Whale Tails?

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/31045/whale-tails

vw_rag 路

Hi all. Very new to this forum and also very new to the VW scene. Am just about to pick up my new beetle a 1964 model. Seems a good thing with porsche wheels, a 1920cc motor, and some real nice racing seats to match the red paint work. Whales tails? Are they are a good thing or a bad? whats other peoples opinions? It has been suggested that the back looks a little bare with out a lip of some sort.... yet to be decided.

Let me know what you all think of the idea! 馃槈

nah cant say i like em.......

then again if your palnning on useinf it to hel with down force thats a different story...

vwrallycar 路

i have a whale tail on mine and i have it there solely to get more air flow into the engine bay. I have cut many holes into it though.
And yes it does work, tried and tested.
will reduce oil temp

BiX 路

in the right setup they look ok, eg a full carrea kitted car. an id you need them for cooling why not.

oval TOFU 路

What ^ they said.. only for function... not form, should you use it for, grasshopper...

killakornkobb 路

i dont like em... and find a stand-off kit does the trick for cooling

(but i like the look of the stand off kit:jesus)

Anthiron 路

on a beetle without a full kit i dont like them and i only like a few bugs that have the full kit. i would go for hood jacks if you want more cooling and they look cool but dont like the whale tail look.

LOWBUG 路

Mmmmmmm

bagage carier or tupperware, the orginal line is the better. I've have big engines and just stood the deck lid off not for cooling but for air to feed carbs.

Canni. 路

have to say...don't like the whale tail look...

ColumBUS 路

they look good on superbugs with the full kit
thats my plans... very german look racer type
with ur engine and by the sounds of the rest of the car sounds like you want to do the same thing

ive always liked em, but on their own and on earlier models bugs they aint the shizznat (dont ask i dont know what shizznat means either)

Bizarre 路

They CAN look good.

Have a look at Alex Holzl, Jak Rizzo car, or Jurgo's

Go to V Force web site at www.beetleracing.com

Beside that - IF you have the mumbo they are beneficial

Starbug 路

i love them. I took mine off my bug, but sometimes i get the urge to put it back on 馃榾
they look great on fully kitted cars, they give you some downforce and they make your beetle look very phat. (yes, phat) especially if youve got flared guards and wide wheels.
the downside to them is that every little pinprick riceboxer wants to race you at the lights so they can show that their tail is bigger than yours...

Anthiron 路

jak rizzo's car doesnt just have a standard one though if its a german looker and you want the race look the a big double layer wing like his looks great i was refering to the pissy little standard whale tail.

VWFREAK 路

Don't do it, can't stand the things.

Fiberglass belongs on Toranas!

71superbug 路

all the ones i have seen have been S#*T

If your new bug has those plates on it [VW RAG], then no....a whale tail will not look good. That car was at the '88 Nationals - believe it or not I've got a pic of it somewhere. It was advertised recently I know that much. Sweet looking car in those days and I'm sure it still is. Whale tails belong on late model bugs....early bugs like yours just don't quite match the look [my opinion anyway].

Anyone else on here remember this bug? Have you got pics?

Squiz.....

PHAT BUG 路

Dont do it Ryan, those things look shit!!

Bubble146 路

nah, personally i dont like em'.....

dragbug 路

Good for sitn your beer on......that's about it!

Dannyboy 路

Okay on a drag car or very well done German looker but shithouse on most anything else apart from a 911 !
