just been looking round dads new notch, and i am wonderign what is standard and what is optional, as although it is not an S model and has no other special badging, there are many things on it that i wouldnt expect to be standard on a 72 volkswagen. firstly it has 2 chrome strips down each side, one at waist-line and one down the bottom. it has full carpeting right the way through, i think the speedo goes to 120mph (may have been more, will have to take another look), ashtray for the backseat passengers, rear window electric demister. are all/any of these standard, or are they acessories? what different models of nothcy came out? was there more then just standard and S?

i dont know heaps.. but my 71 square has the 120m/h speedo...and in my manual there is a electrical diagram that includes the rear window defogger.... mine also had the ashtray for the rear passengers... so i think ur just lucky and scored a t3 with some accessories...

All that stuff is standard on the late Type 3's, notches and fastys anyway. The squares were considered more of a commercial vehicle so they missed out on the pretty bits. They can with alot more stuff than Beetles.

I'm not sure what you mean by S model. The earlier models came out with a 1500S version, which was a higher compression engine. But all the 70 models were 1600.

The rear window demister was an optional accessory. Other accessories included a rear centre arm rest, alloy wheels, woodgrain gear knob and steering wheel. But alot of this was probably only available on import models, which are quite rare as nobody bothered to privately import a car which was locally available. I will check out my type 3 brochures tonight to see what else was available.

i have and have had a fair few 72's through my ownership and i have never seen a rear dimister. all the strips you mentioned were there, high and low on all models and the ash tray was optional. my early fastie has them as did my 70 notch. some came with a blinker on the side of the front guard, but ask someone who knows more bout that.

PurpleT3 how do you know all this. I have just bought a 65 and have the same problems. Need to do mechanical work on the car , would like a manual covering the car and some idea on specs.

From what i can gather my 65 has IRS , very early indicators fitted like empi's . I would like to check my car against what it should be.

Where can i get any manuals , info on my new baby?

You can buy workshop manuals from VW parts shops...
or they do pop up on ebay fairly often...

I believe there was only the one model type 3.....
Was pop out rear side windows an accessory for a notch...
they were optional for the Variant [wagon] & Fastback.

The first 1500S notches were imported from Germany.. Had nice cloth seats etc which fell to bits in the Aussie sun...
they had twin carbs and had High Compression engines.

Volkswagen Australasia in Clayton then started adding twin carbs to the standard 1500 engined notches and put the S badge on the back, which meant it was a twin S.. which meant it had twin carbs....

I've never seen a demister on any type 3 or type 1.....
even though they were standard on L Beetles in the USA...
because of the US laws...

I used to try to work out the front blinkers on type 3s to see if there was a pattern to them...
Some were the wrap around type...
I thought that the amber ones were imported and the clear ones from Australia....
Then there were the bullet type front blinkers... again some amber [Germany??] or clear [Australia]
I never did find out if I was correct or not...

Some 70> model type 3s had the red/clear small repeater lamp on the side near the chrome strip and door...
When the blinkers were used this lamp flashed on & off as normal...
with the ignition off.. and the blinker arm either up or down made this lamp go on continously...
it was a parking lamp for European cars - with Laws - that a car parked on the side of the road had to have a parking lamp on at night.... the front chrome strips had to be about 3 inches shorter for these lamp....
NOT every type 3 had these.... 1 out of 50 ?? only guessing..

The early ones had bullet indicators, later ones had the smaller wrap around chrome indicators and the latest models (70-73) had the big wrap arounds. I think the clear lenses are all aftermarket accessories, amber was standard.

The official servcie manual published by Robert Bentley (available on Amazon) is a must. Apart from that I have collected a few original sales brochures which list the accessories available. It gets confusing cos as Lee said there are euro, american and oz spec models. You could definitely get a rear window demister. I don't know if they were only available on imported 'luxury' models.

Dan if your '65 has IRS it must be a later modification a PO has done as they didn't come out with IRS (as well as front disks) until '69.

If you have specific questions on features for particular years, post your question on www.vwtype3.org. Somebody there will be able to tell you what year they came out with what changes.
