$480 for an adjustable beam

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/30575/480-for-an-adjustable-beam

cray ·

is that normal? :duh

pyr0 ·

for a bus or bug ? from who ?? is that including the beam trade with them ?

cray ·

for a balljoint bug, not including exchange. my beam is slightly bent. i'd rather not say from who. it probably is right, i was just a little shocked as people had led me to believe it would cost a fair chunk less 🙁

Snap

I left a beam in to have adjusters fitted, I was told it was bent and I ended up paying over $750 for a supply and fit of a King & linkpin beam with extended shock towers and avis adjusters fitted. It was show quality work (that I hadn't necessarily asked for), and its still sat in my garage unused as the original beam I had in my ghia just needed new torsions after all that.

I feel your pain bro!

I have since bought myself a welder for $500

Steve

cray ·

jesus h christ.

i haven't actually paid that amount. i was quoted it. no fitting. reco'd beam. rattlecan black paint.

Andy42 ·

You can get adjustable beams from workshops around here for just under 300 but that is with an exchange beam.

Desert Moose ·

if your talkin' just the beam.....it not that bad. Because its from $250 to $300 exchange depending on the ajusters

cray ·

this along with my new front brakes is gonna make the front end worth more than the rest of the car put together ;|

XXX-1.8T ·

how do u bend a beam, im stressing now:repuke

cray ·

XXX-1.8T wrote:how do u bend a beam, im stressing now:repuke
previous owner put the bug into the back of a land rover at 25kmh.

the bend is so slight that i couldn't even see it until the guy pointed it out to me. then he told me he couldn't take it because of the bend and that it would cost me $150 more unless i had another beam to exchange.

Give PickNPayless a call and ask how much for a beam, no brakes etc, I think you'll find that they will sell it to you for about $100, at least thats $50 less, and if you are real lucky, you may find that one of their beetle wrecks has an adjustable in it 🙂

my dad's place is right near there, so we've been already. the few beams that are in the cars that are sitting there are in worse condition than my own.

Chewy ·

You could get your own beam straightened out, buy some adjusters from the US for $15 each and do it yourself, or give it all to someone with some decent metal working skills and get them to do it up.

penguin ·

Bugger,
sorry dude. maybe someone here has one for sale for $100 (or less) then.

my dad could probably do it, he's pretty experienced with welding and other mechanical sort of things. and he's all for it.

the only problem is, the only instructions i've been able to find for the placement and fitting of the adjusters is for a king and link beam, which seems to be fairly different from where they need to go on a balljoint beam. can anyone help me out with this?

firstnameVlastnameW ·

I guess you have to way up the options here.
A, buy a set of adjuster of the same that the shop was offering remember there is two types the cheep and nasty tiwaness ones or the avis type which is the ones I brought a while ago from VVD cost me around 130 ea, very happy with the adjusters, top quality. Then you need to fit them remebering that you are modifing your suspension something that if not done wright could cost you a lot of money or even your lift if it fails.
B,If you are paying like I did 260.00 for a pair of adjuster then even 480.00 sounds good too me to have them supplied and fitted, I dont think I would have muched around for the day cleaning and fitting them when I could have picked up a beam aready done by a profesional. The peach of mind that the job was done in an RTA approved manner seems far for the $220.00.
As long as it is safe and low just do it.:P:P

cray ·

anybody? 🙂

vw54 ·

well have u considered the time is take to do one... and do u have an exchange beam

1 remove wheels, brakes, fuel tank, steering coloum etc etc

2 remove beam

3 strip beam n clean all grease n dirt n crap

4 cut beam and expertise required to do job.

5 supply n fit adjuster top

6 supply n fit adjuster bottom

7 supply n fit shock extension towers

8 re fit beam to car

8a fit camber shims

9 refit brakes wheels fuel tank

10 charge customer at hourly rate ???

11 ensure beam in car is straight and get wheel alignment

so yr beam is bent .... go to the wreckers if you can find a ball joint beam is it straight i would d say not so its supply n demand

U can send me a U2U who quoted u this price...

sounds fair to me supply beam with adjusters... there getting harder to find

cray ·

the price quoted to me, as i have already said in this thread is for the beam and adjusters only. NOT fitted. so 99% of what you've just said is completely irrelevant.

[Edited on 27-10-2004 by cray]

vw54 ·

Ok so did u find a straight beam at the wreckers ???

Can you strip clean n weld with the correct alignment the adjustors into position..... can you make a fit n weld the shock tower extensions ?? can you ensure its all alignened correctly and guarentee the welding and re assemble the beam correctly ???

If you can not do any of the above with confidence and correctness and guarentee it well then the price is good.

wacked1 ·

i have one for $200
ring me

here is a pic

twoguns ·

there ya go. i was about to say i got a KnL with adjsuters for 150. so they are out there.

vw54 ·

There u go GREAT PRICE looks straight
doesnt have extended shock towers but will still work...

Gee I luv this forum...

Brad ·

You can straighten a bent beam easy enough as long as in is not real bad.

I am currently writting tech articles on building adjustable front beams for the shop website at the moment. Should be done in the next few weeks as I have about 10 beams to build so should remember to take pics on at least one of them.

If you do build your own, just remember that the adjusters go in different places on the BJ to the K & L.

Fitting adjusters is a very easy job and all you need is a welder and a grinder ( oh and someone who can weld) Just remember if they let go your front end will drop onto your shocks.

One question though... why would you extend the shock towers on a BJ front end ?

Whats the difference??

Menangler ·

So standard length shocks don't bottom out all the time,
I usually raise the towers by only 30-40mm so with stock length shocks the ball joints don't bottom out, then things start getting nasty.

awesome pics mate, thanks, i'll give you a ring tomorrow arvo 🙂

pyr0 ·

hey slightly off topic but what year modle did the beam change from balljoint to the other one ?

cray ·

i think 68 was the first year for the balljoint bug

Any pics Dave? I would love to see how you do it!

N!

changed from K+L to BJ in 67 on aussie built bugs, if thats what you were asking.

pyr0 ·

yep that was it 😉

also do the KnL ones need the shock bit lengthend? (sorry abouut the idiots version of the question)

firstnameVlastnameW ·

I would not pay $10 for that beam, sorry to the person selling it but there is not an engineer around that would pass that in a road registed car for us in NSW. You can not cut the beam through like that and the welds look like that of less than a first year metal working apprentice on his first day, if that is the quality that a VW shop was offering for $480.00 then yes I would say you were definately been RIPPED off, before you all get up set I know that this is a private sale beam not from a VW shop.
They are the tiwanese adjusters not the good ones I brought for my beam. Again I am sorry for attacking the beam I see in the piture but man, the guy selling it you should take a good long look at it as it is NOT SAFE, the top beam has been welded twice, that has got to say something.
I know that there are a lot of other forum people out there thinking the same thing.

Menangler ·

This is a pick of the raised shock towers on a ball joint beam. This dosen't need to be done to a king and link beam.

Menangler ·

This is a pic of the beam showing the Berg style Avis adjusters, the only adjuster to use as the beam doesn't have to be cut.
These are around $130.00 ea.

This beam will be for sale at the shootout on Sunday if anyone is looking for one.

Andy42 ·

As to the legalities of cutting a beam and weldingit I am not sure but I can Guarentee you if I was to weld a beam in the centre for the adjusters it would not break on the welds. But I guess that is the benifit of being a boilermaker for 20 years. the welds on the beam of wacked 1 are a bit average.

twoguns ·

dont kid yourself about buying cheap adjsuters. i had a beam done by a shonky bastard known as ray on the central coast. he used the cheap ones, i didnt know this. the beam pretty much tore in half with in 2mnths. the bottom beam was comnpletely seperated and the top was together barely a few centermeters at the top. damn lucky i was jsut having a sticky beak on day cause my wheels were rubbing te guards.
the way i gave it to the beetle up and down kariong hill... i reckon i was in the wall that arvo for sure.

get good ones or dont do it at all...

[Edited on 28/10/2004 by twoguns]

Andy42 ·

The thing is was this the fault of the adjusters or the dodgey person who did it for you??????

twoguns ·

well a full weld all the way round is not safe. it weakens the beam. and the pressures i gave it, didnt add to it. and yeah the guy was jsut a dick. so putit all together and you had dissaster just around the next bend.
i ended up taking it to VVDS, who couldnt believe the state it was in and that i had been drving it, and they replaced it all down there. never had a problem after that. and i was known for lifting inside rear wheels down kariong. so they guys there did it good. but looking back, i think i paid too much there also. :duh but suppose you pay for waht you get.

pyr0 ·

well if wacked's beam was maybe just grinded up a lil bit i reckon it'd come up ok 🙂

how much is the beam pictured for sale 4 dave ?

Andy42 ·

Grinding a weld will not help if it is not a good quality weld. And they are not.

HotRodMatt ·

Not just the quality - isn't cutting the entire beam ILLEGAL?

Not to mention unsafe...

pyr0 ·

how do they narrow beams ? i always thought that was dont by cutting them in the center......i do know that it would deffinatly have to be engineer checked but

Chewy ·

So is it illegal to weld in adjusters?? If they were done by a tradesman would they pass??

pyr0 ·

no i think that comment was aimed at the welding done in the pick by wacked 🙁 (i hate it when things go like this)

well thats how i saw it.....:vader

wacked1 ·

guys don't worry i didn't weld and let me assure you if i welded it would look a lot worse than that . doesn’t bother me in the slightest, i had my other beam done at CBB good work but you also pay for what you get.
Cheers

wacked1 ·

and if this is illegal and unsafe i can't go on with the sale wouldn't want anything to happen to a fellow veedubber.
cheers
wacked1

cray ·

sorry wacked1.

had a bit of a family emergency today.

all of a sudden i don't have any money to spend on my car at the moment anyway. 🙁
