Have a couple of tiny areas which need tending to - with regards to paint.
For example, previous owner removed the gear pattern sticker from the ashtray - and scratched the **** out of it - also paint is worn on inside pillar where the seat belt metal hits it (and some other misc. areas like that).
How do you fix these bits - professionally - or DIY touch-up (if diy - how??)
All advice appreciated....

to really look any good.. professionally..
a scratch on a penel, needs the whole panel to be painted. ashtray east, because so small.. and you definatley want it done by a pro.. so they can match th paint around the ashtray (nop doubt it has faded and changed over time.. a good colour matcher can make your ashtray look original and new.. the pillar, again - a pro.. BUT (im assuming this is the new car you got that is in all original paint?) then leave it in all the original paint馃檪 it's all part of the character, and original paint after 30 odd years is pretty good!
how do you know it IS original paint by the way?

OK
I'm getting this plane ticket organised and bringing my spray guns with me...lol

Cool drag bug.....
How do we know it's original paint .....firstly, old man Jack (previous owner of 30 yrs) told us it was (still suss?), secondly, then our mechanic who checked it over pre-purchase confirmed it (he questioned it at first coz its in such good condition, but then he said it was). So we are going by that, who knows, it might not be??
Apparently it's had one scrape in a car park - so I think one panel may be repainted (if they repaint the whole panel as killa said)....
So you reckon you should leave it if it's original

you can check in areas which some people can't be bothered to paint over (inside spare tire well etc) and then you can tell if its a slightly different shade and then perhaps not original paint in other places... my bug is original on inside but badly repainted on outside 馃檨 it really depends on the condition of the paint as to whether i'd repaint it..personally I like the original chipped in places paint inside my bug...gives it a bit of character...but say if rust was forming then i'd definately fix it up...

yeh - I know what ya mean - to be honest, the chips/worn paint don't really bother me - it's more the scratched ashtray as it just looks scratched & ugly - not worn or old (threw i the others for good measure).
So what would you do just to fix the ashtray?? (Would like to get a new gear pattern sticker for it at some point)
Canni. 路
perhaps get the ashtray professionally painted...as someone said earlier they will be able to match colours so it doesn't look too odd....I can't help you on the sticker since my bug doesn't have it...but I'm sure someone could print one for you...

they are in classicVWpacific catalogue so can probably get the stickers through them?? Thanks again....

I think You are going everboard with the professional paint job on an ashtray....
I don't like chips scratches etc... but so long as its painted...
just look for for some paint around the same colour....
or auto one can color match and put the paint into a pressure pack can... that may be the way to go....
Even if the ashtray was painted black etc....
would be better than scratched...
IMHO...

i'v gotten pretty fussy w/ paint jobs!! working on "prestiege" only the best for a dub i reckon!!!
you'll find original paint from 30 or so years ago will start to go chalky under the hood - as no -one ever waxes it there.. and you can try finding a patch on th outside, and giving it a light rub with 2000 sandpaper, if the residue is coloured it is probably original.. if it's clear, then you'll knoe it has been done with a base coat, then 2-K clear over it馃檪
gazza 路
i will try the sandpaper test - where do you get 2000 sandpaper - just from bunnings or some standard place like that??
I will check out the inside hood too - although I wouldn't be surprised if he waxed in there at some point - he did confess to be a wax nazi!!
68 auto - notice yr pic of the gear pattern - do you supply them or know where I can get them??

Get a colour matched spray can made up, (Complete Auto Paints), light sand the area to paint, mask off where ever you don't want paint, and voila! Best if you bleed it in if possible. Buy a new sticker and Bob's your uncle. Anyone can do it and you'll be so impressed with yourself, you'll be painting anything you can find.

Thanks Dude - When you say "complete auto paints" is that a company? Where are they/how do I get in touch with them??
And what do you mean by "bleed it in"??
65busser 路
Cnr Blackburn Road and Princes Hwy. I think that's the correct name. (Complete Auto Paints). You take along a bit of the car that's the colour you want, and later that day $30 worth of matching spray can. Bleed it in - I think that's the terminology, but what I mean is, if you wanted to paint a section of your dash and you masked off a square section to paint, you'd be left with a line when you remove the masking tape. So, by bleeding it or blending it, you would allow an area for overspray to blend onto the existing paint. I'll u2u.
killakornkobb 路
also known as pissing in or blowing in..
flick colour over affected area, and les over spray blend into the paint already there.. allow to dry, and then give a light hand cut if it looks a bit rough
