I’m discussed with the type of comments and language being displayed for all to see. The forum is there to be shared and viewed by everyone. Do we really want current or potential VW lover interested in the forum to perceive us this way? Those members, who will remain nameless, “you know you are” Should have a good hard think before there next posting on the forum.
I believe these individuals are bringing discredit upon the forum and the VW scene.
I’m interested to hear other forum users views on this.

here here i agree with this cause im trying to reduce my swearing, one down side to the forces, and if you dont believe some one is right its there opinion and they are entitled to it but lets not act like children. i get enough of that at work
CoopGirl ·
I don't care about the language but I am amazed at the way some people attack others just for expressing their opinion and then it turning into a "School Yard" argument.
I thought the forum was so we can all share our knowledge, opinions and meet other like minded VW lovers, and most of all..... to have FUN!
Some members need to grow up (mentally) and not think when someone voices their opinion that they are attacking them personally.
Well that's my 2cents worth.
VWFREAK ·
I agree, we just need to use a bit of common sence.
blutopless2 ·
cool.... so hurling s*#! (censored for eveyone's well being) at someone's car is acceptable...... i'll just remember to quote it as my opinion.
VWFREAK ·
I'm trying to raise a valid point, not have did at anyone.
blutopless2 ·
yeah... that's fine with me... is a valid point.. was making one too.

I guess the problem is (as is the problem with most forums / message boards etc) is that you can't read the persons face or hear the tone in thier voice when they make the comment and most people jump to the conclusion that they are being nasty.
I think Bone Collector was right in saying we need to use a little bit of common sence.
BiX ·
I agree, this should be a place to be enjoyed and ppl should think about how their statements may be viewed by others. no matter what is said and how it is said think before you type.

It doesn't take much to be a little sensible and sensitive.... Trust me, I have had to bite my tounge and hold back comments quiet a few times and that is definately not in my nature (I'm a mega bitch!!! lol), but I don't like to make enemies. You never know when you may need a helping hand and the only person that can help is someone that you have pissed off.

I agree there is far to much use of profanity on the forum. Nearly every post there is someone swearing. I personally don't like reading profanity and I agree that it reflects badly on all forum members as we basically condone it by not saying anything.
Don't get me wrong, everyone is entitled to an opinion and free speech and all that, but you don't need to use profanity to get your point accross.
Maybe we should start a poll on this, and then the Moderators can turn the filter on that blocks out profanity.
That's my 2c.
barls ·

Always remember that there are kids, grandmas, and sensitive people reading the forum. Don't use language that would be inappropriate for those people. Simple!
MickH ·
I agree....people should remember that this is a public forum and that "name calling" and "car bashing" should not have a place here. We all should respect others rides and lowering standards to express an attitude should be taken elsewhere ( the toilet perhaps and flush twice so it goes the distance). RESPECT has been lost???? No need to use obscene language to express an opinion. Some people need to grow up........and buy a buggy:bounce
Stealth ·
What people have to do is read the posts to enjoy them or not, it's up to you.
If there is a thread about an issue/topic that asks you for a comment, then go ahead..... do your best.
BUT..... there is no need for negative comments that you know will upset the originator of the post that was not warented or needed to comment on.
i.e. (post) "look at my nissan powered, baja beetle's new paint job"
Don't answer with ..........ah bloody baja's there all shit, i hate it when people do that to them or you just wrecked a perfectly good car putting water cooled into a bug! or It's not a real VW anymore..... you know what i'm getting at 🙂
The originator of the post wanted us to look at the new paint job, not to knock there taste in cars or modifications. Alot of people take heaps of time, effort and money to get there car to where it is, or buy a dunger for a couple of hundred bucks, but love it all the same....... so do us all a favour and keep any negative comments to a absolute minimum as it will only upset members about posting messages again.
Unless the member is asking for positive or negative comments about there posted topic, there is plenty of opportunity to do so then and debate the issues they posted about.
Also, please people don't get so bloody anal on certain topics regarding dates, years, models etc that some new (and old members) may not know about. Be constructive and explain there misinformation, not distructive, it just pisses members off. Like being corrected from a bloody school teacher (apologies to all teachers on the forum 🙂 )
I'm the first to get very upset at certain comments about a topic that i may post about, it's supposed to be fun and enjoyable, so take the time to think about posting replies and remember the originator of the post did not want (usually) a shit fight about the topic he/she put up.
Now join me in a big group******HUG******* :kiss

allow me to apologise for my use of profanity, i was just frustrated with the situation, which is of course, no excuse. however, i do maintain that i haven't 'bagged' anyone's ride. (although, i'd love to 'bag' my own, if you catch my drift 😉)
i would also like to take this opportunity to thank the mod or whoever it was that deleted my thread in member's rides instead of just deleting the few offensive posts in it, while all the other threads with similar sentiment in them remain. that was a great move.

Well said BLKBUG. This forum was a place of encouragement some time ago, and that was one of the many reasons it was made.
Unfortunetly, somewhere along the line, we have lost sight of that, and become bitter and selfish, and sometimes closed minded in our ideas and opinions.
Cray, your post has been placed in the 'Suspended Posts' section of the Moderator forum. It will either stay there, or it will be edited and returned back from whenst it came. I didn't move it, nor do I know who did.
As far as the language is concerned, we as a forum had a poll sometime ago that discussed whether we could turn the filter on/off, or were we all adult enough to use disgretion in our use of language.
I am guilty of cussing to both describe emotions or anything else. I think the Grandmas/ Kids/ etc. arguement is pitiful. If you are old enough to have an interest in VW's, then you are old enough to have heard such 'adult' language before, however indecent it may seem. After all, this forum is generally an adult environment, with the exceptions of maybe a handful of teenagers, and I am certain that they have heard/ read the language before.
It all boils down to common sense. Simple. Use it when you need to use it, and there won't be a problem.

A nice guide for posting stuff on forums I find is to not say anything that you wouldn't say to a person if they were standing in front of you. That and if someone posts something which you feel like reacting too, try to wait an hour or so (maybe even sleep on it), cool down and think before you post.
I've got into all out mud slinging with people via e-mail, forums and instant messengers in the past, and it's extremely unpleasant to the point where I managed to completely alienate two good friends.
Sometimes it's better to pick your battle's wisely and not get caught up over anything to trivial. By the way that's said only with reference to the trivial things I've got into arguments about in the (thankfully distant) past, not anything that's happened on here.

wow, i must have missed the "offending post"........
but this is an interesting thread....and one that has come up before in different forms (ie. what is/isn't ok to post on the forum.....nudity, swearing etc etc)
i am definately guilty of bad language......but i do try to contain myself...but any of you that have met me probably know that i swear a lot in "real life" and (hopefully) not in a negative way....i like to think of them as "adjectives" hehehe.
anyway, i agree with earlier posts on this, we are generally "adults" here, and guided by the same "social norms" here on the INTERNET as we would be in REAL LIFE.
what wouldn't be appropriate to say face to face with someone, shouldnt be tolerated here either (and by that i mean "bagging" out some body's ride or something, being nasty etc - just because you can't see someone's face doesnt mean they are "annonymous"........we all are real people with a shared passion for volkswagens....keep it civil, keep it clean, keep it out of the gutter - and that way we can enjoy a forum where we can all learn and share and all the lovey hippy-stuff we are all so into...eheheheh)
anyway, i apologise for my swearing, i will try not to so much in the future, oh yeah, and for my bad spelling too......
but i guess my point is, don't "hide" behind your internet-persona, the volkswagen scene is a small one, and one day you'll probably meet the person you have been bagging.
and yeah, try to abide by the normal "rules" of society, you know, not too crude, not too rude, no thongs or singlets heheheh......
anyway, thats my opinion for what its worth,
thor🙂

I think you have it all backwards people.
When the rules were mooted 12 months ago or so, I bought this up.
There are now some 2600 members on this forum. (ya did good young Jim).
2600 individuals, 2600 opinions & 2600 different ways of looking at something.
How the hell can anyone hope to be able to write something that will not be offensive or remotely percieved to be offensive to any one or group of 2600 people that you wouldn't know from a bar of soap?
It can't be done, & if you could do it you would acheive instant sainthood. But with me being an athiest, the sainthood would offend me & your back to square one.
Can't win, don't try.
And as I said then, you can't take away someones right to be an arsehole.
It's the people who get offended that need the attitude adjustment.
LIFE'S A BITCH & THEN YOU DIE........DEAL WITH IT.
I think the most amusing part of this thread is the statement at the bottom of Bone collecters posts.
It is well known that I'm no fan of water cooled VWs, & if you ask me I will tell you so. IF YOU ASK!!
I don't jam it down the bottom of every one of my posts.
Some folks should practice what they preach.

I agree that we are all adults here but reading some comments it amazes me how bitchy and nasty some people can get. To me the language is not an issue, I'm a tradesman so it comes naturally!
The issue to me is the lack of respect some people show to others and their rides or posts/opinions. The chatroom is a good one for it, a certain scavenging bird often seen at the tip is a good example.......
You can't slate people because you think you can hide behind your computer.
If you have a problem with someone, take up with them somewhere else, preferably face to face.
Chances are that most wouldn't dare!
The fact is someday you might meet that person and you'll look like a prize d...head when they are not what you expected........(read BIG)
Save red faces and as my good old mum says "If you have nothing to say then say nothing at all"
No need to kiss and hug, but common sense and decency is all that is needed........

Spook, you are incredible. Drving friggen trains for days at a time, probably more like months at a time, and manage to come back to this thread, which is right up your alley so far it is choking you.. incredible.
I recall the first time we spoke about this, (btw this is about the fifth time this has been raised), I basically said that I can't and won't have an opinion on this topic, as you may recall Spook. Well, bugger that now, as I believe everyone is adult enough to be able to handle it.
I agree with Spook, in some sort of calmer way.. I still firmly believe that you can't please 100% of the people 100% of the time.. One of the first things I learnt in Sales. Am I right Daz? It still just simply boils down to common sense, thats it. Some of us have more than others; okay, granted, but for christ sake people use ya heads and all will be fine. It also comes down to if the individual is opinionated. If they are, then they are going to be prepared for the backlash and aftermath of stating their opinion if it is so ground shaking.. If they are not, then they will nod, laugh, shake their head, growl and possibly even swear..
But it will not be typed.. It will be whilst they look at the monitor.
Imagine where we would be if people didn't have opinions? As a forum, where would we be? Wouldn't be much to read. Wouldn't be 2600 people ultimately. And they are only the registered ones.. You can nearly double that I reckon. What would they be reading if there was no opinions?
It is just how people voice their opinions, and sometimes we are all guilty of using language as an emotional expression of how passionate we feel about things, and under no circumstances should it be used to abuse people. Thats where we have been having a problem recently.
lobus ·
another way to look at it might be that there are umpteen threads multiplied by as many posts. There are as many opinions as there are posts. Some posts are gunna rub some other posters the wrong way, then away it goes.
However out of all that many posts the aggro / swearing / insulting / blasphemous ones are in the minor part of a minority. (I didn't look up the stats so that is another opinion)
It would be a bland old place if everyone agreed on everything I reckon (another opinion).
As for swearing; well sometimes I reckon it adds colour and flair so why not?

What do they say, you cant please all of the people all of the time.
If you dont like something, hard luck, we are mostley adults on this site and we have all heard everything, so get on with it.
I believe that the minority of minors who visit this site would here a lot worse at school! even primary school.
This is a forum for people to express themselves, so please dont try and tell us what we can or cant talk about or how we articulate.
Cheers
Dave.
My point of view and if you dont like it I dont care, cause its mine.
Mrs M ·
Well.... Ill put in my 2cents..... I dont think i have ever said anything i would not say to someones face but... can i can say that i use a lot more of the hmmmmm swearing words in person when i get carried away or annoyed. I dont use the words on the forum just because i maybe taken the wrong way but you can not change the person you have to accept them for who and what they say.
But even if a filter is put on the forum you are in a way your dictating what members can say and how they can express them selves.
You have a couple of options if you see something you dont like then DONT KEEP READING THE POST AND HAVE A SPIT sure put your opinion but remember that you may hurt someones feelings and expect something to be said back. The other is move on and get over it. Dont keep pushing your own thoughts across on someones thread. The next one is if you know the person that uses the type of words that you dont like reading or hearing then dont hang around on that post and skip it.
I agree also that no matter what someone says or writes it will never go over smoothly with 100% of forum members, as someone always jumps in and says something negative and had a dig.
I never saw the post about the BAJA Bug with the non VW Engine in it but hay if you are not going to say something constructive dont say anything at all in that instance as all he wanted to do is show his paint job.
I am probably woffling but its just my 2cents
I think all in all its a great place to exchange ideas and get to know ppl around Australia that have and love VW's and to find out what other people are doing.

Every time my Baja is in a Show, I over hear at least one or as many as ten negative comments about Baja's.
I also hear a lot of positive things about mine, but last year while I was on a Cruise Some body said to his mate, while he was looking at my Car.
I hate these ugly things and pointed at my Baja.
I turned around and said "who (F___ING) asked you DICK HEAD"
He didn't stick around to answer.
So I guess the Forum isn't that diffrent to real life.
I wouldn't say anything here, that I wouldn't say face to face. 🙂
Spook ·
And so the circle continues to go round.
This debate will go on ad nauseum because there isn't really an answer.
As Jim pointed out, this would be the 4th or 5th time this has come up. I have no doubt it will happen again.
What's changed?? Fuck all really.
Because there is nothing wrong with the way it is.
If you wrap the forum in cotton wool & make sure all posts are warm & fuzzy, you'll have 20 members left by the end of the month.
If we all had my 'fuck em if they can't take a joke' attitude, you'll have a different 20 members left by the end of the month, but 20 members just the same.
You need the mixture to make the forum.
The language; As I said I type like I talk. This is me. How many of those I met at the nationals were shocked & stunned that every third word that came out of my mouth was "four letter"? Or was it exactly what you expected?
I've not asked anyone to like it, but I really don't care if you don't.
The comments; For the most part I think the members show great restraint with their comments.
I"ll bet there is barely a person among us who hasn't written "I think your wrong" or "I disagree", when every sinew in their body was screaming - Will you get this into your pointy head you fucking imbecile!!!!!!
But no one actually writes it.
If you did, that's where the moderators step in & remove it.
By the same token, if you can't take criticism, don't ask people what they think. The only person that thinks like you IS you. Not everyone will agree.
This thread will disappear into obscurity, the same as every other one before it. Nothing will change.
There's no need to fix something that just aint broken....😎

I'm a member on another Car Forum that is unrelated to VW's.
Most of us on there have Met and know each other in real life. (face to face)
We swear and talk on the Forum like we would on the Street.
eg. Shut up tool, Get fucked, Your car looks like a Rice Burner and some C__T at a Work shop did a shit job and over charged me.
They call each other names, question there sexuality and even photo shop stupid photos of each other.
I often read things on that Forum and think that wouldn't last 2 seconds on Vee dubbers Forum without starting a shit fight.
But no body Complains and as far as I know nobody has been hurt, it's just like stuffing around at work.
If somebody says something you don't like about your Car, tell them to get Fucked. Or mind there own business, you will feel a whole lot better.
Or they could bash you, one of the two. 😉
Flying VW ·
I just thought of another thing, If somebody doesn't like your Car why cant they keep there OPION to them self’s.
I mean seriously, I have never walked up to somebody and said that what they think is nice on there Car looks shit, even if I think it does.
Or I haven’t said it out loud so they can hear it.
So as it has already BASICLY been mentioned countless times in this thread.
" If don't have any nice to say, than say nothing."

"If you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all."
Fair enough, but context is all important.
A sly comment out of context, should be kept to yourself.
But, as I type, here & now, there are two threads on the first page that ask for opinions.
This is where it gets interesting.
If you begin a thread with the words "what do you think", you had best be prepared for some sort of negative response as well as the positive.
The "anti" are as entitled to their opinion as the "pro" & THEY HAVE BEEN ASKED FOR IT!!
You can't directly ask for a persons opinion & then spit the dummy when they don't agree with you.
I couldn't count how many times it has happened though.
As I wrote earlier, for the most part, it's the people getting offended that need the attitude adjustment.
Don't ask for peoples opinions if you can't take criticism!
Your car is built to your taste, as mine is built to my taste, not the taste of others.
Fact is, if you like it, you shouldn't give a rats arse what anyone else thinks.

there is no problem with opposing, contrary, ignorant or any other opinion. I just get a bit hot under the dash when a post has a specific theme and some dumbster puts in the slaggoff..whether it is swearing or not..why can't those pple start their own thread? if they do it to get a reaction, well I'll provide one...then they get all uppity because I or someone else doesn't turn the other front guard..
do youse like my car anaolgies?

Oh, c'mon David - I was a dickhead. So were you (a bit). I don't think Lee was too much of one tho'. His comments weren't like "New Beetle Driver's are a menace to society" or anything. He just stated his preference in his own words on that thread. Most people would've just thought - "Ah the crusty old Bugger!"
and left it at that.
Here's the post again:
I'm sorry, but
I don't really like any Mexican made arses...
Especially water cooled ones........
Now - If he has been mouthing off and rude at places like Valla, then that's just not polite. This forum, and events are just as much about people as cars. That sort of stuff is just antisocial egodribble.
Anyway, Lee''s really helpful on the forum with tips and encouragement (especially in Tech talk), and I think it's a shame if he's crawled off somewhere because he couldn't deal with the agro.
If you have issues with him because of something else, maybe some U2U might have worked better? I dunno? I'm just a stupid crapper on-errer, so what does it matter? The whole action has been good for clearing up some hidden issues though, so good work I suppose David.
BTW - It's Martin in case anyone want's to talk to the guy behind the stupid name and avatar. And unfortunately I'm pretty much exactly like this in real life, so I apologise for all those people who will be forced to meet me at dub event's in the future.

:jesus [/quote]
BINGO!
"if I was talking about yours then you could be pissed...........like........your car is crap"
So why is it that every time someone mentions not liking a particular style of VW, those who own that style take it personally?
3 simple rules of life;
1) Not everyone likes you.
2) Not everyone agrees with you.
3) No matter how strong you think your case is, there are those that will not be swayed.
2 of the 3 will apply on this forum. (I don't beleive you can dislike someone if you haven't met them)
It is well known that I have no time for the NBs, but that's not to say it's Andrew's car or Anthony's car or any other ONE in particular. It's THE car.
Those who own them may disagree, but you'll never sway me.
Which brings me to Flying VW.
If this guy has said he doesn't like "those" ugly things, then he didn't really have a shot at YOUR car.
You haven't said if your baja was entered in this show.
This is important for the " who asked you". If your car was entered, then in a very real way, YOU asked him.
As for the "bring it on" crap, learn to control your temper young man.
You don't want to go where I've been.

blutopless2 ·
stating that you dont like the nb means that all nb owners will take it personally as this is their chosen car...
HotRodMatt ·
And saying you don't like commonwhores (oops, crapadores) means their owners will take it personally. There's a hell of a lot of people on here that drive those things more than they do VWs.
If someone says they hate NBs, so what? THEY hate them, doesn't mean that people who like them are wrong.
I hate brussel sprouts but people who do don't get upset when I say so. If this was a vegetable forum I'm sure there would be no people with hurt feeling if I said "I" don't like them. If I said "Brussel sprouts suck and anyone who eats them is a bloody moron" that would be a different thing.
The only people who should (or have a right) to take offence to someone saying they don't like or even hate NBs are the designers (or should I say marketers) responsible for them. Owners choose with their preferences and prejudices.
When I hear people say how they loathe bay buses I don't get upset or take it personally - hell I probably feel the same about their golf or their superbug!
KruizinKombi ·
Then that's THEIR problem.
I don't expect everybody to like kombis just because I do. I also own an International, but I don't expect anyone here to like it. Just to show I really don't care what other people think, I'm about to buy a P76. See how many people think they're a shitbox, then see if I care!!
I don't believe people should criticise other people's cars, especially on this forum. But in real life, if you can't handle people not liking your car, there's not much you can do about it.
I always told friends that the thing I liked most about the VW crowd is how I can go to shows and people don't criticise each others cars. I've been to a lot of other car shows and it just seems like one big testosterone-charged leg-humping exercise, with people all wanting to think that their car is better, even if it is still only an idea in their head. Within the VW fraternity (in my experience) people have seemed to appreciate what they liked about other cars, and ignored the things they dislike. I've always thought the VW crowd was more open-minded and accepting, but I'm starting to wonder....

i totally agree about the criticism
open mindedness??????????????????????????? are you taking the piss???????????????
hahahahahahaha.... this forum proves how "openminded" VW people can be.
HotRodMatt ·
I would think it quite open minded of an avowed VW fan to say they don't like one of VWs cars. Openminded behaviour requires the frank discussion of ones opinions and the courage to accept that people will not have the same taste.
Close mindedness is saying people cannot voice an opinion contrary to your own.

OK Spook you got me on the Plural. 😉
I've always said that you're intelligent.
There is alot of prejudice towards Baja's in Melbourne, I get it all the time.
The fact that I'm proberly the only member in the Melbourne club to own one and there is only about 3 others around says it all.
Recently at a Meeting somebody who was asked to speak about Bajas, kit cars and V.W Styles over the last 40 years basicly stood up and said "I hate them all".
(Yeah welcome to our Club).
I could go into great details of the trouble I've had with Baja exceptance, but I'm not prepared to open that tin of worms on here and it's been sorted out anyway.
As for the Bloke your asking about
I don't have a problem with constructive criticism, but I'm not going to sit by and listen to comments like " I hate these ugly things".
I guess you would need to be there to understand the context of what went on.
Since mine was the only Baja there and he had already looked it over, it's fair to say it was directed at mine.
And I know at 34 I'm a few years behind you, and I don't know where you've been. But believe me when I say I've been around.

Spook wrote:You haven't said if your baja was entered in this show.

Sorry Spook, I got carried away and forgot to answer.
No it wasn't entered into a show, it was just parked in a parking spot and minding it's own business after a Cruise.
There wasn't a show on that day.
Spook ·
My apologies, I thought it was at a show.
That being the case, your right, I'm wrong. Fuck him & the horse he rode in on.
If they have a problem with yours, the yellow piece of shit I used to own would really upset 'em.
The baja is like a yoyo. Be big for a while, die out, come back, die out again.
They were everywhere in the mid 70s, again in the mid 80s, then again 93 to about 96. I haven't seen one in Newcastle since Steve (bronze) went to Dubbo.
I got a kit under the house. When the circle comes round again, I'll be ready.
Then , of course, my country buggy is considered the epitome of ugly Volkswagens.
Criticism & bitchiness is human nature. You got no more chance of getting it off this forum than you do any other part of your life.
I can only speak for myself.
I am one of the air cooled brigade.
It's not that I like or dislike the water cooled cars, it's lack of interest. This goes for everything from the first Golf to the latest car off the production line. Although I don't mind the look of the early Passats.
My favourites are the split & bay kombis, the baja & the country buggys.
I don't mind the beach buggys but I wouldn't own one. I'll drool over a cabrio, but walk past a hot axe conversion. I can take or leave Karman ghias or Type 3s.
But having said that, I'll pull up & offer assistance to any VW on the side of the road. I have found myself under another mans kombi at 11pm on the F3. I have changed the tyre on an old womans Type 3.
My preferences don't come into it when I'm helping someone out.
I have given away more parts than I care to remember.
I have given the adress of this forum to everyone I have spoken to with so much a an interest in VWs.
In the end, that's what it's all about. Survival of the breed.
BenettonVW ·
Here here.. I just think there is plenty of other breeds out there, with an us versus them mentallity, so we don't really need it within our own circles.
I am with Kol. You like something on a car? Tell them. Don't like it? Why do they have to know? Have some consideration and human decentcy for other peoples feelings. All comes back to common sense, like I said on about page 1 of this thing..
That doesn't mean we should all think the same about topics, feel the same about cars and/ or models of cars.. gawd we should be grateful we have Volkswagens in common, after all, thats why we are here, or did somewhere along the line we forget that?
Imagine if Ice Cream only came in one flavour.. say.. Vanilla. You'd have people liking it or disliking it and having no option. Now think of what we have today.. Okay.. I hate rum and raisin.. Why would I say it though? Why wouldn't I just say "No, I much prefer bubblegum, or licorice, or iced coffee". Instead of 'Nah that rum and raisin is bullshit.. tastes like absolute crap, and everyone that eats it should be shot".
Be thankful we have a choice. Embrace all of the options, not disgrace them.

Hmm,
As with most things the common sense approach is the best way to deal with the forum. I have given people advice before about posts and emails. If a comment can be construed as negative or positive always assume that the originator of the post or email meant the comment to be positive. As has been said earlier in these discussions you can't see the other person's face. If people wish to be condescending or nasty then that is their problem. Swearing is a different matter. As has been also pointed out already this is a PUBLIC channel and restraint is needed.
I will shut up and go away now to do a bit of swearing 🙂
