The Kombi is in the NRMA workshop but they are too busy to work on it. Mandy & Steve have a place to stay, but unless it can be fixed, the kombi is getting towed to Port Maquarie on Wednesday

I wish i had of found some internet access in hicksville...oopps i mean macksville(just joking to anyone that lives in macksville) last night.
I think it would have been much easier to go to a vw place in Coffs.We're now in Port McQuarie after being towed by a not so chatty tow truck driver......all squished up in the front cab..how cosy!!!:blush
Can't seem to find anyone to help....its sitting at a vw dealer at the moment but by the look of the place it will cost a weeks pay just to open the engine bay.

Not sure whats wrong,she was cruising beautifully,sitting on 100 no probs until we hit some road works & we had to slow right down...she stared coughing & wanted to stall but i started going a liitle faster again & she was fine...didn't notice any probs as she cruised but as soon as i slowed down again she just wanted to stop...so she did ....she starts o.k but is coughing & sputtering quite a bit........she also seems to have a larger than normal oil leak??????

Rhys, 11CAB suggested the same thing. I checked them out this morning and all the rubber elbows etc seemed to be OK. I even managed to find that elbow which was missing off the tube on top of the air cleaner. Cheers for the help.

You were only about 10 minutes away from Pete Richards when ya went past the South West Rocks turn-off.
Try some of the club members there, someone is bound to know more about the "old style" engines than anyone at John Oxley VW (I assume that's where it's at??).

Heard from Mandie this arvo. They were enjoying the warmth in Port MacQuarie and about go whale watching. Kombi was getting repaired so they should be on their way back anytime soon.
Told them they would be better off stayong in Port Mac cause its bloody freezzin down here馃槈

Ok, apparently the kombi was towed to a VW dealership in Port Macquarie, found No.1 cylinder with no compression, & No.2 with low compression. I'm guessing they've adjusted the tappets and now have about 40 on No.1 & 80 on No.2.
But..........the mechanic has broken something???? Mandie thought it was the tappet cover or maybe the gasket, but this means they are stuck there another day waiting for "the part" to arrive......
Is there anyone in the area that might be able to help them out?

O.k.......so we are still in Port Mac.....not good news i'm afraid.
When the mechs went to pull off the rocker covers he broke the gaskets & they had none in stock & apparently tried everyone in town with no luck so they ordered some & they were to arrive tomorrow.Meanwhile we accessed some more of our RACV total care benefits(which thank god we had as the towing & all accom. is paid for!)& got a hire car in which we hunted down some gaskets ourselves & took them back to the mechs so they can at least put it back together & take her for a drive.
The compression in no.1 was 0 & in no.2 70 but after they adjusted the tapets it is now 70 in no.1 & 120 in no.2.So it looks like i nead a new head & we're not quite sure where the hell to go from here as far as getting the place where it is to fix it which is MAJOR expensive or possibly trying our luck to drive it to a smaller VW dude somewhere not TOO far from here & firstly hope it makes the trip & also doesn't do any extra damage!!

Little compression could be a valve/head leaking, or the piston rings are stuffed! Does it start OK from cold, and a bugger to start when hot? This is a typical syptom of worn rings. My beetle in Ireland has worn rings and a leaking head. I can only drive it about 15 miles before it conks out and wont start again. Wait 30 mins and let it cool down and it starts like nothing was wrong!

A funny thing happened the other day.......It seems we have a sensitive smoke detector in our motel room as when we finally got to Port the other day & checked into our motel,we were knackered & i got in my p.js & thought i'd make some toast before hitting the sack.so i popped the bread in the toaster & next thing i know the smoke detector was going off.Now i'm not talking normal house smoke alarm sound...this alarm is hooked up to the whole motel & it was like a fire alarm...sooooo loud.We opened the door & everyone was coming out of their rooms wondering what was going on & there was me in my hot pink flanny p.js,with toast in hand & my face a lovely betroot red saying "it was me but look this is my toast & its not even burnt!!"I was so embarassed....needless to say all further toast has been made in the bathroom with the door shut & the fan on!!!!!!!:blush

They can be sooooo sensitive...I used to manage in a low level aged care facility and the oldies used to the burn toast...often...some insisted on altering the levels...higher than our limit mark.... Tapes never work over the button...they can be taken off....
If it wasn't got onto in time e.g. windows flung open...fanning the smoke away with a towel.....then...fire barrier doors would shut.....people would be wondering out of their rooms...firetrucks would arrive.....and we would get a BIG bill for their attendance......
Despite our the aim of maintaining peoples level of independance for as long as possible....we had to take over the toast cooking in their kitchen areas...
Honestly the fire station must have gotten used to us there at one stage when the new smoke system went in... :blush

The mechanic in Port Macquarie assured us we would make it home if we took it easy and stayed under 90km/h, so we decided to delay replacing the head until we got home.
Dropped in to see Les in Taree yesterday (Barls dad) and thank him for his help. The bloke is a dead set legend. Even though he was booked solid he offered to work Friday night and Saturday to get us on the road if necessary. Thanks Les!
We left Campbelltown this morning and limped into Albury about an hour ago with the bus doing its best stall everytime we stopped for traffic. Fortunately the local VW mechanic, Paul, was willing to have a look for us just before he closed. Once again no clearance on intake valves for cylinders 1 & 2. By the time we get to Melb the valve seats will probably be riding up the front with us. With the clearances set to 8 thou we made it round the corner to Dave's place at Albury backpackers. Tomorrow will be the final 300km home, with some luck.

Heh all.......yes we're at Davids in Albury & all going well should be back home 2morrow.
The actual problem as far as we can tell so far is we have receding valve seats.......possibly caused by overheating a while back & possibly using lead replacement on long highway trips!!
Although we've had this hiccup towards the end of our trip I certainly won't let it dampen the fantastic time we've had & all the fantastic people we've met.:thumb
