Just wanting some opinions on the best oil to use for my 'new' 68 squareback. I went for the RWC check, and one of the issues was an engine oil leak. I'm not sure exactly where the leak is coming from, but could a thick oil possibly solve the problem? The car doesnt seem to blow any smoke, so I dont think it's burning much.
Also, what are the most common causes of oil leaks in VW engines, and what do some typical repairs cost?
I know this question is very vague but just looking for a starting point.
Cheers,
Steve

Changing the oil will NOT fix the problem and thicker oil is better than thin oils in Air Cooled engines..
Many people on Aussie Vee Dubbers use CASTROL GTX 2...
recommended by Castrol...
I also use GTX 2 ..
Most VW engines do drip or leak oil...
I believe they were designed to leak to stop corrosion etc to the engine... as an Oil covered engine won't corrode etc..
These days many people try very hard to stop the drips...
when an engine is overhauled... but it is hard to stop...

yup thats what a run in my 73 SQback and it loves it (except i keep overfilling it duh....)
i cant help you out with the oil leaking Qs but isnt there a bumper sticker that says "VWs DONT LEAK OIL>>>>THEY JUST MARK THEIR TERRITORY"
dont stress too much i reckon but maybe hunt down a good, honest, knowledgable VW mechanic in your area and make friends with them (it could be the beginning of a beautiful relationship) as they will definately have more of an idea than the guys who gave you the RWC cert.
there's my 2 cents (and as a disclaimer.... i dont konw anything tech-y or mechanical....)
good luck and yay for another type3 devottee - welcome !!!

If its an older engine use a standard type oil not a fancy new one with alot of detergents in it. this will wash out all the sludge n build up in the engine and casue an early failure.
What ever you use stick to it and do the changes regualrly

i was told if your engine is a bit tired to use thicker oils... looks like we need some clarifying from the experts🙂
you know, that really doesnt tell me wether i should be running penrite HPR 40 or 50 in my tired engine bug.
but it was entertaining😀

Thanks to everyone for their replies. I do expect an old VW engine like mine to leak a bit of oil, but the leak seems pretty severe..ie..the engine was full of oil last Monday and now it's basically empty. As I'm a newbie to VW's, I think the best bet is to go to a VW mechanic in Melb and get them to sort out any problems with the car.
Can anyone suggest a good VW mechanic in Melb that doesnt charge like a wounded bull?
Also, another RWC item the mechanic picked up the other day was for a drag link rod. Correct me if I'm wrong but I though the type 3's dont have drag link rods. If this is the case, maybe I'd better take my car elsewhere for the RWC as it seems they might be making shit up!
Cheers,
Steve

WTF???????????????????????
U was taught rather wrong.
If the RWC was pinged on a leak, simply degrease your engine and re-book it for an inspection.
Just around the corner from the mechanic, stop, straddle a gutter and get under and simply wipe off the oil with a rag.
as far as the mechganic is concerned, the leak is fixed.
THEN, yopu can determine exactly where thge leak is coming from and attend to it.
Did I actually read that leaks are built in to the engine to preserve the engine...................bwaaaahahahahahahahahahahah!
Good lord where did you dig that up from...........ROFLMAO!!!
Thats a %$^%$& ripper.....bwaaahahahahahahahaha.. thatll keep me amused for at least a week!!!!!!!
Good one dude..inhibit the outside of the engine.......bwaaaahahahahahahahahahahahahah! Classic!
Whats the right oil to run in a dak dak??? Run whatever you like M8. So long as its slippery!
Pay your money and take your choice.

Bwaaahaha I'll "WTF" whenever i like.
Now, ask yourself the question, was this "wtf" aimed at you or perhaps a simple exclaimation or question on my own part??? Hmmmmm?
Perhaps ask yourself this question before you level a "Mr high and mighty" smartarsed remark.
Its called "engage brain before putting mouth into gear"
VolksFolks, your engines dont leak because ther is nothing in there to leak out......fewl!
