this is my Powder blue 62 Custom beetle a day before i go and pick it up. For something that old, thats original paint, i think it is standing up pretty well. One owner for the past 16 years. Trim has just been re-done alsong with new carpet. Has had a 12volt conversion done and a 1600 single port.. Soon to come is some empi 5's and some pin striping. Also keen for a front sun visor, slightly lower it (which will be left in the capable hands of 'PHAT BUG' - thanks Rhett 馃槈 and we will see what happens from there. Am going to go for a classic/sports/retro look so should give me something to do for a while. More photos as time progresses. I'll post some of the engine bay etc when i pick up the car.
Cheers

Howdy all,
Updates. I have serviced the ol girl with new plugs, leads, points, air filter, oil, adjusted the timing. Have changed the exhuast tips to give a louder and deeper note, fitted a front sun visor, and some nice new wheel dress trims. Its getting there slowly. Whatya all think?
BLUE_62 路
Rear end shot. Love the exhuast tips in the relaxed position. Juts a bit different than the normal horizontal mounted ones.

get your money out for some drop spindles ,turn a couple of teeth on the rear splines then drive over speed humps sideways.

Finally got around to cleaning up the grease pit of a motor. A nice ramflow air filter on a custom mounting plate, and the little ricer oil breather filter is a nice touch i thought... Still plenty to clean and customize up. Gimme time. More photos to come. 馃槑

Thanks. Always plenty to do. Put a front bar on it today that is not missing its chrome so that looks 100%, fitted new heat riser tubes in the motor bay (gloss black ones), new dizzy cap, and polished the coil back to a chrome appearence. Adjusted the headlights tonight too so theyt actually work properlly. Not bad for normal globes and lenses. Tomorrows efforts will be hiding some of the wiring. Have another car on its way for parts. Mine should be sporting an adjustable front beam soon, and the rear will be dropped one spline. I have some 15 x 6.5's comin for the rear wearing 205's and the front will be sporting 145's. They should be ready soon. Getting taken to the powder coating man to be done in white. Also some nice new centre caps should be just around the corner. The list is endless, and unfortunatly the bloody bank account aint. :duh All in good time hey. I'll get an update photo of the engine bay when the wiring is all hidden. Should look a little better again. Dunno about show condition. Paint is f**ked beyond repair but will certainly try and make it shiney..... I think u can make shit shine....? :duh 馃槑

OK, i got bored this morning and as paint was getting pretty tierd i thought i have not got much to lose. Whatya all think?
The paint has bleeded through a little but i think it just makes it look a little more original and faded. We'll call it artistic flare :thumb 馃槑

The ol girtl got her second dose of paint today and a light polish by hand. Its come up quite well if i do say so myself.
A shot of the motor now all wiring is hidden, the coil has been polished, new heat riser tubes. We are getting there. Bit more to do bewteen now and the day of the VW. My wider back wheels should be on early next week. Will post some photos of that when i can. For now, a shot of the final product and and engine shot.

BLUE_62 路
Hey,
been a while since an update so i thought what the hey. The QUI-859 plates are gone and i have slimlines front and rear TED-882. Dont worry, no empi stripe coming. Having a few dramas mechanically but all is running as sweet and smooth as a sewing machine now. The adjustable front beam is in the shed still looking at me but that shouldnt be far away now. I got all excited and replaced the front seats with some out of a 88' Laser TX3 so its heaps more comfortable to drive, now with height adjust, lumber support, base tilt option and reclinability.... I am 6ft 3" and with the seat all the way back i can only just clutch in all the way.... Its lovely. Photos wont be far off. Anyway, till then. Take care everyone.
Che Castro 路
nice one! looks a lot like mine.
Costa's right about the decklid, the bonnet is also a 63 and later item as it is missing the crest and has a platform for the emblem.
Also the front indicators are 64 and later items.
Che Castro 路
Doesn't really matter what year though, its close enough. Check the wheels for a date as well. if you take the hubcap off there is usually a date stamped on the wheel.
You shuold be able to identify it by the VIN anyway
nbturbo 路
Being a Custom, the fuel guage is a ring in any way-with a bit of luck it will still have the original speedo-check the date code on that. From what I can see from the pics, you have definately got a lot later model than a 62-Bonus !!!!!!!
BLUE_62 路
All in all, regardless of what it is i still love it.
I know i promised more photos, i just havn't had the camera in my hand at the right time lately. Another update. i pissed the cd player off that it had, and replaced it with a Sony cassette headunit and a 6 disc sony stacker unit. It all works awesome and the install dont look half bad. I am now running my 12" Sub and pioneer amp in behind the back seat. It aint a sound car or a Db drag car either but is nice to listen too and can go loud enough to drown out the rattles. :thumb
I still have to replace the front speakers, Currently 4" Akai's, will replace with some 6" splits fingers crossed. Anyway enough from me for now. Photos real soon. i promise. 馃槑

Laser TX3 seats.
Chewy 路
How much did you pay for the laser seats?? And how did you mount them?
On stock rails?
They look like just the ticket for my bug..
EgeWorks 路
I remember seeing this one at DOVW, was just near mine馃檪 Nice ride! I remember it by the plywood door cards, very unique. Are you going to get new ones or cover them in something?
BLUE_62 路
I scored the seats for $175 the pair. The original seats have been taken out and the bottom rail remains. There are two holes in the front of the rails on the floor. I have some angle steel and matched the two holes and bolted the angle to the floor like so (No new holes have been drilled), then i have modified the front seat brackets to sit on the flat part of the angle and have bolted them as such. The back inner seat mount lines up with the tunnel and is bolted accordingly, however the outter seat foot, i have no access to but sits firm agains the door sill area and is out of sight. They aint going anywhere, and if i chose to remove the seats i can slide the originals back in and no one would be any the wiser. (Hope all that made sence)
The door cards i hate, i have intentions of covering them with a vinyl but i need to design a speaker pod for the lower half and i will be running with a theme on the door which is also in the making. All in good time :thumb (Thats what i keep telling myself anyway) 馃槑
BLUE_62 路
Hey All,
here it is, finally lowered. Only one spline on the back and just high enough on the front so the 165's dont scrub "MUCH". lol
BLUE_62 路
and one more.

Coming to the conclusion that the beetle is actually a 66 model which is crap because i wanted a god damn late 50's, early 60's. Oh well. Will find out for sure. I'll get the body ID and see if someone can tell me what it all means.
BenettonVW 路
Does the number start with 196?
BLUE_62 路
The speedo, the front rims and the spare all match 66 and the back stockies in the shed are also 11/66.
The Vin number is 196822013
Can anybody tell me what this all means.
All i know now is the 6 means 1966 model.
cheers to anyone with more info. 馃槑

Got a lead on a 1966 beetle. 52,000 genuine miles. 2 owner car. original, untouched. Been sitting in a shed for years.... could be a goer. still rebuilding old ted-882 thou. thats gunna be the project.
BenettonVW 路
Man mine was a 66, and it was cool as.. Mate, things like small indicators and bonnet Wolfsburg Crests are highly over rated... :P
I Used to know what the chassis number all was.. You are right though, firstly the 19 means it was made in Australia, and the 6 is that it was made in 1966. The other numbers was factory options, colours, motor, etc.. but I dunno what it all is now.. getting too old.. :cussing
BLUE_62 路
Found a 1967 beetle as a donor for the floor pan (chassis). Picked it up for 50 bucks. Its a clean floor. body has been stripped. Has had an engine fire but no damage to the gearbox etc so i am laughin. No rust too. Even better. Still tend on cleaning it up, rust proffing it and painting it in a sound deadner. :thumb (on the inside anyway)
BLUE_62 路
The strip down begins. All the stereo is out now and the original seats are back in with the laser tx3 ones put in storage so to speak. The ol girl is getting transported to my nans workshop about 70km's away until our own new shed is built. should bring my baby home within the next 4-6 weeks. She dont go till next weekend so a little time to spend with her yet.
BLUE_62 路
Officially its a 1967 Model with the new floor pan so shes no longer 1962 - RIP, even though its actually a 1966 model with a f**ked up rego paper!
Anyway, new chassis, new start!
Welcome to the 1967 Standard.
ColumBUS 路
youll have to change ur avd name now mate!
much the same as i have to due to changing car names, nicknames, witness protection, etc. etc...
Freddie Fender 路
Glad to see that you're doing the old girl up. It is a big job and I had to have the pillars rebuilt in mine before the paint job. It is well worth doing these 60's Beetle up, they also look really cool. The Ovals are overated, a bigger back window doesn't really change anything.
BLUE_62 路
shell wise mine is very good, the only rust being in the front passenger guard just under the chrome strip and also in the front passenger wheel arch just down near the floor. appart from that i dont think there is much else. I hope not anyway. Just trying to work out what on it is worth keeping and whats worth replacing. love to replace it all but cost will be too high. Most of the chrome is in good order, except bumpers which have a few marks so they will be getting replaced, um, and the bonnet dress trims going too. Its got a few marks not wanted. Question is, how do i go about filling in the hole in the dash that was cut by the previous owner for a stereo to go in?
do i chop and weld another dash in, or just weld a plate in the hole and paint it all??? any advice greatfully appreciated.
Freddie Fender 路
Do you need to weld the hole or are you going to use a stereo? IF you're going to use a stereo just leave it.
Welding a new dash is a bigger job than just welding a plate over this area. No real advice here other than if it isn't too bad, just leave it as it is.
Che Castro 路
you can weld in plate to fix it. grafting in a dash would be very difficult and time consuming.
Be careful about the hole in the wheel arch, as this can mean the whole pillar is rusted and/or the heater channel.
BLUE_62 路
Oh goody, just what i wanted to hear!
Heres a photo of the rust under the wheel arch. fingers crossed it wont be much......
the chrome strip is just bubble rust under the paint as it appears to have gotten in where the hole is to mount the side strip.
BLUE_62 路
Its been a while so i felt it was time to update....
MMMMmmmm. whats changed. Well it is now sporting lots of cobb webs and is sitting there doing nothing. I drove it up and down the street 2 weeks ago and its still running like a dream so i guess while i am sorting out other things it can sit there for another few mths. Moving house soon so soon to be garaged in a huge arse shed under a car cover. Will pull it out once annually and give it a run. appart from that.
No news is good news i guess. 馃槈

Hired a trailor and took the ol' girl out to our other property today. The shed is almost complete, all thats remaining is the roof and garage doors and shes all done. The delays have been with power factor. We have been using a generator for everything and its made it difficult. Powercor assure us the power will be connected first thing in the morning. YAY! As for a daily driver i have bought myself a 1996 VS Series 1 Statesman (Ecotec V6). It tows the beetle like a dream considering its only a v6 but they put out over 300nm of torque and power is up there @ 147kw. It will make the resto process and transportation heaps easier than relying on others to do the towing for me. Everything should start to roll pretty soon. Just a few more minor debts to clear and i can then start pouring money into the beetle again. :thumb

That's one sweet looking bug
BLUE_62 路
Hey hey hey!
just a quick update. Beetle has been sittin out our shed for 4 weeks. Went out and fired it up. Motor spun once and fired. This re-assures me that i am sticking with the 1600 i have a base plant motor. Its just too damn reliable and runs like a sewing machine to chuck it and start again. keep ya eyes peeled at the 4 sales section. All the bits off my beetle that will be getting replaced will go up for grabs. Everything from seats, bumpers, even the carpet thats pretty smick still.
All the best to everyone... 馃槈

Is this low enough? or do i want to invest in drop spindles? Its only one spline at the back and the front is as low as it will go, however still running 165 tyres. 145 will drop it a little lower.
