fire extinguisher mount?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/30869/fire-extinguisher-mount

oval TOFU ·

So where to you all stick it?

phantom ·

In my bug, I mounted it under the 'dash' (haha), central, kinda behind the ashtray area. As the firewall didn't look that thick I made a bracket to go in the boot to match the holes, so that there was more to hold on to. Worked OK, not intrusive of the cabin and ready to go when I need it.

I wanted to mount it to the tunnel, however didn't want to mess with the 'stuff' currently in there (wires and fuel lines and stuff) so thought the firewall would be better.

BiX ·

mines just in front of the passenger seat. bolted 2 tabs to the seat base thats in the floor pan and monted it on here. It does mean you can't get the seat full foward, bu thats not really an issue.

theverybigtallman ·

most of the time they mounted in either the passenger footwell or people take out the back seat and put it where the seat used to be. the back seat could become an access issue if the car caught fire...

vwrallycar ·

mine is under the dash in the centre and the other in front of the passenger seat

penguin ·

Mine will be going down either just next to the tunnel or up under the dash.
At the moment I can see clearly into the tunnel and can avoid all the associated bits and pipes in there.

Canni. ·

also interested in this... i can't decide where to mount it so at the moment its in its box in the boot 😀 at least its easily accessible...

barls ·

mines going on the tunnel when i get it finished

manxed69 ·

I fitted mine directly to the tunnel in front of the shifter. I welded the bracket straight to the tunnel after enlarging the mounting holes. This allowed me to weld straight thruogh these holes to the tunnel below. I believe that all of the stuff in the tunnel is low down so that the welding would be OK.

Under the 'dash' :P isn't a bad idea, but I'm planning on having a parcel shelf the in the future, so I think I'll be goin the tunner mount... depends if I can still rest my left foot there on long drives though... 🙂

68AutoBug ·

ON the Tunnel in front of the gear lever is the best place...
Accessable from both sides...
If You are in an accident and the front bonnet is jammed shut and the engine catches fire......
also when the engine and interior catches fire... no good having it behind the rear seat... it gets burnt too...

In early beetles.. if a hose or pipe pops off and the engine catches fire... turn Your fuel off at the lever on the floor...
45 degrees is OFF and the fire will go out...... engine fires only stay alight while ever they are fed fuel.......

I've got a 54 and I dont have a reserve fuel tap... =(

oval TOFU ·

anyone got pics? The time has come for my self-imposed safety reg..

Grey 57 ·

On the tunnel in front of the gear stick is the best place. Easy to get too.

penguin ·

If I can I will try to take a few pics up my tunnel to show where things are... or you could always go to the cutaway pics on the VW drivers Club of QLD site and see what to avoid when drilling/welding. After that I think that its just bolts or weld 🙂

oval TOFU ·

oooooooooooooooooo i've seen the inside of my tunnel moe than I can joyfully recall.. I replaced my fuel line... seems like the tunnel in front of the shifter sounds popular - just wondering exactly where ppl mount it when it's on the passenger-side near the door - and how to mount it? -need a backing plate for the bolts?

jenz58 ·

Bel's is on the wall just inside the passengers door....easy to reach across too

Yogie ·

I have been wondering the same thing myself. We have a centre console so we can't fit it in the tunnel. I didn't want to drill in to the luggage area to mount it under the dash. At the moment it sits on the floor behind the drivers seat so it is at least accessible. Does anyone have a picture of how they mounted them to the seat base?

Yogie

BiX ·

Umm no picture, but i will try and get one tonite. you need one thats is shorter so that if fits between the seat rails when the seat is moved foward.

On the super bug there is a brace in the floor pan between the 2 rails, it comes up and then back about an inch. Bolt 2 tabs onto this and bend them downwards, adn them nount the bracket onto this. Its out of the way, can still move the seat foward and back, and can be easily accessed.

I am currently putting 2 new ones in the car at the moment so will take a few pics this weekend as i do it.

65busser ·

How good's this?http://www.vwdcqinc.org.au/inside63tunnel.html

This is what Penguin was talking about.

So from this I reckon it's ok to whack a couple of self tappers into the top of the tunnel forward of the grearshift and mount the bracket there?

oval TOFU ·

Hey Jen - I was hoping you'd post a pic of Bel's extinguisher! Looks good there - it doesn't get in the way of the passenger's legs?

Looks/sounds like it's easy mounting on the tunnel..

bajachris88 ·

65busser, mad site u gave us, thanks mate, i learnt alot. Hmm, quite interesting actually.

EgeWorks ·

Mine is on the front of back seat on the passenger side, next to where the heater outlet is. Easy to reach from the driver's seat. No-one ever sits back there anyway and space is hard to come by in the front of a beetle.

penguin ·

Yeap
thats the site. As bad as those disco blue jackets may be, they are great for providing VW info to the masses. (Just kidding abt the jackets okay peoples)
I forgot that the fuel line was on the bottom, so mounting it to the top should be easy.

What you will need to look at though is which way around to mount it, ie: head forwards or rearwards. You will want to avoid kicking it all the time with your foot if you go for the clutch. Also if I can mount it a bit over to one side in my mind I would prefer to annoy my passenger than myself.

that's OK, I don't wear one.

penguin ·

Cool,
its just something I like to stir lil dub about whenever I see:kiss one

BiX ·

i was biting my tongue.......

thye are a dying breed luckily 😀

oval TOFU ·

Would self tappers suffice if I elected to mount the FE on the passenger side footwell wall? How ws your's done Jen?

BiX ·

i would bolt it in. its going to be 1kg of loose mass in an accident if the mount failed, also try and get one with metal bracket and straps, there is a new one out with twin metal straps.

Dasdubber ·

Mine was mounted in front of the shifter as mentioned earlier a few times - this is my old bug....will figure out where to put the new one shortly.

penguin ·

I agree that the top would be the better area. 1kg (at least) of mass that will vibrate and move when the car moves....... better to have it on top and slightly more stable than if it were on the side. That way also it is easier to grab from the drivers seat, don't forget if you do it on the side the release latch may have to open from alomost floor level upwards.

I do like the way Dasdubber had his old one, I may try to get something done/started while my pan is in its current stripped state.

Fossil ·

VWDCQ Inc site has got some good stuff there btu it's not advertised - ya gotta know about it and oldbubber knows his VW's - onya & away🙅

sneak_e ·

Mine's still in the box on the shelf at Supa-Cheap - dammit 🙁

Find someone parting out a race car and see if you can buy their engine-bay dumper systems. Hit a button and let the whole system do the work for you 🙂
