Anyone know of anywhere I can get a stainless steel bolt kit for replacing the nuts and bolt on my 57' floorpan? Do such kits exist? Maybe anodised?
Otherwise, is there any special kinda 'car grade' bolts I should use?
Please let me know.

I don't know of anywhere that sells a kit of stainless nuts and bolts for the floor pan.
Generally stainless fasteners come in two grades A2-70 and A4-80, the second being the strongest and roughly equivalent to Gr8.8 high tensile bolts. Check what grade the existing bolts are and try to match them as closely as possible. Your best option is to go to a specialist bolt supplier such as Coventry and tell them what yo want.

you could get the original ones dipped and galvanised as an alternative?

VW Trends had an article on stainless steel fasteners which listed all the sizes of the bolts you had to replace on a VW and their location. Will try to find which issue and let you know. Then you only have to go to your bolt specialist and hand them the list.

That would be fantastic !!
Please let me know.
Thanks again.

When using stainless nuts and bolts always use lots of anti-seize (like loctite 767) otherwise the stainless will bind and you will be cutting the nuts off.

Gibbo, I didn't use a kit but got all my s/s fasteners from the "nut and bolt factory" on deshon st woolloongabba - I'm sure the guys probably cursed me when I would go in there with a bag of different nuts and bolts and washers and ask for 10 of these 20 of those etc. But they were always friendly face to face - I just let them serve the trade customers in between looking for my stuff.
Just take in one example of the bolt, nut whatever and they will measure it up including the thread pitch and will be able to replace most of what you need. Once you mention "veedub" they will probably roll their eyes 😵
Anyway, get a kit if you can find one, but getting them individually can be good to spread the costs out (yep it will be more expensive when not buying in bulk).
Cheers mate

Hi
I prefer getting the original pan & mudguard bolts replated, they nice thick heads on them and the pan ones have a pointy end and using nice wide stainless washers.
I forgot to say, before you get the bolts plated run a die nut over them and also run a tap through any body threads as well.

I just used zinc and cadmium plated high tensile bolts GR 8
in My beetle on the fenders and bumper brackets etc..
and zinc plated washers
I have used a few stainless steel bolts and nuts..
On the Body/chassis
I would take Steve's advice on using the original bolts
as the point on the end makes them MUCH easier to fit..
and use neverseize on all the bolts
best of luck

You can buy a complete kit from AIRKEWLD....it will take a while as they are made to order, 6 - 8 weeks.
Gibbo ·
Thanks for that, time isnt an issue for me.
All the bolts in their kit are allen key bolts... hmm I dunno about that.
Mick058 ·
theres heaps of kits on ebay, different years etc. check the uk ebay site. they have full and half kits. Can't vouch for them though, just saw them on there.
Gibbo ·
Anyone see any issues with allen bolts? I was just worried about not being able to tighten them properly or have them strip easily.
Gibbo ·
Has anyone used a button head allen bolt ket before? Did you have any issues?
Cheers

Hi
I think anything other than a 13mm hex would be a pain, but then again its not as if your going to be undoing them again for along time.

With using stainless bolts, what the issue of "Bimetal oxidation". I read somewhere (from a reputable publication, not internet heresay) that aparently an issue exists where the difference in the metals will cause rust even if there is no water involved, such as having stainless in direct contact with standard steel.
http://www.stainless-online.com/why-stainless-steel-stainless.htm
"It is the chromium in the steel that combined with oxygen to form a thin, invisible layer of chrome-containing oxide. This layer is only a few atoms thick due in part to the ability of the chromium atoms and oxide atoms to pack together tightly. This layer protects the steel underneath and has a unique self-healing ability. Should the layer become scratched or cut, the newly exposed steel will form another protective area with oxygen in the air. It is for this reason that stainless steels need an oxygen-rich environment."
This can aparently be directly tested by leaving a steel spray can on a kitchen sink for a period od time (unkown), beware as the resulting rust will penetrate the stainless and ruin the sink.
Just wondering what others have experienced replacing standard bolts with stainless, any problems?
