interest in koni shocks?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/30653/interest-in-koni-shocks

ruckus ·

Hi. I just bought a full set of Koni adjustables from a guy I met on a French car forum (for a 205 GTi) at around 30% off!

He's now ordering me some for the bug, but they're not in the country at the moment. Anyway the point of all of this is that when I asked him if he'd mind if I told people on this forum he said ok. So I'm just putting out feelers for how many people would be interested in getting konis for their dubs?

ps: just in case there are any cynics out there, no I don't make any money on this. I'm just such a nice guy :thumb

tassupervee ·

Are these gas shocks or hydraulic only?

ruckus ·

I think all as long as they're koni

ruckus ·

so, not much interest then?

XXX-1.8T ·

theres interest but post some prices

i have a couple of guys that are interested in some shortened shocks for their bugs 🙂

BiX ·

is that the aussiefrogs forum? what nic do you use on there?

Oasis ·

mmm I sold a 205GTI to buy my beetle. It was the best driving car I've ever had.

DoNkEy ·

it all depends on price..and trust. Have you met this guy?

ruckus ·

BiX wrote:is that the aussiefrogs forum? what nic do you use on there?
hmmm lets see if you can guess. I'm not very imaginative so there's every chance I use the same nic 🙂

matara ·

I'd be interested in some for my 356. Fronts are the same as an early bug.

Let me know

Steve

ruckus ·

Ok I'll get intouch with him and tell him that there's some demand on here. I can't post all the prices on here because I don't have access to them.

It's pretty simple: just a percentage discount of the retail price and they get delivered to your door!

I'm getting mine delivered to work tomorrow.

Have talked to him on the phone heaps. He doesn't seem to be in a rush to make heaps of money, he was just helping out on the frogs forum. Good, honest bloke with plenty of history on the aussiefrogs forum. This explains it:

"I am a registered stockist of the importer, have been for years, though I don't sell a lot. As such, I get a good discount. I make all contact with the importers and arrange for the freighting of your shocks direct to you."

Ill try to get him to come on here. He said he'd set up a site and an email address for the stuff.

I just saved around $300 on a full set of shocks, that was about 30% discount.

tassupervee ·

Guys
You all need to know that ALL Koni HYDRAULIC adjustable shocks are made in Australia (under licence) by Proven Products in Albury and have been for many many years.

They make them to fit just about anything.

Just give them a call and they will help you out.

I paid under 400 bucks for the pair of adjustable shocks for my F-Vee with a T1 link pin beam and these shocks were valved and oiled to suit.

This forum guy may be able to help us with koni gas shocks but dont bother with hydraulics unless they are spectacularly cheap.

Robo ·

So what are the OZ (proven) Koni's like on a Beetle? and you would be looking at around $700 to get four! is this right!
Rob...😎

tassupervee ·

That would be a mighty good deal to get 4 for 700 but you never know.
A lot depends on who you talk to as I have been quoted up to 700 a PAIR from one dealer.

It really pays to shop around for them but try them direct.

I have them on my Formula Vee so I cant help you with a beetle ride M8.

Robo ·

Yeah.
I have always had Koni's on my bikes, got good life out of them, and they were rebuildable, had one set 20 years!
Tried to get some for my Kombi a few years back, but the wern't available, that was from Proven when they were still at Guildford. Ended up settling for BOGE big oilers, have had a good run with those too!

ruckus and I have never met, no... nor have many of the Aussiefrogs members who've saved a bundle on their Konis through me met.

But we've managed to do the deal each time and I think if you look in the main Koni thread on www.aussiefrogs.com (www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/showthread.php?t=803) you'll find that each one in turn comes back and thanks me for my help.

I source the shocks from Proven Products, where I've had an association going back to 1971. They are not discounters, as anyone who has dealt with them will tell you, but they do have an arrangement by which people become their official 'stockists', which I did back when I was first working for them.

To do this one has to buy a stock with a certain number of units and value attached. It took me a while to muster up a few sales to make it happen, but I got it done and periodically I pass on a significant part of my subsequent discount to people who mention to me that they want to buy Konis.

By the means of these fora, I'm happy to pass on some discount to forum members. I don't actually discuss how much that discount is, but I will quote prices.

This is the way it works...

Say Robo wants a full set for his 1200 beetle... that's 80 1349 and 80 1350 (there is a Sport version listed for the rear, but it's not in the price list, so maybe it's been discontinued?), the list prices are $146 and $132 each respectively. Total list price is about $611 or thereabouts inc. GST.

So Robo phones me or texts me (preferable... when you text please let me know which mobile service you are on as I have deals which allow me to ring you back for nothing) on 0409 063 662 and we discuss exactly what he needs or wants. Or we can do this by e.mail ( discountkonis@ramojan.com ) .

Okay, it's just Konis for a 1200 beetle... I e.mail Proven Products and establish whether or not they are in stock (I believe they are at present) and advise Robo of the price.... he decides to go ahead and places $430 in my Bankcard account at the Commonwealth Bank. I will have e.mailed him the account number by this time. He texts me that the money is in the bank.

I will confirm with the CBA's phone banking service the following day that the money has been deposited. It will be necessary sometimes for me to charge people different amounts. If there are two deals for the same thing going on, I will make one $431 and the other $429 so I can distinguish who has banked the money...

As soon as I find the money is in the account, I advise PP to take their payment from that account and to ship the Konis to the address Robo has stipulated.

A couple of things to bear in mind:

Sometimes I am away from the computer for some days at a time... I travel a bit with some of the work I do and it might be four or five days before I get to a computer. If that's the case and I get a phone order, I do the whole deal by phone.

Proven Products keep the bulk of their stock in Sydney, and because they've had problems with the warehouse sending the wrong units, they get everything that's ordered transhipped to Albury prior to despatching it to the end user. So it may take two to five working days for the Konis to arrive.

The transport company delivering them need to get a signature, so the delivery address will have to be somewhere that there's someone present when the delivery is made.

I hope that answers the questions for you.

Ramojan ·

matara... your 356 is a special case...

While you can fit the VW dampers if you like, the right units are available through Koni's 'classic' service.

This is not as easy as it sounds, however. I can't quote you a price, or not immediately, and if you decide to order them you will have to pay up front and wait however long it takes for them to come from Holland.

This is a point to consider for all Koni purchases. Koni schedule production months ahead, and if they don't have stock and PP don't have stock of what you want, then they simply say "they're scheduled for August production" and that's the end of the discussion. You just have to wait.

By the way, on all purchases, I cover the freight out of my little slice. If it's a smaller purchase, I might have to reduce the discount a little to cover expenses.

Robo wrote:So what are the OZ (proven) Koni's like on a Beetle? and you would be looking at around $700 to get four! is this right!
Robo, I've used you as an example assuming you have a regular 1200 beetle... but I guess you might have a Superbug... this makes a big difference as strut inserts are much more pricey.

List price for the front struts is $228 each, so with the rears at $137 each you have a total retail price of about $803. My price for these would then be $565 for the set including delivery.

Out of interest, when Superbugs were new they had a huge warranty problem with leaking front struts.

PP did a deal with VWA and imported a stack of Koni seals, they had the original VW strut seal housings machined to suit and fitted Koni seals and VWA supplied these PP 'reconditioned' struts to Superbug owners claiming warranty on their struts.

Thanks for your e.mail, Steve... is there anyone else wanting a quote on delivery time and price while I'm checking these out for Steve?

ruckus ·

Hey Ray. Just wanted to let everyone know (mostly you) that my skocks arrived and I'm like a little kid who's had a good christmas. 😀

Let me know when we can start thinking about the setup for the bug.

Can't recommend you highly enough!

DoNkEy ·

How much for a bay kombi set?

Y2K ·

And for a 2004 New Beetle Turbo, how much?

Ramojan ·

Unless the 2004 new Beetle is different to the 2003, the Koni Sport units are the only ones listed for standard fitment... these retail for around $1225 for the full set. I can therefore have them delivered to you for $860 for the set.

There is the option of a lowering kit that drops the car 45mm in the front and 35mm in the rear, this giving you adjustable ride height all round for about $2800 retail and front ride height adjustability for about $2375 retail. These aren't available for 4-motion or RSi models. A warning in the recommendation book states that cars with drive shaft diameter over 42mm can't be lowered more than 30mm without risking drive shaft damage.

DoNkEy... please pardon my ignorance... what is a 'bay' Kombi?

By the way, with early Kombis it's necessary to know chassis numbers...

ruckus ·

Ray any chance on a quote for fitting out the '71 standard beetle?

Andy ·

A "Bay" kombi is a VW type 2 (bus/van etc), '68-'79.
I'm not sure if the shocks were the same for the whole period though as the front ends do vary ~'70 and ~'72 roughly.

As for Koni shocks for Bay kombi's, this recently came up on a US forum, passing on info from there (only what I heard) is they are NLA. A group pestered the factory enough to have a custom batch "made to order" I think the order has already been placed, no idea how long till they're made. The "group buy" was ~$500US (front/rear), plus shipping to oz etc, etc.

They were adjustable rate heavy duty oil shocks made specifically for the bus by koni in the '70's and apparently are very good. (never had them myself, but would love some).

I don't know if "PP" can add to that order or not, but thought the info would be useful.
Cheers,
Richard

PS: I can get more info on these shocks if you need Ramojan.

Have just talked to Ray through another forum. He's having big problems with accessing his password for this forum so he can't reply at the moment. The best bet is to email him:

discountkonis@ramojan.com

or u2u me and I'll pass on your phone number through a text message. He's out on business til Friday but I'll be able to get him on the phone if anyone's desperate.

He said the mods have emailed him back but don't seem to understand the problem?

Yes, it seems that front Konis for the 8/67 to 7/69 Kombis are no longer available...

But rear ones are, they fit the same from 8/67 to 1979. Well, they're available according to the Koni catalogue, but they're not in the price list so I'll make some enquiries...

Kombi fronts from chassis no 22.000.097 8/69 to 1979 are marked as 'to be discontinued when stocks depleted.'

As regards getting a special batch made, this has been floated with regard to some Peugeots. As far as I can ascertain (ie before anyone puts their money where their mouth is) they will build a batch of 100 units on that basis. I suspect the price would be higher than normal, but probably not very much higher.

On the other hand, PP have been in this business a long time. They might well have established that there's another Koni that can be made to fit without too much bother.

I will check this out.

Good to be able to get back on here after the computer dramas I've had. Thanks for the help, ruckus...

And if anyone does want to text me, feel free. 0409 063 662.

As ruckus passed on, I'm going to be on the road, though plans have changed a little. But for much of the next fortnight I will only be on the net sparingly.

This is if they are the same as the 2003 models excepting the RSi:

$557.50 for the fronts, which are externally adjustable.
$302.00 for the rears.

Delivered to you.

There is a height adjustable suspension kit with spring height adjustment as well as externally adjustable damping for the front, only spring height adjustment and normal adjustability at the rear.

Prices you can't jump over... I would suspect that PP wouldn't carry these normally and would ask a huge deposit before ordering.

Che Castro ·

i have heard all the koni stuff is made here, although my boxes say "made in holland". Dont know if they just mean the boxes ? 🙂

Ramojan ·

No Konis are made in Australia. None at all...

But Ikon motorcycle dampers are Koni designs made under licence in Albury. Well, assembled in Albury. Parts are made all over the place and put together in beautiful downtown North Albury.

Konis come from Holland originally, but they also have factories in other European countries, from what I gather.

ruckus ·

So much for being on the road Ray 😉

Ramojan ·

The printers advised that they would bring the deadline for the magazine forward by a week... it was too late for me to hit the road and still do the job I needed to do, so I had to do it all by phone from home.

Now I just have to be on deck at Bowral Saturday morning...

And another satisfied Froggy customer gets his strut inserts tomorrow.

Andy ·

Yep, that's right on Ikon's, I have a set :thumb
I believe their only for models no longer made by Koni, and only motorcycles as far as I know.

SteveMk2 ·

I have Koni yellows in the GTI and Koni Reds in the wento, and if I were you, unless you have stock springs, I would go the extra and get yellows.

Oh, and my reds (hydro's) were made in Germany...

Ramojan ·

There was quite a number of people who e.mailed me about Konis and Spax... but nothing came of any of it.

As everyone knows, I can organise super prices on these products, delivered to your door.

Please don't be afraid to e.mail me... konidiscounter@ramojan.com
