well.. its about time i put my little beetle up in the members rides section. so here we go!!
this is my very first Vee-Dub who i love dearly, and has been named "Adolf" by my girlfriend..:jesus
i bought him about 14 months ago, and he was the very first beetle i went to have a look at (actually the only one) what i found was a pretty rust free, original beetle.
i dont really have any before/after pics, because he really hasnt changed much, only very subtle things so far.. but the interior looks a MILLION times better than when i got him, due to new carpet, and re-covering/padding the seats and what-not.
the plans for the near future, are, a wood-slat roof rack, lowering both front and back by about 1.5"-2" THICK whitewalls (2")

a D plate, and fender Stone guards, plus pretty-much any other cool looking oldskool/chrome acessories i can afford 馃檪
and a bit later on down the track some BRM's

Good looking car Mate. I had one exactly like it few years ago. It was a '69. Unfortunately, a stupid Harley rider hit me from the side while I was turning in a side street. Quarter panel was gone but there was also damage to the roof because of his high handle bars. Which made it too expensive to repair. The car was written off. It went great. I bought it for only $450 because it had problems with gears. Turned up to be only the vacuum box next to the gearbox. $140 later it was on the road. Served me very well for three years.

hey busser.. i ebnded up doing the front seats myself.. i warmed them up a bit w/ a hair dryer.. (no clothes dryer at my place, and too cold for the sun) and stretched them on.. few tears down the bottom 馃槧 but i'll live.. when i twarms up i'll stretch them properly, and attach them properly.. atm the backrests are kinda just sitting there.. i havnt cut the holes for the side levers either:| just using the bottom lever for the time being.

well i have bought another beetle.. a 69 1500 that is VERY LOW.. will be lowering Adolf with it's front ent, and 135's..
im afraid i STILL havcnt lowered it yet.. but will be in time for DoVW!!!
yesterday however, i went for a drive to Volkspower, and bought a bamboo parcel tray, some pre 68 indicator lenses, and some shiney bits for the pillars, and doors
images are DLing from camera, and i'll post them up in a few mins!!
i'v also re stood-off the decklid, and added a mesh visor, aswell as chrome door handles (inside) and some non cheap and plasticy window winders,, just little stuff

gave it a total cut and polish today at trade school, came up pretty good.. the paint on it is so bad 馃檨 we buzzed one of the guards down with 1500 on the machine, and cut over it.. so its the only smooth part of the car.. the rest is full of crap馃檨
but it's all shiney, and looks good from a distance 馃檪
next improvement will be some new running boards, then BRM's and red bands instead of white walls, then a decklid rack.. and i have a D plate on the way from the U.S

the white i used was sophia white, it was left over paint from a lancer i painted the other day.. really cleans up the side of the car, and makes it look longer.. there are a few runs i have to cut out today :| but im very happy with the overall job馃檪

reached my new record topspeed just over 140k's on the speedo.. then there was a truck in my way and i had to slow down for the dowwnward slope of a hill.. so i coulda done better lol!!

the alt and progressive weber have been sent away along with adolf to a makes place to be mated together.. and it's been nothing but trouble!
the alt stand wont go on, as my genny stand has an EXTRA pipe headed into the sump, think it's a semi-auto thing - think i'll just sell it.
had to have the manifold for the weber tapped to run the vaccume for the autostick to work, engineering joint took care of that,
and the weber was all corroded, it had been left for quite some time with fuel in it..
looked tip top from the outside, but FULL of rust inside..
my mate cleaned it out, and kinda got it running.. rough as, and it blows a foot long flame when u back off the accellerator. his garage has a scorchmark on the wall now (zoom tube)
it's now being rebuilt and getting some smaller jets! so im Dubless for a little while longer.. driving my nannas daihatus applause around :repuke

stickshift emblem came out in the first 6 months of 68 - the first year autosticks were made.. very rare.. i have only seen one other.. brought over from the states.. mine was chrome, but i painted it grey silver with a gold pearl

to be more clear.. the carb didnt get sent off to be rebuilt/jetted.. mate at work and i found the primary throat was the one clogged. which prevented idleing, would only run when revved high, as secondary throat opened up. we cleaned it all up, and tested with prepsol, both jets squirted properly.
the car is now running, but only on 3 cylinders at low revs. lead and plugs rooted.. will get new ones tomorrow, and hopfully pick up the car tomorrow aswell.
i have beentold it run, and really gets going.. but it does need smaller jets

well today was good news bad news day..
more bad than anything.. atleast it drives it how i look at it 馃檪

- fourth cylinder only kicks in with the pedal straight to the floor.
-jets too big - drinky drinky.. especially if u need floor it to get all cylinders working
-fuel lines had NO hose clamps on them (thank you volkspower:vader)
-leads look like theyve never been changed before (as above:vader)
-semi-auto solenoid looks like it is gonna fall from its mounts( im sure if the mob i used to take it to to get serviced gave a fuck this list would be shorted.. god knows i handed over enough dosh. and dean if your reading, where the fuck are my runningboard trim clips? still waiting for you to call)
-mate has his girlfriends brother's 20th b'day tonight

the alt stand couldnt go on, cos my genny stand has the fuel filler(normal) breather hose (normal), and then a solud hose into the sump. the alt stand didnt have this third hose.. and i don't think plugging the sump really works :/

well its been another day, and we've made a bit of progress..
carbie is on, running... but idleing at about 4k :jesus
and its SOOOOO LOUD! also not running an air cleaner atm.. need to modify my ram-flo, and hope it fits when i remove the stand off kit (to prevent water getting in the carb) otherwise it'll be a flat top K&N filter with stand off kit on馃檪
shifter shat itself at mates place..i drove from boronia junction to stud park in second or as it's called "first range"
after spening the last 2.5hrs on the shifter with my electrician neighbor we have it working again 100% might i ad 馃檪 i now have a far deeper knowledge of how the shifter itself in an autostick works.. how/what where and why it engages/disengages... only thing is.. since it idles at 4k, it fucking KICKS going from neutral to anything
REALLY needa book it in for a tune/re-jetting luckily if have all of next week off so if i could get some details off laura or eden, if your reading my mobile is 0433544929 if u sould sms me a name and number for the tuning guy, much love馃檪

have attributed the idleing at 4k to a air or vaccume leak, so will chuck these old munted leads back on, try start him up and find the leak before it goes into the shop for re-jet/tune
shifter is playing funny buggers again.. but in a different way now 馃檨 hopfully it was because of a lack of vaccume when the car started to run on 2 cylinders lastnight

once you get get of the initial monstrous hump of problems, you'll be able to fix anything that may happen to it in the future.. and since you did it yourself, you know you didn't take shortcuts. So that makes your car better than before you laid a finger on it.... unless of course you put it all back together and then find a spare bolt or two in the floor that should attached to something.... oops

adolf is running on all 4, idles after warmed up, and gear changes are smoother than ever, the weber, although not dyno tuned - just tuned to run half decent gives good accelleration all the way thru all gears making a much smoother ride. only downer is i have NO reverse gear. so car is sitting idle in the carport till i can find another transmission.
im also running my dissy without the vac advance hooked up i was advised to do this by mate at work, as he reckons the vac advance on an engine that isnt completley stock can cause pinging? i dunno how this is.. but the car drives great with it not hooked up - just advanced to compensate..
anyone got a tranny for me in melb???

well its 10 months later and im starting to drive the old fella a bit :|
new gear box was put in by tucker road. and after a few issues after getting it driving again a few months ago all seems ok at the moment.
over the next few days i'll be -
1 sorting out a grommet for air cleaner/carbie
2 fixing fuel filler so i can take corners without smelling petrol,
3 properly securing decklid,
4 getting that pesky spark plug to stay ( thanks chris:P)
5 looking at re-mounting control valve
6 maybe find a good rewireing kit, failing that just hooking up the auto choke again,
tidying up the interior but NOT washing him!
prolly chuck the sun visor on again too

tucker road didnt even look at the old box i dont think - i just gave them the one i sourced (80,000 OG miles on it) but i have got the old one still to have a muck around with. if i ever get the time or inclination 馃檪

took Me 6 months to get the car into gear????
was adjusting the wrong direction....
I have a brazillian weber [solex replacement] with no choke, and it worked OK in the winter...
well it still worked...!! lol..
I know a fellow with the choke piece to fit My Carb,
reminds Me I'll have to go and see him before next winter..lol...
I would like to lower the rear of My beetle one day, although it had air shocks on the rear when i bought it, so it may settle down by itself... many of the 1500 do settle.
I still have lots to do to mine too....
even though It just got passed for rego for the 2nd time in 10 years...
I'm putting an alarm in next.... I have numerous alarms here but I can't get them to work the way i want, so I'm using a DSE kit....
I really want an alarm that beeps and flashes when its turned on and off....
but I'll have to buy one in the future sometime....
My front tyres rub now and then, so its up the height or use 135x15 tyres....

It's pretty easy to get the nosecone, bellhousing and sump plate off. You should have a drain plug in the gear housing but damn the oil takes forever to drain out of it!
Probably better off chroming the "T" and wall mounting it!

i made the seal for aircleaner to carbie this arvo after entertaining the good lady yesterday arvo/today and devised a securing system a tad better than a bobby pin and some welding wire 馃槈
havnt done anything else yet though.. might have a tinker tomorrow morning if im awake.. otherwise it'll hafta wait till tuesdays working bee 馃檪
and chris i found a 13/16 spark plug socket under the house this arvo too LOL i had one ALL ALONG!!!!!
