Amazer's old kombi (bay window turbo fuel injected) used to do mid 14's I think..... I'm sure he will know exactly.

Hey Guys,
I have a magazine around somewhere...I think its Volksworld from about 5mnths ago, Pommy mag....guy has a 2332, usual engine for drags..big heads 9:1 comp fk89 and IDA's . It is a van with no windows...but not a split from memory. It was the first bus to lift the front wheels outside the U.S. (about a foot). did 14 seconds...and wth a few future adjustments to gears etc....wanted to get into the 13's.
I'll look at home for it...
Matt
pete wood ·
It's an early bay Panel van.
It is bottle green (with a matt black nose panel and polished wide 5 Erco wheels). It is lifting the front wheels in the pic.
It's in issue No.1 of Ultra VW on page 63 in a Bug Jam report.
According to the caption, it is owned by Mark Prosser and ran a 14:32 quarter. The writing on the side says,
"Auto Techniks, type 2 performance".
boof2332 ·
Thats the one....
I was looking tonight for the mag...I couldnt find it.
Pretty impressive for a bus..low 14's, especially normally aspirated. Wouldnt you like to run a few people in that to see their faces....

Back in the early 80's a US bay was doing 11's with a turbo TIV an slicks.
The bus was the company hack during the week! The bus lives in Belgium now with a hot T1 engine in it.
Kawell's had a very fast splitty that did 10's, but was far from legal, though it was driven on the streets!!!!
I'm looking at low 15's - high 14's with my T3 when I finish it! If I can get the trans to hold together!!!
wacked1 ·
i want high 12's- low 13's, can you get any info on these busses? re trans
and 10's from a splitty with what type of engine? was it a conversion?
thanks

Don't know if it's relevant, but the guy who owns the C&V prepped gray drag beetle was using a type 1 swingaxle box in front of his 700hp+, turbo-nitrous, Pauter engine. He reckons the key to keeping it all together is bracing the case as per this page, http://perso.calixo.net/~dubois1/smallw7.jpg
And also staying with a maximum 8" slick. He said that Ron Lummus always broke stuff when he used wider tyres than that.
This webpage also has some interesting advice on trans building for racers,
These guys took over the market when Holinger went upmarket.

Check out www.lbc2.com they have the specs on a bus in the UK that's pretty quick. And would go quicker if he took the camper kit out of it!
humpty ·
Wacked1....All the busses I mentioned ran VW transaxles. The Kawell Splitty was pure drag....So don't even think about! The bay ran a late 091 trans that was built to the hilt and I think the whole rear end was mounted in a fabbed subframe, as you no doubt know, there aint a whole lot holding one of these together and even a warm 1600 can do some serious damage under there!
When I finish my under carriage on the my bus I'll be posting some pics...hopefully that might help a few people out....

had the locals check my bus out and as you know it runs a 4.4L V8 and has been for the past 10 year,s they said it's fine. my bus a had a tough life as well. i was just thinking of upping the HP output a little anyhow, Mike @ CBB has fabricated a gearbox mount to handle the extra HP it is a customized VN Cumondoor unit, will try to get some pics. BTW cant wait to see some pics humpty can you email some progress shots to me at

No problem.....I haven't done that for a while.....Looking to get down the farm next week to do some more work...Haven't touch it for over 4 months cause of study and family commitments, not to mention the wife!
You bus sounds like a monster.....There use to be a 4.4 Leyland powered bay here a while back...Man that thing got along well....An EFI 308 or later Ali Chev or Ford would be even better....Or maybe a Lexus!!!!!
Stop it Simon, your giving youself new projects....Maybe I should sell the SVX and go Lexus!!!
wacked1 ·
yes that bay is mine i shipped it over about 4 months ago is it the green and white one and yes thinking about the lexus swap down the track.
what year is your bus?
cheers

Oh....I have gone late on this one....First WBX I have ever owned....
It's an 85 model panelvan....Super ugly at the moment, but I have hope for it in the future....Don't see too many late buses done up here in Oz...Loads in Europe and it is nice having all those creature comforts...
Maybe I'm getting old!

yep humpty. thats my old bus that wacked bought. I'm glad he seems to be enjoying it !

planning the next project for when we move back to wa in a couple of months. Being a bricky by trade and going back to work for myself i need a vehicle that can pull a trailer so going to try our hands at a late bus with a holden supercharged ecotec six if i can get one. will be in touch to pick your brains in the near future bus 23q. hey simon can you post the vid of the green meany on the vid post this page ,the one coming around the bend. Me, andrea and quitabug should be back in perth late oct looking forward to catching up and show you my volksrod 1916.

The plan with mine so far. I’m going to toss the 4.4 V8 and convert to a Holden engine it’s a 5L 308 I've just picked up the heads today, they are ported polished jobbies with L34 valves roller rockers medium sized cam and lifters they flowed approx 400 HP induction is a custom made EFI with 4BBL type throttle body setup, bottom end not too over the top just freshened up with 30thou over flat top pistons and ARP rod bolts. Not sure of HP yet but will let you know when it’s in, hoping for 2 weeks time and should be good for 14’s if not 13’s this engine ran a flat 12 at eastern creek in a LJ torana. Can’t wait to get it going
Cheers wacked1

I saw Amazer's Kombi race at Willowbank in 1994 and it was running 14's from memory. Also saw a T3 dual cab in a magazine that runs 11's with a V8.
wacked1 ·
anyone got a pic of Amazer's Kombi ?
humpty ·
bigbruvabob.....Can'y wait to have you guys back over this way....The scene here is a little slow, and it needs you touch to spice it up a bit! As for your bus project...I think there was one for sale on the forum a short while ago....The cost to do the conversion yourself aint cheap....Justa thought.
As for a Pic of Chris' bus on two wheels.....I think I have one somewhere, but from memory it was the 2 right hand side wheels!!!!! Hitting the a corner in the sprint @ Valla!
As for VW powered busses only.....Pppphhrrt!
Why leave it there? Racers are hotroddeers as far as Im concerned, and the definition of a hotrodder is someone who attempts to make a vehicle do something it shouldn't by what ever means possible.
[Edited on 21-7-2004 by humpty]
BUS 23Q ·
i must be a hotrodder then... i m maken my car do something it shouldnt. i m hopping to get my kombi into the low 13 maby 12 in the future... also y was there only 3 of us kombis racing at the nats.... more people should join in...

Still reckon a Lexus V8 would be a better option....
That said....A bombed 308 will scoot, but I wonder about the balance of the bus???? Time will tell!
I seems to remember a monster bus from FNQ or somewhere that had a commie V8 in it?
Go to it, I want to know how this goes as I'm sure a few others do.

Maybe it stayed together because it doesn't produce anywhere near 700hp !!!!

yeah i like the racks alot ,mine is a 4 bow polished stainless westy rack with a polished stainless ladder from creative . my girlfriend made me get a ladder now i think i like the ladder the most on my entire bus.
the rack is for a split but i think they fit on bays aswell

I did a lot of 14.8's and 1x 14.68 at uphill eastern creek probably 5 or 6 years ago. It was a daily driven, regular fueled VW engined.
i've seen that pic before and didn't even know it was yours.
BTW one cool bus

here's a challenge for you guys.
First w/e of november is the Volks Enthusiasts club of S.A. show on Adelaide.
On the Saturday there is Drag racing at Adelaide International Raceway, and there is a special VW bracket.
I'm keen to run my v6 bay, and theres an ej20 T25 bus that's gonna run again, and now a VR6 T25 bus too, and prob another ej20 T25.
The challenge is for you guys to drive over for the w/e, race your busses on Saturday, and embarrass some ricers and wannabe's, then enjoy the show on sunday.
are you up for it??? 🙂

Doug Sweetman wrote:Whatever happened to that old engine / kombi ?
I wanted to do serious racing and the kombi body was being over stressed so swapped some bits for it with Hellbug. It suffered a couple of years of abuse at Hellbug as a parts chaser. After that it was sold to a nursery in southern sydney somewhere and filled to the roof with things that smell, dynamic lifter, fertilisers etc. I think it may still be doing that. It is now being serviced by Dunhams in Wonoona. Hasnt changed at all. Still has the cookies, still has the wires hanging from the roof where the light should be, still has the crap tape deck in the dash. Only differences are the seats are trashed, the cookies are trashed, and the paint has crows feet. Sad to look at.
The engine went into my fastback and has never ran properly since, although it has mangaged to break 2 gearboxes, which the kombi never did. Managed a popping and farting 13.8 in adelaide a long time ago. It is now sitting on my garage floor, with spooky little bits of metal in the sump. It still runs fine, just doesnt go hard. High 14's at the nationals I think.
wacked1 ·
amazer what was done to your gearbox?
amazer ·
When it was in the kombi, nothing. It was a stock 2 litre box.
In the fastback it was a kombi box with the berg adapter stuff, standard gears at first. I blew 2nd gear flat changing at Bathurst. After that I borrowed another kombi box that had albins gears, but blew first gear out of it at the nationals this year doing a burnout but missed the water. Dont believe that guy out in front who tells you where to stop.
Doug Sweetman ·
Must be hard to see a car that you have rebuilt go to the dogs like that....
I've sold one or two of my cars before, but I've been lucky (I think) never to see them again since. Would hate to think what could have happened after all the hard work I put into them.
So there is probably still a future for the engine to live again - once uni is finished and you are 'gainfully employed' (I think thats what they call it) ?
