We put the following idea to Jim, who has replied and suggested we put it to members for thier feedback.
Hi Jim,
Have been mulling over on a thought I had, I dont know whether you would be interested or if you have already done something similar.
How about a members show and shine, it would be more of a photographic skills competition really.
Members post a (1) photo of their vehicle(s) trying to highlight what makes theirs special, or their vehicle with a fantastic backdrop. Maybe not just a normal everyday photo of a car
Then a voting system by members to pick the best photo or photos split into types.
We would be willing to sponsor trophies or vouchers as I am sure others would too.
Would appreciate your thoughts
If this would cause an increased workload for you, I would gladly accept emailed pictures and I would get together a judging panel from my local area to pick the winner(s).
Its just a bit of fun and truly national, maybe an excuse for everyone to get clicking.
Good advertising for aussieveedubbers as I am sure VWMA would be interested too

sounds like a resounding yes to this. We will have a word with Jim and get it started very soon, probably give a time frame so that infrequent posters get a fair chance as well.
My initial thoughts are Type categories but styles are also important.Like I said its not necessarily the vehicle quality but how you see your vehicle and what could make it special and different to another, backdrop or presentation.
I am quite happy to sponsor this whole idea but if any other companies are interested let me know.
Trophies or framed photos with a plaque??

We are open to suggestions on judges, as it will be by E-mail, the judges can be from anywhere in the country. Thats the great thing about this, it will be truly national maybe even international

i think it would be a good idea, but you would have to have some clear rules so that there is no bitching. i would suggest that the entrants must be aussieveedubbers members of course, and the car picture being entered being their current ride. no 'past tense' posts. no touch ups, or have a seperate section called 'fantasie' or something. who could judge and be able to call a photo a touch up. would they need to be vouched for, maybe?
i am interested, but like most kombi owners maybe try to have different sections for various models, like they do with beetles. always psises me that real events class splits with fatchicks and so on.... sorry that last bit was my gripe. dont have to include :kiss

we thought that it would not necessarily be the best kombi or the best beetle, but 1 photo that really shows off what you believe is great about your ride, backdrop, witty, humerous or use (no nudity censorship rules must prevail!!!). So who cares if there is no bottom left in your car take a photo of it and enter it.
Yes the vehicle(s) must be owned by the person entering it.
No touch ups
Just a bit of fun

Submit one genuine photo (not touched up) of vehicle(s)
Must be owned by submitter at time of entry
Any angle, backdrop, use, subject, humerous, artistic etc etc (not necessarily the best vehicle will win but more of the way it is pictured?)

Clearly marked VW competition
Contact details Vehicle type, year etc
Time period of one month for entries
We will post photos in a reduced format on this site after closure of comp entries

Sounds like a great idea. Perhaps have judging from outside so as you don't just have people voting for their mates rides. Infact, perhaps even pick some non-VW judges like the staff at a non VW car magazine or something?

Mines like an Oil Painting - The Further back you get the better it looks.
Top Idea - Of couse I can't enter as I have no rego and my rides only half done. Regardless it will be good to watch. I just hope it's so successful that it will run again some day. This time when I go to Stockton, intead of sitting on my arse at sunset sucking back crownies I will be out shuttering.
Bring it on Gyols and Boies. Show us what ya got!

How about make it a top 12 of AussieVeeDubbers and turn it into a calender. That way you could have best split, best bay, best bug etc...
And sell it at events to pay for the site.

What size/resolution do the pics have to be for the calender? (for those lucky enough to be in the top 12)
Quite a few cameras won't be able to produce a pic with a high enough resolution to print well, even though they look great on screen.

Generally accepted "print" resolution is 300DPI.
Therefore @ 30cm x 30cm @ 300DPI you'd need about 12MP of image. Kind of out of reach of the average consumer still *cough*
Maybe a postcard calender would be more suiteable?
Lokita and I have printed off quite a number of 6 x 4's from my 3MP digicam and they've turned up great, 7 x 4's also quite nice, but by the time you get to 8 x 10's its starting to need about 1 foot viewing distance. Given the low end digi cam resolution now a days is 3MP and 5MP is becoming more common, I'd say maybe a 7 x 4 based calender could be the best approx size.

I would have liked more time, due to the size of photos we have had to go for A4 size instead of A3, but they look good and hopefully others will think so too.
This Calender runs from Feb 1st 2005 to Jan 31st 2006
Cost is $18 inc postage or $16 pick up
