the star ranks have been MIA for a long time. Definitely since 1.8 Final (about twelve months).
I think it's somehting along the lines of the early then later different admin schemas we've had conflicting with the later code. I've fixed it in the past, but as it affects three of 2500 users, I just don't care enough to fix it right now.

Seagull, yes the super admin (me), changed the template which contains a portion of viewthread.
Post counts are pretty irrelevant. The stars still work.

Server space is pretty irrelevant. We're doing just fine on that front.
Network bandwidth should be sorted once we start using the gallery instead - allow us to spread the load between the two sites.
Sorting through hundreds of non-VW posts which wastes everyone's time, which is why I went on a bit of a rampage with the templates.
