I am currently deciding whether or not to pay $2750 for a 1967 type 3 fastback.
The car is being sold with roadworthy and reg. The engine seems good and the body is straight.
There is some rust coming thru the doors and a little in the underneath drivers side door sil. (is that easily fixed??)
The internals are tired and the paint is dull.
What do I do??????

mmm fastys are not my fav and were popular in there time, sounds like may be a little overpriced (just my opinion), do a search here on AVD for type 3's for sale and see what you find, but if you like it and are happy with the car what does it matter, my 2 worth

Are you happy paying that $$$ for it? What are the mechanics like? what does it drive like? etc

That price for a fasty with reg and RWC is not bad.
But,
Check the rust in the sill carefully as it is reasonably expensive to fix. Ask if you can remove the door trims and have a look inside, they're really easy to pull out. Also pull out the back seat and check under the battery for rust, or get under the car and have a look at this area. Give it a push, if it crunches, there's rust.
Ask for a service history and a list of all work the current owner has had done.
Dull paint can be made to look good with a wash and a light cut & polish as long as it isn't peeling or flaking. Same with the interior, seat covers and a bit of cleaning with Armorall will make it look heaps better.
Is $2750 the best price or can you haggle the seller lower?

Best thing to do would be to get the owners permission to take it to a mechanic of your choice (which you should be allowed to do). Get the mechanic (someone you know and trust) to give it a good look over and a report on any work that needs doing and any further costs that you may have to take on in the next 6 - 12 months.
I think that any good, solid car that has rego and RWC is worth $2K+, and considering it's nearly a 40 y.o car then good examples which are already roadworthy'd and ready to go are thin on the ground to say the least.
I think it's good value, particularly since (if you maintain it) the value is not likely to drop and most likely increase in years to come, so could turn out to be a nice cheap little investment, particularly if it's still sporting original interior, paint, etc..
Most of my friends are buying or have bought their first cars and are paying around the 3K+ mark for 20 y.o cheap buzz boxes that are causing them more problems than not, which again makes me think that a good early VW on the road for that money is worth it.
Ultimately if it's the car you want then you can't go wrong. I've done up a few VW's and before they even get to being on the road they have cost me well beyond that amount, so you will save alot of time effort and money by forking out for a good specimen to begin with.

Thanks a lot guys for your feedback.
The engine seems good, does not seem to blow oil which is surprising and it started easily.
The cost of getting it where I want it is the quandry. The rust would need to be dealt with and I would want to respray it and then the inside needs an overhaul........
If it was just me I would not be talking about it but then there is the little woman!
