?! Has any one got them?

Just a point here - it is possible to get other colours of fender beading if you try OS. I got mine in a beige sort of colour from wolfsburg west

Apparently you can get blue and red ones from classic veedub!
