A club here in S.A. has refused to allow people with alternative engined vws to join or be members.
A founding member has threatened to quit if suburu, holden v6 or any other engined volksies are allowed to join.
He has stated that the club rules state that the club is only for " vehicles with an engine manufactured by volkswagen".
So by the rules you can have a Purvis Eureka or a Holden EH as long as it has a volksie motor in it, so a SEAT engine in the type 3 is O.K..
But your suburu powered splitty or your v6 bay cannot join the club?
Now for the interesting bit.
There are members of the club who have Autocraft engines, these are not manufactured by VW.
Where does it end, the Scat crank in a type 1 engine is not manufactured by VW, the engle cam, the webbers some people use were not fitted by VW.
What about Okrasa, or empi??
Interestingly the founding member has an oval with a split rear window fitted,
Just for the record I think the more VWs on the road the better , who cares what engine is in it.
Some people like the looks of VWs but prefer the reliability and power of a newer engine, ( that should start some feed back?)
What do you think???.
Cheers
Dave

there's probably gonna be more than that Dave.
It's a shame that politics always have to get in the way of everything.
Unless there is a bit of a shake up in the hierarchy of the club, it is in great danger of becoming stagnant.
I'm of the same opinion, the more VW's on the road the better, and it annoys me that some people have such a closed mind. Not only because my car is one of the offending non VW powered vehicles.
This mentioned club is for volkswagen "enthusiasts".
Would a person who wasn't enthusiastic about VW's bother with putting in the time, effort, and $$ into keeping their beloved VW on (or off) the road by giving it a new lease on life with a more reliable, more powerful, and arguably most importantly, a more economical engine?
can you tell that my VW doesn't have a VW engine in it?

Hi
This subject came to head in Sydney many years ago when a kit car which didnt have a VW engine, only had VW suspension and trans won car of the day. Our club in Sydney has just had to learn to appreciate other peoples cars with any motor and our consititution doesent decriminate any longer. The scene in SA and the rest of Australia is to small to have many upsets, so tell the guy to pull his head in.

Let this guy quit. It'll be his loss not the clubs. Decisions like whether the club lets non-vw engined cars join needs too be a "club" decision, not one guys decision. It should got to vote at a club meeting. If it gets through, and this guy leaves, so be it.
amazer ·
Club VW Illawarra never used to allow non VW engined cars to be displayed as club vehicles. I dont know if it has changed now. In late 80's early 90's it came to a head and people left when a roatary engine became involved. Personally I agree with the idea.

the problem is drawing the line. It easier to say its got to be vw powered, or also easy to say the club is for vw drivers and doesn't amtter what you drive as long as you like and enjoy vw's of any type. Having rukes in the middle is the hard part, as ppl will always being willing to push the rules, eg like some body said, what about a kit car which only runs vw suspension?
my pov is the club should be about the ppl an their love of anything vw. but that is my persoanl approach and that is why I joined the club i did, it has everything from ppl who like stock ovals through to ppl who run subaru powered carevlle's. the scene is to small to have little clubs for each section of the community.
MikeM ·
What about people who currently don't own anything at all VW but have an interest in purchasing a VW? are they allowed to join?
I think clubs should be for people who have an interest in VW's, whether you own one or not.
nbturbo ·
Dave-I have known the said founding member for nearly 40 years and he would be the consummate VW fanatic. However,he has always had an open mind to modifying/hotrodding VW's of any type,so when I read about this in the Newsletter I was quite shocked. History tells me there is something deeper causing concern here??
vwtyp2 ·
What about people who currently don't own anything at all VW but have an interest in purchasing a VW? are they allowed to join?
technically no, because it is in the constitution that membership is only open to owners of VW powered vehicles.
I think clubs should be for people who have an interest in VW's, whether you own one or not.
yes, this tends to be the general consensus, apart from a small minority.
blutopless2 ·
just tell him to leave the club if he is not happy. these sort of people are the reason that alot of people interested in cars etc dont join clubs. besides, he can always start his own club, then he can make the rules whatever he wants.
Secoh ·
a club, by definition, is a collection of elitists or closed social group. So to see this attitude is not surprising.
However, if a club is too elitist then numbers dwindle, eventually to 1 or 2 members.
At one stage the only way to access Ringwood hillclimb track or King Edward Park racing was to be a member of the Newcastle MG club as they took over Newcastle Sporting Car Club, but initially they wouldnt let non-MG owners in at all, then had them as "associate" members, denying them any access other than entry to events, preference given to MG owners of course. (if maximum entry allowance was 100 entrants, and 2 were non MG owners, their entry would be returned to them if 2 MG owners wanted to run at the last minute).
I joined for about a year when I had the turbo crown so I could race it at ringwood. But this attitude gave me the sh*ts big time and I basically gave up racing in Newcastle since then. Stuff elitists, let them go live in their caves.
I am looking at joining Westlakes actually 🙂

What that guy needs is to pull his head out of his arse.
Unity-28 ·
What club is it? I mean, I tend to agree with the guy if the rules are there. If the rule was just made recently, well that is bullshit, but if its a long standing rule, and thats the way the club wants to go, well thats their decision. My opinion is that a true VW has a VW engine in it, but I do admire VWs with other makes of engine....THere was also a question above about okrasa and empi, well, you cant question that, cause they are period made parts and accsesories for VW.
N!
57kombi ·
Unity,
What I was saying was if the constitution states that it must have an engine manufactured by volks wagen.
Then if you fit empi, scat etc parts they were not manufactured by volkswagen therefore you would be breaking the rules of the constitution and could not join the club.
The founding member has stated "that the constitution is a legally binding document" and so all members with modified engines should be thrown out!!!!.
The whole point is if it is a club for people who like VWs, then who cares what engine it has. This way we get to see more on the road, and that surley is the best thing.
Cheers
Dave
Unity-28 ·
I agree with most of that, As I am building a bug that is highly modified, but if thats the rules and have always been the rules, we all must repect that. YOu could always start another club in S.A and let all types of vw join, then you will see how this particular club goes. Its always nice thought to have a stock only type of club.....
twoguns ·
yep. i agree with unity. if the club has been built on these rules and doesnt want to change, then really why should it. members that chose to agree will join and those that dont will form their own club. what you dont need is the animosity that members have for each other or one club for another over things like peoples choice of rides. htere is room for clubs and people with their own points of view. look at GFK in the states as an example...
last celtic warrior ·
So technically, if you're driving to a club meeting and your VW motor falls out on the road, you're out of the club because you car is no longer VW powered. Which makes sense in an obscure way, because if your motor falls out, you're not going to make it to the club meeting, so you may as well not be in the club anyway if you can't make it to the meetings...
:blah:blah:blah:blah:blah
Stealth ·
Jeez, wonder if i can join with a New Beetle???? I keep getting told it's not a REAL Volkswagen 😉
nbturbo ·
I have one and they let me in with it-so therefore they must be a real Volkswagen.
57kombi ·
Sorry Unity and Twoguns but you are missing the point.
The rules of the club state that membership is for people with engines manufactured by volkswagen.
The founding member does not want other engines, fair enough but where do you draw the line and who draws it.
Auto craft is not manufactured by volkswagen but he doesnt have a problem with that?
Scat parts and empi or any of the numerous other parts are not manufactured by volkswagen, so should all the members who have these parts be kicked out.
The funny thing is , like I said before this member has a split window fitted into an oval.
Myself and quite a few other people just dont like the fact that one person can deciede what stays and what goes.
As always this is just my view.
Cheers
Dave
Unity-28 ·
IT might be an engine BLOCK Thing, as it would almost be impossible to have an all VW engine in this day and age. BUt I say you take all these people with modified VWS and start your own club, and you will see who has the worries, let him have his hour of power, but when he relises that no-one likes his standard, he will either change or the club will die. it will be sad, but thats the way it goes sometimes. But Rules are rules, and if they are the rules they must be respected.
N!
vwtyp2 ·
Just to stand on the other side of the fence for a moment Dave,
Yes, the constitution is a legally binding document, and it does state that the club is for owners of VW powered vehicles.
The ONE person on the receiving end of most of this fiasco was advised BEFORE he joined the club that this was the case, and not to expect to be welcomed with open arms by all in the club.
The membership secretary admits to making a mistake in offering him membership.
It seems as though that this is the ONLY member/vehicle there is a problem with, although there are other members in the club who also have alternative powered VW's. But these other members also have VW's with VW engines, which makes them eligable for membership (even though the club member in question with the non VW engine is currently doing another engine conversion involving a VW engine, which was apparently known by the person with the issue before he kicked up about it).
As they say, the rules are the rules.
Maybe another club, with more emphasis on enjoying all VW's and less emphasis on politics isn't such a bad idea?
Oh, the split window oval thing, that's a genuine VW section grafted into a VW. So I guess that's still pure blood. 🙂
Not trying to defend anyone, just offering a different standpoint. 🙂🙂🙂
barls ·
it still a modified bug cause it is not the way it was original, i say fine do it but dont pass it off as something its not say its an oval with a splitty grapht. but then i disagree with their whole alternate engine stance. i say so long as its based on a vw, its a vw.
Secoh ·
who's club is it? the founding member's or the members in total? I'd say the founding member(s), so if you don't like it, start your own club. It really is one of those things where if you don't agree you simply don't be a part of it. (same reason my VW stuff goes on eBay and not here, because I don't agree with the rules here 🙂)
Spook ·
AQs a well known purist, I'm with him.
If a club has had these rules from the outset, where is the problem?
If people don't like it, no one is forcing them to stay.
Body modifications are a different animal. I can't see the problem with grafting part of one beetle onto another.
Fitting rice burner parts- thats different.
vwombat ·
Some people really need to get over themselves!
If it is a club for purists, then let it be. Isn't that a good thing for keeping stock resto's happening? Good on you guys!
BUT technically speaking, I think purism has it's place ONLY at show's (and in SPECIFIC categories). Clubs should be about people helping out people and enjoying dubs. Just my opinion!
If some people want to keep a purist club, then whatever. It's a free world, filled with all sorts of clubs and all sorts of dubs. It's a shame when people decide to get all political and negative tho'. It's a human condition that I thought belonged more to NON-DUBBER'S, but unfortunately not.
And as for the more layed back, or "hot roddin' dub-mutation" people, you'll probably all outlive the purists with their anal rules and reg's, so don't worry about it. You can come and buy their nice clean rides after they pass on, and drop in a watercooled V8! Doing a donut on their graves must give you some sort of satisfaction?

Cut them all up if you wish. If you have the car you can do as you please. Nothing would stop me from chopping or otherwise modifying even a split beetle.
The design process ends with the user not the factory. The same way as a novel isn't finished until the reader has read it. The creative process is never ending and the more people fashion cars to suit themselves the better.

Golly....another great debate going on here
Modified VW's are a big part of the VW culture now.....so this guy shold get with the times
Just as some people choose to modify....other choose equally to restore, and not to have it put away in a museum .... A lot of expense goes with either of these two options so our rides are equally as precious to us all
VW's are not just rides with a rear mounted flat 4 aircooled engine ...my Type 3 Sqback has a pancake aircooled engine ....and it in the rear
Ghias are part of the scene also....and new VW's...escpecially if the driver is aware they are driving one and the meaning of being a dubber 😉
Has this new ruling just come into the club...sounds like it...was there a vote on it? ....Maybe I lost track of what happened to start the debate of all this....

I'm not excluding watercooled VW's at all. I'm not anti water in any way. If I had the money I would go out and buy myself a spanking new caravelle. Even an older T3 caravelle. I did hold a grudge against new beetles when they were released but I'm over that now. To my knowledge noone has dropped a mazda engine into a golf/beetle/polo/passat/tourag/T4..... And it wouldnt bother me too much if they did (I dont believe that they are a classic, and I dont believe they ever will be) If/when it happens they will have to leave that club too.
Until someone from that club lets all the other members know that he/she is going to move a motion to change the clubs constitution at the AGM thats what the rules are and there's nothing a lot of bleating on here is gonna do.

If you say VW to someone outside our ranks, they will imediately think of a beetle or kombi & the "dak dak" noise they make because, in the end, the sound of an air cooled VW is as distinctive as the shape. I can hear a kombi coming from a block away.
As for this continual call that if it says VW it's the same breed as mine. So the next time I see someone get out of a Seat, I should embrace them & call them brother. I think not.

Would I own a 2004 Caravelle? Yes, I would, but in my eyes, it would never be a kombi. Any more than one of those Californian concepts will ever be a beetle.

OF course a Caravelle is not a Kombi otherwise it would have been called a Kombi and not a caravelle. I am under the impression that VW has never referred to the "original" beetle as a beetle where as the new beetle is called a beetle from factory.
Therefore, unless I am totally off the beaten track does this make the new beetle the only beetle and the older style a wannabe ??????
And before you start sending me hissy replys to this post, this is not Rod writing this, it is Tracey aka ms cabrio. I am really pissed that some people on this forum are so small minded. this is the one of the most sensible posts on this thread.
I joined the Volks Enthusiasts Club of South Australia for the same reason.
I love Volkswagens, all of them, hell, I've had beetles, bays, splits, ovals, type 3's, a K.G., single cabs, double cabs, a panel van, now a Golf 4, and even a Seat Cordoba. (yes the Seat was eligable for membership)
Point is, I wanted to join a club that had members of a similar mindset and were all about enjoying their cars and appreciating others.
I wouldn't drive anything but a VW, and I need the practicality of a van.
But to get a 30 year old VW engine to match modern performance in terms of power AND reliability just isn't economically feasible.
this is why I bought a van that has a non VW engine in it.
When I blow someone off at the lights and they finally catch me and ask me what's in it, of course I reply it's a VW.
I don't know what the problem is with giving your car a heart transplant, I see it as giving it another lease on life, and keeping another VW on the road.
pete wood ·
I really wanted a late model, powerful, reliable (try 1million km), multivalve, efi, boxer engine for my buggy. VW didn't make one of those (and if they did it probably wouldn't be economically viable for me in OZ). Even the after market couldn't supply one (if I had the money). I also couldn't justify the sort of money needed to get a powerful, reliable, efi, VW boxer engine. So I went for a Subaru. I'd like to think Subaru took the best of VW and improved on it when they designed my EJ series engine. That's the same thing all of us do when we modify a VW engine. I like to think people would try and understand the reasons why I did what I did and would respect them.
However, that doesn't mean they have to accept me into their club. The founding members of the club in question decided that particular things were important to them to make the club a proper VW club. Those things are written into their constitution. Anyone who wishes to join that club has to abide by those things and sign something to say they agree. Then the membership is legally binding. The man who is raising this issue in whatever club it is has a point and is right.
However, clubs are as much about people as cars. And, if there's no people, there's no cars. I'd like to think that the club (and the man) could come to an agreement about these sorts of issues or form a special section for people like myself who have chosen, for very good reasons, to use engines other than those made by VW.
And its amazing how far a little kindness and understanding goes. After all, the Volkswagen is 'the people's car'. :kiss

I understand the reasons behind the jap engine conversion. I've done a couple of them. But that doesnt change the rules of the club. If they are there in black and white, thats it, debate over.
How many people with twisted knickers are from the particular club and how many are having a rant?

I am from the particular club, and I own one of the offending vehicles.

The point was!!!!
The constitution states that the vehicle must have an engine manufactured by VW,
When is it still manufactured by VW??, when it could have an after market crank etc.
I have no problem with the rules but who deceides when to follow the rules and when not to???.
Cheers
Dave

Spose it depends on which part of the engine you want to count, doesn't it?
All sounds abit too hard to me. :duh
Maybe you need a constutional referendum(b) :thumb
barls ·
how about a senate inquiry? we havent had one of them in a while
amazer ·
Well I would say that an aftermarket crank would be eligible. Apart from the flat 4 configuration a subaru has nothing related to VW. There is a bit of a difference between an aftermarket crank and a jap engine. It is a VW engine with a different crankshaft. But its got nothing to do with me. I still say that the discussion on here is pointless and irrelevant. Take it to the club meeting, call an extraordinary meeting, debate it there, whether it be to uphold the original constitution, clarify it, or change it.

THAT CLUB HAS LOST ITS MOMENTUM TO BECOME ONE OF THE BEST CLUBS IN OZ, THANKS TO A GROUP OF NOB JOCKEYS!!!!!!!!!!
vwtyp2 ·
It'll be interesting to see how well the club can navigate now with it's head up it's ass.
there's quite a few disgruntled members after wednesday's A.G.M.
:cry:cussing

The person who is always quoting the constitution, stated on Wednesday night that you couldnt own a Holden with a vw motor cause the constitution states it must be a volkswagen.
But the constitution states, Definition of a volkswagen: ANY vehicle powered by an engine manufactured by vw.
This is why the club is going down hill, too many people who think the club is theirs and decieding what rules to follow and who has to abide by them.
I did over here one person ask this founding member if he was still allowed to be in the club as his engine was manufactured by Autocraft??, the founding member said " yeah thats alright as its a volksie motor", is it because this person donates a lot to the club??
"me being a cynic again"
Autocraft is as volksie as a suburu.
Sorry if this is boring to other people on this site but it is very important to the members here in S.A..
After Wednesdays AGM, I bet we will see a couple of breakaway clubs.
I for one have not rejoined the club and cant be bothered with it all.I dont need the bull s#!t.
I will just do my own thing and meet up with other like minded people who also think we dont need the club.
Thats all for my rant.
Cheers
Dave

Any vehicle powered by an engine manufactured by vw.
Now if we were in court many lawyers would be interepreting this one in different ways...
1. ANY VEHICLE powered by an ENGINE MANUFACTURED BY VOLKSWAGEN
--- A Volkswagen powered Ford Laser is any vehicle powered by a VW engine
2. ANY VEHICLE powered by an engine MANUFACTURED BY VOLKSWAGEN
--- A Commodore engined kombi is any vehicle manufactured by Volkswagen powered by an engine.
If people are sloppy writing a constitution then interepretations are legal. Time for ammendments either way....

its alright we all have to have them some time dont we? its good for getting the frustration out

Where to draw the line? this is always a problem for any desicions of purity.
But the answer is always at the same place. the beginning. what was the original design parameters. a 4 wheeled independent suspension AIR-COOLED motor with a seperate chassis and a airflow designed body. Now anything that has these items and a factory stamped number on it qualifies as a pure vw(engine internals do not matter as we do do not scrutinies internals, but would eliminate autokraft/scat blocks). This covers all factory production and coach built bodies. I am sure that the Rolls-Royce Club (now owned by VW do they quailfy)would not welcome a holden powered roller to their club even though they sold bare chassis and engines to coachbuilders. This does not mean that the other members with modified vw should be excluded but could/should be affiliated to the original club and share the vw experience with the original members. anyone who thinks that the n.b is anything more that a marketing idea is kidding themselves, the amount of wasted space to fit the concept body is a joke. just my 2cents worth no offence intended.

Well that rules out all the water cooled (VW boxer engine) transporter owners too. I'm sure they'll be thrilled about that. NOT!!
Oh and what about the guys who deliberately put the water pumper boxer engines in beetles to stay loyal to their club and VW badge? What about if I choose to put Subaru water cooled heads on my air-cooled cylinders? It's been done you know.
It's the same ol same ol, "oh no...change! we can't have change!"
Half the reason people do up cars is to be different. Kick out all those people and I reckon there'd be 2-3 purists max left in every club. Maybe we could make all the purists join one club together and then they could all suffer eachother and grow up abit.
VWs changed over the years you know, It's ok for us to as well.
......snussin rushin, people with small brains.......😠
P.s. If you wanna know what ticks me off, it's people who put Beetle bodies on front engined chassis with a V8 in them and then pretend they are doing something different. Freakin meatheads! Sorry about that I was just blowing off some steam.🙂

...so when the body on our short wheelbase early patrol is too far gone and we put a beetle body on it because it's the same demensions, does that make us "meatheads"?

All this argy bargy about what is a VW and what is not and the debate between air cooled and water cooled is just too boring for words !!!!!!.... Why don't we all just join hands and celebrate our VW's ( oooh this makes me sound like a hippy !!!!!). To me being a member of the VWCV means that I can meet up with like minded people. You don't have to own and drive a VW to be a part of the spirit, it is all in the heart not in what is in the garage !!! (I think that I need to lie down after spinning all that crap !!!!!!)
Interesting quote...

I know everyone has their own opinion, but KEEP it to yourself ! I don't write posts on this forum to upset others and I would appreciate it if people had the same respect for me and other watercooled owners. Sure there are some VW's that I hate but I keep that to myself and I would never post on a forum that I thought that X was crap or whatever.

No it doesn't boozer, because that really is different. 😉
I was talkin about the drag racing crowd and the usual predictable machines that seem to surface there. After all, if you put a 500 cubic inch motor in anything it's bound to go fast. Sorry if I offend anyone, that's just the way I see it.:o
P.s sorry for getting off topic 🙁
