Is there any interest in having a Dyno Day in Melb like the one the NSW crew are having.
I'm keen.
Who's know of any good dyno place's

Dean, Talk to Australian VW performance and talk to Mick. Tell him what your thinking and you never know, might be a good chance to see what our motors are really putting out:o
Might scare some people though....Iv'e seen some embarrased faces walk away from there🙁
fatboy ·
I'd be happy if mine can move the rollers :thumb
Crashman ·
id would be really interested if i had my engine finished and in the car. BTW do u need special dynos for FWD?
Grey 57 ·
Thanks Stelth, I'll give Mick a call and have a chat.
Any other starters. Will aim for late January 03, assuming we get some interest.:beer

Crashman wrote:id would be really interested if i had my engine finished and in the car. BTW do u need special dynos for FWD?
No, but they do need to be strapped down properly, which is why at the last dyno day in Melbourne earlier this year, I couldn't have hoonbug tested. :-(
But if we do manage a day, I'd like to get mine tested (1.8t with 110 kW at the crank, wonder what it is at the wheels), so let's ask for a session with the appropriate equipment. :-)
Andrew
Grey 57 ·
Andrew, I'll ask about that when I call Mick. :bounce
Grey 57 ·
Just wanted to bring this one to the fornt again to see if there is more interest.
I will be away for most of the rest of Jan, so I'm thinking Feb now. Will give Mick at AVWP a call next week. :thumb
Grey 57 ·
Thought I would dive into the archives ad drag this one out again. Sounds like the Sydney one was a hoot.
How about it Melbournians. Register your interest, no good doing it with just the few we have so far. The Dyno man is going to want some numbers.
Dean
Stealth ·
I'm in.
If I can get the Notch up on to the rollers!:o
Pat ·
I'm interested, if I can turn the rollers. I wonder if the Dyno goes down into single digits.
KruizinKombi ·
I'd be happy to have a run if I had something worth running, which I haven't. 🙁
Flying VW ·
I would give it ago.
lugnuts ·
I dont think you melbourneuns will be havin a dyno day you need at least 30 people to confirm there commin so that 10 turn up.😀
Flying VW ·
And you base this conclusion on what....
Flying VW ·
vanderaj wrote:But if we do manage a day, I'd like to get mine tested (1.8t with 110 kW at the crank, wonder what it is at the wheels), so let's ask for a session with the appropriate equipment. :-)
Andrew
HAHAHA 110 kW in a modern car with a Turbo HAHAHA LOL
That's half of what my Car has.
Grey 57 ·
OK here's the deal.
Spoke to Mick from Australian VW Performance Centre in Croydon today and he was most helpful.
The Dyno is a Dyno Dynamics machine.
Not sure what was used in Sydney but if it was the same type then the results could be roughly compared.
Mick will also hook up the diagnostics machine ( line up the tail pipe) to see how the car is running under load.
Looking at about 30mins per car.
Two runs - Warm Up and Power Run
Mick will try to organise another set of rollers for the NB's & Golfs with FWD.
Cost for the Dyno & Mick for the day is $600. Not bad for place, man and machine for a full day.
Earliest we can get in is the middle of March.
Ideal numbers for the day is 15 to 20. This will bring the cost per head down to $30 to $40.
So we need to get some firm numbers happening.
Probably need to get the money to Mick before the day too. Think the fairest thing is to pay before the day. This way the cost is not blown out for those who turn up.
Give us some feedback on who should collect the money.
But most of all put ya hand up to come along.
Should be a lot of fun.
I for one am looking forward to find out how much tire shredding power the 1600SP is producing. Gotta beat Che's score.
Flying VW ·
Put me down for 3 car's
Grey 57 ·
Oh almost forgot, how does Saturday the 22nd of March suit everyone. It looks like the only clear weekend.
We have the Melb GP on the 9th of March and the Kennet River trip on the 15th / 16th.
If thats OK I'll pencil the date in with Mick at AVWPC.
Flying VW, I maybe should have said the cost per car will be $30 to $40 if we get the numbers. That OK.
I have also been thinking that we need to have a firm minimum of say 15 cars , payed up to proceed. That is confirm the day and pay the money to AVWPC.
If it all falls over, who ever has payed will get the money refunded. OK.
One more thing, is we need to cut it off at about 20 cars to ensure that we have enough time to get every one thru.

Hi guys,
Have just had my kombi sorted out by some EFI guys and it is now running like a dream, so I will be their on the day with bells on! (Where/who do I pay?)
So when and where is the Dyno day happening.......I need to put it on my calander for events not to miss out on!
The other point is, "What VW meeting is happening on the evening of the 18 Feb 03?", I wouldn't mind comming along and having a look...only been in the state for 2 weeks..........
And last but not least, has anyone thought of getting a mobile dyno guy to go along to the VW meet in March?
Would be good; something for the crowd to look at, good for the guys that can't make it on the day and, "can sort out the talkers from the walkers!" 😀
Cheers

It was a great day and I learnt a bit more. Hey, interesting stuff.
Good that Bel went up as we found the manifold we put on the night before had leaking seals dispite new rings and gaskets being put on. She was sucking a lot of air in and freezing up.
It was good that it was so easily identified. Mick squirted some water around to show it being sucked in.
Bad news is that her engine will need to be pulled apart again to get manifold right🙁
Hmmm, can see why they changed the manifold set up on later engines:jesus
Dougie thank you:kiss
Dr L went well. he loved it😎 Then he got to lug an old 36hp around that OMrSlinky brought over for Bel.

Yeah its quite interesting - seems just under 40 ponies at the wheels is about stock for a 1600.
I am pretty happy with my 61 ponies out of the 1776.
So far i guess Keith H is the winner with 119 HP and i think Jak just squeezes in second.
What it is saying is these 100HP 1776 that the Americans have ....... well they must have "different" dyno's. I think there is a big enough selection here to show that 100 ponies at the wheels is NOT something that is achieved easily.
Anyway my aim next is 70HP. Hoping to do that with a set of 1.4's and a bit of jetting.
The following year probally a new set of 044's and hopefully 80.
Good show one and all! :sandrine

PLEASE dont take this the wrong way - 67HP out of a 2010?
Fuel injection not working ?
What heads?
or is it a real stump puller?
Pat ·
Dean, my car actually has 18hp, 20hp was without the aircleaner.
It was only making 14hp before Dan played with the timing. That's about a 20% power increase!!
Although I still reckon it would go better with 18 real horses strapped to the front.
Bizarre ·
ok - some one moved jak's post and made me look like a goose 🙁
It WAS NOT THERE before - it was in the other post. That is why i copied it.

[Edited on 25-3-2003 by blue74l]
kombiluva ·
G'day Blue74l,
No offence taken.
In ref to your question, I neeed to have the F9A re tuned as it is leaning out above the 4000rpm mark. (Killed the TPS the other month and need to re tune the top end) The cam it is running is a only mild......makes the Hp/Torque in the 3000>5500 range. (E? grind.)
From the Dyno print out sheet it seems that I am making just under 500nm at 90klm, this was done in 3rd gear at about 4200 rpm. However I can assure you/everyone that it is a pleasure to drive in the current set up.......even if it needs a little more of a tune up.
FYI running a 71mm CW crank, heads have had a little head work and that is about it. I was informed from the guy I bought it off 2 years ago that it is a 1973?? CC motor.
Is it a stump puller.......oh yeh....very nice....does me fine!
Cheers
Mick
Grey 57 ·
Pat, I only put down the best reading.
On a number of cars removal of the oil bath air cleaner upped the HP by about 2HP. This was the case with mine and Golde60 and I think Colin.
Amazing to think that simply cleaning the air cleaner you could gain another 10%HP in a 36horse.
Just a note on torque. The print out was in foot pounds (imperial) My oval was producing 350 to 400 ft lbs at 70 to 75 kph, of torque and was the one of highest of all the tests I saw. (1600/1500's)
However it was only due to the low geared 1200 gear box in my car.
jakriz ·
Sorry Barry , that was me, I posted it on the other post ,saw this one, posted it here, then erased the other one, meanwhile u were doing the same.
I'm going for over 100hp @ the wheels as the new 2026cc goes back togther this weekend, as well as my rear disks & my new 17 inch wheels, going to be a long weekend.
Jak
Che Castro ·
hey so grey 57 was ur 38hp without the aircleaner ??
Grey 57 ·
Errrr yes.
Was hoping to slip that one past the keeper.
But thanks to Pat the jigs up.
With aircleaner it was 36 ground pounding, dyno destroying HP.
fatboy ·
Ahem,
Can I just point out that Wombat was 53hp at the wheels WITH the air cleaner!
I also claim the price for the biggest increase of the day an additional 28hp after Mick tinkered with my accelerator !
The accerator fix was made permanent today at a whopping cost of $150 ! which is about $5 per horse!
You wouldn't believe how much difference an extra 28 nags makes ! (actually you probably would)
Yeah mate thats OK. Just wanted to beat Che Castros figure is all. Or at least be close.
Well Vics it looks like we need to get modifying/tuning if we are going to top the NSW results.
What about some Dyno action from Qld , SA & WA.:P
Flying VW ·
My 1600 lost 5 H.P when the air cleaner was taken off, it's a paper filter.
lugnuts ·
And so the HP war begins, the cards are on the table, everyone knows what the other guys or girls got, have fun people.:P

Lugnuts we are going to work on Bel's manifold🙂 should get another couple of hp out of her then next dyno day:thumb
She is an old 36hp, I'm not out for power just keeping her stock to prove they can still last. Hey, it keeps the speeding fines down😀
Che Castro ·
hehehe i know the truth now!
well my 1600 SP has a non stock cam in it, a V-Force AP2, slightly more duration than stock. My 39 was with full exhaust and a modified 1300 aircleaner
Grey 57 ·
Ahah, and the truth shall set you free. (classic line from Lair Lair)
In absolute truth mine has a different cam too. Apparently a 356 Super 90 cam or grind profile??. Obviously not worth the money if you look at the HP produced.
First order of business for mine is
- Better air cleaner
- Put the extractors back on.
jenz58 ·
Just wait for Bel's next go, oil filled air cleaner and all😀:bounce
At least we found out quick what the problem was and I hadn't driven her far, so it was quick diagnostics and a learning curve.
KruizinKombi ·
I wish I had a car to put my 1600TP in. It also had a 'mild' cam, and I'd be interested to find how it compares. Maybe I'll throw it in the bug!!! 😀 (Heather would not be amused :o)
Stealth ·
I was pretty happy with my 35 HP being a $600 dollar dunger...........cool😀
Che Castro ·
lol we're competing over 1hp 🙂
jenz58 ·
Well I guess if you are sitting at the lower end of the scale every 1 horsepower counts😀:sandrine
Think we were more interested in seeing how our rides were going, what we can work on:thumb
It was a fun day and interesting
Flying VW ·
I know what you mean Stealth that car i used to race has only cost me $1000, and it was performing well on the track and on the Dyno.
KruizinKombi ·
I picked up an extra 4hp with the air cleaner on, and I've been amazed by how much difference it makes on the road. :thumb
I am going to lose a little when I retard the timing a degree or two though. It's fine for 'normal' driving, but Heather tends not to shift down when I think she should, and as a result it starts to ping a little. I'll wait until I've finished driving it though. 😀
amazer ·
:o you guys were serious. taking air cleaners off etc. And I thought "washing" an intercooler on the audi was cheating!
you didnt take the kombi kol? how am I gonna know how many extra neddies Ive got.
I wouldnt worry about the power fig from the 2010. After all its only 40cc's bigger than stock.
I'm starting to think about putting my other motor back in my kombi for nambucca. Its very troubling. Do I go for outright raleigh glory or the non existant kombi trophy. Dont know that I can afford to get my trailer up and running so might be the only way to go.
I think 20hp or thereabouts is SO kewel. Bet they dont get too many readings like that on their dyno.
So does that mean I've got the most powerful VW powered kombi in australia still? I certainly hope not. Cmon people!
KruizinKombi ·
I am SO glad I didn't take the kombi!!!
Chris, you topped the horsepower ratings by 1 Hp (for a kombi), but I'm betting your kombi doesn't make the same torque as the 68 Hp bus did.
Toybug's 2L motor came from a paddock, which explains why it didn't make the same kind of power as Steve's 1700.
Hopefully next time we have a Melbourne Dyno Day, I'll be in the kombi, although the way things are looking, it may well be a 2L by then. 🙂
amazer ·
I doubt it too. But then nobody cares about torque do they. just ask any marketing guy. :P I'm happy to lose out with this motor. Its good enough for the moment but not exactly spectacular. Spac-tacular more like. Anyone got a subaru water pump? mine has died.
KruizinKombi ·
On the contrary, torque is the ONLY thing I'm interested in. 🙂
kombiluva ·
What is the old saying! All torque and no action! Who cares about all these figures!
Just nice to have a get together and see what type of ponies/torque is being pumped out by vehicles that have a lot of milage under their tyres! Good to see the comparison form factory specs to now!
All the best,
Mick
OvalGlen ·
Fat Boy , why did an adjustment to the accelerator cable cost $150 ????
70AutoStik ·
A liitle fact - Max HP figures are great for impressing teenage boys, but toque is what accelerates a car.
These figures are great for streetable engines, but if we were to start to look at the wilder side torque figures would be much more impressive (within reason - you've always got to look at where the torque is made: a workmate has some torque figures for his WRX [properly documented,] that would boggle your mind - he actually had a better turbo fitted after they were explained to him.)
Sick68VW ·
hey guys at the moment i am bulidings
my 1776 witch the guy buliding it said
i have the oppition to run 48ida's
and if i do so i will run a 14.8 with about 86 hp@wheels this is achevied by counter weighted crank,fully balnened,grafite coated pistons,enagle 125 cam,straight cut cam gears,puter lifters,berg double vavle springs ,38 inlet ,stock exaust,1/12
turned extrotors, cromoloy pushrods,8 dowlled fly wheel
not trying to show off just want to compare:bounce
fatboy ·
Ovalglen, they actually replaced the pedal assembly and spent about 3 hours mucking about with the cable run.
jenz58 ·
Dougie spent all of yesterday fixing Bel's inlet manifold and getting things right on her 36hp engine. He's found it a learning curve, never worked on the old manifolds before. Well he's very much into modifying so the whole thing was a bit of a new experience, keeping something stock🙂:o:kiss

Slik68...
Here's a comparo for you....
My little 1776 is as follows...
Demello 69 CW Crank. 9lbs FW. Stock clutch. Stock matched rods. CIMA?/MAHLE 90.5 P&C's. Engle 120 Cam (No straight cuts!). Balanced from Clutch to pulley & piston to piston. Shimo Mod 044 heads (40x35.5 I think!) Semi hemi'ed with WBX size exhaust ports & LARGE intakes matched to manifolds. Dual 40mm Dells. Phoenix merged extractor with a FORD Falcon resonator under the right guard. BERG Pulley (stock dia). Home brewed valve train with BERG adjusters. And a BERG sump & Full Flow pump. OBERG filter.....We built this little donk back in '94 and she's still doing fine. The best my bug has run is a 14.8 with a standard (TIII) transaxle (consitent low 15's still!). I have travelled across OZ 3 times, raced in classic rally's, sprints, hillclimbs and autocana's too....Never dyno'ed it, but I reckon it must be close to 100hp at the flywheel. This old girl hasn't let me done yet!
