https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/24785/black-betty-updated-thurs-4th-august

Che Castro 路

Hey here's my new mini project. I bought it as an incomplete project. Just needs an interior and some assembly.

Its a 1960 body - resprayed in black. Its currently sitting on a semi auto pan which has been converted to manual. This will be soon be moving onto another pan which came with the project - its been blasted, resprayed, forks welded, manualised, front end rebuilt etc. Pics soon when i pick it up 馃榾

This is the interior, full of boxes of parts which i have to sort.

I will be selling a lot of this stuff soon.

some one lost interest, hey?

Che Castro 路

My current ride - original stock '63.

He'll have to sit in the cold this winter whilst betty gets fixed 馃檨

Oasis 路

Where in Five dock are you?? You probably live next door...

Che Castro 路

Here's a pic of the pan that came with the project

Its got a rebuilt front end, welded forks, stock disc front, EA falcon rear. Koni reds all round 馃檪

Che Castro 路

I'm just near barnwell golf course, down the road from Five dock leisure centre. Where are you abouts? What do u drive, probably seen u around a few times!

Oasis 路

I'm in Barnstaple rd near the main road, White Beetle in the Avatar
<<<<<<I usually park out the back of the house though... I'll look out for you

Danny

He cleaned it up to get this in there

Alex Holzl 路

sweeeeet ride keep us up to date

wacked1 路

i like black betty:thumb

Che Castro 路

Hehe, last night i attempted a clean up. But the garage still looks as dirty!!!except everything is sorted and i chucked out everything i dont want. Will be posting a few things for sale soon.

Hopefully should be able to get the good pan in sometime this week/end and swap the body over. There should be a Manualised semi-auto pan up for sale - its the one its sitting on now.

There's actually three cars now, my dad's Honda prelude (u can sorta see it in one of teh pics on the corner) will be parked outside to make way for the good pan 馃榾 hehe

Trying to organise and decide on an interior. Right now I am thinking of recovering the seats in VW brick red, to match new TMI doorpanels in brick red/ cream. Beige cloth headliner, no carpet (weighs too much!) - hope to get the front jap seats recovered in brick red vinyl to match as well.

I'm going to try to make my own rubber floor mats, unless i can source a good used set.

Bizarre 路

Jon

what about the other pan??????

Che Castro 路

Which one? 馃檪

The one I was building up has been manualised and dipped and painted. Will be selling that.

The one it is sitting on in the photos will be for sale as soon as i swap the black body onto the good pan. It has been manualised too

Bizarre 路

Also picked up bundles of other stuff, 36hp generator and fan, old bits and pieces.

Anyway here's some slightly older pics of my Blue '63 - im actually off my P's now, was on them for 3 years 馃榾

Last few weeks i've have gotten a few things done recently. Front end has had shock towers extended, upper arms bent, repainted and ready to rock. Rear end is setup

Last night was trying to get the doors off so i could drop them off at VVDS to get the hinge pins replaced with new threaded ones for the mirror (there are no threads in either existing one)

Here's some pics

Damn phillips screws got stuck, after about 44 years they rusted into their threads. at this point i swear i wanted to kill mr phillips! Lots of whacking and WD40'ing with a big no4 phillips and vice grips worked except on the LHS bottom. All four were stuck! The RHS only 2 were stuck. Damn phillips heads always round out too easily!

[Edited on 16-7-2004 by Che Castro]

Che Castro 路

this called for the drill. From the advice of others, I drilled a smallish pilot hole through the middle bit past the head

Che Castro 路

Next a big kick arse 8mm drill came in and basically sheared the whole head off of the screws. 2 down 2 to go

U can see the kill of the screw on the drill bit hehehe

[Edited on 16-7-2004 by Che Castro]

Che Castro 路

look ma no doors!

Che Castro 路

here's that plate that the screws rusted to. The A pillar is pretty solid, has some rust - needs some work. good thing i'm starting a TAFE resto course on monday.

Che Castro 路

Painted my calipers red, but i ran out of paint. doh!

phatrat 路

with these old cars..i suggest investing in an impact driver. Will make short work of those rusty screws....

Che Castro 路

its been quite a while since I last updated this.
So far i've been to japan on a shopping trip and back.

spent the last few weeks running around getting stuff together to finish off the pan so i can get the body on it. My doors have been rehinged with the threaded pins on both sides now. Before there were the non threaded type on both sides

Finally got to finish the fuel line. I used 3/8" Bundy tube, it was PBR branded stuff. Soft annealed steel tube, 10mm OD, 1mm wall thickness. Good for up to 3000PSI or something 馃檪

I put an acrylic sheath around to act as a full length grommet and to stop it rattling. The line went in front first, and took quite a few tries to bend it in the right shape so it would end up in the right place. I drilled holes in the sides and ziptied it to the side of the tunnel

[Edited on 7-11-2004 by Che Castro]

Che Castro 路

the fittings i used were 1/4" BSP brass compression fittings. These are rated to a few thousand PSI i think. They are about 8mm ID.

Che Castro 路

the stock grommets were re used but bored out to suit the tubing.

Che Castro 路

body is off. Thanks to richard alex and a few other guys who gave me some muscular help 馃檪

Che Castro 路

hey look only one hand!

i was quite suprised at how light the front end of the body is.

Che Castro 路

having the body off the pan gave me a really good opportunity to find some rust. and I found a bit of a hole at the front firewall. the previous owner did a dodgy repair. The heater channels were a bit rusty but solid and already had some repairs done to them.

Cut out most of the rust and cleaned it out a bit

Che Castro 路

made a cardboard template so i can make a repair section at TAFE tomorrow night

Che Castro 路

it's a full garage now! thanks dad!

Che Castro 路

currently also restoring a decklid that I will be grafting vents on it from a 1500 decklid, this will end up looking like a cabrio one. The donor one was a bit rusty at the bottom.

i'm drilling out the spot welds that hold the bracket bit that gives it stiffness and supports the latch

Che Castro 路

After removing the bracket bit i began to see why the early decklids always rust out at the base. it is an absolute rust trap! Possibly one of the worst details i've seen. It took them till the late 60's to change the decklid design!

Che Castro 路

got this repro judson badge from Flat4 in tokyo when i was there 馃檪

Che Castro 路

this is my goal

hopefully i should get my Boxster rims soon, and get the body on and start fitting things up!

Olsk__l

Dannyboy 路

Looking very sweet Jon ! Brave man going black , does look great though. Keep at it mate!

Dan馃槈

Che Castro 路

I really like black 馃檪 Although some parts of the prep work are pretty meh... If you look really closely on one bit or two you can spot brush marks!:blush

but thats only if you look at it real close. I bought it painted already so I can blame it on someone else:P

oval TOFU 路

two thumbs up dude! Sounds pretty easy when you read it, but I bet its quite the opposite! Keep up the good work

Che Castro 路

Ok so the body is off and I have a better look at the heater channel, looks like the previous owner did a dodgy rust repair and just got some sheet metal and plug welded over the existing one which was rooted! The plug welds were about every 6 inches which is next to useless anyway!

Che Castro 路

mainly the front area under the pillar is rooted

Che Castro 路

not so bad in the middle section

Che Castro 路

at the back its rusted out. god i hate previous owners!! grrrr

Che Castro 路

I was trying to decide whether it was worth ripping out the dodgy repair. I'm glad I did, The original heater channel floor was cut out and here it is. Pretty much rusted and brittle throughout the entire length

Che Castro 路

looks like i'm up for a heater channel fix up

Che Castro 路

The upper 3 inches of the heater channel is solid and only needed a wirebrush to get it clean on the inside, the lower inch of the heater channel sides is pitted and crap so I made some repair sections for the inner side.

Che Castro 路

now for some pretty stuff...

got some new wheels. these are OE Porsche 17" x 7 996/Boxter rims. Even got the Porsche boxes as well 馃檪

p.s. Those phonedials will probably be up for sale once I sort out these wheels

[Edited on 8-12-2004 by Che Castro]

Che Castro 路

seeing as I have been bugging myself to get a welder and that I have rust repair to do I bought myself a MIG and the first thing I made was a trolley 馃檪

Che Castro 路

another thing on the side is a decklid I've been working on. Im going to be grafting in some vents from a 1500 decklid to make it look like an OE Convertible decklid.

Che Castro 路

The base of the decklid has a few holes in it. Personally I think the drainage detail at the base of the early decklids is an absolute rust trap! Crap design. The late ones rarely rust out here. I hand beat some repair sections which will be grafted on at some stage. Started as a flat steel sheet and beat it out on a block, then slowly beat it and flattened it into shape all the whilst checking the fit from templates I took. Man this is time consuming! And my arm got very sore from beating it hours on end.

Chewy 路

Good work dude!
Whats the course you're doing at tafe?? I just finnished a Cert II in automotive but thats next to useless for bodywork, so I think I'm gonna go back and do a night course in panel beating..
Keep up the good work.

Che Castro 路

the course I'm doing is "Car Restoration" at St George TAFE. Its 3 hrs a week on monday nights. Basically u come in with your panels and you ask the tutors how to fix 'em and they show you. Great thing is that the TAFE has sheet metal folders, rollers, spot welders, TIG, swaging machines. Everything you need to fabricate panels. Its about $200 for 9 weeks worth of lessons and you can do it as many times as you want. Ive done it twice already.

Che Castro 路

The brake fluid and washer recess was a bit rusty on the underside and had a few holes messily punched in the place so i decided I would replace it.

Che Castro 路

after gathering some advice about doing the A pillar and screwing up the door alignment, I decided I would go ahead with it and brace up the section by welding members across the A and B pillar...

Che Castro 路

and from LHS A-pillar to the RHS A-pillar. Probably didnt need this one but didnt want to risk having a door that wouldnt shut properly!

Che Castro 路

The replacement A Pillar sections only have 3 holes for the hinge where pre 61 models had 4 screws that fixed each hinge to the body

Che Castro 路

so I basically pulled it apart and drilled another hole in the outside skin where the fourth hole should be, beat it into a spark plug socket with the rounded end of a broom handle :P to make it curve inwards slightly to match the other holes.

This was a Danish Steel replacement, the steel was soft and very easy to bend... A bit too easy. I guess its better than rusty steel though :blush

here it is fitted up over the existing A Pillar. Excuse the crappy welds on the cross members. Still trying to get the hang of the MIG doing Vertical fillets :P

[Edited on 8-1-2005 by Che Castro]

Che Castro 路

I was originally planning on just replaceing the heater channel floor. and the more and more I got through the A pillar and other parts, I just decided I would jump into the deep end and do the whole heater channel :blush

Managed to get one for $80 from a friend (they are usually about $270 cheapest) the only problem being that it was a Late model one and had the heater outlet between the A and B Pillars. Here's a pic of it. Kind of difficult to understand as you cant see all of it, but near the drill is where the heater outlet is. The front of it is to the right of the photo. Had to drill out the spotwelds holding the carpet clip bit too as it was late style

VDUBXTC 路

Looks like your at the same stage as us with the oval. 馃榾

Che Castro 路

nothing a day and a night of cutting welding and breathing burning paint fumes can fix! 馃槈

Had to cut off the late outlet and graft a flat piece over it. Also got the dremel out and cut out the early style heater outlet from scratch 馃檨 was a lot easier than I thought it would be! It's not exactly the same as the RHS vent, as the forward 3 louvres on the vent have a slight curve to them... but dont tell anyone!

Sprayed the inside and poured Rust kill paint inside so it ran into the flanges on the sides. Should keep rust at bay for a while to come *fingers crossed*

[Edited on 8-1-2005 by Che Castro]

VDUBXTC 路

Also, mick motors sells the heater chanels for $120 delivered.
But they have no vents at all

Che Castro 路

made an outside A pillar section and the front wheel well panel bit as well. Excuse the crappy fabrication as I dont have an anvil or a dolly or even a proper panelbeating hammer! Really need to get one...

Che Castro 路

after an afternoon of drilling out spotwelds and breaking them with a chisel I managed to rip out the rear section of the heater channel

Che Castro 路

Before I cut out the rear heater channel bit I also triangulated the other members so the B-pillar wouldnt move around without the heater channel. I also welded some strap to member above the heater channel and bolted it through where the running boards usually mount. This is so I could just bolt in the replacement to get the alignment right and hold it in place to weld it.

[Edited on 8-1-2005 by Che Castro]

Che Castro 路

heater channel there one day...

Che Castro 路

gone the next! muhahaha... to be continuted.

p.s quickly bolted up the replacement one and it fitted like a glove 馃檪 phew!

[Edited on 8-1-2005 by Che Castro]

Che Castro 路

hehe manx. Its not too much more to go *fingers crossed* Pan is waiting to be mated with the body...

I was considering doing a quick ish respray though. All the panels are dead straight, just that the paint job was done poorly, a few runs that make ripples (isnt black paint great for spotting these things 馃檪 ) bit too orange peely in some areas for my liking.

haha I had a look at the first post I made. and I called it a mini project 馃檪 I thought I would have it finished and running by december with a few thousand $$$ when i first got it.

Hehe... love how projects almost always blow out 馃榾

[Edited on 8-1-2005 by Che Castro]

VDUBXTC 路

Shit now i am starting to wonder if we will have the pacience for this type of job.
You don't want to do another one do ya? 馃榾

[Edited on 13-1-2005 by manx_xtc]

Che Castro 路

hehehe its not as I hard as I thought it might be. Although its not exactly the most fun work! Although ripping out the whole heater channel was very satisfying. I was thinking "eat that rusty scumbag!"

forgot to post the pic of the old A pillar bit and the old heater channel. Very glad I decided to rip it out. The previous repair just lapped some very thin steel (0.7mm) over the existing rust hole and bogged over it 馃檨

Jeza 路

Jon

I am truly impressed, this really is excellent work and a fantastic photo diary to boot!

I think I'll send some of the NZ guys this way to check out the heater channel replacement- many are busy looking for a better shell... and that just ain't gonna happen with the years they've got (early 70's, thin steel VW's)

What are you gooing to power it with?

Cheers

My hat goes off to you Jon for having the patience to go through with this. Well done.

GL1972 路

Jon,
I know your pain. The only way to do it is to approach it as a series of small jobs and have a lot of patience.

Nice job, well done.

Brendan

Doug Sweetman 路

Yeah, nice job !

I've done an A pillar and bottom hing mounting point before, but have never been game enough to do an entire heater channel !!!!

You've done well, and if the panel fit is good around the door, you should be really proud of yourself.

ruckus 路

top work jon

Che Castro 路

Took a deep breath and cut out the rusty bit

Che Castro 路

Here's my repair section that I have taken about 2 months to shape - a few hours every monday at TAFE.

Che Castro 路

Tack welded in. decided to do one half at a time because it would be easier to line up. Cant see it in the photo but the lip was folded and beaten over. Took absolutely ages using the shrinking and stretching heads to get it right!

Mad Manx 路

mate im in awe..... any panel with a curve in it that needs repair scares me- i think thats why I drive a buggy now- no dints, no tin worm!

Can't wait to see the end result:beer:beer

Dasdubber 路

Awesome stuff Jon - it was hard enough for me to do some minor patch sections on my decklid and get it straight again - you will be replacing the entire lower section so I take my hat off to you!!

Great stuff. :bounce

Bizarre 路

WOW

praise from Dasdubber!!

Seriously - what Jon has learned in the last couple of years is amazing

Built motors
changed heater chanels
hand makes panels

all this from a guy who wouldnt know a decent colour if it hit him in the head! :jesus:kiss

PS
Jon

Just finish it will ya!! 馃榾

Che Castro 路

This is an old pic but the other half was tack welded on

Che Castro 路

In the past month i've prepped & painted 2 test colour panels. I'm learning this at night at TAFE.

The first one I did on the left I must have mixed the paint wrong! It's like an olive colour when it is supposed to be a grey. Maybe too much yellow ochre!

The 2nd one was my first 2 pack job. Very impressed by the difference between 2pack and acrylic. That is the finish off the gun. The one on the left needed rubbing and buffing, and it isnt half as shiny!

[Edited on 2-4-2005 by Che Castro]

[Edited on 2-4-2005 by Che Castro]

Che Castro 路

Put it on the car. The decklid that I painted is a different one to the one I am repairing in the previous photos. I quite like this colour, its L469 Anthracite. I think i'll do this colour with probably a dark cherry red side panels?? I used to not really like two tones that much on beetles when it is done with white, but i quite like the grey and dark red combo

Although in the midday sun in the previous pic it looks a little too browny, I think this was because it is a slightly transparent colour and the yellow coloured primer showed through a bit. Will have to put some tinters in the primer next time

[Edited on 2-4-2005 by Che Castro]

boersch 路

looks awesome mate, go the two tone!

Che Castro 路

shit I didn't realise how lazy I am with updates, it's been almost 2 months!

Anyway, I found this thing in my driveway...

Che Castro 路

There was a fair bit of pitting in the rear corner. Not enough for a hole but enough for me to worry about.

Che Castro 路

Cut out a section of roof from behind it and welded it in. The roof curve from behind it was the perfect shape, Easy!

Che Castro 路

Ground down and filed flat.

Che Castro 路

Ok so the clip was cut out and I stepped the edge, I did something similar to Dasdubber (thanks for the tip!) to figure out where I would need to cut.

Che Castro 路

now the leap of faith.... I sat there with my angle grinder for a few minutes... after measuring it about 50 billion times. And i just did it. Damn it is a big hole!

Che Castro 路

Slowly plug welding it in to place, did one about every inch, so there was a lot!

Che Castro 路

done! well, almost. There are only a few more welds to do

[Edited on 29-5-2005 by Che Castro]

Oasis 路

Fantastic Jon.馃檪

ruckus 路

Awesome Jon!

So you did end up chopping up your roof afterall :thumb

Octa 路

Nice, you got cutting and welding down pat now.

Bizarre 路

Saw this on the weekend and it is going to be one amazing car when it is finished.

Cant believe what a perfectionist Jon has turned into!

and yes - it is scary how big that hole actually is!

It is also amazing how rigid and strong the Golde roof clips are. There is no give what so ever in that thing!

[Edited on 30-5-2005 by Bizarre]

Dasdubber 路

Once again great work John - I know the leap of faith you took when making that first cut! It took me quite a while to ensure the roof panels were "straight" around the ragtop section as the welding (despite going very slowly and cooling as I went) distorted it slightly. Its cool being able to work on the car whilst standing inside hey!

Especially front edge in front of the lip.....but with time and patience anything can be achieved as you are finding out. And it is very satisfying doing this type of major work yourself - and the more you do the better you get. Especially things like painting two pack (by the way my old 63 was anthracite!).....wait till you dabble in metallics with pearl - now that is fun (ie. tricky).

Keep it up - and more pics - people get restless round here when you make them wait too long for updates 馃槈

Che Castro 路

Hehe, ruckus to be honest I wasn't prepared to cut a hole for a Britax. It just isn't as nice as a Golde, general fit and detailing. As well as the black plastic handle and hardware as well as the headliner would look out of place in my near stock 50's interior! 馃榾 The stiffness of a Golde really impressed me (as well as Barry!) I can support my own weight on the back edge of it (although I am lightweight 馃檪 )

Yep having the hole there makes working on it so much more easy. Also having so much light into it makes it easier to see stuff without having a torch 馃檪 Actually the front lip was a good fit, where I had trouble was the rear corners. although I cut out further past the holes where the rear of the ragtop is fixed into the roof metal. The fitment wasn't quite so perfect so it'll need some work. I have actually thought about going to the late model VW colour "anthracite" which is a metallic similar to your Porsche cups (those pictures make the colour very tempting!), but I have already ordered my old school Anthracite.

[Edited on 2-6-2005 by Che Castro]

Che Castro 路

I added a brace like they had from the factory. The detail isn't quite the same, as the factory ones were spot welded to the lip of the inner curved bit. From looking at it underneath I didn't realise how many plug welds there were, I counted 140! Next time I will buy a holepunch, it took about 2 hours to drill all the holes for the plug welds!

Che Castro 路

Ok so over the last month I have stripped all the fenders and found that except for one, they were all full of bog and had all been smacked into. The worst one was definitely the front left one. It had taken a big smack and ripped through the actual sheet metal! The steel around the bolt holes had collapsed as well. There was a hairline tear right through the metal around the outer lip which I welded up and ground down - which you can see here

Che Castro 路

There was a big dent just next to the headlight, and I was trying to smack it out for hours on end, to no avail - the dent would just move around rather than go flat. My TAFE teacher told me the metal was actually stretched and we needed to shrink it with the oxy 馃檪 After about 3 or 4 shrinks in different areas and it went away! After few weeks of slapping, hammering and file finishing this is what I have now. I should have taken a before pic 馃檪 It just needs some lead over the welds - hope not to use any bog, but we'll see :p

Che Castro 路

Doing a big cleanout this weekend so I pushed the damn thing out of the garage to see it in the sun for some encouragement. Sigh. Slowly getting there...

Che Castro 路

Nother pic. I am really liking phone dials now 馃檪 Although they will have to be sold sometime in the future. That's it for now. Body is due for sandblasting in a few weeks 馃榾

Congrats mate. U know were all jealous! lol

Where abouts did u source ur information and stuff on the rag top conversion? just wondering?

Che Castro 路

I have looked at how a few others have done it, like alan (dasdubber) and other people on the net. The heater channel was probably a bit more difficult in setting out, as if it was slightly out the door might not close properly!

jvl054 路

Keep going che castro, the hard work will pay of in the end.Have you decided on what doing for the fire wall engine bay?JVLRacing馃槈

[Edited on 18/6/2005 by jvl054]

Che Castro 路

Haven't really decided. I have seen that stick on carbon fibre stuff, but it looks crap compared to the real thing. I might just go with some stainless panels and keep it simple.

Grey 57 路

Great job Jon. I have done a couple of heater channels over the years and its a big job.

Hi

Do TAFE still have the Beetle engine lid bottom as a project? I made one for an Oval I had at the time. Are you doing the journeymans course?

Steve

Nope, I think they stopped those courses a while ago - due to a lack of funding/interest. The current course I go to is "car restoration" where there is one teacher, a class of about 16 guys ranging from hotrodders, pommy car guys and me 馃檪 You bring in your own panels, work on them there, ask questions etc.

Hi

That sounds similar to what I did, you had to fail each year so that you could come back again next year. I met some really nice people, even my future next door neigbour at the course.

Steve

Hehe. I have done the course about 4 times now I think, each time you get this certificate which says you "passed" or whatever 馃檪

I got a bit lazy with updating, i didnt realise it's been a whole month 馃檪

Anyway the other night I painted my tailights + popes nose. I was stoked with the finish off the gun

I have cut my decklid and am grafting in some vents from a later '68-'70 to make it look like a cabrio. I was originally going to step the vents and spot weld it in, but I decided i'd cut it and butt weld it in with the oxy - mainly so when you look at the underside it would be completely smooth. I have just tacked one in so far

Che Castro 路

Also have been working on the bottom, using the slapper, hammer and dolly I have more or less got it good enough to use some lead filler. I just have to figure out how to attach the sliding bit for the lock now.

Che Castro 路

Fixed up this rear bit, pretty minor. Good thing I had some roof section left over from the ragtop.

Looks good! I think CT hansen had his W decklid done with front baywindow kombi vents to look factory "correct". I sprayed those bits in a booth.

Heh thanks barry. I will be going overseas for 2 months at chrissy so I have to save up! My goal is to get the thing painted before i leave 馃檪 I have been thinking of names, hmmm
