Anthiron ·

hey i remember that post now......such a shame but its good to know that you arent giving up on it:bounce

barls ·

yeah i mean i have 5 years invested in it and its worth it🙂

barls ·

happy days are here again, cause i may have found me a body not just any body but one thats has only a few months difference between them, but im not saying too much at the moment cause they may change there mind on what to do with it😀😀😀😀😀

barls ·

ringing tomorrow about a body, so the bug may be on the road again within the year

paulgrey ·

man... how did you manage that, I know that it must hurt seeing your pride and joy squashed but that is some what impressive

barls ·

blacked out on the freeway out of sydney doing 80km and flipped on it side then hit the guard rail. but walked away with two bruises.

paulgrey ·

It is good to hear that you were not hurt, how are the repairs going?.

barls ·

looking at a new body shortly maybe monday or next weekend.

ikube ·

VW = Safe
Jap Cars = risk ...

That dub has a Tough shell~ good to see ur not hurt !

barls ·

it was more the inertia belts i had but the shell protected me. god i miss it now, but give me a few months and it will be back in all its glory. and now that im posted to a shore base ill have more time to enjoy it and shows.

ikube ·

Good luck & all the best !

Che Castro ·

Oooh nasty crash. good to see you're not giving up 🙂

These pics are convincing me more to get a roll cage.

I think i'd prefer to be in a jap car if i had to crash! 🙂

barls ·

Che Castro wrote:Oooh nasty crash. good to see you're not giving up 🙂

if i was in another one, pray to god it doesnt happen, id prefer to be in a bug thats straight, rust free in the turret and has inertia belts but thats just me. i like my steel to be thicker than it is in newer cars.

barls ·

i got me a body :bounce:bounce i got me a body :party:party:party now to strip it back and respray it, then rebuild.

Che Castro ·

yeah jap cars have thin steel, i meant like a late model jap car

My first reaction to that pic was that a telegraph pole fell onto the roof or something. it looks brutal!

Stanley ·

congrats on the body...but jesus that smash looked bad.....:jesus

barls ·

thanks guys i know how lucky i am

barls ·

just got me body and its a 72 sbug 15 million it has a little bit of rust but it fell in to my hand. so it will be running before the end of year. a rebirth in progress, pics to come

jenz58 ·

Hey barls good news!! Congrats :thumb

Lot's of pics now of the new project please 😎

Thought I'd already posted here..but not...Ouch about your old ride...hope you didn't get too hurt in it...

It's looks a good project for a chopped top 🙂

...guess with all the work ahead of you you won't be making member of the day so often 😉

p.s. sorry went back and looked at the pics...forget the chop top..do you have any salvagable panels on the old one 🙁

How many times did it roll? :jesus

[Edited on 30-7-2004 by jenz58]

Valura ·

I am so glad that you walked away from that!! impressive pics matey. Congrats on the new body!!!
Good luck with everything...its so good to see that you havent given up... I blacked out on the freeway once, and almost hit the barrier... glad to have a mate there who woke me up... :kiss

duncombemu ·

Narsty looking smash. Glad you're OK.
You said you 'blacked out'. I bet you 'came to' pretty quick.
Regards,
Mark😀

barls wrote:just got me body and its a 72 sbug 15 million it has a little bit of rust but it fell in to my hand. so it will be running before the end of year. a rebirth in progress, pics to come
i got it wrong about the body i did get one but it isnt a 15 million that one is being restored by my old man and flogged off. but it is to be rebuilt. most of the car is straight from the dash down.

paulgrey ·

Hey Barls,

Good luck, are you doing the whole german look thing, de-chromed and shaved?.

I reckon that you kind of have to with a super beetle, it would be a shame to have all that strut suppension go to waste.

barls ·

im not going the whole hog but there will be some mods

barls ·

ive decided on cal look rubbers, saas steering wheel, sport seats out of ether a pulsar or lancer( yet to be decided), stock box with reinforcing straps around it, empi trigger shifter and my kenwood head unit and 6 stacker, 2 6" 3 ways in the front and 2 6x9s in the back.

jenz58 ·

Dr L has an old saas steering wheel...I love it...

It was on him and is staying...but I have been told it might be part of his wiring problems...Apparently Type 3's don't like sports steering wheels...Do you know anything about it

Are you looking for one?

barls ·

no ive still got one from beast, but i may have to replace it if i bent it when i head butted it in the crash. i can not see why it would cause a problem cause the only thing connected to the boss is the horn and its one wire. its does not make sense to this technician.

barls ·

heres a mock up of what it will look like when i finish

andrewh ·

Looks good.

How did you mock that picture up?

rocknrob ·

How are you planning on getting the front that low?

barls ·

by lowering the struts 1 to 2" and found a website off one of the early threads on this site. cant remember what it was called though

barls ·

http://www.busselecta.com/ this is the site

andrewh ·

Cheers

barls ·

not a problem it just took a bit of searching

barls ·

the new body arrives on wednesday so in a few weeks ill take some time off and start some work on it

barls ·

got a body it wasnt the one that i was after cause it wasnt 100% to the standard i wanted as i was told but i have one with a little rust as is. here it is

work starts on it on the 13th of sept

~air fooled~ ·

looks good man!! good luck!!!

barls ·

thanks mate ill definately post some pics when i can but they will be after the fact cause i have no internet access at taree and dial up sucks. not only is it almost the same month but its a 15th million body with its plate and all

[Edited on 26-8-2004 by barls]

barls ·

it has begun the rust work has been started and i go up there in a week to start striping it for the respray

Cam ·

Man, can you say lucky - right down the middle :o Thats an impressive hit... As for the jap/modern car and thin steel argument. :blah The grade of steel purification, weight and tensile strength has progressed on par with computer technology. And although it's alot thinner nowadays, the strength, resistance to tearing (and rotting for that matter), puncturing, stretching and so on is far less than far thicker equvelants from many years ago.:blah

[Edited on 6-9-2004 by Cam]

barls ·

yeah im lucky but my lottery ticket didnt win

barls ·

people the time of the rebirth of chaos is nearly upon us ie it starts in the next two weeks so ill be gone as of monday for two weeks

barls ·

here is the one i wrought off now after the two weeks of work there is not much left on the body and its now minus the roof

and heres the new body that we are repairing the rust in before it goes to the pannel beaters to be sprayed

barls ·

the rust should be finished in another couple of weeks and then back to the pannel beaters. the seats have been located at boris' picnic day and the whole thing is go.

Anthiron ·

looks like its coming together for you barls😎

barls ·

yeah its about time but hopefully ill have it running by christmas

barls ·

im running a little behind schedule now but it should be done by christmas but thats depending on the upholster. the rust is almost done now apart from the small section that was found in the left turret after the right turret had been done, i now have a set of pop outs as well thanks Ali(aka primate) so now i only have to source the last few items and im done as ill have every item i require 🙂

paulgrey ·

Gidday Barls,

good to hear that the project is coming along, go hard for christmas... just think summer cruzing.

VWFREAK ·

Go hard Barls, going by the pics, I would have just wrecked the cars and bought a new toy.

Top effort, good luck with the xmas dead line.

barls ·

thanks guys i may have some more pics this weekend but if not the next time i go up there it will be on, as i start my christmas leave on the 6th of december cause ive got soooo much leave. hell i may even take a week in november yet

Desert Moose ·

OOHH come on your takin' your time aren't you :P

barls ·

im allowed to arent i

Desert Moose ·

X-mass is not that far away......LoL

No take ya time make it worth doing, It will be better in the lng run......Iwas only digin' at how fast you were going with it. you have done so much in no time at all (because the car is so far away from you) mine is in the back shed and you have done more then me of late...............lol

barls ·

yes that would be one of the reasons why its soo far in to it mate the other is the week off i took

barls ·

slowly slowly its coming together heres some more pics. front right guard

passager front guard

repair left rear

drivers side heater channel

drivers side sill repair

drivers side heater channel again

right and left rear turrets

barls ·

yes i am, so ill have him back on the road soon as im missing

barls ·

went parts shopping today got chaos his christmas present. all these goodies

hey astro or any one else from the hastings vw club, do you recognise the blue sbug im using as a donor body?

barls ·

just back from an intense 3 day session and its looking good but unfortunately my laptop is having a disagreement with itself and is on a little holidya so no pics uploading unfortunately till i get it back as im on my little brothers computer.

barls ·

ive now got the laptop working again so here are some updated pics.
the right sill after repair

the right front guard

the right rear guard

the left front guard

the right rear turret

the right hand heater channel repair

the left rear turret

the left quarter

with the body and pan separated before the swap

the rear of the body

pulling the engine out of the other one to make the body swap easier

the old body minus pan

us changing the body over the old pan is out and now moving the new pan in

the old pan before the damaged body went back on it

the body has been changed and the pan has been scraped back to make sure its rust free. the new pan sitting under the body

the engine is now in the stand awaiting a rebuild with a new exhaust system to be built to allow it to breath better not that there was a problem with the old system just that im thinking two tail pipes running out the stock cutouts. i might even redo the fan housing and the covers on the heater boxes as well while we are at it. just to make it look neater. might even have to move the oil filler due to the alternator going in as well so watch this space

my tuck away exhaust

penguin ·

Thank god I looked at this from work.

Damn, thats a lot of work and a good result so far for it!

barls ·

yeah it was a lot of work but it will be worth it.

pete wood ·

go barls go! it'll be back on the road before long!

in the owrds of a very bad 80's son "don't stop til you get enuf" or maybe get it done. :thumb

barls ·

yeah and after new years ill be going up for an intensive 2 week work period on it so it will be there soon

barls ·

got a little closer to having it painted. most of it is now sanded back in prep for painting and the new pan seal has been installed.
here some of it being installed

and after it was installed

the front shocks installed

found this while sanding back damn rust, some one before had filled it from the inside of the car with bog

with the heater fans installed and wired up

heres the guard that i cracked in the crash before the repair

after the first layer of glass

after the repair

preping the body. i started on the bonnet

just a few stone chips and paint layers

just before its final sanding

the doors got the same treatment

the roof was next it had rust spots in the paint so it coped a floggin to be sure

some stoneguard was sprayed under the guards on the body to deaden the road noise

every thing was then bolted back on the car to save my old man some space in his work shop

and just to round it out heres one more of my engine from a different angle
if any one is after those lovely leopard door trims for a kombi contact me

Newer cars are designed to crumple at the front, rear and sides to save your life, whilst maintaining a rigid safety cell in the middle. In the Bug's design days, that nice thick steel is a killer. VW made the steering wheel collapsable in the 60's but things like inertia reel seatbelts, full back head rests, effective brakes and padded interiors are foreign to early stock bugs.

I was watching Discovery the other day, and they have a great program on how research has made cars safer over the years. It used to be that crashes at above relative velocity of just 50 km/h were not survivable, but people now regularly walk away from frontal collisions with a delta v of near to 100 km/h.

I'd rather be in a modern car, with "thin" steel, brakes that work and airbags, than a old death trap any day.

Andrew

ps. Sorry about responding to a post that's more than six months old 🙂

pps. Good work on the new car!

VWFREAK ·

Thats crazy Barls, you have been a busy boy.

Dasdubber ·

Good stuff barls - I know the pain your going through!! Keep it up, great progress pics....its always nice for people to appreciate the nitty gritty stuff thats involved in any repairs/resto - its easy to see a finished product and think its a piece of piss!

Good to see the type IV getting a run too!

barls ·

yeah it was pretty crazy week and a bit but its almost there now. thanks bones and moose for the comments it helps keep my spirit up while its happening and things are coming down around me. i also found out that the seats i bought dont fit too wide, so ill most likely sell them to someone with a kombi.

Anthiron ·

why does your engine need a rebuild? didnt u only put it in the bug not long before u crashed it?

barls ·

thanks das i just hope its all i dream it will be, but like all projects are they ever finished

barls ·

because it leaks and it was surpose to be rebuilt when i got it but not the way it leaks

pete wood ·

What size is it?

BTW, you're doing great, keep up the good work and get it finished. I am hoping to see it at the nats at easter.

barls ·

its a bone stock 2L straight out of a kombi into a upright conversion and into my bug

Che Castro ·

wow great progress so far.

barls ·

thanks jon it really jumped forward over christmas

barls ·

should be at the painters in the next 2 weeks

barls ·

going to the painters this weekend hopefully. still have to find seats yet though

barls ·

stll in the old mans work shop i think? will be going up there this weekend to sort it out. might bring back some pics

frenzix ·

get it out and into it's new skin!

barls ·

its got its new skin just needs to get its new clothes

barls ·

after finding out that the panel beater doesnt want to do it now im looking for a new panel beater.
just got quoted $5000 and thats after ive done all the prep and am still waiting on the other quote

pete wood ·

man! what do you get for $5k?

barls ·

that was a respray in two pack apparently. inside and out

Lams ·

isn't that a bit steep? I was quoted about $3000 to change a Forester from white to - whatever

barls ·

yeah it is a bit considering its already to spray the first coat on and all the prep is done. i was expecting something like $1500 to 2500.

barls ·

wahooo hes now in the shop after many months and a couple of different panel beaters. not long now before he will be on the road

jenz58 ·

Very cool....did you get a good quote??...What colour??

barls ·

about $2200 thats inside and out plus the tinware and its ruby red

jenz58 ·

....very nice....was looking at an old red beetle near here yesterday...faded...thought how nice it would be resprayed....

barls ·

yeah ive been looking at a candy apple red bug and thinking that chaos will look good when hes finished

pete wood ·

yay, can't wait to see the pics. 🙂

barls ·

i can t wait to see it ether i get to see it at the end of this month

CoopGirl ·

Hey Barls, you will have to bring Kaos out here for a cruze when he is finished. Then you can help me with my square! lol

barls ·

maybe but can you wait that long cause as you should know when is a car project ever finished 😉

CoopGirl ·

Ha ha........... mine looks like it will be waiting for a while....... just hope it doesn't rust away while I'm waiting.

barls ·

yeah you might be cause i think kels got first dibs on my time after the bug is finished

CoopGirl ·

Bloody girlfriends! lol

barls ·

yeah they sure cut in to my beer time, the only bonus is she doesnt mind me brewing

pete wood ·

Any progress Barls?

barls ·

kinda but no pics i dont get them till i go up at the end of the month but dont worry it will be posted well maybe not all of it cause ive got to keep some secrets

pete wood ·

Secrets huh! :o

after all the support we've gien you, ingrate :P

barls ·

yeah secerts well at least till someone sees him then they will all be out. mostly they are just little things im doing different hopefully they pay off

barls ·

ill be spending the next week up at the old mans so more pics maybe the week after. should be back from the painters. i cant wait

Desert Moose ·

there better be photo's.........................lol :P

barls ·

yeah i know i really should stop teasing you all about it

barls ·

just started uploading the pics so here they are. as i had last week off work i thought i would do some work on chaos but since i didnt get him back from the spray painters till tuesday i started working on modifying the fan shroud.
heres the old one

and the new one

basically ive widened the dog house to fit the t4 cooler on a 36hp shroud that i bought and cut all the necessary holes for the pipes. i also reduced the heater pipes in side the shroud cause ill be using the suck through from the two bilge blowers i have. im happy with the way it turned out as i did all the wielding and its only my 3rd time oxy wielding
while i was doing this chaos came back here he is fresh of the flat bed truck from the painters. hmmm nice and shiney

actually the guy did a really good job he even smoothed out the guards and roof so they are now dent free.
spent the rest of the week putting him together so he has door locks, drivers and passenger windows and all panels were tightened and fitted into place. also fitted some sound deadener as well. here is the rest of the photos

waltermitty ·

Man thats RED Nice nice paintwork. Keep up the rythum . Mitchl

barls ·

yeah he is. im finding it hard to believe its the same car from the start of this thread 8 months ago. i even was able to use the quarter window from before the crash, ie the one with the bugs

Chewy ·

Hey barls, when you weld up thin sheet metal panels with a mig, do you just do a series of little tacks or what ??

barls ·

it depends on how thin the metal is with what i did it was done in about 5 sections with a couple of tacks to to get the shape but the fan housing i did with an oxy acetylene set and fusion wielding as its easier to control the heat so it doesnt warp as much

Chewy ·

But you do use the heaps of little tack methods on thin stuff??
Is there anything wrong with doing it that way?
cheers dude

barls ·

no theres nothing wrong with doing it that way mate its just that the way i did it was the way i was taught to wield by my old man. use what ever method works for you,

pete wood ·

What's the setup with ya guards? The front ones look widened, what about the back ones?

BTW, Love the colour, can't wait to see it all finished.

Dasdubber ·

Looking fantastic Barls - that paint work looks great. How nice does it feel having a freshly painted shell to work on.

Only problem is you feel bad reusing old components because they stand out against the new paint....and then you buy new ones which means more money!

Keep up the great work.

barls ·

the rears are stock cause the rims i have fit inside of them and i didnt like the look of the flair on the rear. yea das i know what you mean i was looking at the bumpers im using and thinking that i might have to get the rear rechromed cause its got gravel rash from the crash on it

kombi_kid ·

already leaking oil!!! ahahahahahaha looking good mate keep it up!
cheers
rhys

CoopGirl ·

Well done Barls!! He looks great..... now get back up there and finish him off!

barls ·

dont worry im going back up in a week or two for the weekend

Quoll ·

hey barls did you do the type 4 upright conversion yourself like not useing a kit?

barls ·

no mate i used the sharpbuilt kit its not a bad kit

barls ·

just a few more

Desert Moose ·

SOOOOOO NICE...................... well done, can't wait till the big day :thumb

barls ·

me nether mate its not long now mate i reckon about another 2 months to finish the rest but it all depends on how long it takes to rebuild the motor and redesign the exhaust and intake systems

barls ·

going up this weekend to fit some more parts, take some more pics and talk to the upholster as i now have a set of seats as of yesterday

pete wood ·

everytime I see ya front guards it reminds me of this page....

http://www.rallybugs.com/index.html

😎

[Edited on 16/6/2005 by pete wood]

barls ·

thanks peter

barls ·

no more pics as i forgot to take my camera but i did buy these seats

Bizarre ·

cool Barls

What are they out of??

barls ·

h ·

cool pics and what a story..
won't be long now till your out n about in it
well done barls

barls ·

yes mate it wont be long and it is a bit of a saga. im currently negotiating movie rights as well 😉 but im not sure who id get to play me

Che Castro ·

looks great barls. keep up the good work

barls ·

i will jon will have to go for a cruise when we both get our projects on the road

barls ·

its now at the upholsters for a head trim will be back soon

barls ·

its back from the upholsters and now has a headtrim so hopefully this weekend it will get the rest of the windows. ill get some more pics at the end of this month when i go up

barls ·

kombi_kid wrote:already leaking oil!!! ahahahahahaha looking good mate keep it up!

rhys
its taken me a while to figure out what you were talking about rhys but i now know and id just like to explain this one

there is a tap behind it that we use to wash our hands hence the water not oil

barls ·

going up this weekend to take some more pics but i think ill still keep a few secrets to my self.

nbturbo ·

Not fair-no secrets around here.Looking good so far.

barls ·

just for a little while trust me it will be worth it

barls ·

just got back from playing with chaos. had a very productive day yesterday. got the pop outs in the front kick panels ready to mount and the engine bay dressed up.
heres a few pics of the outside. ie running boards on, stone guards and washers and wipers fitted

heres a close up of my washer jet that i was after

pop outs fitted

heres the engine bay before we started

here it is half way through

here is my old man figuring the paneling out

here it is finished

heres some of the headtrim

here is the drivers seat mounted on the stock base with a nissan seat lifter fitted

here are the stock grills im using for a template

here are my first attempt at gauge panels

ruckus ·

Awesome work Barls!

barls ·

the engine has been started to be striped down

heres the tinware all painted up ready to go back on

heres the rest couldnt get them to work before and only just got back

nbturbo ·

Youv'e got it coming along real nice.Who ever did your headlining really did an awesome job.Like the running boards as well.I see you have your motor apart again-well down to having the heads apart.

Dasdubber ·

Great stuff Barls - love the updates - lookin schmik!

nbturbo ·

Don't know what happened then-I posted about seeing your motor apart in one of the interior shots-when I get back on-theres a pic of your motor apart-must have posted at the same time-Tin ware looks good.

barls ·

thanks guys the head trim was done by one of the local blokes and when we get the motor done hes doing the rest of the car. its not bad considering the old mans doing most of the work with me helping when i get up there and could only manage one day this time but hopefully ill get up there before i have to join the boat next month and have to go away on a 3 month trip

barls ·

yeah i really dint have time before to fix it to show all the pics but just did it.

twoguns ·

your dads doin a good job, barls! 👍 my lady was over htere the other day. she said it was looking nice.

barls ·

yeah i know she was there cause she left her drink bottle there and its sitting over near the register. id spend more time up there but work prevents it, that and the old mans trying to build a new boat as well

sleeper ·

if you can afford prestige plates i think REBORN will suit it well or AS NEW or REBIRTH ....well done, this is what i call being passionate and dedicated in keeping the culture alive thumbs up 🙂

Fossil ·

lookin good

barls ·

thanks guys but i think ill pass on the prestage plate at this stage as i dont think ill have many $$$ when its finished but ill have an awesome car

barls ·

went for a small mid week trip up to work on him and see the upholster cause im going to be away for a while. but i did get new gauge panels made up and the kick panels mounted.

the engine is also together just has to have the tinware go back on it. heres a pic of the heater boxes on the way we are going to run them.

the new exhaust will be started soonnn[ Edited on 26-8-05 by barls ]

barls ·

just got back from another small trip up there and ill put some more pics up tomorrow or the day after if i get the chance to get them up on the net.

barls ·

my old man has been busy since i was last there so not a lot has been done but he did get one of the new heater box covers made and has the other one half made. so here it is in all its stainless glory.

and here is the motor almost complete. the coper piping for the oil filler will be replaced eventually with braided lines. also the link age for the accelerator has been relocated to under the alternator.

here is the air ducting for the heater

and here is the whole car since we havent had one of them for a while

[ Edited on 23-10-05 by barls ]

twoguns ·

man that engine and heater set up is looking pretty good. still cant get past the front guards ❗, but its looking like its coming together.

barls ·

thanks wes its taking ages but its getting there slowly. as ive said before the guards will be filled when i change wheels

barls ·

ok now has 2 heater boxes done the engine now has to go in so the rest of the heater system can be modified to fit. ill try to get some pics but im not sure when im going up there.

barls ·

ok just got back from playing with chaos it was a quick trip up. i got some more pics of the heater box setup of mine.

here is my new accelerator linkage set up as well

also the engine is now in the car. the first is the engine just before it went in

plus i started the air box its over in this thread
http://forums.aussieveedubbers.comviewtopic.phptid=38890&page=2#pid426826
also picked up the door trims finally

the manifolds have also been painted to match the tinware

[ Edited on 13-12-05 by barls ]

Dasdubber ·

Good stuff Barls - lookin sweet! Bet you are starting to itch to get in and drive it!

barls ·

you bet your arse i am hopefully have it back on the road by early jan

nbturbo ·

Thanks for the pics Barls.Just went back to the start and reread your whole story-well done and it's looking real good.

barls ·

cheers mate going back up tomorrow till christmas so should get some more done

barls ·

ok the new front end is now in. its 30mm lower than stock. here are the struts before they were assembled.

had a great time trying to get the old struts apart as you can see

here they are partially installed

i thought i had some of the car after they had been installed to compare the ride height.

also i made myself a breather box based on the stock one to bolt in to the spot where the oil filler was normally on the sharpbuilt.

the manifolds is now on and most of the engine is now complete

i also did some more work on the airbox which ill put in the the other thread

barls ·

ok it lives the old man started it up and apart from being loud, still doesnt have an exhaust, it ran well after a few wiring adjustments. here is the electric fuel pump under the front.

here is the control vents for the heater they still have to be modified to suit.

here is the engine bay with the oil breather and heater fresh air pipes fitted

also the fun job of reconnecting all the electricals has started cause as you can see its a mess and i havent even put the stereo in yet

Dasdubber ·

Looking great barls - what fuel pump is that you are using? I seriously have to change from my Holley Blue - it is so loud! I think I will go with a rotary one but not sure which yet.

barls ·

its the fuel misser from repco with in built regulator. its quiet i can barely hear it in the car

barls ·

the old man came for a visit today and brought some more pics of whats been happening
here is the heater finished and hooked up

its a completely custom job on the dash panels as well as they have been redone yet again. one side has been remade as the other were too thin and buckled as they were fitted still have to make the panel to hold the other two gauges.

the tacho and others guages have been wired up.
also the airbox is slowly getting tidied up as well

Dasdubber ·

Good stuff Barls - I look forward to seeing some more pics as it gets closer to completion! Bet you can't wait to give that type IV a good dose of the right foot!

oldnslo ·

Awesome, well done

barls ·

damn right i cant wait to give it a good dose of the right foot, but ill have to go easy as its still a stock box and i gave it a thrashing before the crash and it needs to be upgraded to with stand it. what im really looking forward to is seeing what the difference is between the stock cam and the mild ive got installed

barls ·

went up on the weekend and played with it but unfortunately forgot the camera so no pics but luckly not much has changed. it now has the stereo wired up as well as the 2 speed switch for the heater fan, both gauge panels are in with the guages fitted, the breather has been sealed and bolted in place. i didnt get a chance to fit ether the stickers or the new shifter. the back seats getting dropped off to the upholster this week some time and the sunvisors should be done at the same time. i thought it couldnt be too noisy with only heater boxes on so i started it up and i think i woke people up in the next town 😉

twoguns ·

i am in the next suburb, and i didnt hear it! give it a rev next time, hey...

barls ·

ok i will mate

VWFREAK ·

Looking good Barls. Can't wait to send the end product.

barls ·

cheers bones it shouldnt be too long now

barls ·

he in getting his exhaust today so not long now only the interior and the airbox to clean up and finish. then he will need a tune

[ Edited on 29-3-06 by barls ]

pete wood ·

no offense barls, but have you ever heard 'never ending story'?

ah, but who am I to talk, a nine 9 month project took me 3 and half years :duh

barls ·

i have heard of the neverending story, it was quite good at the cinema. but there is a light at the end of the tunnel after almost 20 months

nbturbo ·

Never give in to it-I started mine in Feb. 2000 and still a way to go.Lookin good Barls.

[ Edited on 29-3-2006 by nbturbo ]

barls ·

cheers nb i remember what my old man says and thats "its a projects and they are never finished"

kroozzn63 ·

excelent work barls i just scrolled through the whole link shes looking great but like
wes i just cant deal with the front guards but please prove us wrong with those wheels of yours

barls ·

ok had a visit from the old man with some more pics. here it is with the exhaust finished. from the rear

under left guard

under right guard

and some under car pics

it now also has a stereo fitted but no speakers in the car yet. so here is another little different idea with the antenna.

after so long of the door trim sitting in the office they have been fitted so here they are

pete wood ·

And the award for the longest exhaust to be fitted to a VW goes to...

BARLS!!!😁

But seriously, looks like a great design, nice and quite and you get to keep your heaters, 👍

Can't wait to see what comes next.

barls ·

next is the rest of the interior and the airbox. id like to say that even though the old man has been working his arse off its not going to make the nats this year. maybe the next show though

barls ·

ok hes in the upholster for the last time at the moment and the old man is picking him up later today so when i go up next week i should have him registered and more pics to appease the masses. not that hes coming back to sydney with me yet as he still needs a bit of a tidy up in the engine bay and a run in

squizy ·

tick tock Barls.....so is that a single muffler per side like twin hot dogs on a baja?

barls ·

yeah it is along with a shit load of pipe to help reduce the volume and create a decent tone. ill get a video of it running so you can hear it

pete wood ·

how close now?

Bizarre ·

pete wood wrote:how close now?

2010 :jesus

barls ·

id say end of june 2006 for rego then back in sydney maybe late july early august 2006

pete wood ·

👍

barls ·

here is just a bit of a teaser till i get back on friday
the air box, and engine bay which still needs a bit more of a tidy up

the back seat, still have to attach the parcel shelf and rear speakers

still have to finish tidying up under the bonnet, note the yellow jumper lead on the left

the carpet

barls ·

ok just got back from playing with it and here are some new pics
the new interior with shifter, front speakers and extinguisher fitted

here are all the trims fitted

and rear seat

and the test fitting of the parcel shelf

the electric washer pump fitted

here are some new ones of the air box as well, with the cover fitted

without

the rims fitted up on it

the lowered front end

we rotated the muflers under the car to gain clearance to the tires

as a result one of the tail pipes doesnt fit and needs to be redone

and whats this the biggest surprise of all

its registered and street legal as of yesterday. the old man will be driving it to help tidy it up and get it tuned

warb ·

good one mate, rego and all.. time to drive!..

barls ·

im sure the old man is doing burn outs up there now in it

nbturbo ·

Looking good there Barls-I can't figure what you have done with the front speakers-they don't seem to stick out very far.

bugeyedbabe ·

congrats barls...its been a long time coming, but it looks like it your patience has paid off.

sit back, relax, let dad fine tune it..and grab yourself a few beers

:beer:beer:beer

(bet ur smile is about half a mile wide)

barls ·

cheers all my smile is about a mile wide at the moment, it sounds great unfortunately i didnt get a movie to show you all how it sounds. the front speakers are just in a set of those plastic kick panels from empi that i covered in dynamat to give them some strength now only need the silvia fronts seats to be upholstered and the left one to be fitted and it will be finished for the moment anyway

Bizarre ·

:thumb

Well done mate

Your gunna have to bring it round soon so we can have a few celebratory sherberts while i spend an arvo drooling over it

barls ·

maybe after valla mate as im not intending to bring it back until after then, got to let the old man have his time at playing with it

Desert Moose ·

About bloody time...........lol :P

well done , it looks sweet

pete wood ·

good stuff. you must be stoked. interesting air box. a lick of paint will make it look a bit less like the kitchen plumbing. 😉

Is it quiet to drive?

bond ·

this is nice barls! you've done well! evidently alot of time has gone into this bad boy!

the front fenders are an interesting choice - is different...

congrats - not long now from the looks

nick :thumb

barls ·

hey pete i havent driven it but the old man said shes quiet on the road but ill let you know, and the airbox most likely will get a coat of something in the next couple of weeks right after its actually sealed as well as its just a tight fit together at this stage.
cheers moose and bond

barls ·

not much more progress but now has fully working dash lights. as well as the front seats have been dropped to the upholster to be finished. valla is looking good

barls ·

got the fronts back but i dont have any pics, now only waiting on sunvisors and parcel shelf to be done then the interior is finished for the moment. so it looks like im cruising in style peoples

vwrx ·

excellent work

barls ·

took him for his first run on the valla weekend, it was damn good to be back behind the wheel of him. it was well worth the trip, as i got a lot of comments, mostly good and a couple of bad, at valla on the sunday. i even surprised the owner of the yellow new beetle cabrio as we came back from the parade on saturday when we hit the overtaking lane on the way back to the park. ill put up some pics tomorrow night when im at home

pyr0 ·

looks awesome mate 👍 you back in sydney yet with this beast ?

barls ·

no mate there was no point as im deploying again on monday for a couple of months so i left it with the old man to play with. so you should come and get that indicator unit this weekend

bugeyedbabe ·

hey barls,

it was great to catch up with u...and see this beast in rl....such a nice car...i did wonder if u'd notice my swapping my car for urs, but figured the color change might give me away....

on the other hand, given how fast urs goes, compared to mine...well...i'd have the beast well adn truely stashed before u arrived...if u were game enuf to drive it... :P

anyway...how ur deployment is fun. dont work to hard ok...(what am i thinking...u already told me u dont work...ur just paid to appear there...lol)

barls ·

id notice trust me. plus you had to get it started first as there is a trick to it.
yeah it was good to put names to faces.
ill try not to work too hard and i might even get some photos of me working

barls ·

ok here we go the pics of my little beast at valla

damn it was quiet on the highway and the power was astounding

barls ·

and i forgot to get some pics of the front seats so you all could see them but they still need playing with as the drivers is a tad too high

barls ·

just started driving this full time and its a blast. also i finally fitted up the rear speakers so now ive got the full system.

koolkarmakombi ·

are you going to put a roll cage in this one?

:beer:beer:beer:beer:beer:beer:beer:beer

wacked1 ·

barls this is one very nice bug, can't wait for that ride you promised.
cheers
ron

barls ·

not a problem maybe at boris' birthday or the next cruise

esevwbits ·

The full system?
:P Like this?!

2x 12" cerwin vega comp subs
2x sony 2way 6"s
2x kenwood 4way 6"s
2x fusion 3way 6x9s
1x precision response 370rms x2 chan bridged amp
1x boss 2chan 500w amp
2x jensen tweeters in front
2x super piezo 300w tweeters in rear
1x alpine dvd head unit
1x 7" monitor
2 custome made boxes for the bug.. which i did a while ago.. but only carpeted everything 2 weeks ago hehe

Happy result. PumpS!

barls ·

not bad mate but a little too much for me ill stick with the ones i got

esevwbits ·

yeh it is very loud.. you gotta get out to turn it up.. but its clear on all frequencies.. so you are able to play at listenable levels. 🙂
anyway, Cars coming up great! goodluck!

barls ·

had fun on the freeway today had no problem passing just about everybody even gave some of them a surprise when all of a sudden im alongside them at 110km/h. but still have a few things to fix and tidy up

barls ·

here it is at the nats this year

nbturbo ·

Been a while Barls-looking very nice.

barls ·

yeah not much has happen to it. got some new goodies going in over the next 3 or so weeks. i did have fun watching people try and figure out what it was in the engine bay. most of them thought it was a t1 turbo. not the straight stock t4 it is also i had one guy try and figure out how i got the twin pipes on my exhaust

barls ·

the old man and i got some work done and finally fitted my new strut in preparation for the next step.
before

old ones

new ones

comparison

and here is the end result
ill take more pics later in the week after its settled

pete wood ·

dead sexy 😏

I trust it's getting some extra go soon?

Brad ·

What are the details on your new struts ?

barls ·

they are vforce items. 944 struts if i remember correctly. they are 2 inches shorter than stock.
its not getting some extra go but it is getting something else though which will look just as cool and let me change back to stock front guards

pete wood ·

hang on, I an hear the voices calling to me....ever so faint, but I can hear them....

TUURRRBOOO IIITTTT.....

cmon, you know you wanna. 🤓

barls ·

is that what your voices say pete?
mine say things like "brew it and they will come" and "you know you want another beer"

but we will see what happens in the future mate who knows what is happening

barls ·

here is my high line brake light, its been installed since i built it but never put up pics of it

i also finally put the stickers i had for it on as well this weekend, had them for ages but finally got around to it

ive also picked up a set of rims to go with the new struts but i think ill keep them under wraps for the moment

trickysimon ·

Nice idea with the light. How did you manage to get it in their and hooked up?
Simon

barls ·

a piece of piss really. its one of these
http://www.ryda.com.au/Aerpro-EL200R-Red-Led-Light-Stick-20cm-p/el200r.htm
and i just put a couple of terminals on it and hooked up to the diagnosis box for the connections. as for getting in in there that was fun. i put the top half of the mounts in there on the light then only had to line up the holes and put two screws in to hold it from under the panel once it was feed up the side of the vents from the engine bay

barls ·

its been a while since i posted an update. chaos hasnt been home for 2 weeks now and looks like another week before ill get him back.
stand by for updates.

p.s i know im teasing but can anyone guess what im getting done?

Special Air Service ·

Struts, brakes, wheels & new front guards?

How did I go????

Barls are you going to the Dyno Day at Maitland & are you going from Sydney or Taree?

Cheers
Brendan

barls ·

lets see brendan, struts have been done a while ago.
wheels hmmmmm but thats not what im talking about.
guards as above.
have you been for a visit to the old mans recently by the guess of the answers?
dont know yet swmbo has yet to give it the go ahead, but if i do it will be from sydney.

barls ·

pics to come towards the end of next week.

barls ·

actually brendan i was thinking of something like this

btw this is just a mock up.

Special Air Service ·

Thats the direction I thought you were headed in.

barls ·

what 17x7?
maybe but this is still not the upgrade i was talking about. should be getting the car back on the weekend so pics then.

barls ·

getting him back tomorrow.
heres a teaser

more on sunday

barls ·

ok guys i just picked the car up. sounds great with the new exhaust. its well worth the money spent as its a one off custom system to match the heaterboxes
so here is the rest of the pics.

and here it is installed after being ceramic coated

ive currently got a single muffler fitted to it.

vassy66T1 ·

Wild ...
Good work ... don't think I've seen one quite like it before. 👍

Joel ·

all that needs is a nice T3 turbo flange instead and a garrett hair drier 😉

perfect hideaway turbo system

barls ·

been playing a little bit more at richards
what do you all think? look mean?

i put a berg style mount in as well. it made a real difference

i cant wait to have this baby on the free way nd see how she cruises now.

rose ·

Hi Barls

It looks a lot like Ian's bug.

barls ·

its close a slightly different shade of red though.

Bizarre ·

how is the brace??

VDUBXTC ·

Have you changed your front guards Barls?

Bizarre ·

Yeah

Penicillin twice a day for a month makes the swelling go down 😁

barls ·

maybe do they make it look smaller?

barls ·

Bizarre wrote:how is the brace??
great between that and the shift bush replacement.
im having fun. actually watch out for me on the f3 heading north on friday.

VDUBXTC ·

Looks like you have.
They look alot rounder and more fitting to the car. + your bumpers come out to the end of the guards now. 😀
If i am right and you have gone back to the stock guards I give you the thumbs up👍. Double thumbs up👍👍 with that wheel choice too.

barls ·

yeah i have just fitting up the chrome trims for the lights. its amazing what comes up cheap sometimes.

Jacques ·

barls wrote:
barls,

great job. Congratulations.

1 questions please:

the front fender is original?

barls ·

not in that pic its not. those are a set of flared guards from fibre fab in melbourne. it now has stock guards with the porsche rims.

squizy ·

Barl's we are all too polite. About time you pissed off those fibreglass guards.

Chaos is now the real deal. Looks great!

pod ·

squizy wrote:Barl's we are all too polite. About time you pissed off those fibreglass guards.

and now with some new stickers

ang3lsholocaust ·

Looking good now barls

barls ·

had a play with the rear end, its now level. i also changed the fender beading. ill get some pics tomorrow.

Bizarre ·

Does the word "carbs" mean ANYTHING to you??? 😁

barls ·

dont know what your talking about barry.
which reminds me must ring richard tomorrow and see how he is.

Bizarre ·

Gimme another beer

barls ·

Bizarre ·

I aint going anywhere

Cant believe i can press keys in propper order 🙅

barls ·

take a number on that one.
im on the 7th strong belgian and ive got to work tomorrow.

barls ·

just got the car back after not having it for 3 weeks, omg the difference the few mods have made, looking forward to driving to work tomorrow.
ill post pics of what i got done.

barls ·

how to make a bug growl properly

got these installed and man it makes a difference

[URL=http://smg.photobucket.com/user/barls80/media/13032010117.jpg.html

it was a saga to fit them as every thing you pulled off there was something else to be done.
heres also the beading change i did a while ago.
[URL=http://smg.photobucket.com/user/barls80/media/13032010115.jpg.html

Bizarre ·

a bit more mumbo now???

electronic ignition as well??

Craig Torrens ·

Why did the manifolds have to be cut and welded ?

Bizarre ·

cause they didnt fit

barls ·

they caused the dells to hit the body.
a lot more mumbo now

Craig Torrens ·

bummer, so they just dont bolt up then for a beetle ?

barls ·

no they dont. you have a lot to learn about t4 craig. nothing just bolts up it, all has to be modified.
if you want to learn more have a chat with richard and see what he tells you mate.

Bizarre ·

Apparently T4 manifolds are quite different from other T4 manifolds

I believe these were CB ones

barls ·

no these are the european ones that come in different sizes i think. i know he bought them in separately to the air cleaners.
the name is eluding me atm.

Chappo ·

Wholly crap Barls! 😵 What a great job to bring what was a wreck to a thing of beauty. Barls you are my go to man!

I hope I can do my newly acquired 63 beetle up to that standard. Now I know why you you mentioned the T4 on Aussie Home Brewer

Chap Chap

barls ·

hey chappo good to see you over here. yeah it was a bit of an effort but we are talking over 5 years now so its just a slow evolution.

grumble ·

Happy Anniversary Barls & Kel and many more happy years to look forward to,you know that I wouldn't forget. Cheers the Grumpy man

barls ·

cheers grumble i know your going to do a service on kels car when you come up for easter.

grumble ·

Do you have ESP or something? I might be afraid to touch it after the throttle cable on the bug!👍 Hey chappo he had a little help from another direction.

barls ·

hey you didnt even fit that one. you were on the other end of the phone taking the abuse.

grumble ·

Carefactor 0.I have taken better abuse than that from Lenny on a Saturday afternoon while sailing,I'll tell you a funny story next time we are down!😂

barls ·

havent done much to him recently so turned myself up a new gear knob out of jarrah. came up pretty nice actually.

barls ·

just fitted a new ignition unit, its tuning up nicely.
made a bit of a difference.
ill put up some pics tomorrow if i get a chance.

barls ·

heres the pic finally

made a difference, a lot smoother in idle.

grumble ·

Hey dude watch the kink in that breather hose,it may need a spring over it.🙅

barls ·

so with all the wet weather we had, i fell victim to the idiot driver that changes lanes mid intersection.
in the dry i probably would of stood a chance on just a damaged guard but no chance was put in to a telegraph post.
what pissed me off more was his attitude and there was no damage to his car supposedly.
oh well his insurance is paying for the repairs and hire car so i can get around while they fix it.

Bizarre ·

Bloody hell mate. That's not good.

1303Steve ·

bugger

barls ·

yep, my worry is the head frame and if i damaged it.
ill also be pushing for the car seat and belts involved to be changed.
we were very lucky no one was hurt although i think my eldest learnt new words.

barls ·

so they finally got the bonnet open and the floor pan is bent at the front. but they think its repairable. now just for the insurance company to make the decision .

1303Steve ·

I think Steve Muller has some new pan hammer heads. How much is the car insured for?

barls ·

27g.
ill see what happens. the didn't say the pan head just the pan and i haven't looked at it.
thanks though steve

barls ·

ok went and picked up the golf from the repairs it needed and had a look. no photos though.
the damage goes back as far as the wheel well that was the floor they were talking about so head frame should be good hopefully. also means they shouldn't write it off.

beetleboyjeff ·

That's a good start then.

barls ·

so after a little bit of a wait I've had him back for a week or so now.
he is so shiny.

Bizarre ·

Great stuff!!

Yogie ·

Congratulations. He looks great.

Yogie

1303Steve ·

it must feel good to drive it again

barls ·

lets see if that works better with the pic.
