Gib-bug \'57 Oval Project Part I

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/27426/gib-bug-57-oval-project-part-i

Gibbo ·

Hey all, thought I might start my own update post.

My project, very long term project, is a '57 Oval. Purchased from Brad (blup58) on this very forum on the 10th July this year.

The car is nothing but a shell, un-restored pan and two boxes of parts!

The shell had been sandblasted back to bare metal and some welding and restoration had been done.

All together a very clean '57!

Anyway here are some pics to start things off....

Cheers

Are you heading for the balls out, quick as hell rebuild? If not, I've just bought a 58 as a donor car for my 57, but I'm sure there will be some stuff, I don't need, I know that it comes with 5 boxes of bits, but haven't scooted through them yet. The only prob is, I'm in the UK, but hopefully I should be sending a container to OZ in the next couple of months, the other half is going home first, I get to work in the UK for a few months longer. Not that I'm bitter at all, I like the UK winters!!
Forgot to mention, moving to the Noosa hinterland area, around Cooroy hopefully, but anywhere in that region we can get a decent plot of land, so not too far.

Anthiron ·

hey i live in carters ridge behind cooroy......nothing to do with the thread but i thought that was cool.

eirecooled ·

nice oval project. if you are after a rear apron the guy selling the pre '67 parts hads a couple of nos(new old stock) aprons for sale. should fit your model. good luck

mattie ·

this car has had some work to the left of this photo you can see how it was when we had it

Dasdubber ·

Gibbo, here are a few pics of the progress of the work Brad and I did to the oval whilst in his possession...

First here it is as arrived from Mattie....

And new stuff for the inside....

Dasdubber ·

C'mon Mark, you know you want Brad's rollcage - after all it is a custom make for your oval 😉

pod ·

looking good rust hole in same place as my 61 but on opposite side

Gibbo ·

lol, well I have a bit of money to spend, the pan is the main project at the moment, still thinking about Brads.......

But I have a sweet 69 pan I need to talk to you more about, it arrived this weekend... .I will be posting more pics today.

Next comes the strip and reconditioning of the pan....

In the next couple of months I hope....

Body is sitting very high at the back, due to the chassis and body mods not being done yet, and the front and rear will be dropped in the end.

Cheers all.

VWFREAK ·

Good work mate, she's really starting to get there.

Gibbo ·

I havent really done anything yet, the first part I will be doing is the pan restoration and lowering etc.

Chewy ·

Good luck dude, Im doing my pan reconditioning at the moment too..
Will be a ripper when its done

Gibbo ·

Just a quick update. The chassis is now resident on 2 saw horses in the garage, with only the front end left to strip off.

I spent all the money I had saved for the pan recon (Sorry Brad 🙂 ) on my squareback so its all been pushed back a few months.

In the meantime here are a couple of mock up shots of how the new dash might look with a nifty fuel gauge I found.

Cheers all...

Gibbo ·

another....

BLUE_62 ·

Hey boss, dont mind the dash idea. more to the point. The fuel guage. Do you know exactly what it came out of? How do you re-calibrate a fuel gauge to register as if it was the correct gauge for the sender unit? So far project is lookin good. Heaps of potential.. Keep us posted. 😎

Dasdubber ·

Glad you went with the dash gauge panel Mark, it looks a treat!! Nice square too - good to see another vw driving around the streets of the southside of brissy!
