Does anybody know if there is a bigger 'stock' brake master cylinder for a 1500 Beetle, like, say, one from a later T3 or Super? Or some other car (Golf, Commodore, etc)?
VWCOOL ·
Anyone?!
Secoh ·
i read somewhere porsche 944 was larger and interchangable but thats all I remember.

The one Pete Richards "gave" me is a type 2 dual circuit master cyl.
I don't know for sure, but is is bigger than stock.
A bit of modifying to the plunger and vioila
VWCOOL ·
okay - I will look into the specs of both. Thanks, kids!
56astro ·
try this one
And after all that,
it's probably just a beetle one??

err.. that looks like a stocky 1500...????

Sorry I don't have a pic of the master cylinder alone, or bolted in place....but this is the best I have on my puter - it is a golf dual circuit master cylinder installed by Custom Offroad. Part of the tunnel had to be clearanced (and hole cut in it to route the rear brake line through). Also a plate welded where it bolts through the frame.

Oh, found a pic of my mate's pan (58 k/l pin front IRS rear) that has had the same treatment - you can see the mods to the pan in this pic. This pan is for sale by the way.
Glenn why do you want something bigger its not always better
what mischief are you up to ??

Hi
I ran 4 spots front & rear with a stock 19 mm one. I just wondered what you were upto.
Steve
karmen ·
question for you guys re m/cyl.
fitting one to a KG but has 3 (one too many outlets)
can I block it off.
yes there is a later junction box to go to the pair of wheels
just checking if I'm wasting more precious time bleeding the bleeding thing (had the olde one apart 4 times)
1303Steve ·
Hi
Dont you need 2 for the front brakes? If not just stick another brake light switch in the hole.
Steve
karmen ·
not enough wires !! ha ha
actually done that as the new cylinder comes with a new light switch
vw54 ·
yes some cylinders come with 2 outlets for the switch
Steves car ran good with the stock cylinder
If it aint broke then dont change it.
Dasdubber ·
I have extra outlets on the golf master cylinder. I got a threaded brake line nut (minus the brake line of course) with a ball bearing that fits inside - tightening the nut in the master cylinder clamps the ball bearing to the m/c outlet and effectively plugs it.

Check this out for some ideas
They have some info on VW, Porsche, and Audi ones. They make no mention of the Golf one tho.

Okay. Yeah... Dave, Steve, that's kinda the mischief I'm up to! There's some engineers requirements that I might have to abide by regarding volume/displacement with worn pads blah blah blah and I'm doing some homework, just in case...

OK Das you will need to explain the need for the mods to fit the Golf master cylinder. Why didn't a dual circuit Beetle one do it for you????
VWCOOL ·
I assume that means a Type 2 MC (with a biggr bore) will slip-in with the same mounting holes?

There was several reasons we started using the Gold M/C. The mains ones where:
- the cost in relation to the RHD Beetle one ( not so expensive anymore ).
- Wanted to run the brake line down the tunnel to keep it out the way and the golf outlets let us do this.
- As it was originally for Buggies the Golf M/C came with a dual circuit bottle on top of it which was great for buggies.
- Lastly the valving in the Golf M/C is slightly different to the dual circuit beetle one and we found it better for the disc conversions on the lighter buggies.

Does the Golf MC have two different bore sizes, like a Porker 944 one?
