If we're going to the shops and the kids ask which car we're taking, I'll say 'go jump in the Thing'.
Would settle for a country buggy, but I would almost do anything for a Thing....

My dream VW without a shadow of a doubt would have to be a factory RHD ragtop 1952 split deluxe with crotchcoolers, dropped on it's GUTS!!! I would then dry-store the original pan and run a custom space framed item (a'la pro stock VW) with big autocraft turbo motor. Set it off asthetically with big porsche disks all round and 18" cups, then... just to be wacky I would whitewall the uber-low-profile tires:kiss As for colour... I think the split era chocolate brown would be perfect for it.

1954 RHD deluxe
owned by myself. I wanted a very early RHD samba, preferably a barn door, that was fast, safe, as my daily driver, and this is it!if you are a purist then do not read any further, this bus has had some serious modifications done to it.
Obviously the suspension has been lowered, the rear has been IRS'ed and the front beam has had a height adjuster grafted on to it to get the van low, it has also been narrowed 3" each side!
The bus also features porsche 914 disk brakes on all four wheels with golf gti callipers, to attempt to slow the thing down. The wheels are 2 litre porsche alloys, fully polished, I didn't want wheel adapters so they seemed the best solution.
The gear box is also Porsche, a 911 G50 5 speed, with close ratio 2nd and 3rd, man what a headache that was to install!
The engine is a type 4 unit, presently a 2.6 with straight cut timing gears, 48 carb's, major work on the heads, lightened, balanced, race cam, magneto etc. full flow oil, upright porsche fan conversion, carbon fan shroud, and so on....
The body has had some work but I have tried to leave it as it is, rough! Inner and outer sills were replaced, along with both front wheel arches, generally the bus has survived quit well apart from the dents and dings everywhere,
also there were a few things missing.
I probably will restore the bus's paint some day but for the moment I am concentrating on speed! speed! speed!
The engine seemed to take for ever to run in, however that's all history now, just to give you an idea of it's performance you can change in to 5th gear at around 100 mph!! Can't wait to running it up the drag strip at Santa Pod later on this year.

Everytime someone bags my car (usually at school) I ignore them cause I know soon I'll be inside it driving it with a big smile on my face 馃榾 and will laugh at them for all their boring cars! You'll find for just as many nasty club members there's also many nice helpful ones who love all kinds of veedubs..

Well now we are talking about modern vw's, dream off owning a classic and a modern vw for sure, i have a 1999 passat v6 and is fantastic, no problems with it at all, er apart from the speeding fines and now having 11 points, 1 more i'm a gonna, but again one day its gotta ba the W8 for me, pure luxury and style

Just try and focus on what YOU like about YOUR car, the more you bite the more satisfaction you give to whomever has given you a hard time. Your car is a statement about modern design and comfort, and the choice you have made in not becoming part of the everyday herd. The aircooled oldskool is about a passion for antiques, and lovingly restoring or preserving them. To continually bag the vw scene is not the easiest way to gain acceptance regarding the new bug. There are undoubtedly numerous NB owners who are perusuing the forum but are afraid that they will not be accepted. Post like these act as a deterrant. Try to just let it go, as we are not all bad. You will get bagged, as do many others, of all different walks of vw!, trick is to learn to shrug negativity off and just walk away. There are bigger things in the cosmos to worry about. :kiss 馃檪

It is sad to hear that you are getting stick from anyone at all regardless of who they are!! Its just not cricket. I enjoy seeing all VWs new and old, i guess some people do not. I think if it is still your dream to own and drive your new bug then you should do it for sure, but I have a policy with myself and that is if i dont like something i will avoid it or not do it within reason (i dont like cleaning but i have to). The important aspect of my policy is that it is all about me, and whilst that seems a bit self centered and selfish it is important for eveyone to be happy and doing things i do not like does not make me happy so whats the point? I guess what i am saying is if the bagging you get makes you uncomfortable/unhappy driving the bug then you ought to do what makes you happy and if that means a change then so be it. Unfortunately you cant change the fact that you are effected by negative feedback (its like someone saying to a arachnophobe "its just a spider, it wont kill you!!")
It would be a shame to loose you from the VW sceen so have you thought about the VW golf. They are niiiiice I want the R32 but would be happy to get the gti (because its more affordable)!
Anyway thats just what i think.

I'd love a Lancia Aurelia, and I'd put a VW badge on the back so it fits in this post... I'd love a VW996 GT3... or a VW Lamborghini Miura P400, or a VW Daytona, or a VW Vanquish... I love mostly old cars.

mscabrio, If your car makes you feel good who gives a toss what other think it is all about you. I agree with the others, half are probably jealous. It is all about horses for courses, and when you are driving your dream with all the new goodies like air con and power steering comfy seats, smile and hope that the half wits who knocked you are sweating too death! My husband and I are in the process of restoring a 1971 Cabriolet beetle and no doubt to some it will be Oh its a superbeetle, not something else. We also own a Kombi camper and we did all the renovations ourselves and while it is not the best paint job it looks respectible and in my opinion has the best damn functional interior around and looks nice as well. I don't give a rats what people think. We like it. When we came down to Valla and others went and spent their money in the shops we boiled the jug on the cook top and had real coffee. I bet you find the later model Camper vws get bagged just as much, but ooh power steering would be nice as well as a reliable engine. I can,t wait to drive my convertible. Bottom line is if you feel at one with the car keep it. If you can't change the situation (people knocking new beetles) change the way you look at the situation. Pam
