Since this is more of any info issue than a tech article I thought I would post here as well.
For those of you who care the the Brad & Wes show will begin tommorrow. WE are going to put a Mazda V6 into Wes's Baja. I am very excitted as I will get to hack huge amounts of metal out of Wes's pristine and well loved Baja.
We will be updating the transplant Diary Daily so keep an eye out if you care.
The Diary is on our offroadvw.bet website under projects.
Jeez Brad, i hope you pay more attention when your cutting Wes's baja about... LOL

I'm looking forward to seeing the progress of this conversion. Nothing quite like a good butcher session. :o I'm sure Wes won't let Brad get too out of control though! :thumb

HAHAHAHA good call 🙂
i'll keep an eye out! i wanna see photos of you with a psycho glint in your eye, as your hacking the Baja! 😀
can't wait for the project updates!
And may the force be with you... :vader
Buggy Boyz ·
That is Wes's department, I mean if I do cut to much we will just have to make it into a Buggy now won't we :>
There will be heaps of photos and info updates..
Stay tuned ...
Buggy Boyz ·
It's Wes here, on Brad's computer.
Vdub2c, yes there is a photo of Brad with that glint in his eye. He seems to enjoy it a little too much. I have to restrain him a little :vader
If this conversion turns out to be anywhere as good as I think its going to, they'll both have good reason to smile. :thumb
BTW, I didn't move this topic, I don't know who did 🙂

Buggy Boyz ·
I thought I would tidy it up, just a clever ploy really to get into both areas 😀
It was way cool cutting into Wes's Baja with a great big saw 😀 Didn't get to use my 9" grinder but there is still tommorrow ..
I mean how cool does his once prestine Baja look with a little Bradifucation.
Was funny really Wes didn't even show any real interest in disecting the beast himself, he simply said " yeah I reckon we need a hole about here " so I took that as permission to arc up the Recipricating saw and flex blade :thumb:thumb
Che Castro ·
good luck guys
56astro ·
OHHH MY GAWD!!!!!!
:o
:o
:o
A smile on Brad's face, but a tear in Wes's eye I'd reckon.
kombi_kid ·
ahahahhahahahaha looking good i love the whole"cut about here" attitude bothing ever for certain is it 😀
cheers
rhys
p.s. looking good
vdub2c ·
i'd just like to say it looks unreal... congrats on a good job so far Wes and Brad :thumb
you guys have got guts to put that engine in the bug.. and it looks unreal already!
ten outta ten thumbs up 🙂
:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb:thumb
Buggy Boyz ·
it's Wes here again.
The latest update is ready for viewing. Remember to refresh your browser if you can't see the new stuff.
We are getting to the stage where we are getting an idea of how it will all look bolted together, and I must say it will look right at home in the Baja's engine bay. you can hardly notice it there with the engine cage on

Looking Great guy's.
Hope you've got something to keep the front wheels down! 😀😀😀
vwdave ·
Hi guys, the Baja's looking good!!
Just wondered what type of tube bender brad used to make up the rear engine support frame- it looks really neat.
Look forward to more instalments, keep up the great work!!
Later
The_Bronze. ·
Hey Guys, Just noticed you post. I've been away for a couple of days and busy before that. Haven't been in tech for ages. I was going back and checking you diary though Wes and will have a look after I catch up on most of the Forum stuff. It looking good I must say from these couple of pics.
Looks like the ultimate X-mas present.
Buggy Boyz ·
I use a bender from a company called Speedwerx down in Victoris, it is just like the one on Blind Chicken Racing . Works very well and since Darryl and I went halves it wasn't that badly priced.
The bender itself rolls teh pipe so as not to kink it.
reub ·
Looks great Wes and Brad.
Can't wait to hear how it all goes.
I started the tear down of VeeWRX today. Should be ready to lift the body off tomorrow. Am taking heaps of pics like you to share.
Take it easy......yeah right 🙂
11CAB ·
Wow guys, thats a really professional looking job you got there.
Will it be finished for the Beach trip in Jan, if so I'll be keen to take a look. Wes, that should be one nice cruise up to Townsville.
Have you started on the wiring yet? Did you end up getting a wiring diagram for the engine?
Well done, and I look forward to seeing the finished product. :thumb
Buggy Boyz ·
Wes has to be back in Townsville to start work on 6 Jan, so will probably not make it to teh Beach trip. He may cruise up with us on the Saturday if all is running well.
We hope to have it driving by this weekend. If not the call will be Wes's but I think it will be staying here as he doesn't wish to drive teh baja 1400km wihout at least a week or road testing.
Buggy Boyz ·
The_Bronze. ·
Yes - I have been following your install very closely, every day almost. It appears things are going well and I really wish I was there. I could be your dog wrangler! What breed is he by the way?
Everything looks pretty sweet so far. If anything were to break from the added HP what do you think it would be?
I to am very keen to have a squizz at the finished product - I could be any use at anything I could do the wiring for you but somhow it look like you know what your doing.
Thanks for keeping us posted, blow by blow.
KruizinKombi ·
That's looking excellent so far guys! Awesome bar-work! :thumb

The_Bronze. wrote:If anything were to break from the added HP what do you think it would be?
My neck! 😀
kombi_kid ·
so have you started it up yet????
cheers
rhys
Buggy Boyz ·
The Dog is an Australian Silky and is way to cute for his own good.
No we haven't started it up in teh car yet, Wes keeps stopping me, something about making sure it is all good to go before he turns teh key :>
KruizinKombi ·
He really does like to make sure he's nutted everything out first, doesn't he? 😎
Che Castro ·
hehe man that looks awesome!
that dog is so cute! its like a little toy!
Buggy Boyz ·
Well it is getting closser. The cage is all but finished, the engine is in, radiator in wires are being run and I have almost finished the rear disc brake install.
With some luck we will kick her in the guts tommorrow 😀😀
Even made a nice class 4 style tow hitch so Wes can get pulled out backwards :thumb
56astro ·
Wes,
Regarding that heater/blower for the windscreen demister; where did ya get it? What did it come off? Do you know where I could get one similar, as I too need one for the Eng Cert?
The transplant diary is a great read. I check it out daily.
Buggy Boyz ·
I pulled it out of a 60 series crusier. It sits under the drivers seats in teh delux model.
Buggy Boyz ·
It lives :> Wes fired it up today and it sounds sweatttttt
Should be complianced nd legal before the weekend .
kombi_kid ·
hope everythingt goes well do u have a picture of the finished product???
cheers
rhys
Buggy Boyz ·
Yep Wes even went for a drive up and down the road tonight :thumb
humpty ·
Well done guys...Finally we see some one doing something different.....When you said you were going to do this I though you were mad....I can see I was right...You guys are bonkers! Don't you guys work!
Well done!
Know if I can get my Sub flat six conversion finished that quick!...Yeah right....
Buggy Boyz ·
Well as teh baja and Wes drove up my Drive way and headed back to his house a little drop of waterhit the ground. It was the end of and epic but now it was over.
Yes we are mad !! to many said it could not be done, well they were wrong and the end result was no less than awesome. All that power .... WOW... now when we finish teh climate control, that will be cool 😀😀
Yes we both work, but we are currently on Holiday 😀😀
There should b an update in the next day or so as Wes took the camera with him when he left..
END RESULT WAS VERY VERY COOL 😀😀
Baja Wes ·
All I can say is, it's nice how smoothly things go when you plan stuff properly. The engine starts and runs whenever you want, all my so called weird ideas seem to have worked.
There is a word only update on my website. Unfortunately there is no USB plug on this computer so I can't upload the pics off my camera :cussing
I will upload some more pics sunday arvo when I get back to Townsville.
kombi_kid ·
man use are awesome!!!!!!! cant wait to see it at valla!!!!!!!!
cheers
rhys
56astro ·
Well done guys,
you must be very proud of your new creation,
like Rhys, I can't wait to see it at Valla. The burn-outs in the car park are going to be somethin' this year!!
The_Bronze. ·
😀😀😀 EXCELLENT JOB WELL DONE 😀😀😀
I love it when a plan come together. I was reading daily - twice sometimes when I was too early. Of course I am envious but who wouldn't be.
I reckon you will of course have the inevitable niggly problems but let hope they are all too minor to disrupt the fn and games you going to have in it. The torque will be the big bonus and the best thing is that it dosen't seem to run to hot going from what you wrote.
Did you end up shrouding the tranny at all from the radiator being directly above?
I am so pleased for you both. A lot of hard work, patience, and of course the dollars. Haven't read you update yet today but will be there after this thats for sure.
:bounce Congratulations guys. :bounce
Baja Wes ·
It's alive!
The diary has been updated for the last time for quite a while. Please add your comments on the transplant in my guestbook.
[Edited on 5-1-2003 by Baja Wes]
Baja Wes ·
Bronze, the fans suck air from the gearbox area and blow it out over the engine, so shrouding the gearbox is not necessary. The gearbox probably gets a lot of cooling from the air flow.
KruizinKombi ·
Awesome work guys! :thumb:thumb:thumb
DeRrO ·
Fellas
Wes I have been following your page very closely. It is nice to see some going a diffent direction with VW's.
I am intersed to see how the added weight in the rear will actually affect the offroad abuiltly of your car, as this is one the common discouragements you get when you think about a engine conversion.
Youe page has been very helpful, as i am currently rebuilding my onw baja. I wrecked the front clip off roading in our local dunes.
Now the question for me is do i stay with a VW engine hmmmmmmmmm 😉
Cheers
Joel
The_Bronze. ·
Cool thanks Wes - I thought you thermos blew the air down to on top of the tranny. I didn't know they were sucking up end into the engine cavity.
There was some talk a while back about shrouding. Good thing it's not needed then.
I posted in your guest book. Back to the Grind to pay for it all eh! I have some grinding of my own to do in a couple of week so the post count will surely go down again I guess. Need to pay for the last 6 years of education by educating.
What goes around... 🙂
Che Castro ·
very cool!!!
would like to see it go down the 1/4
kombi_kid ·
hey wes
just oput of interest how much did it cost you for the whole fandangle???? and what cost do u reacon you saved by gettin brad to help you??/
cheers
rhys
Baja Wes ·
Well Brad himself didn't really save me any money, just a little time. He lost interest after the hole cutting part and played with his buggy anyway :vader
Just kidding, thanks for helping Brad :thumb
I will put a list of cost on my site once I get all the costs together. Brad has to email me the list of stuff I got him to pick up for me while I was stuck in Townsville.
humpty ·
Wes & Brad...
You've done us Aussie V Dubbers proud......Just goes to show where a little lateral thinking will take U! I'm air all the way with my bug but the bus is a different story! Just goes to prove U can have your cake &.........! Now we need some mpegs of it in action!!!????
Well done!
Buggy Boyz ·
Baja Wes wrote:Well Brad himself didn't really save me any money, just a little time.
That is cool Mr Wes, since I didn't save you any money I will be sending you a very bice bill for all the resources that you destroyed of mine. Also the bar shop down the road works on $80 per hour so you had better get an evening job to pay for the 2 weeks of my life you stole :cry
Then again I am expecting to get you and your shed for 2 weeks straight when I do my buggy, so mybe we will wait till then and call it even 😀
[Edited on 6-1-2003 by Buggy Boyz]
humpty ·
Hee, hee,heeee!
You tell'em, Brad.....
What ya gonna do with the buggy...Make it mid engine with a Gas Turbine?
kombi_kid ·
hey
thanks wes!
how do you rate these engines overall in the terms of torque and top speed etc??? do you reacon they would pull a kombi then say a WRX motor?
cheers
rhys
OvalGlen ·
Looks well done.
So Brad are you going to do engine change too?
Now you'll have to make more horespower than Wes so maybe turbo Rotary? 🙂
I love that bar work.
Buggy Boyz ·
I will be putting the same engine in my Manx if Wes's beds in OK. You are correct I can't have hime going faster. Then again he has always been soft off road so kicking his ass in teh bush will never be a hard thing to do 😀
Baja Wes ·
Thems fightin words :vader
I'm not soft, I just don't try to break my car every 2 minutes. Say didn't you just break both of your frame horns off :puke
Besides, with all the crap welded to your manx it will be heavier than my Baja, so with the same engine I will go faster. You'd better go for a Lexus V8 if you wanna even up the power to weight ratio 😀

DeRrO ·
Here a pic of what i did to my car :P
DeRrO ·
Can see the pics of the actual car in the members rides. Its the white Baja. Im rebuilding a new chassis for it.
Baja Wes ·
Nasty crack.
If anyone is interested, I have put prices of my conversion on my website.
matt ·
you blokes are awsome, only one question though, how do you keep the beast cool?
what do you guys do for a crust?
did you have any probs with the roadworthy?
Matt
OvalGlen ·
you are just "show offs" Keep Up the Good Work. 🙂...😎...🙂...😎...🙂...😎...🙂...😎...🙂
KruizinKombi ·
So how quick would Wes's motor be in a 75 kombi? 😀
fatboy ·
Kol - Depends how long he turned his back for 😀😉😀
Baja Wes ·
Well I am hoping that the radiators current position above the gearbox will work ok. And it seems to have no probs. I might put some air scoops on it if I get bored. The radiator is the MX6 one that came with the half cut. It comes with two computer controlled 2 speed thermo fans
For a crust, I am a mechanical engineer.
To get stuff like this approved is easy, just do what the code says and an engineer will approve it.
As for speed in a kombi, go to http://www.offroadvw.net/tech/calc.htm
and download the cal prog (need excel 2000)
Using that I guess a kombi with a KLZE V6 will do 0-100 in low 6s, and 1/4 mile is mid 14's.
kombi_kid ·
hey
that radiator position can obviously only be achieved in a baja right? cause the lift u have on it! where would you recomend as a good spot for a radiator on a bus thats chassis is about 24 cm off the ground?
cheers
