The doglegs have been cut out & also the passenger floor but we forgot to get the repair panels beadblasted as they are powder coated.....so hopefully the beadblasters can squeeze us in over the next couple of days.....😠

The cargo sill was full of rust(aren't they all!!!!!!!!!)so out it comes & ready for the repair panel............

Wow..that looks pretty neat...what are they working on here? Is the angle giving them better access to that side they are on?
Mandie give us a pic of the other side where that big window was cut out on the panel...can they put window pillars in so you can go for a more standard window? Have they given you any ideas at the workshop?

All the windows are not standard Jen.....I'll see if i've got a photo of the big one though.I don't mind them....makes it a little different but just might make it harder to get some sought of popouts installed,if you know what i mean.I think i need to have at least one of the back windows open just for fresh air if you're travelling in the back.I don't want it to go back to a panel either so we'll see what i can do!!:thumb

Just got my hands on a bulkhead coz as you can see from the pics the tyre holder had been cut out.So i've just about sourced all the repair bits i need now.:thumb

From this angle that window looks about the same size as the sliding windows in a caravelle. if you measure it up someone might check it with their caravelle window. mine doesn't have the slider but I think it is the same size.

Kombidog-we need to be thankful that we still have the ones with that sort of damage done to them-imagine how many have been squashed for scrap.About 12 months ago I was going thru Pt Augusta real early one Friday morning on my way to Adelaide when I spotted a split Single Cab ute on top of something else up against the fence of the wrecker.I checked it out and it was a really good project(probably on a par with SC"s Van) I was due to go back thru Monday afternoon so believed I would be able to own the car of my dreams.I was late going thru on Monday and they were shut-But B4 my eyes was an almost bare wrecking yard and one of those mobile crushers.Guess what was missing.I rang him next morning hoping that he had spared it-no such luck.He was quite proud that he was getting $25 a ton for the scrap.Doing a quick calculation he got about $8 for the ute.I remember telling him how valuable Kombi stuff is.So I rang him this week looking for a 2lt Kombi auto trans and guess what-he had one with a motor as well but crushed it about 3 months ago.What can you do with people like that.

Yeah he took afew weeks off to concentrate purely on my splitty.He does lots of work on beetles mainly & a little on his own splittys but this is the first splitty he's done from bare metal up.I'm really happy with it as i've said.Theres about 2 more weeks body work....1 week of all the little fiddly bits like the doors,the little rail bits where the windows slide in & just general little bits,then about a week to just straighten it all up ready for the primer.I'll probably have to wait a couple of monthe then to save the money for the paint job.

heres an idea creative sell small window frames for samba conversions, so you could give your bus the samba tratment ,that would be cool. and also i read a previous post on valla about a guy doing those side safaris for bays , wouldnt be to much different on your bus:beer

I'm going to keep the poptop coz we go camping alot & it just makes it easier to stand up in & move around.I fell in love with those side safaris when i saw them on that bay at Valla,it was exactly what i had in my head that i wanted to do with my windows.Just gotta work out how they attach to the framework or put some sorta frame work inside next to the windows coz at the moment its just the sheet metal coz it was a panalvan.

Dave,i have no doubt purple will look great & i fully intend to do whatever i want as i have done the whole time.I've wanted a split since i first started driving Kombis 10 years ago & i can guarentee i will be smiling for a hell of a long time once shes on the road.........even if she is a converted panel!!!!!!!:P
Da Wiz,i've probably spent about 7 grand so far.Thats beadblasting,all rust repair panels,all body work plus afew accessories like bumper overriders & towel rails(which are heading to be chromed....mmmmmm!)mirrors,lenses etc....oh yeah also includes the mechanical work i had done as the bus ran when i got it so just had afew things fixed & a bit done to the brakes etc..so once shes painted & put back together the engine can be put straight back in & she'll be ready to go.
Thanx everyone else for you're kind words,it really is a labour of love & regardless of the whole panelvan with windows debate etc..... which i must admit was really getting me down,i really love my bus & can't wait to get her on the road.:kiss

Hi - great picumentary of the splitty reno - very inspiring.
We just bought our first Kombi (not a splitty - a '79, 2 litre) from a friend and are just getting down to cleaning it up a little, but one day we hope to have our kombi dream like you!
Do you have the original engine and gearbox in yours? It wouldn't be very big would it - 1.3 litres or something like that? - 1.5? Are you planning on rebuilding that too? 🙂
Would love to see some completed pics when you're finished. btw, you've just provided the inspiration to go for the colours that we want (rather than staying original) on the lower half of our bus!

Pretty_Blue_Bug you're right the photos really don't do her justice.Stu has done such a great job(as with your beautiful bug) that its hard for me to believe its the same bus,he really has helped make my dream into a reality.As for a trophy winner,well the fact that shes a converted panel probably takes her out of any running but i can't say i've ever really considered it an option anyway as from the very start this bus has been what i wanted,real windows or not & i will proudly drive her loving every minute of it.
Tomnseals the engine is not original as its a 1600 twinport but all the mechanical work & brakes were done before i had the body work done & we put the engine back in the other day & she started first go so i was very happy about that.So it will be cool once shes put back together she'll be ready to go.I'd like to upgrade the engine maybe to a 1776 at a later date but my main focus is to get her looking good & back on the road as her engine is & once the bank account recovers maybe think about a little more power!!!!!

Jimmy my bus is a 67 & a friend i've made through the vw scence has done all the body work & painting for me.
I haven't really asked Brad what he thinks Jen.Maybe he would need to see her to get an idea.Its funny coz i've always known exactly what i wanted the exterior to look like but had never really thought about what colour i wanted the interior.spose i better decide soon!!!!!!

brad seems to be a good guy,
i have sent him all my material for the front seats of my bus (almost done) i still think its alittle strange sending all my gear to vic from sydney but hey just check out his cars ,that with his combined love for the dub id say there would be noone better for the job. also most trimmers wont help out with the design because if the chance of you not liking it, but brad will throw you ideas to work off and give you more options , i am sure at heart you know what will work for you, just go for what you like

If I had a Kombi that awesome purple and white, I'd want the interior the same colours: deep purple leather seats, dash area and carpeting..... and white everywhere else. With some silvery shiny bits wherever they can go too!! The dark coloured seats wouldn't show dirt like white or light colour would, neither would the carpet. And the white everywhere else would not make it so dark looking. But, that would cost many many $$s..... 😉

nothing better than seeing another bus come to life again , i really like the roof , its great fun to see every little job get ticked off the list , just when does the list end, the mind boggles with how many little jobs there are to do on a resto , days of work that seem like you have done nothing , in the end though its all the little jobs that make it special.
hopefully one day we can park together, if we ever recover from the massive amount of cash needed to do a bus like this . its a credit to you and the builder
one question , how many times have you opened and closed the safaris? let me just say it doesnt get any easier you see them you just got to open them one more time to make sure ..

Yeah t2 i'm a little addicted to the safaris,they are just soooooo cool,actually i think i'm just a tad obsessed with the whole bus,shes all i think about almost all day..............just dreaming of her finally being on the road.Yep i guarentee i'll be cruising up your way maybe next year so our busses can meet & admire each other...lol!!!!!

my trip down the coast didnt go so weellll. the brakes failed just after geelong, shit myself but managed to get to winchelsea using gears and the handbrake, not happy considering those brakes were only done about 50 kms ago!!!! i should drive it more. talk to you when i get back from the states.

This is the first time I've checked out your post why? Well I know what its like building a car from scratch take my oval months and months of work/money and what seems like little change. I'm at the pre rub down stage of the body work at the moment and I just want to see some color but not wanting to rush anything at the same time, I keep telling myself that it will be worth it in the long run. Now my car is only a bug so I know how long a split is going to do properly as I used to own a badly restored 59 semaphore camper, and its a lot of work just to give her a tidy up new coat of paint never mind bear metaling it inside and out. So with out meaning to ramble on to much I've on purpose not checked this thread (as I'm inpatient at the best of times )as now I have just read through it enjoying every coment and progress shots knowing that I won't have to wait as long as the other very encoraging people on the site have to see her rolling down the road with a big smile on your face.
Good on everyone for supporting mandy with advice and better still good on you mandy for sticking to your own gunns and making your dreams happen

Thanx Nick,it really is a dream come true & i've certainly dealt with some negative people over the restoration time but along with the negative i've had lots of positive comments & people cheering me on as well.So thanx to those that can think outside the square & appreciate something a little different😀
When i check through this thread from the beginning she really has come a long way & its hard to believe shes the same bus.Still have little parts & pieces i'm searching for so you'll see me at the swapmeet next Sunday rummaging through everyones boxes of stuff.:P
However I can see the light at the end of the tunnel & all going well & finances permitting, me & my girl will hopefully make it to Day Of!!😉

a technical tip Mandy on photos. when you have a photo saved as jpeg!!!!! if u open and close it, even open and close it just to look at it, it loses quality. so my tip is save the photo as a tiff. file
format and you can never lose. Jpeg is given to the whole world
so you can send in e-mails, on floppies etc.....to keep the file...kilo bytes(kb) mega pixels down to minimum....so in a nut shell, jpeg is a compression format. Squashed the information even smaller. thus lose size and quality. ekim..

Are you going Safaris or standard front windows coz i must have my original window glass around somewhere but like you its probably really old & might be best trying to get new stuff.
As for the floor in the back,i haven't decided 100% yet but i think i'm leaning towards the black/white chequered vinyl flooring.I think it would probably look great with the purple & white.That carpet sounds cool for yours.How long till yours will be on the road do ya think????
I took my canvas in tonight to get redone for the poptop & the lady was really cool,so hopefully i'll have a new groovy canvas in the next week & a half........i just want to drive her soooooo bad,especially when its a beautiful hot night like it is down here tonight,it would be great to open the safaris,pop on some tunes & go for a cruise.hopefully not to much longer to wait.👍

Mandie, she is the living proof that window conversions are uber chic. The chrome trim around the windows is another piece of stylish bling (is there any other?) and has got me thinking. It would be a lot easier than finding a microbus and doing all the hard yakka again, I might just go down the conversion trail.

The VW spy council of Australasia (VWSCA) was out and about in 35 degree heat and found someone getting rego....I checked this unit out, it proves correct. My new German Leica Camera had no problems taking the picture. It found it to be of the same origin. ekim... ps. i will see u around again i'm sure, seen u at a market last year i think but with the council strict code one cannot break. I am not the person to push myself into anyone’s face........... I got kind of busy myself at Burwood Vic roads picking unrego permit for my L model(see avatar) i picked up, after not having a Volkswagen for nine whole years. You must forgive me but the kids wanted a luxury V8 Benz for that time.........I hope to set up a website for the spy council in the near future. I ride my bicycle around Melbourne taking many photos for them. Now those imported consortiums of the like of (hoodride) have hit the city, one must wonder if the face of originality is in question.
