Would like to get hold of one or two good vw manuals so that I can learn to tackle my beetle myself where possible.
(have a 1970 1300 beetle)
What would you recommend as the first one or two good "must have's". I've seen many different ones for sale on ebay etc, but want to know which ones I should start with......
Thanks guys

Yep, its a cracking book, I just got mine.
I ordered from amazon.com in the states.
Believe it or not it worked out $10 cheaper than going into the shops here and buying it! Even with the postage from the USA!!
Barmy! :duh

You can also get the late John Muirs book for the compleat idiot on ebay from time to time..... [in Australia]
Just remember John Muir wasn't a mechanic... He wrote idiot books on all different subjects....
I have 10 different VW manuals...
Some of the Haynes manuals are great.... amazon or ebay...
a great little glovebox book is - Haynes Beetle owners handbook & servicing guide...- this should be in every ones glovebox...
Another good book is AutoBooks VW Beetle 1954-78 Owners Maintenance & repair manual..
These two books are for the owner.. they don't tell You how to strip an engine or gearbox down... If You are like Me, You don't want to know about that anyway...
Some of the Chiltons manuals are good on certain subjects- like fixing carburetor problems- spark etc...
You can buy these books 2nd hand - on Amazon VERY Cheaply.... another good little book "How to fix Your Volkswagen" by Larry Johnson.. I hope that title is correct, from memory.. I bought a few of these books very cheap off amazon 2nd hand like $3 $4 each... When You purchase used books on Amazon they are from other people NOT amazon... I have just ordered two more VW Books from Amazon - was cheaper to buy New from Amazon than buy locally off ebay for a used book...
Incidently, I have read the late John Muirs book for the compleat idiot and I don't like it... for the beginner its a good book.. He doesn't like automatic chokes for one thing I can remember... glue those pages together... there are other silly things that I can't remember in the book, but if Your Beetle stops... it can get You going.. and thats the main thing...

Thanks for all the info Lee - I'll check out ebay/amazon etc.
I like the sound of the Haynes one (that you recommend to keep in the glovebox) too
