Are you sure your speedo is reading right, and you're not actually doing 90 when your speedo reads 110.
barls ·

The 4WD thing is scarry cause generally the brakes on those big things are shit compared to passenger car brakes.
Keep a cool head!
Boozer ·
...uh I didn't say that.

However, if you are going slower, I think it is important to be polite and pull over to let the faster people pass when you have the opportunity. That's what I do with my bus.
Chill out everyone.:thumb
Bugged Again ·
The number on the sign is the maximum allowable but for some reason most people think it is the required speed.
In an 80 zone you should drive 80 which is bullshit you can drive 60 if its not endangering anyone, 40 might be a bit dodgy.
If they drive up your bum just slow down even more, that really pisses them off and when they finally get past give them a friendly wave.

Dr L the 70 Type 3 is OK..he can hold his own on the road...but Bel the '58 36hp Type 1......they hate her....
Very scary sometimes entering a freeway as well, with some of the aggressive drivers .... and I'm not an extra slow driver by any means 😠
If someone is pissing me off when I'm in the Type 3 I have been know to slow my pace down, especially if I see I'm going to have to stop at the next set of lights anyway.......I make sure the pesky car is positioned next to me at the line.....and I beat them off at the lights!!!! :thumb
Nothing like see all the cars sitting back behind you sometimes....then I slow my pace again to look after Dr L ....and we both gloat to ourselves
I don't do this often...don't want to hurt the Dr ....and better fuel economy ....and don't want Mr Plod after me

I was behind you at a set of lights in Geelong on the cruise on Sunday and BOY did Dr L move off the line quickly !!!!

Those who do stick to the left often don't let people in and out of the freeway.

I hope I never get stuck behind Kurt on a single laned road. :cussing

I think that was at a stage where the group was getting well ahead of us due to all those out of sinc traffic lights through Geelong...and there were lots of locals tootling around and splitting up the group....:cussing
All those wannabee Vee Dubbers joining the line up 😀
Geelong's a hard town to get through as a group....been there twice before cruising, and it always happens🙁

It is very frustrating if (now in the Type 3) you get three lanes with cars doing the same speed and below the freeway speed limit....no one seems game enough to be the one who overtakes and moves in front of another ....These people often frustrate the aggressive driver and them they start takihng risks and cutting other people off trying to get around:jesus
On Melbourne's city end entrance to the Eastern Freeway you havbe 3 lanes...(now in the 36hp Type1).....You have yourself in the slow left lane...but almost immediately to you right there are two lanes of very fast aggressive drivers coming on from Punt Road...Arghhh!!!! Well after nearly shitting myself a couple of time here, I choose to enter from Punt Road ...Not my fav choice cos don't like being in Punt Road and it's usually less direct from where I'm coming from
Purple Martin ·
When you're driving up the east coast on a single-lane bit of road, and you're stuck behind someone doing 10K less than the limit, then when they get to a two-lane overtaking section they speed up to 10K over the limit and you can't quite get past them, then as soon as it's single lane they slow right down again and you're still stuck behind them! They do this over and over at every overtaking section!
:cussing
aggri1 ·
I noticed that the overtaking lanes are quite often on the uphill sections, which is great, 'cause that's where the old bus can't (physically CAN'T) do the speed limit.
Yes, courtesy is required on the part of both the fast and the slower drivers. There are so many stressed out people out there. They need to ... simmer down... (that's a ska classic, that is.)
bobupp ·
Attitudes to me when driving yary. When in the beetle everyone wants to go past me no matter how fast I am going. Same speed, but in a different car, no problems.
The only exception is other beetle drivers. They always wave to me when I am in the beetle.

The worst on the highway is all those who think that merging means putting your blinker on and changing lanes even though there is 500 meters left to merge in. merging is merging not changing lanes.
But just as bad is anyone sitting in the right hand lane on the freeway doing 110 in the zone does not mean you should be there ,if anyone is sitting in the Right hand lane they should be overtaking. If I wish to do 120 in a 110 klm zone its not up to them to be in my way in the right hand lane. Move over so i can pass.

...Oh...and the Lane issue....I've had to go fast in the slow left hand lane to get past the slow drivers in the fast lanes ( talking about the Type 3 again here 😉 )
But I do get a thrill out of showing them up in their new...could go faster if they know how to drive....cars :thumb

Australian freeway speeds are patheticly slow for modern cars. I don't mind driving at 100 km/h even if it's wet as long as the roads are relatively empty. Therefore, I have no objection to everyone doing the speed limit on freeways. The people doing 80 km/h need to stay in the left lane and we're all happy. The people doing less than 80 km/h need to go another way as they're a provable danger to themselves as well as other traffic.
Above 80 km/h you're allowed to overtake on any available lane. You have to keep out of the right lane unless overtaking, irregardless of signs. Above 80 km/h on multi-lane roads, you're allowed to pick *any* lane you like, except for the right one (except in times of congestion).
Below 80 km/h, you're only allowed to overtake in the right lane.
At all speeds, if someone is overtaking, you have to allow the other person to overtake. If this means slowing down, then that's what you have to do. It's five demerit points if they speed up.
People who tail gate or flash their lights can lose 5 demerit points.
See the VicRoads web site for part 11 of the road rules for all the gory details. All states have essentially the same road rules now (except Victoria, where you're allowed to U turn wherever you damn well please).

The F3, F4 & M5 have a lot in common, that's why they call the central coast, "Mount Druit on sea" or Mount Druit with seaguls
This is a list I made.
Things that piss me off while driving
1) People who are unable to merge.
2) Drivers who park near the end of a parking zone and leave ½ - ¾ s of a space vacant between them and the parking sign, they are in affect using almost two car spaces.
3) Fog lights, marshals should be equipped with hammers to smash offending fog lights when they are not being used at the correct time, like when its foggy.
4) Dogs on drivers laps, should be instant loss of license, they obviously think that having air blown over their pets face is more important than driving, this is easily spotted, just follow someone doing this and see how badly they negotiate roundabouts etc.
5) People stopping on service station aprons, how often do you see someone pull into a service station apron or side street and stop, leaving the rear of their car hanging out, they then have a look around before proceeding, meanwhile everyone behind them has to stop suddenly or change lanes.
6) Roundabouts, some people just don’t understand the physics of cars on the other side of the roundabout, they cant possibly run into them when they are on the other side of the round about, so why stop and wait for them? The law says to give way to cars already on the roundabout, but if you can make your turn on the roundabout without causing the other driver any problems, just go!
7) M5 off ramps at Kingsgrove and Bexley Roads, what engineering giant decided the off ramps would come off to these two roads from the right hand lanes? What this causes is people wishing to leave the M5 at these off ramps to dawdle along in overtaking lane well before the off ramp so that they can be sure to make their exit without having to change lanes at the last minute, this is despite laws and signs saying “keep left unless overtaking”.
8) People who don’t obey “keep left unless overtaking” signs.
9) People who pull out from a side street, service station etc and don’t accelerate to the speed of the traffic.
10) Red filter arrows, why can’t you turn if the road is clear and it’s safe to do so.
11) Drivers while looking for an address dawdle along holding up traffic behind them, they should pull over and stop, the minute another car is behind them and then when the road behind them is clear resume their search.
12) It is my belief that it is everyone’s responsibility when driving that they should not make any other driver take any evasive action as a result of their actions while driving, apart from slowing or braking for traffic.

Driving is following ...Like a bank queue...or the supermarket line, You Keep Up, you dont push in and if you bump trolley's say sorry......
How can some people, be so self important, that they can leap frog through traffic, pushing in and causing stress and bother to others ?
If they behaved like this at the footy queue ???
Or at theBar?
With distinctive vehicles like Ours, we have to pull our heads in. Some one you pissed off will see it parked one day, and give it a kicking

You know I always used to think (before I got a kombi) that every car would respond in the same way when you put the pedal to the floor, and each car would accelerate in roughly the same time. This was before I started to drive a crappy old Toyota Tarago and now my kombi (which I love driving, I might add).1302Steve wrote:9) People who pull out from a side street, service station etc and don’t accelerate to the speed of the traffic.
I thought as VW drivers you would all have some understanding of this. Not all cars respond the same way. I remember times when I would sit in my Tarago and vocally urge my car up to the speed limit just so the person behind me would get off my ass. Some cars just do not have the grunt or power to do this (as I found out).
You all talk about tolerance on the road. I mean no offense by this (especially to you 1302Steve, just using your comment as an example) but you should all understand, when it comes to a speed issue, that some cars just cannot physically do it! And its not the driver, its the car!
(I'm not referring to driving in right lanes or whatever, just people pulling out and being slow).
You can't justify being angry at someone because their car is so old and their engine has no grunt to get to the speed limit in your time frame (and I'm saying this as a person who used to get really pissed off at slow drivers).

I've had d1ckheads pull onto the highway in front of me with such little room that it was safer to overtake them on the painted median strip than to try and brake to avoid a collision.
Not every person, car or situation is the same, but we should all be tolerant of other people.
As Steve C said:

Dodge, in your case just wait for a bigger gap, my 1st car was 40hp bug so I know all about slow cars, my problem is with cars that do have the power but dont accelerate to the speed limit quickly. 4WDs are also bad for this. Barls I bet you wish you had a replay or undo button, but I too would like to hit an undo button when someone fails to acknowledge my courtesy.

I have noticed that people have problems with speed. Some people will go 70 in a 60 zone, but when it changes to 80 they wont go over 75. Some people will not go over 95 on single lane each way 2 way roads, but when there are two lanes on our side they will go 105-110, then back to 95 when the overtaking lane ends.
A lot of people are scared of driving in the left lane. The left lane is often the fastest, as the others are congested. Hehe Geelong freeway, start of last year I drove at 103km/h melbourne-geelong, only had to change lanes once to overtake a slow car (90) that was doing the right thing, all the other slow cars were in the centre lane. (I know that overtaking on the left is illegal, but its stupid not to use the lane if people refuse to move over)

I hate how its too slow to sit behind a kombi doing 10 kays over so they overtake to do the speed limit. Actually I get that when driving any car. I hate how sitting behind me at 110kmh is too slow, but sitting in front doing 100 is OK. Too many wankers in this country.
That is the best part of turbo kombis. The wankers move over to overtake 1 km before a hill, they get up beside you before they run out of steam, you wave at them to get in front but of course they they cant, so you give them the finger and floor it. Priceless.

The solution to the fixing the Commie, Falcon and 4wd owners is to have a car that seriously out performs there vehicle. Read European performance vehicle, withone of these you will really understand how crappy most modern Aussie vehicles are. Even most standard beetles will keep up with the modern cars to 40 or 50 Kph, this can be very pleasurable when dragging the off at every set of lights.
Another pet hate is small tin cars which dart and weave through traffic, just to get one car a head of you at the next set of lights. The easiest way to cure this type of driving behaviour would be to froce these drivers to cruise around town in a small under powered truck or van.

I think a lot of people fail to realise just how serious driving is. It may be enjoyable and give them a sense of freedom, but they're still operating machines which have the power to kill and do require a lot of skill to operate correctly and safely. It sometimes scares me that in the time it takes me too look down at the radio and change the station, something could have happened in front of me which could lead to a horrific accident.

Not trying to tread on any toes here but I find females in commodores to be the worst offenders. You can't travel infront of them.. they have to over take or sit right next to you if it's dual lane. (dangerous)
I live 50 k's from my girlfriends place and do alot of commuting from liverpool to penrith. Travelling via the northern rd is the usual route. And the new overtaking lanes that have just been finished seam to baffle the locals..
I have one month on my p's left and can't wait as it's basically a sign that says "Abuse me please i like it" when your in a smallish car.
I'd like to see retesting of drivers to become mandatory. The amount of old people I see driving and having minor accidents that arn't reported is quite scary. Also a more thorough eye sight test that includes night vision.. some people really go blind at night.
And further more.. I'd like to see a dob in a dickhead program.. citizens reporting idiots into the police when your tally hits a certain point you get fined (impossible to administor and to police but a nice idea i thought)

people who continuously beep me when going up steep hills...doesn't seem to matter if my 36 horsie is managing to do the speed limit or not...I do drive in the left (slow) lane for a reason 🙂
People who overtake me then move back into the lane very close and slam on their brakes...Heidi may drive slow but she don't stop fast!!
I guess its the basic attitude of drivers...they just want to get to the destination and get there fast...

There has been a stigma to being BEHIND a Volkswagen as long as I can remember & it obviously still exists.
As for Andrew's comment on the smell of the fumes of an old car, take a spin on a bike & breathe deep. New cars on premium unleaded stink, but LPG is the worst.
More of the problem is how people get a licence.
When I got my bike licence in 78, it was an oral examination & the same guy followed you for an hour.
Later I got a car licence- the exam was multiple choice & a clerk put a peice of plastic over it with circles where the answers were supposed to be. They didn't know if you were right or wrong, as long as their circles matched your crosses. Then another guy came for a spin with you.
For reasons I won't go into, I had to resit the test in 1990. This time it was done on computer & it said pass or fail. No human interaction whatsoever.
Even then, all these driving tests are done running around the city. Most people already had their licence BEFORE they ever drove on the freeway.
Highway running is self taught.
