Has anyone driven a vw from Brisbane to sydney or the other way around?

And how long did it take you?

vw54 ·

25 years ago in a Type 3 wagon na 65 Kombi

its about 12 hours straight through stop for Petrol n food

phantom ·

In 1986 I drove from Wagga (just a bit west-ish from Sydney) to Brisbane in my 71 bug. Trip is 1300 kms and I did it straight, only stopping for fuel and toilet stops (I was young and stupid) and did it in 13 hours. Half the trip was in the dark stupidly and in the morning I found that my car had almost changed colour at the front from the thousands of dead bugs.....

karmen ·

depends

will you speed (a little?)

which way you take.

how good is the ride??

school hols atmo

leave 8pm and get there 7am No traffic !!

VDUBXTC ·

I will be driving a manx from brisbane to newcastle.
I will be sitting on about next 90kph

Starbug ·

but now the next question is... has anyone driven brisbane-melbourne or vice versa in their vw, and would you recommend it?

Y2K ·

Yep did it straight through in 22 hours. Was funny to do three capital cities with-in 24 hours

VDUBXTC ·

would have been under water cooled steam wouldn't it Y2K

In 1997 I drove down to Sydney in a Baja Bus for the VW Shootout at Penrith, we had 3 drivers and I think it took about 12 hours........it was the weekend that Michael Hutchence was found dead in a Sydney Hotel room after wacking off......every single radio station had to play INXS songs the whole weekend only interupted with people calling in saying "I cant believe Michael is Dead......." :puke

Oasis ·

funnily enough it's even slower when you don't stop for petrol...

Starbug ·

no... really?
i would have thought you would go much much faster seeing you arent carrying as much fuel.
:P :P :P

BiX ·

did brisbane sydney return in a modified beetle for the bug in 2003, with very loud exhaust, and race suspension. under 11hrs with 3 stops for fuel (only enough to plash and dash with eating in the car). this was over easter long weekend, sat on the speed limit the whole way on the pacific highway. I drove it by myself, did have other cars going down, but not in convoy. remember;

1- always have correct spares
2- where ear plugs in a loud car
3-must get a stereo for the car!!
4-don't offer to give the ex gf a lift.

I will be flying up
the buggy has a 2ltr type one motor with a single webber and twin hotdog exhaust

I don't think i will be able to hear much by the time i get back.
But i don't want to push it to hard as i don't know how reliable the thing is
.

make sure you check the oil level on flat level ground after the car has been sitting for a while, if you have been driving it.

fill up with petrol then park the car pay for petrol and check the oil last.

OZ Towdster ·

Remember in a manx if it has large rear wheels it is not reving hard anyway, just sounds that way and as long as the oil presure stays over 250 kpa at 100klm and the temp around 100deg its all good. should take you approx 11hours from Brissy to Newcastle, thats what it takes me in the Towd and despite what other people say i dont speed i just dont slow for corners and only stop for fuel and food preferbly at the same spot.

11CAB ·

Hey Andrew, didnt the NSW government take a happy snap of the Towd on the way to Valla this year?? :thumb

VWCOOL ·

Yeah I drove my hottie Oval up for the VW/Fast Fours Jamboree in 1994, I think. Drove up Friday via Armidale, drag raced Saturday (after changing my starter motor in the Willowbank car park... grrr) and drove home Sunday via Pacific Highway. I will never forget the look of surprise on a V8 Capri driver's face as I overtook him and another car somewhere near Grafton - he, of course, had to follow me through... and then he found out how well a Beetle can pull up from 160+ kays an hour... cos Capri's can't... he nearly rammed me up the tail. He kept his distance behind me after that.

What was the question again? Time? Um, give yourself one hour travel time for every 90 kays you need to travel. Works for me... no ,matter what you drive. Assuming you can do 110 when its legal?

hehe yeah but i still do the speed limit

Id probably say about 10 (or 11) hours from brissy to sydney
There's a short-cut at Grafton that cuts off about 15 mins, it all helps.

Grey 57 ·

drove the grey oval to Valla last year. 2 days each way.
Left Nambucca Heads at 4.00pm Monday and hit Sydney Road, Melb at 6.00pm Tuesday.

VDUBXTC ·

Sweet guys.
Thaks for the help.
I think it will take me around the 14 hr ,ark as i am not going to push it at all.
I want it to last so i can go to stockton in November😀:bounce

BiX ·

That hort cut is great, cuts a good 15 mins of.

Brad ·

if you are flying up to buy a manx sight unseen I strongly suggest you get someone to check it out first as I have looked at a few lemons in the last few weeks.....

KruizinKombi ·

You're still looking at manx's Brad??? Have you finished the mega-manx yet? :bounce

lobus ·

done melb-valla twice now..
done valla melb twice as well.
if you are gunna drive bris - melb stop some where along the way and have a proper sleep and a shower in the morning...
it is a long drive without a break and the flea pit motels on the highway are cheap as chips...
on the way home from valla this time i went valla to albury with a co driver, at one stage we stopped and had a bit of fresh (about 2degC) air and the trucks were almost bumper to bumper at 110ks. the road was a single carriageway and I have been driving for a long time but it was the scariest thing I have ever encountered...no more night time hume highway for me...or me 1.6 boxer powered red rocket...

Always looking and no :duh

Starbug ·

i noticed on the trip tp melb last year in my parents corolla that the trucks werent that bad and were quite courteous to us little drivers (unlike the hume highway the year before where i watched in fear as my friend drove his volvo amongst a maze of speeding semi's)

as im planning the trip down in the bug next year, i guess the only thing i need to watch for is roos.
dp those roo repeller things you put on your car actually work??
