LMAO!

.. yeh... like everyone else - too much, but still not enough as she's not moving under her own steam yet - hopefully for DOTVW though! (fingers and toes crossed!)

killakornkobb ·

i just added all this up yesterday.. and including purchasing the car itself.. i have spent 4,500ish..

buzzbug ·

about $6,000 so far.

bertie_beetle ·

when i hear the money that some people have spent on their bugs, my first reaction is to choke and scream 'holy crap, thats a lot of money'. however, considering the average cost of a new small car these days is around $15000 (quite conservative estimation i believe), if one was to spend that much on a beetle, imagine how good the car would be, heaps better than a stock model hyundai getz or barina or some shit like that. VWs are great investments ay?

Canni. ·

I've probably spent about $7000 all up... still lots more that I'd like to do... but there's no rust..and she's good mechanically now...just cosmetic stuff left

57kombi ·

not counting my time as I have done it all myself, I lost count at $12K, and I have a way to go yet.
Some might say its a lot but try getting stuff for splits!!!
Makes buying a finished one for $18K sound cheap.

Cheers
Dave

jonno-t3 ·

all up i think maybe $3500-$4000..but it isnt finished yet...and that doesnt include the mechanical thats getting done atm....:o

Resto64 ·

Craig Torrens ·

$9k for the buggy and its still about $5k from being finished....................about $20k on the 76' hillclimb car...............................about $10k on the 68' street car.............................about $2k on the 69'..................about $6k on the 54.....................$4k on the 58'...........................and $$$$$$ all over the place for the several cars worth of parts stashed away!!!

wacked1 ·

Craig whats your address again??

Julie-Anne ·

Spent $6700 on a 66 splitty sight unseen - it was in WA, we are in Melbourne, with no reg and no roadworthy....got it here for $500, had to spend another grand getting all the rust cut out of it and fixed up....still not registered or roadworthy...still has to be fitted out inside as it's empty photos of the car as it is and all the rust that was in the floor on the link below....

http://community.webshots.com/user/splitty66

But I still reckon I'd do it all over again. I love our splitty.

penguin ·

So far I reckon about $2100 for the car, and maybe somewhere about $2000 for bits so far. Now its at BuggyBrads to get some metal work done, then to a panel beaters to be cleaned and painted (have no idea what all that will cost :O) And will pay someone to check over the pan when I rebuild the bottom half it it all (Brakes, engine, gearbox etc).
So I figure if I get out of al for under $10k I will be a happy penguin 🙂

No pics with me here, but if 57 panel gets his camera downloaded you can see the shell on the way to Buggybrads.

penguin ·

Ooops,
forgot to add, I spent some on a type 3 in melb that has now dissapeared from sight without me knowing where it is 🙁 or word from the guy I bought it from.

Baja Wes ·

probably about $12,000 on the baja over about 9 years. Closer to $15,000 if you include the money wasted on VW engines that came and went too.

That's pretty good over that long time period I reckon. And it will hold it's value alot better than a new small car.

VWFREAK ·

I've finally decided the old KG lives on $ not fuel. Over 20k so far with plans for about another 15k, if the wife lets me.

LOWBUG ·

Over the last 12 years I've spent about $70- $90k and I havn't finished, the car was about 8 yrs was in getting it on the road and since then the last 4 yrs spent on about three engine setups along with rear disk brakes front end mods EFI and now its off the road again recieving another new engine set up again. And I've done alot of the work myself. I keep all the reciepts to torchure myself with.

Its a sickness I need help, now thats off my chest I can go back out into the garage and work on my bug.

Right?

Too scared to add it up, would take the fun out of it for me.

buzzbug ·

my wife keeps reminding me of how much i have spent.
so nice of her to keep tabs.:cry

kombipom ·

Take some comfort in the fact that everyones dull new cars are depreciating evey year where as ours are getting more valuable. 🙂

post some more pics of ur dub i love it!!!

is it a 68?

Brad ·

mmm I have spent to much but it has been less than I made or I wouldn't have any left to buy what I want ..........
:duh

LOWBUG ·

Dunno how.

The problem with a pic is that most of the money has been spent on things you can't see, you also can't see the previous engines etc.. spending money on an idea that didin't quite work and then re-doing it. Remember this is money spent over a 12 year period and it was a ground up build, with shell of pan, just about every nut and bolt was removed as well as a rebuilt gear box with a few extra tricks. Every thing that went back on the car was new(and man I've got all the paper work to show for it, but I like to torchure myself).

Even now I've got plans for further down the track after I finish the engine for the 4th time. It just dosen't stop it is a sickness I do need help.....help....please.

soulsurfer ·

currently about 13K and counting

lobus ·

12k.....if you say it quick, it doesn't seem as much.....
still better value than just about anything I can think of...those R type Valiants are a sweet ride though...and you can get a sweeet one of them alredy done for around 8 to 10 K

[Edited on 21-9-2004 by Dubnut]

62deluxe ·

Me spent about $13000 from memory.
That seems like alot but try getting the professionals to do it for that!

More to go yet, a full rebuild and twin carb conversion on the 36hp motor and gearbox reco etc etc etc...........

jenz58 ·

.....I don't want to count my receipts but try muliplying by 2 as a rough idea by the time you count all the bits you buy....well it'll go over that....Would never get it back.....it becomes a love job..... or sheer insanity....

Well I wanted to save my sweet $1200 Bel...she was a bargain when I got her.... Damn expensive woman to keep now!!! 😀

....this

[Edited on 21-9-2004 by jenz58]

robnjo ·

OK....now I do keep all my receipts...but I only show my wife one🙂
but hows this, since I joined AVD's, I have spent just on this site off you guys $3400.
also just parts on my splitty,$3220....holly crap and sort still looks the same as I got it off "Type_one"....then there is Ebay.....
.....but I do love Swapmeets:P

silver ·

16k on the Splitty, and 13k so far on the Bug, not including purchase price or my time But I have 2 cool cars and much much better than any new car. (except a Carrera 3 maybe)

Andy ·

Well, WAY too much like most of you.
Andy has had well over $20k spent on him (probably $30k, too scared to add it up). This includes purchase, 4 "parts" bus's, enough new spares to keep Andy on the road for many years to come and all the camping gear we used for our round oz trip :-).

My other VW's are not so bad, beetle came for free, and probably spent under $1000 in parts over the last 10 years. Type 3, $300 registered and driving :-).

57kombi ·

I have a P.O. Box and I buy things with money orders, that way the missus doesnt get to know how much i have spent.
I wouldnt put the real figure on here just incase she sees it.

Hello dear

Cheers
Dave

Y2K ·

Well i spent $35000 on the last one and $50000 on this one, over 4 years. But im a new owner and should probably BUTT OUT.😉

pete wood ·

67'bug: 3.5k and the $1800 motor was the best money I ever spent.

Buggy: bout 25k I think. Still fine tuning too. But I think that's ok considering the cost of some comparable projects. And it was my first full on project...so you always learn the hard (read expensive) way.

p.s. my wife says about the buggy, "we could have bought a new car for that much money", and that's true, but nothing nearly so cool or fast, 😎

yes it's a 68! in members rides.. the 68 Auto-Stick🙂

t2 ·

i guess including the purchase price ,the cost of all the tools (welders, compressors, spray guns) those things i wouldnt have bought if i didnt own a kombi sand paper and any other materials, it starts to really add up. then for me to be happy i had to buy all the extras like the westy rack, ladder, side step and make every window open.
so far i estimate around the 18k mark ,i still have to build a motor and do the interior , id say i need another 10k . imagine how much it would cost to get someone else to do it for me.
maybe i have made a few mistakes along the way and it could be better in areas but f--k it feels good to know that i am the only one to touch this car.
around 7k to build a bug wow i could have 3 and be running a wedding car buisiness

barls ·

my first bug was up around the $15g mark once we included the labour for 4 resprays, three engines, 5 head units and a complete retrim

billholmes ·

I have spent over $1500 and that is alot of money and i had to earn it.

ratty 63 ·

I'm not going to add up all the reciepts (which I have kept) as I'm sure that it will scare me!

...but, round figures, heres the list:

$2k for the EFI
$2.5k for the engine
$1k (so far) for the pan
$500 for baja kit (includes complete donor car)
$ not much for the body - but I haven't really started this bit yet!

...and thats just the major stuff, could probably add another $1000 for the little bits and pieces that I have hidden in the shed and have forgotten about. Won't even try to put an estimate on the time I have spent:duh

Lucky the car was given to me for nothing....

Hey Y2K, can I guess from you signature that you have been investing in CHIPS? (of the silicon variety...that would plug into a certain cars computer?) Sounds a bit fishy to me :puke

R

blk56 ·

56 Beetle
In the 7 years I have spent around $5 or $6 grand so far on 36hp rebuild ,gearbox rebuild pan blasted and resprayed black Maico disc brakes,Judson,Fram filter, rear popouts and other bits and pieces and I still need to paint the body and retrim the car I think another $8 to $10 should cover it.

What I would like to know Where everyone get the money to spend big dollars on their cars everyone must be doctors ,lawers or have great paying jobs
