UPDATED: Golde\'s ragtop.... (now with engineering details available)

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/27343/updated-goldes-ragtop-now-with-engineering-details-available

Golde60 ·

OK
here it is after many tries to get the images up.

this project was deampt up from the time i bought my first car - the 69er.
it was purchased when i was in tassie in april 02 (seems like a long time ago now)

will fill in the commentry on the progress as i add pics

Golde60 ·

Golde60 ·

Golde60 ·

Golde60 ·

Golde60 ·

this is how i found it after reading an ad in the tassie trading post for an oval window bug.
oval was sold, but the guy mentioned a ragtop that was in bits but rust free.

sounded good. so this is what a found.
a vw nut with a yard full of cars. new, old, half cuts, water cooled, projects.

the body was good, with only very minor rust in the usual spots.
i had to go back to melbourne, so my girlfriend (who was working in tassie at the time) had it trussed up like the provebial and shipped it over on the boat

Golde60 ·

once i got it home and looked closely, i found a few more rust spots.
was glad tho, cos the ragtop was a1 and other than a hit in the front, was straight.

missing guards, and other bits though. thats ok cos its gonna get the custom resto treatment.

Golde60 ·

nice and straight from the rear too

Golde60 ·

some rust: corner of screen

Golde60 ·

more rust: LHS pillar

Golde60 ·

was hit in the front too.
other than these bits, all was generally well.
needed a fair bit of straightening too.

jenz58 ·

Kim are you doing it all yourself?

We'll all be waiting to watch the progress :thumb

What colour are you doing?

...Melbourne's going to have some very nice ragtops driving around... 😎

Golde60 ·

then the car sat under a tarp in the back yard for a while til i worked up the courage (and the help)
bought a 63 which i wrecked
baremetalled the body and the pan (lost the pics of the body)
and PoR 15ed the pan.

Golde60 ·

nope jen

i have done alot myself. most of the bodywork and now the paint (woo hoo - its in colour) has been done by sasha at Delux custom restos

11CAB ·

Cool, nice early one too, is it a 58 or 59?

jenz58 ·

So the DOVW for you too Kim?

Where's Delux Custom Restos?

Do you have all the parts you need for the resto, or are you still looking?

....always a lot of questions 🙂

vw54 ·

Looks good for rust not too much

Golde60 ·

still a good chance for dotvw

progress is way past this, but i am slow to post pics

vw54 ·

Whats the body shell a 59 or 60 ??

Golde60 ·

shell no is 3051309

i have been told that its a 1960, and me checks have confirmed that.

there's been a lot of progress since then, but im gonna keep posting in chronologincal order.

Golde60 ·

the next pics are unfortunately some time later. (computer crashed so i lost all the pics of the bare metal body and the donor car)

18 months passed. finished uni, procrastinated etc.
by now the pan was painted.
body was baremetalled, and i had sent it off so my chosen repairer.

in the garage, after primer was applied, and on the rotisserie, this is what it looked like.

you can seen how good the body really was, with some extra repairs discovered, but nothing major.

Golde60 ·

you can see that its a good starting point

if you are gonna do a resto and want it done properly, this is the only way to do it - on a rotiserrie

you can get to all the areas and repairs are easier to do well

... not that i did them myself!

[Edited on 25-10-2004 by Golde60]

Dasdubber ·

Hey Kim, any more pics of the rotisserie? I would like to make something similar up for when I paint my beetle. Cheers - looking great by the way!!

Alan

robnjo ·

man it looks good so far...keep it up:beer:beer:beer

Che Castro ·

Wow looks a lot like my project, same year too! Except i got semaphores in mine.

That rotisserie looks really handy, i`m a bit jealous of the ragtop 😉

VWFREAK ·

Thants a top find

Golde60 ·

ok, time moves on and i have decided to fit an narrowed beam (this was about feb this year when it arrived)

got it done by mike at cbb and painted it up myself.
POR15 just like the pan

[Edited on 25-10-2004 by Golde60]

Golde60 ·

so after the chapel st cruise on saturday, i thought it was about time to post some more pics

these are pics from about april this year (sorry about the size) and i wanted to post so that the progress and amount of work thats gone into the body prep and paint can be appreciated.

first: we have the front pillar area prepped, with the rust cut out prior to repairs

Golde60 ·

check back to this picture later when i post some on how the inner guards were midified to make the narrowed beam fit

(cos i want to run shocks)

Golde60 ·

ok, here is the underside of the dash after high fill.
again, there have been some major changes in this area, so this is the before pic

thanks to alan (dasdubber) for the inspiriation. i m putting a stereo in under here to.
but dont worry, it'll look pretty different too

Golde60 ·

interior shots prior to any straightening/highfill

Golde60 ·

more pics of the bodywork as the layers of highfill were going on

ruckus ·

Hey Kim that looks awesome!
Shows the trade-off of having pateince and a firm vision of what you want in the end.

Anyone got the number or website for 'Delux'. Looks like they're earning some cred on this site recently

wezley ·

hey kim,

shit it's a small world, I went to uni with you for awhile back in 97 i think..

Might know me by anthony or wez..

Anyway, you were driving a baby blue beetle back then (I think) and it looked damn fine..

Hope your resto goes well, I just bought a Kombi myself.. I'm not sure what I'm getting myself into..

Good luck

Cheers,
wez

Golde60 ·

interior is gonna be painted, with as much paint exposed as possible, kinda like the standard split bug style

check back later

Golde60 ·

hey wez

welcome.
what year's your kombi?

its been a while.. the only times that we've caught up has beeen with annelise and the interior design crew

been a while

btw, ive still got that bug, gonna sell it soon to fund the final stages of this project

[Edited on 25-10-2004 by Golde60]

Golde60 ·

ok final shots for the night - before pics of the dash

gonna get some custom treatment here
the dash is gonna be done to match the flat4 gt steering wheel and the eliminator shifter that annelise sent back from japan for me

aint love grand??
:kiss

Golde60 ·

wezley ·

yep a proud owner..

http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=30068

^^^ that's the bus...

will let you know how it goes.. 😉

Golde60 ·

hey man - here s the bug (still got it) that you remember from the uni days

http://www.aussieveedubbers.com/forum/viewthread.php?tid=3304#pid90532

jenz58 ·

Wow Kim...great work....I luv to see what you guys do yourselves....you can be so proud of it..... Isn't it nice to get the primer on..to me it was like a milestone 😎

62deluxe ·

Top job mate. It will look awesome. Hope you have it at DOVW😎

[Edited on 25-10-2004 by 62deluxe]

Dasdubber ·

Excellent work Kim - keep it up mate, I know this is the hard part of the project to maintain motivation!

Che Castro ·

hehe looks great.

I bought an eliminator shifter when I was in Japan from flat4 as well.

They are pretty good, although not quite as tight as a berg shifter.

Golde60 ·

i wish it would be ready for day of.

but i have got to the stage that i dont want to rush it for fear of compromising anything....
.. perfection takes time

i think it will be ready for the end of the year though

damn, i hope so

still got some $ to spend!

Dasdubber ·

It's sad when you know your credit card number, expiry date, bank account bsb and account numbers all without having to think twice.

Makes you realise that these little german cars are great at absorbing lots of cashola! But they're worth it...I know your pain and pleasure, can't wait to see some more pics!

Golde60 ·

ok, so obviously a whole S H I T L O A D of work has gone into the prep work before the colour got laid.

thanks Sash - top job so far

and i do have many more photos to prove it.
but as i was going through all the photos that i have taken in the last 6 months or so, i got a little sick of looking at white (high filled) panels, and got really excited when i saw the paint going on for the first time again....

makes you realise how far its come.

so here goes

Golde60 ·

painted tunnel (gonna remain exposed like alot of the interior)

Golde60 ·

new wheels and tyres look a treat

major cred to mick motors here for doing the right thing by me and sticking to his word on the wheels

pan shot 2:

Golde60 ·

and yes, thats the shiniest inner wheel arch that i ve ever seen too on the left of the picture.

underside of body, interior and inner arches were all painted on the rotiserrie.
all the areas that were gonna be difficult to get to when the car was put together

here you can see some more of the inner arches and interior

this pic is one of the ones that you might want to refer back to an earlier pic for comarison. notice that the inner arch has had some meat taken out of it to allow for the narrowed beam to fit. means that i can still run shockers!
heaps of work in this mod, and most wouldnt notice it. even has the rolled lip installed back into it for strength.
factory style narrowed front!

other side, with sasha working diligently on the pan

rears got the same treatment

[Edited on 1-11-2004 by Golde60]

Golde60 ·

now for the underneath pics!

the saga continues:

Golde60 ·

eagle eyes will have picked up some more mods to the underside of the dash in the second last pic

gotta thank alan for the inspration on that one, although the theme is slightly different.

i have a black faced (stealth install, but didnt want to lose my glovebox) stereo that i want to dissappear from sight. so the mods allow for it to be set back from the face of the dash

also, you can see how much better a job you get when the body is painted of the pan. all that stuff that will never be seen. even the areas that will mount onto the pan rubbers got the treatment

Golde60 ·

here you can see some better shots of the stereo
looks easy now, but there was heaps of work in this mod

the stereo was done by carefully cutting a 'flap' from along the line of the skin under the dash and peeling it downwards.
then some triangular peices were wlded along the sides of the 'flap'.
some glass, a little bog, and some high fill later

sounds easy, but i can assure its easy to do badly and takes skill to make it look factory like this

Golde60 ·

anyone notice anything else odd about the dash?

i gotta go to bed. damn this uploading and linking of pics takes some time

more soon....

BenettonVW ·

Looking super sweet Kim.. Really coming along now!

Anything to do with the fuel gauge hole/ speaker hole? They don't look too normal, or maybe it is just me..

ikube ·

Looking good kim! I see some Empi's down there 😀 Excellent!

ruckus ·

Hey Kim are you going to be hiring out your services?
You could really drum up some business!

I'll be first in line, k? :P

Dasdubber ·

No probs for the inspiration Kim (dash)...it is cool to see it done another way (I wouldn't have thought of doing it like that but it looks awesome!). I know what you are saying when it takes a lot of work to pull it off correctly - I had some tough times trying to get it to look right!

Well done mate, I may have missed it but is the colour L11 pastel green (may be way off the mark).

Sounds like our bugs will be almost related - I am having lots of exposed metal inside, ragtop, dash mod, green (but different hue)....would look cool side by side!

Keep it up!
Alan
I am envious you have paint - I can't wait until I can lay some shiny stuff down for a change.

Golde60 ·

nah, ruckus. i cant take any credit apart from keenly observing and helping any way i can on the weekends

sasha from delux custom restos has been doing all the hard yards, with some help from andrew who looks after the mechanical side of the show.

i cant praise these guys highly enough.

sasha is a perfectionist and the product that you see in the pics is only this good because of his hard work

also gotta give a shout out to brad connell for the engine and doing the right thing by me when i discovered some probs as it started to get fitted up

just purchased the final load (not the first time that i ve said that) of vw bits from wolfsburg west.

still gotta spend cash on stereo, interior and some bits n bobs for the upright conversion on the t4

Golde60 ·

this is one of my favourite shots from this stage, which really shows the advantages of painting on a rotisserie

look at all that shiny stuff underneath!!!

Golde60 ·

theres alot more paint on there now than there ever would have been applied in the factory

damn its good to see these pics again....

.... makes me realise how much work has gone into it and how far its come

Unity-28 ·

Kim, its looking great. Cant wait till I see that on the road, and almost do my neck turning my head saying to myself "f#@k, look at that!"

Good stuff. N!

Che Castro ·

damn that is the shiniest underbody i've seen!

very nice and throrough!

Golde60 ·

yeah its looking pretty good so far

good guess on the color alan

more pics soon

VolksFolks ·

sooo shweet, love to see a resto like that looks sooo shweet,

Respect!

A

Golde60 ·

here are some of the shots of the interior, areas that are gonna keep the paint exposed

Golde60 ·

back seat

Golde60 ·

and some more of the interior
i wanna keep the areas that run along the inside of the roof gutters that are usually covered by the headlining exposed, and also along the front above the windscreen

gonna have to tuck the trim that will cover the ragtop assembly into this area somehow

should be fun!

Golde60 ·

and yes jim, you were right about the larger holes for the speaker/speedo area

i have been working on some templates for the dash that i have now completed in peruvian walnut (this was the best timber that i could find to match the flat4 steering wheel and eliminator shifter)

here is a picture of the templates in original form (5mm MDF) which i cut out with a jigsaw and them spent hours filing back to get the profiles to match the dash

Golde60 ·

thanks at this juncture go to nick for letting me cut the dash out of a wreck so that i could spend the next 3 weekends sanding up the templates

anyways, once they were sanded, the services of another mate (carpenter, not aussieveedubber) needed to be employed. thanks dave.

together we used the templates and some pretty trick attachements to his router and plunger and cut the walnut to the exact same shape as the mdf

(damn - i thought i had uploaded this pics of the walnut)

Golde60 ·

anyway, i will sign off for the night with my fav picture so far, from a few months back.

this is when the underside was painted but before it was fitted back to the pan and ready for topside painting in the booth

next update i can show some pics of dash (walnut not MDF) and the car assembled prior to painting in the booth

PHAT BUG ·

Lookin good Kim!

VWFREAK ·

Sweet ride, should come up a treat.

pyr0 ·

awesome stuff i cant wait for the next set of pics :thumb

kustomkool ·

Youve come along way brother xlnt work proud as punch to say that that car is a Oildripper.

jenz58 ·

Wow that last pic is impressive......Kim it's gunna look so sweet...

The workshop is so clean n tidy!!! Can't get over it...

Golde60 ·

time to post some more pics.
I havent seen it for a while, cos i ve been interstate

got back to melbourne to find some parts i d ordered had arrived in the mail, so i gotta go and put them on soon

thanks to classic vee dub (pacific) for the parts.

pics to follow

Golde60 ·

ok:

as promised, here are pics of the walnut dash.
you cant tell from these how dark it will be.

i have stained it since then.

guages mount up to fit flush, with chrome surrounds

i will put in a standard speedo i think for RWC and rego etc, but im toying with the idea of fitting a t3 orange needle (kms) speedo to suit the other VDO guages i have.

i think that the orange needle would add some consistency to the look of the dash.

.... anyway, just dreaming now.

here are the pics of the dash prior to staining. i sat them up to look like it will when finished

hope they worked, its been a while since i posted pics

Golde60 ·

will also be keeping the original chrome and attaching it to the dash to continue the horizontal line that i like so much about the flat screen bugs.

i have had the central bit of chrome shortened and rechromed to fit, cos the guages meant that it was about 15mm too long

also got some billet dash knobs to fit up too

Golde60 ·

oh, and changed the horn button to black

blue would have look out of place in there!

Golde60 ·

now the momentous occasion:

BODY ONTO PAN - PRIOR TO PAINT

from this:

to this:

seems like so little, but it was a milestone for me to get the body back onto the pan and know that it was there for good

:party

Golde60 ·

more pics of the body on the pan:

Golde60 ·

then more rubbing and lots of careful fitting off (thanks sasha) prior to painting.

all the hang offs were fitted up as a check prior to being pulled off and painted seperately. doors were painted on the car.

here it is prior to colour going on

keep in mind that i am a slow mover when it comes to posting these pics, and all this work was done some months ago.

Golde60 ·

and the rear view

notice that w lid.

steel not fibreglass - thanks again to sasha - this came up better than i thought and it has nt got those vents that some many people like

(sorry, but i dont)

anyway, another minor difference to most that makes all the difference to me

Golde60 ·

you can see from the last pic that the T bar on the Eliminator shifter is too close to the stereo box.

this has been modified since.
just another of the problems when doing everything a little different

thats it for me tonight

next update: paint is on!!
:party
(damn that means uploading more pics)🙁

Dasdubber ·

Awesome stuff Kim....it certainly is a monentous occasion getting that body back onto pan and one that I can't wait for!!

Just out of curiosity, why is the body being painted on the pan (considering the need for masking up etc)? I'm sure there is a good reason!

Cheers
Alan

frenzix ·

very nice work... keep em coming

PHAT BUG ·

looking good Kim, real good!

VWFREAK ·

Gets better every time I look at this post. She's gunna be one sweet ride.

Che Castro ·

very nice.

should be great once its painted completely

pete wood ·

mate awesome stuff 🙂

this car is gonna be beaut!

Golde60 ·

thanks for all the great feedback guys

i m heading out on saturday to do some more work on it, so its bound to inspire me to put some more pics up soon

Che Castro ·

hey what steering wheel is that? where'd you get it from?

jenz58 ·

Wow again Kim....looks so fantastic...buggar if it isn't so exciting to see happening :bounce :bounce

Golde60 ·

jon

steering wheel is a flat4 gtv, but not with a standard horn button.
its an optional button rather than the blue one.

alan

the car was painted on the pan so that it could be sprayed and left on there. the idea was that the car would be less likely to get damaged/scratched/dented etc if we could wheel it straight in and out of the booth rather than have to lift it back onto the pan.

all the fit up was done prior to painting.
and most importantly, it was the way that i was advised to do it (i didnt actually do the work myself)

i have been very happy with the job so i think it was the right way to go

Che Castro ·

Oh ok, i thought the GT wheels had solid spokes. Saw them in Tokyo for about $500 AUD but too pricey for me 🙁 looks great though🙂

Golde60 ·

ok... pics as promised of the car with its paint on.

this is what i saw from the back of the shop. i drove out there late one night after work just so that i could see the paint after it had been laid on.

was very pleased to say the least

Golde60 ·

ok so here it is up close and personal

Golde60 ·

more:

BenettonVW ·

WICKED!!

Kim, man, you gotta be pumped.. Jamboree, here we come!!

ruckus ·

Hey Kim what size and profile etc. tyres are you running?

Golde60 ·

yeah, jimbo, im real keen to get it done now.

currently reading up on the car audio australia forum for advice (thanks for the lead alan)

works have progressed alot further than just paint, with the dash panels stained and in, bumpers chromed and mounted, headlight buckets painted.

main areas to go are assembly (lots to go here), wiring, engine assembly (sharpbuilt bits, wiring, exhaust etc), stereo and interior

will take some time, but its getting there

barls ·

by the looks of them id take a rough stab and say they are the same as what i have 205/65/15 or 215/65/15

Golde60 ·

ruckus:

fronts are 175 55 continentals (damn expensive, but i didnt want anything less than 175s with my extra weight and cb discs). also, i dont really like the look of thin up front on 5.5s

rears are 205 55 gts

the contis are rear tyres off a smart car. i could have gone with 145 65s which are the fronts, but i decided against it. (too narrow)

with my narrowed beam (70mm) and the discs and increased offset of the american eagle wheels, the front track has ended up looking pretty stock, which is good. one day i might go narrower again, but its fine for now

what are you thinking of using on yours?
the wheel offset is the critical choice, especially when lowering

Dasdubber ·

Awesome stuff Kim! How good does it look in paint!!!

I am very jealous of your turning circle! 😉 Hopefully with my 80mm narrowed beam things will improve!

Can't say how awesome it is looking...great colour choice (and as said before I knew there was a good reason for painting the shell on the pan - I wasn't having a go at you, was just curious!).

Keep it up mate, lookin mighty fine.

Golde60 ·

nah man, no offense was taken

i ve just been looking at you latest audio progress on the audio forum.

damn theres alot of reading to do before i make my choices.

ruckus ·

hey Kim. I've had an absolute nightmare with my tyre selection! started with 195/65s all round (they came with the rims), then went down to 185 on the front but still had problems with a passenger in the car when braking into a corner. So now I've got michelin 165/80 in the front and 205/65 in the back. Big problem is that now the car has been bumped back up at least an inch or 2. I know it sounds petty but it has made a big difference to handling and is FAR from the perfect solution. Thanks for the info and sorry for the tangent.

Car looks awesome by the by:thumb

Dasdubber ·

Kim at least you are able to do the reading before making your selection unlike me who has to work with what I have...which means more money spent replacing components with those I should have gone with in the first place!

Ah well, there is a lot of good info out there....www.sounddomain.com is a US site but also has a fair bit of info. You're right....lots of reading!! I'm still sifting through it all.

barls ·

looks good mate hope it everything you want. this will be a show stopper when its finished mate

jenz58 ·

Wow Kim luv the colour!!!! So nice 😎

Golde60 ·

ok

after the forum crash, its time to get those pics of the interior up again

ruckus ·

Hey Kim have you got any pics of the places you have removed mountings for the headliner? It'd be a great help if you could post 'em

Golde60 ·

this is what i saw when i arrived, looking good

Golde60 ·

thanks to Adrian at Marocco Vehicle Trimming

cant recommend this guy highly enough

so heres all the proof of his great work

Golde60 ·

you should have seen the seats before they were trimmed, wow what a transformation (i wish i had some before and after pics)

anyway, they have come up like new.

and you can also see that the rear seats have been done with pleats to match the fronts

btw, fronts are out of a 968 porsche (mid 80s)

Golde60 ·

ragtop is in now and interior work has all been finished

getting engine tin painted and wiring (hopefully soon)

then only needs to get the stereo sorted

damn, if only it were as easy as these two little things!!

bertie_beetle ·

😠 best beetle i've ever seen in my entire life. you are a champion. its just.............damn.............congratulations. obviously a lot of time, effort and $ gone into it, i hope you enjoy it for many years to come.

cheers.
BB

ruckus ·

damn fine Kim. You've given me alot of inspiration throughout this project and it's great to see it coming together.

The dash, seats and headliner look particularly awesome.

jenz58 ·

Kim I love the way your've done the interior..... it looks great with the painted pillars and no lining....

OK this may be a dumb question but is the lining meant to sound proof.....? How will this work...I'm sure you've worked all this out .....but I would love to know...

I love the personalised features.....and SO classy...and unique

akean1 ·

mate, that is beautifull! great colour scheme. looks tops!

Golde60 ·

thanks for the kind words guys

the dash has come out really nice. its the only bug ive seen with walnut dash, and i know its all real cos i made it myself

cant wait to get the thing on the road, rag back and stereo up!!

Dasdubber ·

So Kim, what did you end up with audio choice - all that reading on caraudioaustralia pay off??

I have changed my entire system - only kept the original amps...changed headunit, sub and front splits!

Give us some details!
Alan

Golde60 ·

no details yet, will be puchasing soon, but have decided to go a little more subdued than the original plan.

the interior looks too good to put the kick panels in, as i dont think they suit the overall theme of the car

still a work in progress.....

are you still going with the kick panels?

VWCOOL ·

Goddamn that is nice, Goldman.

makes me wanna go an re-restore my Oval.

Did you get the Hoodjax on okay?

HGFS ·

Hi, love the colour, the overall look of this car is coming up great. Is the colour a VW one & if so what is it? I've seen pics of early beetles in similar colours on the net but still trying to tie colour names to photos.
Cant wait till mine is at this stage, it's gonna take years 🙁

Nice job!

Dasdubber ·

Golde60 wrote:are you still going with the kick panels?
Yep, will start making them in the next few weeks - front stage seems to be the most important aspect of a system (so the consensus says) so I'll be keeping them. I'm sure yours will still sound very nice when done! Looking great once again!

E ·

Just found out about this Resto - awesome work dude. How much longer do you reckon you have to go?

Mr Bubble Head ·

Kim

Its been great following your car through the stages and seeing the progress, it seems so long ago since we cut the dash out of that wreck of mine. I've only just looked up this tread and its already taken me back to when I first saw your car in primer ready for the body work to be finished.
It seems funny that my car is on the same rotiserie and its at the same stage as when I first saw yours, Sasha has been doing a great job with your car (and mine) Now Andy is sorting out the engine side of it ,so the light at the end of the tunnel carn't be far off.
I love the work on the interior the seat material is very close to what I want in the oval it will be nice and comfy with a low wear factor and a none bum scorcher on a hot summer day to boot. The upholstery stitch work is to a very high standard and matches the colour of the body perfectly.

I keep meaning to gather all my pics up from the early stage of my project and starting a thread up of my own maybe i'll get round to it after easter sometime.

Keep up the good work I carn't wait to see it at the shows (jamboree?) then hopfully next to my rag roof sometime later in the year.

Kim keep up the good work, Sasha you've done a great job, Andy your doing a great job.

Cheers nIck

Golde60 ·

yeah, its coming along well nick

when are you gonna show all the stuff that you have already done to yours in a similar post?
its good to see another bug up on the rotisserie getting the full treatment

as for mine, i bought all the stereo gear last weekend, and while i m not quite going to the same extent as the das-look resto, it will still be a thumping set up.

i have decided not to put the pods in cos the interior looks to good as it is.
my front 'stage' is gonna be made up only of a pair of tweeters, which will hopefully tuck well into the shape of the body and disappear from sight.
not exactly the same 'frontal audio stage' but will certainly help with the frontal sound imaging

rear is gonna get the full treatment - boxed JL sub, with seperated enclosure for JL two ways, all behind the rear seat. all to be powered by a JL amp.

then off to the trimmers again for a matching finish on the box, and a few (very minor) changes to the works that have been done

wiring and engine works are continuing....

.... shouldnt be too long now.

as for pics, i m in sydney on business for the next 5 weeks, so will be a while for more pics

BenettonVW ·

You might have to drop into the Nats whilst you are up there for 'business'.. 😉

Bugger!

Golde60 ·

i wish i could have gone to the nats - looked like an awesome lineup.

unfortunately i had the handbrake on that weekend, so we were out seeing the sights of sydney.

oh well, theres always next year. hopefully with my car ! !

anyhow, things are still progressing along well, so heres some of the latest pics

Golde60 ·

ok - so its finally looking like a car now......

Golde60 ·

and with the hoodjax in place - great, simple product that is easily installed (even if it meant interupting glenn's afternoon at the pub)

Golde60 ·

and finally, the engine is in:

you can see the header pipes from sharpbuilt in this pic

and here you can see that it really is a tight fit to get these things in and fitting well

thanks again to andrew for all the fiddly bits that are easily overlooked
- spacers to mount the engine at the right height
- seals keeping the heat out of the engine bay
- grinding back the valve covers to fit properly
- removable fasteners to the upright kit
- fibreglass modifications
- modifications to the carb linkages

anyway, thanks to him, heres what it looks like when its done right and the details arent forgotten

boersch ·

niiice.. interior and colour scheme and everything goes together so well. can't wait to see it at DOVW. congrats

Golde60 ·

and finally some shots of just how tight things are in there

plan is for a 4 into 1 exhaust (which i have seen almost finished today). primaries go along behind the rear apron, muffler next to one of the valve covers, running back to front, then along to the front, over the gearbox, turn to the back, into a resonator and out.

and the adjustable konis to all four corners

Golde60 ·

exhaust should be complete in a few days. amazing how a good exhaust gut can fit all the pipes and lengths into such a small space

i am very happy with the ground clearance that i ve got and its all hidden away nicely. no pipes or anything hanging out the back

i am gonna bring it to dotvw, but i m really just looking forward to driving the thing!

Dasdubber ·

Whoo-hooo....awesome stuff Kim. I can empathise with the clearance issues you've experienced getting the type IV to fit! It is all executed very well and super tidy - big credit to you and those involved in the rebuild.

Well done on a top effort (I can also empathise with just wanting to drive it!)

Alan

Grey 57 ·

Looking great Kim. Real nice work. :thumb:thumb

HGFS ·

Love this car, great work. It's really progressed heaps lately, you must be getting close to that light at the end of the tunnel. It all looks to be coming together really well as far as the overall theme, should be an unreal ride. Keep up the good work

ruckus ·

Can't wait to see it in the flesh kim, well done.

Che Castro ·

Good stuff. what are the engine specs?

Golde60 ·

engine specs are very similar to alans with a few minor differences

-1971cc t4. (standard crank, pistons and cylinders)
-balanced and rebuilt by Conte Engines
-2L heads with 1800 valves
-1800 flywheel
-511 cam (i am told that its similar to a porcshe grind, but exact spects unknown).... or is it 411?
-40mm dells with cb update kit
-compufire electronic ignition with twin compufire coils (onto 009)
-sharpbuilt upright kit extensively modified for ease of dismantling and better fit by Andrew at Dub Customs
-headers by sharbuilt
-custom exhaust (4 into 1) by Barney at Hallam Performance

engine was bought of the forum from Brad Connell some 2-3 years ago

engine is running

i m looking forward to getting it tuned and cant wait to drive it

btw, i m not taking credit for the quality of work:
thanks also to Sasha at Delux for the top body and paint and the custom mods

i have done some of the work myself, but time and expertise meant that it was mainly the 'dumb stuff' that i did

thanks for all the kind words guys

PHAT BUG ·

She's lookin great Kim, I'm really lookin forward to seeing it!!

jenz58 ·

.....kim you must be so excited right now...almost ready to drive!!!!! You'll go nuts😎

Wow...fantastic....quality stuff...

Golde60 ·

jen

i m goning nuts now

i ll go sane once its finished!

jenz58 ·

lol...know the feeling 😀

kroozzn63 ·

cant wait to see some snazzy pics when its regod and running around town "AWESOME"

Mr Bubble Head ·

Looks good now it's got the engine in, I'm very intrested in the works on the custom exsaust. looks great catch up soon

nIck

pete wood ·

so who is gonna be first to get regoed, you or das? 😉

yep that's a challenge:P

BenettonVW ·

Good on ya Kim, looks the ducks nuts bud! Well done. Not long now!!

Golde60 ·

looking forward to seeing the completed exhaust soon.

last time i saw it there was still the resonator to go on. so i wanna see and hear it now that its complete.

next issue is gonna be engineer.

damn.

dunno if i wanna go through the time and expense now or later. i have one possible lead.... through the vwcv

[Edited on 8-5-2005 by Golde60]

SPRINTSTAR ·

Just like the corn flakes the car is, JUST RIGHT!

Beautiful Kim!

BLUE_62 ·

OK! I'm impressed..... :thumb

Golde60 ·

cheers guys....

is still progressing. here are the latest pics of the car now that the exhaust is in. i am very happy with the clearance that i have got with the exhaust.

i was after something that fitted under the car, was quiet, didnt have a muffler or any signs indicating big exhaust from the rear (definately NOT a cal look muffler hanging out the back), and no pipes showing.

has been acheived. only minor downside is the poor access to the valve covers, but the exhaust has been built with enough flanges to make it easily removalble.

anyway, here it is.

Golde60 ·

as you can see it is a 4 into 1 system, with sharpbuilt headers leading into custom built everything else.

muffler on the left side, piped forward, and up over the gearbox, then out the right, back to the rear, through a resonator and down and out.

will be quiet with a nice note, which is just what i was after. definatley didnt want loud

anyway, here are some more pics that i took when all the wheels were off so that the engineer could give the car the once over.

still a few gremlins and compliance issues to sort out for engineering (damn i hope that i can get the CB dropped spindles backed up by some sort of confirmation of strength - thats my biggest potention problem for the mo)

anyway, heres some more piccies

going forward into muffler and over gearbox

back out the other side and through the resonator

i will have to upgrade the rear (T1) brakes to the larger T3 brakes following my meeting with the engineer, and the rigorous brake testing that the car will need to pass.
better to do it now rather than have to do the test twice!

Golde60 ·

you can see the clearance that has been acheived. the system actually sits higher up than the engine!

Golde60 ·

took some more pics of the front while it was up on the hoist.

narrowed beam

wide five disc kit

Golde60 ·

and just wanted to throw in some pics of the engine cos i like it so much....

😉

traumin ·

Very impressive

pete wood ·

What is that fancy ignition module you're using? love the dizzy cap too.

in fact the whole car looks tops 😎

Golde60 ·

ignition is a compufire dis-ex. basically a 009 without points. wired to the sparkplugs thru a hi-po twin coil pack (one per two cylinders rather than one per four) that you can see mounted on the fire wall.

looks trick because it hides all the wires at the same time.

ruckus ·

engine looks sweet Kim. Are those filter shorter than usual?

Golde60 ·

i dont know what usual is mate, so .... ?

maybe someone else can pick the difference!

if they were any taller then there would be some clearance issues with the engine lid

barls ·

they look good mate but i think there will be a little intake noise at high speed cause this is a similar setup that i had on mine but im changing to an airbox setup

Golde60 ·

how does the airbox setup work barls, im not sure i understand what you mean

got any piccies?

pete wood ·

Barls, Make three and sell Golde and Daz one each

kombi_kid ·

man that mnust suk that u already have to make changes for engineering!! its all a load of shizza!!!
beautiful car though!!
lovely
rhys

Bizarre ·

Golde60 wrote:how does the airbox setup work barls, im not sure i understand what you mean

got any piccies?
Basically Webers / Dels is almost a straight line of down the barrel of the carb into the cylinder. The air box is just taking the inlet away so as there is a few bends of PVC or something to absorb some of the noise.

Sort of like standing round the corner from the stereo rather then in a direct line to the speaker

BTW
Nice work!

ummm..... by any chance, are you running hydraulic lifters???

Man - is that gunna be a bitch doing the valves!

Golde60 ·

nope, no hydraulic lifters, just gotta unbolt the flanges from the exhaust to get to the valves.

rhys: the rules are the load of shite. the engineer that i have been talking to has been pretty good. hes just explaining/following the crap that some pen pusher has written down. not his fault

the best one was the fact that i dont need to run external mirrors!
after upgrading the brakes, brake lines, resevoirs, rear brakes, extra seat belts, plates etc...

... rule book says that i dont need external mirrors. minimal to comply is internal rear mirror.

cant complain though, cost most of the stuff i have done for the right reasons, so i certainly wont be driving without mirrors.

was a good exercise to go through all the details with the engineer and after doing it i think that the car is definately gonna be safer.

apart from that it will be engineered, insurable and better from a resale value too!

damn rules.....

... dont get me started.:puke

barls ·

pete wood wrote:Barls, Make three and sell Golde and Daz one each
that i might do mate 😉 im making one for my bug and ill let you know how much quieter it is.

Golde60 ·

yeah - that 'd be pretty cool.

i have seen the posts on your various airbox setups, and they give the engine bay a whole different look.

i will wait and see how noisy my setup is, as this will be my first engine with twin carbs, and i think i m gonna enjoy a little extra noise for a while!!

in the mean time, my car is not getting any closer to looking like this:

and probably wont for another couple of weeks

oh, well.

only remaining issues are engineers and dyno time to get the carbs jetted right. then its off to vicroads.

and before anyone asks, i m sick of guessing how much longer, cos it always goes slower.

not long now!

barls ·

fair enough cause both you and das are running webbers and im running the stock solexs

Chewy ·

Hey dude, just a little something..
On the underneath pic of the bug on the hoist it looks like your axle boots are positioned so the seam is facing upwards, if you can imagine with the suspension going through its travel that seam is getting bent lengthways..
Its best to put them so the seam is to the side, makes them last longer..
Farkin nice buildup but, I love it.,

Golde60 ·

thanks for that. i will make the change

..... anyone help me get my spindles strength verified......

..... please

jenz58 ·

.......Kim it's looking so good...OMG the work you're putting into is brilliant...

Yes I can relate to how you feel about the question of finish time...so have deleted mine... I'd scolled up and saw someone else had already got in before me 😀

It looks pretty close now though 😉

Golde60 ·

yeah, time is a second priority to quality.

it will be ready when its ready.

🙁

Golde60 ·

it has been a bit slow for the last couple of weeks, but i managed to get out and spend some time working on it yesterday.

didnt get much done, but i took some shots anyway, cos i cant help myself

here are the bits that i got back from the chromers a few weeks ago.
got all 4 overriders done.
other bits are the glovebox pull and the chrome strip for the glovebox, yet to go on

Golde60 ·

this is where they will end up - on my timber clad glovebox (which doesnt close yet!!)

Golde60 ·

pictures of the wiring (work in progress) under the bonnet

2nd pic with some speaker wire through to the body for the tweeters

Golde60 ·

oops. you can see the extra knobs that are in better in this pic. i decided to keep them off the timber to have a smoother look to the dash

Golde60 ·

and of course some progress shots showing the car now that it has over riders on.

makes it look heaps better i reckon.

back bumper still needs to be 'tweaked' a bit, as it looks like the top of it is leaning back too much. spent a fair bit of time getting it this far as the old irons where badly bent, and the new ones didnt fit the bumpers.

Golde60 ·

Golde60 ·

still more engineering bits and peices to go.

most of the interior is out so that floor plates can go in under the carpet.
additional mods to the braking system, including t3 rear drums (bigger).
rear inertia reel seat belts (2)

still some stuff to do on the stereo, but i might end up doing this myself after rego.

biggest drama is getting the correct information from CB performance regarding the dropped spindles so that my engineer will sign them off.

i have another post going for this, but i wonder....

... has anyone had CB dropped spindles go through an engineering certification?

i need all the help i can get at solving this problem, otherwise there will be serious time and expense (on top of what i have done so far) getting the car engineered.

Love the tones of the woodwork you've done Kim. Nice and smooth mate, makes the whole thing ooze 'cool' (in a good way :thumb)

Octa ·

Nice. How about a side on shot to look at the wheel combo?

Che Castro ·

lookin hot 🙂 What's with the camera in the last few photos? Its very green 😀

*did* ·

very nice, i love the dash

jenz58 ·

...Kim the Dyno Day is July 30th now...plenty of time??

How's it going?? Sorry had to ask...is the paper work done now?

Golde60 ·

just back from holidays jen

i can only hope that things have been progressing....

the dilema of the engineering and paperwork persists i presume, but i will know more with a few phone calls tommorrow

heres hoping for the 30/7 :thumb

jenz58 ·

....cool you've still got most of this month left :thumb

Golde60 ·

Progress:

still got dramas with engineering paperwork on the spindles
i m hoping that i can get info from CSP in Germany, as CB are 'still looking into it'...... great.

anyway, all the other engineering stuff has been done:
floor plates
seat belts in the rear, including mounting points
guages
wiring (head unit, front tweeters and amp)
speedo (t3 orange needle KMPH, just for something different, matches the guages)
glovebox
spare wheel (still gotta put repro hazet in)
brake system upgrade (t3 rear drums)

shes getting close

heres some pics

dash with guages in and custom speedo

speedo has lLEDs hidden in for all the functions that u usually find on a beetle speedo, or on the dash. i think it has come up real well

spare

Golde60 ·

and of course the new mirror, which needed a bit of work. theres not much point in having a mirror if you cant see out of it!!

makes me glad that we waited until the seats (and me) were back in before it was fitted.

close up

far

Grey 57 ·

Looking great Kim. Have you sneakly driven it round the block yet?

😎

Golde60 ·

was planning on doing that on sat, but hasnt been tuned yet, and was running on 3 (fouled plug)

until i get the carbs jetted and synched, its only gonna be run on the dyno.

......... dyno next week?? i hope so

getting close!!

jenz58 ·

...Dyno day is on the 30th July plenty of time 👍

Even if we're not going on the dyno we'll be there to see your beetle 😎

Dasdubber ·

Fantastic Kim, sorry I haven't been able to help more with the engineering certification of dropped spindles - I am yet to go through that but the engineer I have been dealing with didn't seem to be too concerned when I showed them to him before bolting them on. Have you called and spoken to CB directly?

Otherwise might be worth posting on www.cal-look.com in the forum because I think there are a couple of CB employees there who may help??

The car is looking sweet - your head unit mod on the dash has come up a real treat too - good stuff! :thumb

pete wood ·

Nice mirrors, got some of them on my buggy, I know what you mean about not be able to see stuff too...😢

Golde60 ·

jenz58 wrote:...Dyno day is on the 30th July plenty of time 👍

thanks for that jen, i take that as a huge compliment considering how nice your bug is.

i m still going through engineering dilemas, so i m hoping they will be solved soon enough to get to the dyno day

cheers
Kim

Golde60 ·

dilemas continue

dyno day appearance is appearance is unlikely now

jenz58 ·

Kim what's happening....the engineering paperwork :jesus

I hope you get it sorted soon so you can get out and enjoy driving

We'll miss seeing you on Saturday and know you must be disappointed....it is a frustrating time I can still remember what it was like 🤪

barls ·

hey kim what cam are you running in that 2L of yours if you dont mind me asking

Golde60 ·

got another spindle from CB today

only way this is gonna get engineered is with a failure test on the CB spindle compared with the VW unit.

so we've got to set up a system that will allow the engineer to test both to failure. its gonna be alot of weight to break them i think

it has basically taken me 3 months to chase down all the possible leads for other options, none of which amounted to anything. the test option was my last resort scenario which i was hoping to avoid.

i have realised that virually no one gets their cars engineered.

please.....

..... lets hope that it can pass the tests and get certified.

barls ·

good luck mate its just some of us that get engineered the rest are just happy to risk it

Lams ·

Would you be able to keep this test report so others with drop spindles can later use the same report to get their car certified? or does it have to be one test per certification?

Golde60 ·

i will talk to the engineer about this.

i will definately be keeping it, but from what i understand, each vehicle has be to certified on an individual basis.

the testing that i am going through will likely make things easier for others. will probably end up costing around $1000-$1500 on top of what testing would have cost me anyway, which will be around the $1500 mark.

damn, it adds up quick.

i ll have a chat to the engineer and see what he thinks about passing the info on to others

Golde60 ·

previous idea was using the ball joint spindles.

appantley the link pin ones have never been engineered in australia, and from what i can gather to date, any where else for that matter.

nothings easy..

Adam_C ·

Did u end up Calling CB for the information on the spindles?

Golde60 ·

yeah spoke to them many times

the only way they ended up helping me was encouraging me to buy more parts.
my assesment of their position was that (being from the good ol' US of A) they were not able to send me any information to verify the strength, materials, design or testing.

great

that leaves me to do all the hard work myself.

take this as word of warning, everyone: be careful of the words 'for off road use only'

not happy, but then again, life wasnt meant to be easy

Golde60 ·

ok, looks like step one of the engineering tests has been completed and passed.

on monday, i arrived out at Dandenong to see that Andrew (DubCustoms) has built be the biggest piece of apparatus possible (as requested by the engineer) and was ready to test the spindle.

i had a bit of a chuckle, as this was almost as big as the car and was placing up to 2 tonnes of load via a jack at a leverage of up to 4m - it ended up that we only needed a lever length of 1.5 - 2.0m

anyhow, i am yet to receive it, but i am now FINALLY confident that the CB dropped spindle that suits the wide 5 disc kit will be ticked off by my engineer. what a huge amount of greif this has caused, but finally we have progress.

to cut a long story short, the original spindle failed at a far less load than the CB item.

will post pics in the next few days.
and for all those that are interested, i will be passing on the information to others who want to get this kit engineered - for a cost.

not yet determined, but it will be a fraction of what the whole ordeal cost me, and is not profit making, just to offset some of what i have spent.

will keep you all posted.

Dasdubber ·

Kim glad to hear some progress is being made finally. Sorry you went through so much heartache/hassle getting things engineered - I certainly can't blame you for wanting to offset some cost of engineering since you had to outlay so bloody much!

VDubya ·

Mine were certified with a much cheaper x-ray.

Golde60 ·

VDubya wrote:Mine were certified with a much cheaper x-ray.
yours were CB wide 5 dropped spindles? to my knowlege these have never been tested before. where were you 4 months ago!

xray only verifies that there are no cracks, it cant confirm whether a new part (with different shape/thicknesses/size/materials) is stronger than the original.
the only way i could do it was to break the old and the new.

is your car fully engineered now? i still have the on road brake and dynamics test to do and the report to write.

Golde60 ·

here is the pics:

this is what i saw when i arrived, and i had a bit of a nervous laugh, cos the damn thing was so big. its about six metres long.

if you have a look in the background you might notice that there is a couple of SHS's holding up the mezzanine floor of the factory! its longer than my car!

Golde60 ·

it had the gussets and plates welded to each end of the upper piece, with a 4 and 5 bolt pattern at different ends.

Golde60 ·

those pics above show the CB hooked up and the factory on the floor in front, for anyone who is interested in the difference, the CB does look beefier

Golde60 ·

heres the three stooges trying to figure out what that big bang was

turns out it was the factory part failing. spindle itself was the weak point in both.

heres what it looked like when we were done

Golde60 ·

CB part took alot more pressure and eventually couldnt be made to reach the point were it could be bent without the jack like the factory one could.

it got this far until it got fouled by the apparatus that we had tooled up

and heres what it looked like when we were done

Golde60 ·

So for all those that think this has been an easy process, heres the proof.

Big thanks to Andrew at Dub Customs and Bill for the welding and Rob for the help on the day. I dont have space or skills enough to do all this stuff myself.

I reckon that the process will cost well over $2k when all the bills come in, but i reckon it has been worth it for me cos i am a stickler for the rules and regs, and i wanna drive this thing as often as possible.

i am actually looking forward to when officer plod pulls me over and asks a few annoying questions expecting to give me a canary.
bring it on.

thats when the engineering report will give me the real satisfaction!

Golde60 ·

Lams wrote:Would you be able to keep this test report so others with drop spindles can later use the same report to get their car certified? or does it have to be one test per certification?
as i mentioned, i will be keeping it and making it available for a cost.

car will still need to be engineered, but this will cover the spindle that fits with the wide 5 kit

ruckus ·

Great work Kim, good to see an end to your dramas. I wonder if anyone has done the same for the four-stud disk spindle?

Golde60 ·

i think that the ball joint ones have been TUV approved in Germany

if you buy them from CSP they will give you the TUV, which will mean that the engineer will have no problem drawing some comparisons and approving them in aus.

CB supply the spindles to CSP, but will not supply any approval paperwork. i have done lots of homework on this and spoken to people in both companies.

my recommendation if you want to ge the approvals is to deal with CSP rather than CB.

let me know if i can be any help

VWCOOL ·

Good work - but what a headf*ck, huh

Che Castro ·

jesus christ! That is definitely interesting. Great work, must have been such a relief to have done.

Golde60 ·

Che Castro wrote:must have been such a relief to have done.
thats an understatement

it is booked in for the 'on road' engineering test on saturday 22nd. brakes, handling, emissions, noise etc.

thanks also due to Bill Malkoutzis who is doing a the engineering testing for me

Golde60 ·

time to take it for a dirive this afternoon to put some k's on the engine

dyno later this week and engineering tests again on saturday.

with any luck it will be registered by the end of the month

Golde60 ·

Second batch of engineering tests yesterday.

So far so good, but it was a close call after failing the first test.

setting up for the testing. Here it is with Bill (Engineer) in the background and the microphone for the decibel readings.

Golde60 ·

couldn't complete the noise tests here, cos we were'nt sure what the critical RPM for a type 4 engine is.
didnt have a tacho.

turned out that the engine was making more noise than the exhaust!

this was confirmed later, back at Bills house when we had some enthusiastic helpers hold up some barriers.
passed the 96db limit for the exhaust (92) and combined engine and exhaust (94) passed anyway so all is well.

Golde60 ·

then started setting up for the brake tests.

this was the part that i wasnt looking forward to. engine has only 250kms on it and i hadnt really gotten used to driving it yet, so handing over the keys was a bit uncomfortable.

anyway, the test goes like this:

0-60kmph as fast as you can, brake as hard as you can (acheiving greater than 0.5Gs)
repeat 15 times.
0-100kmph as fast as you can, brake as hard as you can (acheiving greater than 0.7Gs)
reapeat 2 times.

this tests the brakes under heat and relatively to the engine, obviously the faster you accelerate and decelerate, the less time you have to dissipate the heat and the brakes will not stop you ('brake fade') if they get too hot.

anyhow, thats it in a nutshell, and heres what we needed to do it:

GPS antenna

G Force sensor (sorry, dont know the technical term)

Pedal pressue sensor

Golde60 ·

Pedal pressure sensor was hooked into a guage, and if you needed more than 45kgs to stop then we fail.

(I think that was the load, anyway - some of the techinicalities escape the memory now)

so, i climbed in the passenger seat and hoped like hell that it would pass

Golde60 ·

15 times from 60: OK
1st time from 100 didnt even pull up. Guage went of the chart and failed pretty badly.

crap. i thought that it was all over, but Bill calmly said maybe the brakes arent bedded in and we should let it sit for a while.

smelt badly of brake fluid and burnt rubber by this time and i was feeling pretty bad. wheels we too hot to touch and rotors had changed colour.

so off we go again after about half and hour. wheels are still warm and i m not feeling to confident

15 times from 60: OK
1 st time from 100: OK
2 nd time from 100: OK

tried again from 100 to test again and it was touch and go.

anyway, the verdict was that we had passed.

YAY!

what a f**kn releif.

Golde60 ·

then back to Bills place for a VW Club tech day.

Thanks to Bill for his very informative talk and all the other folks there for helping with the final noise test.

Was a very satisfying day for me, cos now i feel like i am most of the way finished.

RWC, rego and then I m away.

I gotta say, through the whole process, which has been very involved, that Bill has been very understanding and patient with me and even though there were some na$ty tests that needed to be done to satisfy him (not his own fault) he has been thoroughly professional and I would recommend him to anyone.

phew

what a long update

Stealth ·

Well done Kim, at least you have Bill who is a top class engineer and also is a VW nut and knows his stuff. A great outcome for you and can't wait to see it at the day of this year.

Golde60 ·

yeah, much respect to Bill.

also, cant forget the hard work of Andrew at Dub Customs and Sasha at Deluxe, without who the quality and completion would be zero, it would still be just an idea in my head

I go the all clear from Annelise to go to the DOTVW this year too. Was looking like I would nt make it for a while there....

Golde60 ·

and heres a pic of me taking a neighbour for a joyride...

.... "just bedding in the brakes officer"

(still driving on a permit - havent been caught yet)

[ Edited on 23-10-2005 by Golde60 ]

56astro ·

Great work Kim

It IS a great relief to get through the engineering tests, aint it.

Initially my brakes were pretty ordinary, and my local brake man said don't worry if your shoes are new, just bed them in on the way to the engineer. When he did the test he said they were fair, but should get better.

They are getting heaps better by the day.

KEEP ON DUBBIN'

barls ·

good to see you got there eventually mate mine will get there eventually im sure

Dasdubber ·

Holy $hit Kim, that is certainly some comprehensive testing. I am glad you are getting through it all eventually - at least you can be satisfied that you car will be able to safely navigate any, if not all challenges on the road. Well done and thanks for going through the process with everyone on AVD!

Golde60 ·

56astro wrote:............... just bed them in on the way to the engineer. When he did the test he said they were fair, but should get better.

i tried the 'bed them in on the way' technique, which clearly didnt work too well.

the first round of testing bedded them in pretty well.

mine have continued to get better since. it is a relief, cos i dont want to be driving something that is borderline safe.

GASBNR ·

Kim,
Its looks worth all the work, great looking car.

pete wood ·

congrats matey. I know your pain, but it's great to see you did things the right way as opposed to doing whatever you wanted and driving round in an illegal car like most would.

BUGBOY ·

Great to see you got the all clear mate.
After all your work its ready to enjoy.
Also its great that you put the info up here to help people see and understand what its all about.

BenettonVW ·

Well done man, looking forward to having a look!!

Mr Bubble Head ·

Well done for getting the job done right. Now all the spending is out of the way all you have to do is enjoy her and I dare say pay the bills for the next year or two.

Just in time for summer😵‍💫

Golde60 ·

thanks blu

cheers for the pics too, i will link up a few into this post, cos i didnt have the camera there on the day

Golde60 ·

Al - thats very high praise coming from you.

thanks mate. i look forward to seeing yours in the flesh one day.

heres some pics from the other threads.

kustomkool ·

some fine shit there brother. Now next project hey.😁

Golde60 ·

still a few things to sort out with this one such as speaker enclosure and interior tweaks.

other than that its pretty much done. i m looking forward to driving it over summer, especially now that its rego'd, as of yesterday. gonna clock up 1000ks pretty soon (had about 850 at the rego inspection)

"was only out at d.o.t.v.w. for the safety check", just like you dames. i even got a permit to drive there officer!

haha.

thank god i finally got it rego'd, after all the engineering bits and then another nightmare with vicroads, cos i couldn t prove the vehicles history. (it probably hadnt been rego'd in 20 years). they dont keep records for more than 5 years in tassie (twice as many heads to track over there) and the car came with no plates or rego stickers.

i wrote a few letters, got two stat decs and eventually broke through the red tape.

if anyone has any dramas, i know the drill pretty well now!!

WHOO HOO

time to enjoy it

Golde60 ·

oh, and i got a cool mooneyes 6k tacho as a christmas present to myself

:tree:party

Golde60 ·

now that i m out and driving, i think its time to follow up on the discussions that i have been having with various people regarding my engineering certification.

i have added up all the costs that were involved in getting it done and i have decided that i will be making reports available to people that are interested.

please u2u me for details on the costs

just so that i am clear, what i am selling is one 'license' to use the report so that it is legal (both from RTA's point of view, and also for insurance purposes) to drive on the road.

the report has been written in a way such that it cannot be duplicated or onsold without my prior consent or a specific agreement being written into it for a particular vehicle.

this applies to the spindle component of the CB performance wide 5 disk brake kit.
this does not apply to a regular CB performance dropped spindle.

it is also important to note that my car has passed the brake fade test with a 2L type 4 engine in it (making approximately 60kw at the rear wheels) and weighing about 40kg more than a stock engine
therefore if you are putting a smaller/lighter/less powerful engine you theoretically pass this test too.

just to preempt any sceptical comments, i am not doing this for the money. i am doing it as a means for people to easily get their car certified and legal THE RIGHT WAY.
the price will be a fraction of the cost and is only a means to me recouping some of my rather large outlay

Sweet car mate. I checked it out a DOVW last year. Top notch.
Nice to see one done properly too. Proves it can be done.:thumb
