E-Mail from vendors

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/29061/e-mail-from-vendors

Whitty ·

I have just checked my home e-mail account and have an advertisement/sales pitch from one of the members of this site. Usually this wouldnt bother me in the slightest, but it has me wondering how they have stumbled across my address. Are they going through posts and checking peoples details for using on mailing lists, or have the admins decided to hand out addys?? I very rarely post on here, being more of a lurker than a poster, so it has me intrigued....I see the mob involved is online at the moment, so a reply would be great.

DoNkEy ·

i was wondering too...

am i about to get lots of Veedub spam?

Are sponsors or even just a passing joe able to access a list of emails?

The spam wasnt too bad..but i hope it is a one off

zac_smits ·

Yeh I can third that. I got it a while back..while not displeased..I didn't think it would come from AVD.

Zac

vanderaj ·

Well, they haven't asked me and I would outright refuse as it's

a) unethical
b) illegal under the Spam Act of 2003
c) illegal under the Privacy Amendment (Private Sector) Act 2000

as we have not collected that data from you (even if you supplied it voluntarily) for marketing or re-sale purposes.

I strongly suspect it's the vendor in question who has done this, and they've breached b) and open themselves up to prosecution under it.

I know for a fact it's very hard to get a listing of e-mails from the system without using the database. Brad and myself are approximately the total size of users who can do this in a reasonable time frame.

It's easy enough for Brad, Jim or I to send out an e-mail to all, appearing to be from Aussieveedubbers by sending a "newsletter" to all users. But I don't think we've ever done this.

Can someone e-mail me the spam? I *will* follow up, as I am very unhappy.

Andrew

vanderaj ·

I have disabled visible e-mail throughout the system. It's still in the database, but it will not be displayed anywhere publicly.

If anyone tries to farm us automatically again, the addresses are poisoned.

The only way you can find out someone's e-mail address now is to U2U them, and ask them for it.

Andrew

koolkarmakombi ·

They're also doing u2u

kkk

zac_smits ·

Quick to act.. Thanks Andrew.

Zac

Whitty ·

The e-mail and contents were not offensive in any way - I just wanted to know how my address has become public property...... 😠

BiX ·

they must have spent alot of time going through pulling emails out of posts to get them all. I got some and I don't want it.

baybuscamperkid ·

i dont reckon it could be from here, cos i know Im not getting any, only some from an american forum that Im also a part of.

VWCOOL ·

I got it via U2U. I don't really mind...
I think the company concerned just wanted to say 'Hi - here we are!' and is confident that it will be of interest to Aussie vee dubber people.

As long as I don't get YOU HAVE WON $1000,000 or GET A BIG COCK IN JUST THREE WEEKS!! type of stuff, I'll be happy. But I don't want 200 others...my day is full enough as it is!

vanderaj ·

I have asked the vendor in question to desist, and provided them a link to this thread.

Andrew

57kombi ·

So who was it.

Cheers
Dave

Bugged Again ·

I got it emailed as well
but it went straigtht into the junkmail folder
so no dramas

VWFREAK ·

I've been thinking the exact same thing. Next they'll be dumping vw porn on my email address.lol.

PurpleT3 ·

VW porn?
Big engined beetles, nude fastys, well sprung bajas! Bring it on!

Canni. ·

got it as well but it went straight to my junk folder... as it was vw related I don't really mind that much...

lobus ·

I got it too, my email is in my profile so I don't give a rat's whether I get mail or not. It went straight to my inbox though and I have it set to go to junk if the sender is not in my address book. just another thing about this ww web that I cant figure out...
I thought it was a bit resousefull of them though to approach me (and I guessed others) personally.

BenettonVW ·

I haven't got any of these.. Nor heard of this previously.

I think as admin I have sent one group email/ newsletter... EVER!

silver ·

A $100 gift voucher to each email address will stop my litigation.........

lobus ·

this is it...chapter and verse

Good idea, Well nothing wrong with self advertising.
If you list your e-mail on this site why shouldnt people use it.
At least they are trying to offer a service and not just sending the normal spam shit.

Cheers
Dave

HotRodMatt ·

Our family would like to thank Classic VW (Pacific) for the unsolicited SPAM.

You have guarantied that we will never purchase from you.

ClassicVW(pacific) ·

Hey Dubnut, he actually replied but he has changed his e-mail address to StNick@the north pole. To stop the spam hehe !!
We do sincerely apologise if we have caused offence, no malice or nuisance was intended.
Yes it was a one off, more of an introduction letter than a sales pitch. As VWCOOL said it is just a "hi, here we are"
Our E-mail has been received by many in the manner it was meant.
It does state that if you want to be on a mailing list please reply.
Again apologies if it caused offence.
Let me just tell you a story, there is a moral to it and you can make whatever judgement you like.
Today I was called by a fella from Sydney, who asked if I had any vent ears for his kombi, he had been searching for a while. I was heading towards a local VW garage, so I dropped in and they had some in stock.
I called him back and a deal was struck on my mobile without a cent coming my way. Believe it or not I did this to help a fellow Veedubber out. Then I get slated by a minority over an email which can so easily be deleted.
Roy

57kombi ·

Hotrod, grow up, you get one e-mail and you are willing to spend more money rather than use Pacific????

I suppose its your money.

Cheers
Dave

56astro ·

Yep, I got it and not worried one little bit.

I'm on heaps of mailing lists, CIP1 to name just 1 I get each month.

ClassicVW (pacific), if you have specials, please, PLEASE send me some "SPAM".

62deluxe ·

I agree, I got the "spam" and I wasn't worried in the least. I recieved my price list today after talking to Roy on the phone (top bloke). A friend and I are looking at setting up a business and I look forward to dealing with these guys alot in the future.
Seriously people get over it and see it for what it is. It's no different to getting a K-mart catalogue in the letterbox, I don't ask for them either but I still read 'em.
I have my e-mail address in my profile so no complaints from me.:thumb

jenz58 ·

Didn't get the spam...hope I don't now that I've meantioned not getting it...they may upgrade their spiders....

for some very strange reason d only spam I receive now is usually 4 VIAGRA? :jesus

....... not sure if I'm meant to get very confused now or not???

62deluxe ·

Hmmm, what websites have you been looking at?

57kombi ·

If you put your e-mail address in your user details expect mail . At least it was from an associated company that is trying to promote the scene and that can only be good for all of us, the more people that use companies that are run by enthusisats the better it is for the rest of us.

I was going to import a set of deluxe trim from Creative Engineering in England, the cost of the trim was $700, the postage was going to cost $700 and then there was import duty on top.
Classic VW (pacific) are bringing in the same stuff for $700, that saves me $700 plus the import duties, Am I going to stop using this company because they sent me an e-mail. NO because believe it or not I like saving money.

And yes I have seen Classic VW (Pacific)s price list and no one else in Australia can supply stuff as cheap as them.
I would like to think that as they are saving me a LOT of money , that I can help promote their business.
And again yes I do want them to succeed as the more people that buy stuff from them the longer this company will trade, that means a supply of cheap parts for my other project.????

This is not meant as an advertisement but I think that other companies have been ripping us off for too long.

Cheers
Dave

HotRodMatt ·

If you put your e-mail address in your user details expect mail
Yes but commercial spam is ILLEGAL. We did not overtly opt in for commercial mail.

If someone asks for info fair enough - well and good and should be encouraged.

silver ·

Also if we want to buy something we know were to find them, thats what forum sponsorship is for. I hate spam

ClassicVW(pacific) ·

Seriously fellas, this is one E-mail, an intro letter. If you dont want it delete it and do not reply, simple as that, you won't get another one.
Just checked my daughters E-mail address and its got 285 E-mails now thats the stage when you have something to gripe about.
Again I apologise if its caused offence, but please take it in the context that it was meant.
Silver, we are planning on sponsoring this site in the near future.
Maybe you would like to send out E-mails to all members regarding the proposed Aussieveedubbers show and shine, but clearly mark it "non-spam".
Oh yes we are still looking for sponsors of the trophies.

HotRodMatt ·

If another ausdubber sends me an email through that source is it spam?
if it isn't commercial in nature it isn't technically...

[qote]
so if an ausdubber who is setting himself up as a trader sends me an email informing me of his new venture I don't consider it spam.
[/quote]
Yes. This is the legal definition of spam. For Australian traders there are strong legal ramifications for sending out unsollicited email. He could have quite easily used a posted thread - which would have been accepted by most as fair. Not all businesses are in a position to sponsor the forum so I'm sure the occassional message here wouldn't be too badly accepted.

What is at issue here is using addresses here as a source of marketing information and sending unsollicited electronic messages. This is not only unethical but ILLEGAL in Australia.

Comparing the actions of an Australian trader to the constant and spamming of o/s shonks is pittiful and useless as there are no LAWS specifically banning the practice. For Australian traders there is!

If it wasn't a VW shop I would have reported it.

57kombi ·

Hey Roy.
Just look at the free advertising you are getting from this post.
Priceless.

Cheers
DAVE

warb ·

I get heaps of spam to, but it gives me gas, so my wife does not buy it anymore.....

also, regarding the emails, whatever, I have the prices and plan to buy...

Hey pacific, do you offer penis enlargements also.... now that's spam... :duh

HotRodMatt ·

The Spam Act covers electronic messages that are sent using applications such as:
* email
* SMS
*MMS
*Instant messaging

We have seen two sorts... email and u2u (instant messaging).

A business found to be in breach of the Spam Act can be fined up to $220,000 for a single day of spam activity. That was a pretty big risk you took there!

Commercial messages must only be sent when you have consent. This may be express consent from the person you wish to contact – a direct indication that it is ok to send them the message – that is to OPT IN.

Here is a copy of the Act from the Attorney-General's Department
http://scaleplus.law.gov.au/html/pasteact/3/3628/top.htm

From how long it took you to get the hint about following the rules for the buying, Selling and Swapping Forum I hope you don't continue to make the same mistake.

After speaking to our legal advisors regarding this episode it has even put the administrators of this forum again in a precarious position.

BiX ·

did any one watch the Chaser alst nite of the ABC. As john's son was being paid to send spam to all the ppl within howrads electorate. They went to the sons office and asked if he wanted more spam? before promptly dumping a wheel barrow of Spam on the door step?

HotRodMatt ·

Bloody pollies bullshit... I love the part in the act which specifically excludes election material from the legislation!

People should also be aware that little Johnny's son is also on staff for Dubya's re-electoral committee.
