i asume that you turn the key on and while "TAPPING" (don't hit hard) bush the starter button

"start" is as normal whilst someone is doin the tapping. the theory here is that the brushes in the starter may be worn and by givin it a knock with the hammer it'll maybe get em' workin as they should again....
is their any "clicking" coming from the starter when you try to start it normally?? or is their no noise at all?? may be a faulty solenoid on the starter or even your starter switch may be worn... try shorting the wires at your switch...otherwise short out the starter and see what happens.....
could be quite a few potentional causes........
