vw54 ·

So looks like your on line again Pete

restocal ·

Wot are the brackets either side of the spring plates?

barls ·

nice speed flow hoses mate

vwfastback ·

Did you solid or rubber mount the stabilser bar under the gearbox?

Can you still get Pedders 90/10's made? I got mine a year ago and was told that they have a 70+ yo guy who has been doing this for ever. Once he finishes though, they were no longer going to offer 90/10's.

Well done on the times.

James C.

pete wood ·

did you make all the struts and the berg front mount yourself?

why do your rear drums have holes drilled all through them?

are you using wheely bars?

OvalGlen ·

thanks for sharing those ideas,
I wonder if my brother would mind me taking pics under his Beetle - might be interesting.

seagull ·

I am all in for mods lighted drums ect , the top photo looks like you have run the brase back to the shock mount , does this just form a triangle for strenth ?
The mount under the box looks like nylon 11 to me , I have not see it doen this way before .

Dak-A-Tak ·

Yep,Dave, thanks for your help.May be a few tricks on your car may help your ets!!!!!!!. I got on a little late to ring you back. Q1 .The spring plate retainers stop them twisting or jumping off stop in a mega moment at high speed( side-ways or crashing).Under spring plate is a solid alloy block which stops swingaxle from tucking or lifting when backing off after a race. The block is bolted though steel brackets( second bolt from bottom).Q2.Push-lock fuel hose is great product and easy to use. Main fuel-line is hardline alloy tubes with fittings welded on them.Q3. The berg mid-mount was made by me and the blocks are solid alloy becouse the motor is solid mounted. For steet, use urethane.Q4.Shocks are HQ-HZ Holden ,made from new (not revalved). They have 1inch travel more ,in each direction.( in and out-stock height beam or slightly lowed). Uses hiem joint on top with custom bolt.Q5. Drums drill for rotate weight( less weight ,faster times). Front done as well. Q6. No wheelie bars on this car ( let it wheel stand ) ALL steel car with racing wheels and bit over 1/4 full fuel tank of fuel- 1764 lbs in weight with driver( 11.92et 109mph). The new rear shock tower brace, goes from Engine forks to shock tower (left) then across to other shock tower(right) then down to over side of engine forks. This brace ties forks and pan together and shock tower as one. After made this brace ,through Engine hope bracket into the bin!!!!!!!( 1.54 sixy foot times) NO engine shake.

[Edited on 28-9-2004 by Dak-A-Tak]

pete wood ·

do you drive the car much on the street?

what's it like with the driveline hardmounted?

Dak-A-Tak ·

YES,we drive it all the time ( to shows, shops, just cruizing),the only time the car is trailered is to the drags , Just case we brake it. The track is over a hour away from home. Solid mounted motor is a little noisy but as you squeeze on the 48ida's who cares any more. Driving is a little tricky on taking off , little more revs then usual (2000 to 2300) becouse of kennedy clutch and solid disc. The solid alloy diff ( spool) is very tricky but you just don't go fast on corners ( straighten them out ) but all of this just gives you another style of the vw bug.

wacked1 ·

You mentioned Kennedy clutch, do you have a hydraulic or cable clutch.
And what stage clutch is it.
cheers
wacked1

Jenny ·

What did you make your engine-to-shock tower brace from & what diamerter is it?

Dak-A-Tak ·

The clutch is a early 2700 lbs( green colour) with Berg shoe fitted to meet Aust drag rules(Doesn't have that lbs,has about 1700 to 1800 lbs from new ) TRUE!!!!. No cast, shoe aloud, may explode and break through gear box .Clutch cable used, with late long throw out arm and throw-out fork welded. Q2, Engine to shock brace was made out of beetle tie-rods arms .Cut and rewelded in the middle to keep them left and right handed threads so you can tension it up. I even used the vw tie rod ends cut off behide the nuckel. Then cut a slot for the bracket ends ( look at photo's).Then drilled and bolted together. Sum tie rod ends where welded thicker on the ends.Lot of work but very cheap and recycle old vw parts.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Rods , 48ida, blue beast is getting sum new bits before
next race meeting! We have allway none that the exhaust
was to big (2inch) ,so time to change back to 1 3/4 header , as inlet valves are 44 and 38 exhaust in a welded
vw head. Rod Penrose ,track down a A 1 lowdown header
for him. This system keeps 2&4 pipes out to the sides which give you more clearance at rear beaver panel(heat)

All so replacing springplate, cover plate and bushes with
solid billet JCL made retainers .Less flex at springplate and
torsion bars .Better for hard launchs and smoother springplate movement.(blue Rods and black for yellow car)

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Can't wait till Mini Jam to see the difference the new exhaust makes. I'll be there hands at the ready for the usual jobs....

Dak-A-Tak ·

Over week-end fitted new 1 3/4 A-1 header .Very nice
system but had a few issue's with stud holes ( 10mm instead of 8mm ) to slopy and not enough room at No3 bottom stud and No4 bottom as pipe dropped to
fast .
Shorten all studs ,cut down two 11mm nuts ,made steel
tube spaces for stud holes .
On third fitting all done. Don't like bolts used in alloy vw
heads (strip easy)
Fitted oil filter but had to change oil lines around a bit.
New spring plate retainers are wrong ones (hole to big)but
have ordered standed size replacement .
Mini Jam are two weeks time!

Dasdubber ·

Looking good Pete (and Rod!).

Pete can you tell me how the remote filter mount works? Obviously there is one line in from pump, then one line out up to what I assume is the oil cooler above gearbox, and the other - is that just a return to the sump? Forgive me ignorance!

Bugger about the wrong size JCL retainers - hope the new ones arrive soon!

Alan

pete wood ·

very nice. :thumb

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

I've seen the Geer's Engineering filter assembly with my own eyes and it's awesome. Prescision machining at it's very best.

Tough luck with the exhaust Pete. Persistance pays off though and a job well done. Now to see the performance difference....

RAZ34 ·

I'm keen to take it to Summernats to run in the Dyno comp. This years winner recorded 86.15 rwhp. I mentioned this to Pete and almost had him until I said we should also enter it in Tuff Street.
Hopefully I can contine my Warwick winning streak at Mini Jam so Brennden, can you wear the same clothes you wore that week-end.
(Al , Pete will answer the technical question )

[ Edited on 21-3-2007 by RAZ34 ]

Dasdubber ·

Cheers Rod - I am hoping to make it out to mini jam to watch you guys. If not, hope all the preparation (and racing) goes well - look forward to hearing about the results!
Al

Dak-A-Tak ·

Yes ! I agree !does look good:thumb Allan- oil line from pump goes to cooler then ,to oil block (filter).Out of oil block to normal entry of motor .Out side hose on filter
block is 80lb bypass line to sump. (big brass fitting you see)
The other you see from head is a return to sump as well .(each side ) big rev fill up tappet covers so it helps to get all the oil back to the sump.
Rods case is duel relief type ,the relief valve at flywheel end is wound shut . Check out VeeDub Parts Unlimited web site.
See you at mini jam and bring oval so you can park in side (more vw's the better) Allan.

The trusty RBT shirt eh LOL. But you guys did chip in and buy me one to look the part so should I wear that one instead??? Or is it time for team shirts????(colours to hide stains from working on cars would be nice!!) should be a good weekend with a decent field in All motor from what Ray Box was telling me the other night.

Dak-A-Tak ·

I keep Rods post about his beast(48ida) continue on .
New roll cage up date for safety reasons ,hopefully helps car to wheeeeeeelie !!!

063bug ·

Any more updates/photos?? :bounce

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

I'd imagine after the weekend if all goes well there will be some more pics and time slips....

RAZ34 ·

We took it for a run at Willowbank last Wednesday night. Car feels safe and sound with new cage and seat. I managed 3 two-step launches . 2 were OK. Pete might put some video up when he has time between building and maintaining all the cars. Thanks to Pete and Dave B for looking after me on the night.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Rod had 5 runs ,best was 12.16sec at 108.88mph .Best mph on night was 109.65mph and best
60ft was 1.602 . All so half track was quick at 7.64sec 88.86 mph but top end was a little off (Air ,humidity ) We made a few carb changes but didn't ,show any gains .
Car times should be good 11.90's with the above mph and sixty foots .
Happy but no eleven sec pass gives me a headache!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Boostn ·

What a Hot "ROD"..........get it? hahaha

very impressive times dude, it would put some turbo cars to shame!

063bug ·

Any more pictures of various components of the car that have been customised to match the engines performance.....😁

Adsman ·

Very nice work. Keep us up to date with your progress.

063bug ·

Sorry to bring it up but are there any updates on the events of the Warwick Weekend.

dangerous ·

Looks like the Crown wheel and peanut is broken.
It was a Klingelnberg 4.125. Perhaps a stronger tooth form next?
Good excuse to change the ratios for more rpm!

Rod will most likely run his engine in the chop top car for the Jamboree Re-run.
Perhaps elevens in that car?

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Second that one dangerous. There was a lot of metal in the oil when we drained it and a few bigger bits as well. Troy also could feel some larger bits of teeth through the drain hole that wouldn't fit through it. So it should be good to see it when Pete pulls it apart. In the mean time Rods engine into the choptop for the Jamboree. Now that should be good!!!

Dak-A-Tak ·

Yep !! crown wheel let go but pinion teeth still intack .Broke teeth, deep down on crown wheel . Spool fine ,axles fine ,gear box case fine .
Yes , we are ! going to put Rods motor in choptop for Jambo rerun ,Nov 3
With motor and box out ,you can see rollcage bars down to forks

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

A couple of tubes of devcon should get it back together shouldn't it???LOL

Good work ROD!!!

Dak-A-Tak ·

Mini Jam is on the week-end after Portland so Rods car has to ready before hand . Dangerous has work wonders again repairing tranny .
Over last week-end fitted all back together and finally fitted spring plate retainers ,found that the bushes pounded out quite bad on both side of car. Had to pop spring plate down off stop so to get bolts to line up (longer bolts ).All so found outer right side with rust pits ,that wound damage new brass retainer ,so change spring plate .
Decided to leave out inner urethane bush .They say that the brass bush free's the movement (travel) up ,which helps car taking off and stop toe in when everything pushes forward (worn bushes ).
Was looking for a test run at track tonight but weather looks crap here .!!!!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

There was a storm out that way just after lunch. My neighbour was out there on a drilling rig and it poured rain, thunder and lightening so doubtfull it TnT will go ahead as weather is mighty unstable.

Good to see the spring plate retainers finally in their new home Pete!!(and the right ones too)

Stanley ·

Yep been raining Amberley most of the day

Dak-A-Tak ·

Sorry about above pic's ( moved them to new folder and stuffed up link )fixed them !!
We have put the new 2387cc motor back in car after a few issue's ( oil pressure poor , too much comp , oil o-ring missing from flywheel ) Dangerous went through engine with a fine comb and all things fixed . Have drivin beast around alittle and all well so far . A couple little jobs ,then back up to willowbank soon .

reub ·

Can't wait to hear more on how it goes down the strip Pete.
Video would be good too dude👍

vassy66T1 ·

Looking good Pete and Rod.

I am keen to see it run soon ... T&T ??

HEY PETE & ROD
LOOKS GOOD GUYS
SHOULD BE HEAPS OF FUN TO DRIVE
HEY ROD "MAY BE THE BEST IN YOUR LIFE"😂😂

RAZ34 ·

Dont start. I'm still dirty we didnt go there.

RAZ34 ·

Also Pete has done another great job on the car . Looks good , sounds good and I suspect should scare me .

vassy66T1 ·

Don't you go out to the track unannounced!!
Dying to hear and see this . .

oldskl60 ·

Looks very sweet indeed! Nice job Pete and Rod
Looking forward to seeing some wheels up action!!

Boostn ·

Looking good guys!

davidoconnor ·

Fantastic stuff!! You guys must be itching to run this thing.
What's the go with the fuel line, has it been redirected to avoid the bellhousing? What's the theory with the heat shield?

Can't wait for the updates.

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Not a lot of cooling system on this engine and with the fuel line running where it is vapour lock could be an issue?

Dak-A-Tak ·

Thanks vw friends , getting real close . Dave , fuel line comes in behide left carb and thats where reg is mounted .Plus I wanted real simple setup that I didn't have to crawl under car to adjust fuel pressure and this car keeps changing motors on me ( Rod can't help him self) . Yes Brennden is correct too ,Lots of heat from stanless exhaust , all so running pully and front tin to help keep heat out .
Maybe next week out to track if all stars line up .👍

STOCK ·

SOUNDS GOOD PETE , GOOD LUCK
BUT FOR ALL US POOR SAPS DOWN IN SYDNEY
WE NEED VIDEO FOOTAGE """PLEASE"""👍👍

Don't forget when the fuel pours down your arm and into your top for that lovely feeling when disconnecting the lines from underneath the car. Good move Pete.

Good luck guys!

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Wednesday night T/N/T??

colonel mustard ·

Don't forget when the fuel pours down your arm and into your top for that lovely feeling when disconnecting the lines from underneath the car.
Oh yeah, love it.... NOT.

Joel ·

bah wait till u get a stream of it in the eye colonel then youll know why i now have an off/on valve below my fuel tank 🤪

Dak-A-Tak ·

Nick , so true there ! 14Plus fuel is nice and cold but at around $180 for 20 ltrs I don't like spilling any !
All so having that long piece of fuel hose , I can undo from carby tee piece and It will reach to back of car into bucket for cleaning out main fuel line or testing pump .
Up front I don't have on/off valve but with Pushloc fuel line I clamp it closed . All pump and filter are fitted in spare tyre area .
With petrol I have to be real careful how much I touch it or smell it ,as it makes me real sick fast nowdays . To much washing parts over the years with the stuff. 🙁

colonel mustard ·

Joel wrote:bah wait till u get a stream of it in the eye colonel then youll know why i now have an off/on valve below my fuel tank 🤪
done that too.... sadly. valve sounds like a good idea. espcially if your leaving a car outside or going away for a longish while... you can only drive so far on a small amount of fuel.

13BVW ·

So how did you go tonight Rod😀

matberry ·

How does 11.47 @ 117 mph sound....?

dangerous ·

Car went well.😁
1.57 sixty foot time and 7.3 at 93.5 to the 1/8 mile.
Also ran a 11.67@117.14mph.
that run, as with the 11.47 (117.31) were on the 7800 limiter thru the finish.

Just needs some fine tuning of mixtures now.
Pretty fast car.

Boostn ·

Pretty fast car.

Shit yeah,

that thing is flying!!!

Awesome stuff guys!

reub ·

Awesome stuff

Stanley ·

good stuff guys...👍

wish I could've been there.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Dave ,your memory is real good mate . Yep , was quite a good night , after quick fix of throttle peddle after Rod bent it over centre . We didn't touch the motor at all , no leaks , no changing a thing , just seat time for Rod .
Air was quite good ,so was track with group 1 cars testing all week . Next time out we will play with jetting , rev's , get alittle more serous with this new bullet !
Thanks to the helpers from Rod , Dangerous , Col , Me .

Dasdubber ·

Congratulations guys, that is really honking now. Can't wait to see it run again soon!
al

hellbugged ·

one fast NA package now, nice work everyone!

video?

A 1200 is slow ·

Mate, that is fast!!!
That would have to be one of the fastest full bodied n/a cars around wouldn't it?

Boostn ·

Guys, 200 @ the wheels?

AWESOME !!!

dangerous ·

No dyno yet.
My guess is between 190 to 200, but not quite sure of car weight....1700lbs?
"Guess jetting" is close, but still more to come based on small amount of data that was actually recorded from the lm1.

dangerous ·

After the first couple of troubled/aborted passes,
the good run was progressing down the track quite cleanly.

When I heard the limiter popping as it went through the finish,
I thought, cool! (all the while, not knowing where Pete had set it)
But when 117 came up on the time boards I was really shocked.
The 11.47 et was a big bonus.

After going through the engine initially a couple of months ago,
I realised it was going to be pretty stout if the rpm could be kept high.
This was based on the port's size and cam lift.

But the 117mph was above my expectations.
I am not sure what Pete and Rod were expecting,
but I know Rod did not believe us when we told him the pass was an 11.47 at 117mph.

davidoconnor ·

Wow, fantastic effort guys, 117MPH!!
That bug's really pulling some horsepower now.
Have you guys dispensed with the flat tappet set ups now and gone roller?

dangerous ·

Hi David,
still flat tappet.

The engine is actually very simple 2387.
Still has mag case and all but the heads are off the shelf parts.
Even just an 8 dowel crank.

I never had a chance to flow the Competition Eliminator heads,
but know that they have 48 inlets and 39.6 exhaust valves with a fatter than stock stem.
I would say port size would be similar to in your avatar.

There were a few important assembly details that needed attention from its original owner in the USA,
but now it is all sweet.

If Rod and Pete are happy,
I can list the specs.
More the merrier I say for fast Volksies.

Boostn ·

dangerous wrote:its original owner in the USA,
Is it a buy in? how disappointing!!!!!!!!!

Why?

dangerous ·

Rod bought it from the USA and it was a collection of parts left over from a racer.

I spent 27 hours re doing the whole thing after it had leaks, pinging and no oil pressure,
before it even went down the track.

So it is essentially an Australian built engine.

The fellow who originally owned it WAS honest and genuine
about everything that it contained,
it just needed a little more detail time spent on assembly and machining.

I would consider any assembled engine as just a "box of parts" myself....no matter who assembles it.
I then go through everything and know in my mind what is "in there" at the start line.

Boostn ·

ok so what you are saying is Rod bought those parts cheap in the form of an engine instead of boxes.

It would be disappointing if he paid good money for it thinking it was a ready to race engine, but as it turned out you guys were going to rebuild it anyway. Cool Dave lucky you had a spare 27 hours........ nice work

vassy66T1 ·

Great to hear it ran so well and without any more troubles !!

What a great number to run 😎

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Rocket Rod is back!!

congrats Pete and Rod also Dangerous for sorting out a small smal issues.

117mph and hitting the limiter... damm!!

davidoconnor ·

Dave,

I'd love to hear some of the details on this motor if it's OK with Pete and Rod.
My 2387 can't touch those numbers. Best 1/8th so far is 7.7 at 89MPH, running the Porsche fan and with muffler. I'd be interested in comparing specs. My peak HP on the dyno is at around 6500?! This has always baffled me considering the port size and cam duration (278 at 050).

Congratulations guys you've just lifted the bar big time!
Now it's up to the rest of us to play catch up.

RAZ34 ·

I think Pete was expecting that sort of time from the car , maybe not from the driver. The runs didnt feel that fast as the car drives so nice . The guys fooled me on the 11.47 run as they all looked disappointed as I returned to the pits. I thought it might be OK as the only way i can judge a run is by how hard it is to pull up . Thanks to Pete for spending so much time getting the car fool proof and to Dave for the motor and box. Thanks also to Col for making it to the track a day or two after his hospital release . Happy for Dave to share the specs.
Sorry about the reaction times Henry.

matberry ·

Well done Rod. Col tex'd results of that 11.47 before you even made it to the pits.😂😂

Lifted the bar all right....way up. Very good work to you and the boys, congrats.

STOCK ·

WOW GUYS AWSOME RESULT
1700 POUNDS & 11.47
GET SOME WEIGHT OUT & HOLY SHIT !!!

dangerous ·

Boostn wrote:ok so what you are saying is Rod bought those parts cheap in the form of an engine instead of boxes.
Yes it was cheap Nick.
Much less than it would cost to buy the separate parts.

David,
when you factor in the lighter car,
no belt and muffler,
and the extra comp that rod has,(I assume yours is less than 14:1!),
you are right there.

I will find the build details and post up some assembly pics.

dangerous ·

The crank is an 8 dowel 86mm scat with type 4 centre main and 2" rod journals.
Cam is Clay Smith with 280@.050" and has .615" lift at the valve.
(Rockers are the standard cast Autocraft with 1.4 ratio.)

I made an extended pick-up from steel tube,
and silver soldered it on so no leaks.
Sump is 5 quart CB sump.

Case is just an ordinary magnesium AS41 deal with 10mm head studs.
Dizzy is MSD with advance locked at 28 degrees.

Oil pump is an EMPI 30mm cast unit.
I had to machine the back off to align the inlet hole,
and while I was there,
I radiused where the port entrance meets the gears.
I also plugged both the pump and the case at the outlet port.

dangerous ·

The rod are 5.7 Carrillos.

Replaced the cast FW with a genuine VW steel one and resurfaced the clutch surfaces.
I located the clutch with roll pins before balancing the crank, FW and clutch.
The step height was set to get the correct pressure and geometry.
Note the large hex nut...it needs all the help it can get in the dowel area.

The pistons are Wiseco in AC cylinders with .005" clearance.
(While talking clearances, all crank journals have between 3 and 3.5 thou.)

Gaskets are .040" thick.
Comp ratio was between 17.46 and 18.19...so this has been reduced to 14:1.

Chambers:

Ports:

Valves had been rubbing on notch diameter:

And valve clearance was too close, so this was changed, when comp was reduced.

Valves ,retainers, and collets are Ttanium.
Springs set to travel of .700".

The seal holes in the heads,
for the push rod tubes, needed opening up , and the washers on the tubeswere too large,
thus preventing the seal from seating,
so they were turned down.
No leaks!!

Finished:

(ported some new gaskets ready to fit the 51.5mm IDA's.
Pete says they have 46 vents, 195 mains(F7) , 220 airs and 65 idles.(correct me if I am wrong).
Data says perhaps a larger idle jet, smaller main and smaller airs should be better,
but up around 7800 all is sweet.

Boostn ·

Nice work Dave.
Rod now needs to update his plates....hahaha

still one of my favs.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Good one Dave , your pic's are ART for us volksy nuts ! All parts where new on motor except cam (was a secet grind for drag racing ) . Was much easier buying from well none vw drag racer as a new turn key motor but we had a couple oiling issues so a complete look inside was needed . This when Dave work his magic again found comp very wrong ( 17.4 not 14.1 as paper work )
We notice the motor pinged on first burnout we did at earlier test & tune we went to . We had low oil pressure once motor good hot so Rod turned it off ,to come back another day .
Barrels - JayCee long , Melling cast iron oil pump with empi cover . Comp Eliminators ,these heads work well out of box but with hand porting , large titanium valves ,good cam , 51.5 carbs all add up to sweet allmotor combo .
Carb jetting is correct Dave , carbs came with that setting but a much smaller main jet so I richened it up .
So not perfect yet but a good start . Next - Rod ! I want a drive !😂

Craig Torrens ·

Congrats to all........what a great result.

HS618 ·

Wow - Congratulations to all contributors for the excellent performance - the effort shows!!.
Rod, I don't see anything wrong with the reaction times (it's nearly finished and ready to burn____!)

davidoconnor ·

Dave,

Thanks for sharing all the details and pics, inspirational stuff! Compression really seems to wake these motors up. I remember reading about the likes of Mike (?)Smith's drag Bug and Roger Crawford's Bad Company Beetle in the States. With sub 2l engines they were running deep into the 11's. Over 14:1 compression in both cases and over 8000RPM, yikes!!

Top effort to the Dak-A-Tak team.

vassy66T1 ·

Love the pics of the build up.

You must be proud of what it is (Rod, Pete, Dave) and the results for its first time out.

westi ·

lookin good,but were's the vid's.not happy jan.
tell rod .may be the best of your life.lol,
the mad texan (Rod) must be happy and you pete must be alittle green with envy.you know you want to have a go.
tell rod that you need to do some more testing in your car before putting it in the black drag car,you know ,just to make sure everything is tip top.
can't wait to see her in action.
when is that show that you wanted to go to.

reub ·

Gotta ask, was there any video footage of the run??

Dak-A-Tak ·

Sorry mate ! no footage on that night , hard to crew and film but we are heading out to willowbank (25th July) part of Dyno Mania 2009. Are you still coming down for Warwick ,mate ?

reub ·

No stress Pete. Cheers for the reply.
I've a leave of absence approved by Rach - so plan to be there - unfortunately without either of my cars. Look forward to seeing the action and meeting a bunch of guys I read about all the time👍

Dak-A-Tak ·

Well , I think Rod was a little happy after Dyno Day 😁 with new engine making nice power and taking home dyno operators chose award too .
With big chokes engine has a quiet a big lazy window around 4 to 5000 rpm but after that it's an animal . So I'm sure with more tuning this motor should make the 200hp mark !

vassy66T1 ·

Sounded sweet at the track on Sat nite!!

What diff set up does the gearbox have? Open?

hellbugged ·

aluminium spool back on page 2.......hoping to watch it run hard again for a while again at Warwick 09.......

davidoconnor ·

Wow thats some RPM on the dyno! If this was done in 3rd gear, thats around 8K!!?

dangerous ·

Wait to see what happens when it gets a tune up!

vassy66T1 ·

Good figures in the air ... Rod or Pete should spill the beans. 😵

dangerous ·

218.9
With Muffler...can that be true!?

dangerous ·

Or was that, "I ate a 218.9 gram Muffin".

Yep!!!!!!! but was a liittle lean guys on that run (we keep no secrets here boys ). We had 13 dyno pulls , trying muffler , clossing up mid range with top end A/F ratio's , timing up & down , stinger , rev's , heat range oil to motor temp , learned alot today . Quick brake down ; 2387cc , 14to1 comp, racing fuel 14plus,51's IDA's ,comp eliminators 48 x 40 ,msd 6al .All runs done in 4gear too.
1 / From start with muffler 199 hp ( 195m's , 220 airs ,f7 emulsion, 46 ven's, timing 28 deg's
2/ 206 hp 180 m's
4/ 214.3 hp f11 emulions
5/ 218.9 hp full throttle at 100klms ( to lean at mid range A/F )
6/ 214.6 hp made a change to 210 airs , pull at 180f oil , A/F 13.2 mid to 12.5 high end .😵
7/ 208.1 hp cold motor , oil 150f
8/ 201.7 hp as above change timing up 30deg's & lean at mid range 🤪
9/ 211 hp timing back 26deg's ,motor warm & oil 170f (wow)
10/ 207 hp STINGER ON , LEAN !!!!!!!! 14.1 A/F 😬
11/ 209.7 hp changed mains 190 , A/F 12.5 (good)
12/ 204.6 hp changed timing up 28degs
13/ 212 hp Blocked stinger off (half of openning ) more back pressure 😂
We started at 10.30 finished at 2.30 , temp changed from 26degs to 30.6 deg's through out day . All this information could never have happened at race track conditions .
Over all very happy (Rod spending time and cash ) with results ,now we are looking forward to Warwick .🙅

Bloody awesome to hear guys! Can't wait to see it run...

When are you heading to Warwick? I'll be there Friday arvo and look forward to catching up Pete.

matberry ·

Well done Pete and Rod. Very good results there. Thanks for sharing.

Stanley ·

awesome stuff guys....👍

LIFE IN THE LOW LANE ·

Money well spent I say. Now to sort out running a stinger with a lil more back pressure!!

dangerous ·

Explains the reverse taper you see on a lot of the stingers.

typethreeking ·

come on guys wheres the dyno graph...??

chunks54 ·

I always wondered about the reverse taper on stingers....

Nice results guys.

What are the details on the titanium valvetrain? Where are they from?

dangerous ·

Titanium valves, for a Chev small block I think, less than 5" overall lengthand 11/32 stems.
I think they are Manley brand.
I think the retainers and collets are crower 10 degree.

coletrickle ·

Awesome shit guys.Re the reverse taper in exhausts that i see at work and i see lots they tend to be used to help overcome to big of an extractor system 2 help get the torque back you would be surprised to see the size of say a V8 supercar exhaust or some of the biante muscle car exhausts and some of the cosworth 4 cyl exhausts if they are 4 into 1 they are Small but very complex. If they are a tri y design the pipes tend to be a little bigger.

Boostn ·

Nice going awesome power guys!!!!!!!

🤪

I am very slack but have finally uploaded a vid of the dyno run before Warwick. Note Leon madly waving his arms to stop at the end ... lol

vassy66T1 ·

Here is the pic of the chart. The run that resulted in more HP was after I had left.

Long time since a update here , Well
Rod ran car Warwick last year with 2276 motor , then 1/8 mile event at Willowbank this year . Running 7.90s all day with a motor not on sweet side ( still looking)
but still winning 2 races and braking out on another . Was a fun night with 33 cars in our bracket.
The gear box has been noisy so box out for a freshen up ( down to Dangerous Dave's) and car will a few other changes to.
We are putting big motor back in (2387) with some suspension upgrades to , new torsion bars , new QA1 rear shocks , Rhino gear box case , new oil cooler with fan .
Rod is planing on running the next 1/8 mile series event at Warwick 14th May .

Post pics soon .

Been saving this Oerlikon 4.125 crownwheel and pinion for just such a special car.

dangerous ·

Using a "White Rhino" aluminium case, and billet side covers with through stud conversion.

Dak-A-Tak ·

Dave , how bad was the old crown wheel and pinion ? I bet it had road up a fair bit . Was gears all good ?
Not the Oerlikon , what is the story with this brand ?
Good one !!

dangerous ·

The Oerlikon is the machine that VW used to make special ring and pinions for Things and some type 3s, (when the Klingelnbergs were running low).
It is by far the strongests 4.125 available from VW.
In 20 years worth of transmissions this is only the third i have seen.

The old crown wheel and pinion was very burred up from coming out of mesh, but no huge cracks.
All that fine metal and black oil was from the surface of the teeth on the crown wheel and pinion.

All other geats looked great!

Pick it up tomorrow?
Must sleep now....

RAZ34 ·

Thanks Dave ,
Another quality job. Is this better than Westi's.

ha ha!
could be!
The new aluminium Rhinos are pretty good,
but the jury is still out as to whether they are better than the older magnesium ones.
I still have a couple if we decide lighter is better!

Bring on the 1/8th mile series!! Gonna to hurt some v8 pride with the big motor. I've been looking forward to seeing that motor back in it.

More lovely work Dangerous!

Stanley ·

yeh...good stuff DB

vassy66T1 ·

Reckon that might be strong enough 😵

FROSTY ·

Right on Tom, smash the V8's!!!!!!! I'm working on coming out to see the Warwick round.

STOCK ·

hey rod
box looks great but it needs a coat of pink paint i'll send ya some up
or check with pagey i'm sure he's got some lying around
😀😀😀

RAZ34 ·

Hey Stock ,
I thought when I ticked the Westi box on the rebuild form that it would come back pink .
What a disappointment when I saw it.
RR.

Stanley ·

forget pink it needs the polished alloy bull bar treatment

Dak-A-Tak ·

WoW ! opened up dragster mag , which had Willowbank 1/8 mile event coverage in , there it is , a huge pic of Rod taking off
from start line . Best part is they even used the blue colour (same as car) in there title words to the story .
Biggest volky pic I've ever seen in a Australian drag racing mag , check out his eyes !
Good one Ron Richardson !!!❓

matberry ·

Woo Hoo

Awsome RR

humpty ·

That's lovely..... Go Rod go!

vassy66T1 ·

Very, very cool 👍👍

Pete, do you have the photo that was in I think the Elapsed Times that showed Rod and Tom on the start line?

RAZ34 ·

Macca Smith sent me a text early on the day the mag came out saying I should get it.
Thought there might have been a small photo of the car but wasn't expecting anything like that.
The photo in The Elapsed Time is pretty cool as well.
Rod (a.k.a. ) Ron .

oldskl60 ·

check out his eyes !

Those are .00 eyes...
Front cover draging the stinger next month... Go Ron!!
