XXX-1.8T ·

whats the story behind them?

Australia didnt have Customs its just an American Badge

but this badge looks oem

BTW what were the difference to US custom vs deluxe?

The Australian 1300 Custom was the austerity Beetle of the time - no chrome trim, very low spec interior, no bright work in the window rubbers, etc, similar to the earlier Standard model.

It was only around for 1967, I believe.

Dave? What??? you should know,

Custom Beetles were an Australian only for '67, they are almost just a standard beetle, but with a glove box lid, and stainless steel blade bumpers with no over riders, and the custom badge on the engine lid under the 1300 badge.

cool i noticed that its got no trim in the windows or on the dash i assumed it got cal looked

are they rare?

Menangler ·

Not rare, but you don't see too many around anymore,
I had one a few years ago with 58,000 original miles on it, sold it too a girl in Sydney for $2000.00. I haven't seen it since. I have a couple of custom badges somewhere.

That explains a Beetle we had in our workshop a year ago which was a 67, had the "custom" badge, and the bumpers were stainless blades. It had a glovebox lid, no trim on the side windows, and the roof lining was in the middle top only. The bumper reconditioner said in all the years of doing repairs and rechroming of steel bumpers he had never seen stainless Beetle ones until those ones.

Well mines slightly different again-It comes up as a 66 model with 40hp 1200 motor,no badges anywhere,no window trim in the back or 2 side windows but the windscreen and the two doors have all the brightwork, yet the 1/4 widows are painted black as are the catches. It has no fuel guage, glovebox lid or dash chrome mouldings. There were no chrome trims on the running boards and the head lining was only in the centre section. It has all the holes in the body for towel rail bumpers, but the front one had been changed to an early type.It has the early low back front seats and has a black steering wheel and gearlever knob. From memory I think it only had one interior sun visor as well. All the side chrome strips are stainless steel and the original rear bumper was bright chrome as well. There were a few other things that I remember being different, but too long ago-I stripped it down about 4 years ago for a full resto but came across an Oval so shifted focus. Will do this one when Oval is done.

My original Baja was made from a 1300 Custom - no Chrome, sun visor on drivers side only and hoodlining only in the center of the roof - couldn't comment on the rest of it though as most of the 'custom only' features had been changed when it was converted to a Baja by the previous owner.

Anyone got a picture?

The standard Beetle had no glovebox lid..
painted bumper blades and 1/4 windows, hub caps etc..
No chrome strips.- painted line -.. no fuel gauge - No Badge --no dash chrome - top of front blinkers painted - etc..

it was replaced by the Custom model with the extras as detailed by Dave Becker & supercab

The Custom is now fairly rare - many owners added the extras like glovebox lids - chrome strips - over riders - chromed front blinkers .. chromed hub caps - etc...

IMHO - the standard beetle looked Terrible --
where as the custom Beetle looked like an earlier model beetle without the towel rail bumpers... [1960-61]
