Grey 57 ·

Hang in there lil dub. I feel your pain.
My New Years resolution was the same. But 25yrs smoking habit to break. its hard. but stick with it for all the reasons you stated above.

jenz58 ·

Good Luck!! 🙂

......... and well done!!! 26 hours!!!!! You can do it....😎

I'm like Grey.....tried a few times...but others have done it ...Gotta really want to...Be determined!!!! So they tell me...

vern74 ·

Go for it !
I stopped on Mothers day !
its tough but the wallet loves the rest it gets now.......no more constant opening.
Kids have stopped whinging !

Keep it up ....they say it gets easier

lulu94 ·

Good luck, i did it about 8 months ago, mainly coz i couldnt be bothered putting up with ryan having a go at me every time i had one.

it will be hard for a few months but if ya stick to it and find distractions it weill be easier i found i kept craving for months and someone told me that it wont stop till after a year. but here i am now and i have pretty much stopped craving and hardly think about it anymore.

As i said good luck, you will feel better for it in the end.

BTW has anyone here who has quit really noticed a difference in there budget, i seem to have transfered what i was saving onto other things and not sure what
my beetle maybe :P

Danielle

pod ·

being a reformed smoker for nearly14yrs its hard ,still sometimes would like a puff, mainly when drinking alcoholic beverages, but going cold turkey is the hardest part keep up with it and kick the nicotine habit🙂

PurpleT3 ·

Good luck lil dub. I quit 8months, 3 weeks , 2 days, 17hours, 43 minutes ago. Best thing I ever did. One thing I have noticed is how bad smokers smell. Never believed the non-smokers while I was smoking, but smokers do smell really bad.

Are you using any nicotine replacements like patches or gum? The patches were a big help to me, but the bottom line is will power, you've got to want to quit.

No difference in budget, bought a new computer. Figured the repayments were equal to what tobacco cost and if I was paying off the computer I couldn't afford to take it up again.

moonlite6t6beetle ·

go man.... your doing yourself and the world a favour, more people should have the attitude you do.

lugnuts ·

My ex is a smoker, one day when i was leaving to go i gave her a kiss and vomited luckily it was outside :thumb

lilly ·

go girl, you can make it,! your lungs and arterys will love you longer for it, he he and you'll have more money to spend on the important things in life, like VWs!!!!!!lol
heard the patches are great help,
from Stef, Blue Bus (Ricks) better half, ha ha 😉:P:P:P:P

lobus ·

I reckon we should have a separate forum for support of pple giving up the demon weed. It was the hardest thing i ever did; but probably the most satisfying. 7 years now. At about $??? god knows how much a packet that means my lo red vice out there in the driveway is paid for several times over... and it doesn't fuck up my lungs , heart, vision, yadda yadda ...
keep it up lil dub it is beatable...

Desert Moose ·

Good onya and the best of luck !!!!!!!!!!!!

It’s been a little over twelve months for me!
I used nb patches 2weeks big, 2week medium and 1week small. Not a lot has changed apart from the cash in my pocket the fact that I will live to spend it and how much people that smoke stink........lol
:P

silver ·

Just remember you are not giving up,
You are gaining!

byronbus ·

You go girl...In the words of the water boy "you can do it"

My uncle died of lung cancer on Wednesday, 53...left behind a wife and 3 kids, if only he'd given up smoking 10 years ago, he would have lived at least another 10 years...and he had a VW, what a waste...

vwombat ·

Don't be like those people who start stuffing food in their mouths as a replacement, and then go back to the ciggies as a dietary measure.
You can do it! Thor for PM!

buzzbug ·

http://www.quit.org.au/index2.html

have a look here if you need any help dude.

Keep it up and stay strong, it will be the best thing that you will do for you and your body.

And trust me! others will love you for it too. :thumb

StenGuns ·

I gave up last Monday and started running with a club the same day.. 5:15am runs three times a week. Some gym work. Diet. No Alcohol for 8 weeks.. I sneaked a couple of fags at the rugby yesterday and had two ciders.. I feel totally pissed with myself this morning.. Willpower is vital.. can't do it without it.. My motivation is bloody strong.. (Two sons).. But that freakin will power!.. One drink and I give up!.. Christ I'm pissed off

buzzbug ·

Stick with it Sten!

no grog for 8 weeks is pretty tough.

but at least you are doing exercise and that is going to be one of the greatest benifits to you.

Dannyboy ·

I still smoke and have gone from 20 a day down to 1-2 on the evening . I have made my unit a non smoking place and also do not go to smokey pubs anymore. I also keep myself as busy as possible which helps.I still wish i could knock the odd few i do have on the head though. They stink , are anti-social , are killing me and wasting my money.
It's crazy as i exercise , gym , go mountainbiking , watch what i eat etc but still can't let go! Maybe a few years ago it may have been cool to smoke but times change and smokers are waking up to themselves.
You stick with it and to support you i'm going to get some patches and try and shake my dirty filthy habit!
Apart from the health reasons etc etc just look at the money side of it! Say $8 a day for a packet x 7 =$56 x 4 = $124 x 12 = $1488 a year!!!!!!!!! Thats alot towards rego , parts , holidays , clothes whatever!

It's hard to do but stick with it!!

Dan

🙂🙂🙂

luvmybug ·

good for you.
Im a smoker and i want to give up but its the first day that i dread. Im usually grumpy and non talkative.

Good luck 😀

:cry ok so now I am a smelly stinky povvo outcast, as well as a gibberish talking looser! Go thorun, u can do it! I had stopped for nearly a yr, then picked it up again. But after reading this, combined with driving thru a big healthy cycling convention, or watever they were all doing at laidley this morning.... cyclists everywhere.... I felt bad as i know I get puffed just changing gears in my car.lol....and realising I really do stink.... i think tis about time I get myself back on track... only cold turkey did not work for me last time, so I will prob start the gum next week...(costs just as much as ciggies..lol..)...I also found that like a big fat cigar smokin whiskey drinking bum, I really do enjoy one whilst drinking... so will have to cut back on that.... mannnnn... foods bad...drinkings bad....smokings bad......what's left?....lol.. but go thorun go! (is ur bf a non smoker?).......

ducky ·

c'mon homebrand join the revolution. Go guys and gals you will be a much happier person for giving it up

$2.63 homebrand baja ·

😉 switched from rollies to 1mg ciggies, I am starting the process... but hooray for thorun, I am relying on you for inspiration, therfore u must succeed! 😎

ducky ·

a step in the right direction.

lil dub ·

holy shit!!!!!!!!!!
its nearly been a week!!!!!!!

AND NOT A MOMENT HAS GONE BY WITHOUT ME THINKING OF CIGARETTES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! hahahahahah.

sad, but true. you know how they say guys think about sex every 5 seconds or something - or 10 billion times a day or something like that?
well. that is me --- but only i think about CIGARETTES!!!!!!!!
argh! everything reminds me of cigarettes.....and at any given moment........ i would be up for a smoke!!!

sigh. but i have been strong (only have had 2 half smokes....late at night.....out in the cold....while the household was sleeping ----- and yes it made me feel dirty...!!!!)

but - wow ---- thanks for the support guys ---- i only checked this post today................!
and yeah --- i have the PATCHES.....the patches sent to me from HEAVAN!!!!! if you are trying to quit......go the nicotine replacement! it is sooooo much better ( i have tried and failed before - but with the patches life is a lot easier...and you get kooky dreams too!)

so thanks for the support.....thanks heaps...................it is still really painful...........and i have been weirdly "emotional" (not cranky though thankgod.....just really teary....weird)

iin the words of my best mate Erin (also a new non-smoker, so kinda my support buddy even though she is in melbourne)
"I MISS IT WITH EVERY FIBRE OF MY BEING!!!!!"
hehehe.
but they reckon it gets better.....................eventually..............!

thanks again --- and heather --- if you need me to kick your arse into gear i am more than happy to oblige.............!!!!!!

thor xx

Anthiron ·

yay thor!!!! keep it up!:thumb

ducky ·

keep up the good work it will pass

Bizarre ·

keep it up

You will enjoy it.

If you really want to be encouraged - go and kiss a smoker now!

Amazing how much you can taste the difference (sorry smokers - but fact!)

Sad part is - i gave up 20 years ago. Still think about it. Especially sitting round a camp fire late at night.

Every couple years i give in when i have had 15 too many.
Yeah - HATE myself in the morning

Kepp it up. It does get easier

VolksFolks ·

Hey Thor, me stopped today after a lot of pushing and shoving from the other half, got patches on and have a nicotine inhaler, works ok but still not like a SMOKE, i have carfully read the post and had some inspired thoughts form others, byron bus, so sorry to here about your uncle, my step father died 6 years ago from the dreaded LC, but i still smoked and loved it, but this time is different, may need some support over the next week or so, so good on ya for keeping it up, maybe take up fisting for a hobbie, thanks for listenin

Andy

day number 2 has begun.......... chatterchatter

Andy

CoopGirl ·

I wish my other half would stop smoking. As soon as I fell pregnant with our first child, smoking became so repulsive to me I quiet straight away. Once I had him, we went out for a drink and I started up again. That didn't last long as I fell pregnant again 2 months later and again smoking went out the door, well for me anyway.
I can't stand the smell or the taste.

Good one guys for giving smoking the boot. It is becoming such a socially unacceptable thing.

Keep up the good work!!

lil dub ·

good on ya!!!! am so glad to hear i am not suffering alone eheheh!!!!
hmmm... day 2! its but a distant memory now.......I STILL WANT A CIGARETTE....but it is no where near as bad as it was then. those first 5 days or so were the weirdest........
i have to confess..... i have had a few "half smokes" but they give me no joy or satisfaction..........so i know i am in for the long haul.

i dont know, some days i feel so inspired about it ---- it makes me feel so glad to realise i am finally doing it, i have finally quit! and i am realising just how afraid i was before. how afraid i was of "failing", how i didn't hink i would cope, how i would be destined to die a painful death and no one would have sympathy for me cause i SMOKED. shit. and i really think i believed i might go crazy from not being able to smoke - sounds weird i know, but that i might get in a stressful situation, or be awkard and embaressed, and NEED a smoke....and myabe go MAD by not being able to have one. i dunno, sounds weird i nkow, but smoking is such an emotional thing for me.....such a "crutch" of support, when i am stressed, or sad, or feeling awkard in a social situation..........etc etc.
after the first couple of days i realised that i could live without the post-dinner smoke, the coffee and cigarette routine, the cigarette while onthe phone, the smoke on the drive to uni etc etc. these rountines were not so hard to break.....it was more the fear of "what happens if i get stressed???" how am i going to get thourhg exams without cigarettes ??? argh! etc etc.
its hard to describe. and its great to hve support, from all people, smokers and non-smokers alike, but i think if you have never smoked yourself...you just don't know how strange it is, to crave this thing you know is bad for you, the mixture of guilt and stuff....... its horrible! and i have tried to describe it to non-smoker friends................and its almost impposbile to be relate it to anything else. maybe unless you have been a drug user or something, i dont know.

anway.....good luck andy!!!!!!!!!! i feel your pain, seriously, but its been almost 2 weeks now and it does get better - i mean, it feels better than it did those first few days...... but by all accounts, from reformed smokers, it almost never quite goes away. even my doctor, who gave up smoking 20 years ago, reckons there are times when he wishes for a smoke. sigh. oh well!!!!!

good luck!!!!!!!!!!!! and thanks to everyone for the support!

thor xx

ps. do we need to start a "fishing annon" group?? heheh. i forgot about that..............

supercab ·

lil dub, just remeber all you have gone thru since you stopped smoking, and think how it will all be for nothing if you take it up again.

The cravings will get less and less, believe me. Stick with it!

penguin ·

Thorun (or Icelandic viking warrior princess... whichever is easier to spell :P)
tell you what, you tell me in two weeks from today how many ciggies you have had since now, (Fags are different, you are a consenting adult and what you get up to in your own time is entirely personal:P just as we don't ask about your "fishing" habits anymore :P ), and I'll do something for you.
I have no doubt you'll do this, give up the smokes that is, particularly with all the folk here pushing (and that goes for everyone else who is trying) you along the way.
signed,
the other fish loving person here

PS we don't think about it 10 billion times a day, or every 5 seconds.................................. we actually have an entire section of our brain just dedicated to it so it never actually turns off :P:P:P:P:P

Andy

lil dub ·

so today is my one month aniversary!!!!

HOORARY!!!!!!!!

i still think about it as much as ever....but dont LONG for it as much as before...........
now its kinda of like an old friedn, that i miss very much, but know now is just a f**kwit who betrayed me, so even if i THINK i miss it sometimes, i know that actually i am better off
does that make any sense??? no.......
well. I AM STIULL A NON-SMOKER (despite what drew thinks heheheh....yes i bum one occassionally....but come on...its got to be better than 20 a day!!!)

thanks for all the support everyone -- you are awesome --- if only you were here to see me turn into a cranky bitching ugly nicotine deprived weirdo ...which happens aboput once a day or so.....

i have so much ANGST inside myself... where did this come from???????
was i putting it into my cigarettes?????
why am i so pissed all the time at the slightest thing???
argh???
anyway -- before this turns into a THERAPY session (or before i start talking about fishing, poo jokes and spewing ) i will stop, and just say i have been kinda cranky and it really surprises me.....

what else? hope you are all going well ------ andy...hang in there - i quit over the flu as well and it helped heaps...
and as for personal trainers...my came from the same nazi-school-of-aerobics-oz-style training....last week....as i struggled in REAL pain over the stepper thingo.....the little shit-head had the guts to tell me "come on...keep going...only 50 seconds...you can do it....think of those old smokers lungs of yours working away.....: surely the man must know that i am virtually homicidal and so close to killing someone, anyone, who annoys me let alone tortures me with cardio workouts...........

anyway =-- thats the end of my epic....
soon it will be 6 months...........
then one year.......
and then just a distant memory.......the occasional lung cancer paranoia.......but hopefully i will be free of this painful sadness that i feel when i come out of a lecture and see someone else lighting up ...............i am the ultimate passive smoker........the smell....ahhhhh.
but there is no weakness - am a non smoker now yay 😀
