The better half reckons her 1600 beetle does 85mph (on a privately owned, no speed limit German autobahn north of Wollongong) Is that good?
What can a stock (or silly) beetle wind out to before either meltdown or terrifying high speed handling occurs?
I guess spending money on handling comes into it as much as power, but is it possible to have a performance car?
barls ·
i got my 1700 big bore up to 140Km before backing off due to winds
57kombi ·
As fast as the tow truck carrying it can go.

i can get my 1600 up to 140, but its mainly due to the kads. My old 1600 didnt fell comfortable pusing past 100, but that was a semi-auto and didnt have dual kads.

barls wrote:i got my 1700 big bore up to 140Km before backing off due to winds
mmm...got my 67' with a 1640 up to 140km/h too, then she started to feel real floaty in the tail so I back right off.
something about the air clinging to the curved shape and it lifts the car up at high speed. fluid dynamics and all that. An old guy told me about it once. you put the convex side of the spoon right near running stream of water and the edge of the stream of water gently pulls it sideways right into the main stream. got an italian name, the 'canneloni' or 'luigi' effect or something.
so over 100mph you need a rear wing of some sort. that's what they found racing beetles at bonneville,
but please don't hear me telling people to put awful whaletails on their cars? :cussing
:puke
barls ·
hey peter i only say 1700 big bore cause i dont know if it was a 1640 or 1680 due to the pistons being left over from when he was young and stupid

that's cool, I just meant I had a similar experience, I don't mind if you have a 2.8L :P
pete wood ·
oh BTW, I've had my buggy (a 2.5l) up to 80mph. that was no where near the top of 3rd gear and it felt even worse than the beetle, the whole thing started to shake. 🙁
so I spose I'll take it easy, beside you nearly get blown out of the car :o

160km/hr on the dot, at 5000rpm on the dot. thats in a L bug with a 1776cc, twin dells, mild cam etc. It produces about 70hp at the rear wheels (assume about 100hp at the fly wheel), std gb and 205/60r15 and lowred.
I have an old book (70's) that has a graph of Hp vs speed for a beetle, eg to get x mph you require y hp at the engine. its a rough guide.
i think 100mph requires rougly 100hp, which is right for my car.
BiX ·
and on the track i got to about 130km/r in 3rd, that was today :thumb and wasn;t looking for 4th :blush

Umm, does downhill on the Hume count? if so I managed to get a stock 1600 to 100mph, well I saw 160kmph touched by the needle anyways. Scared the b:jesus out of myself doing it. was light as crap and had to slow down gently to stay on the road.

i don't have a beetle..i have a golf...

Got a stock 1300 lowered with 14's to 75mph down Richmond rd. Didn't feel real good at this speed but it will handle 65mph no worries at all. I thought it was bloody impressive of the old girl to go that fast. Not an experience I want to do again in a hurry.

I've had my wifes Golf at 210 Ks I was going for 220 Ks but ran out of road.
And I've had my XR8 up to 230 Ks.
But do you what I like the most ?
I knew a Bloke once who would tell me he did something like 245 Ks in his Old VC Commodoore, but his speedo only went to 200 Ks.

MUD BASHING ANYONE ?? ·
I had my kombi wound out to 155kph on the way back from valla last year right beside my mate in his splity really scary but fun and i had the baja out to 85 mph on my spedo which is way out due to 215/75s on the front and that was the only time i really was shiting myself, that speed is not good with over a foot of ground clearance and mud terrains
ancientbugger ·
Our old kombi with standard 1800 but in v.good condition used to sit happily on 130kph until my wife discovered that it had retread tyres at the back. Tread comes off grabs mudflap rips upwards tearing the back upwards and throwing the battery all over the engine! Used to have a standard 1300 beetle (at the time only a couple of years old) but sat on 80mph on the motorway, and that was as standard so nobody had been pulling things apart or altering anything.......I did all that later:duh

have had my 76 v6 kombi to approx 180kph ( needle stopped on the wrong side of the zero marker . didn't handle too well at that speed .
had my 69 IRS rotary beetle to 195kph @ 9500rpm in 3rd gear then shifted to 4th and backed off at 220kph . handled worse than the kombi .
had the 62 hillclimb beetle to 165kph @ 7600rpm in 4th gear uphill on a narrow winding track with a 2.9 injected type-4 engine . heaps of fun and handled great!!
took the dual-cab for a squirt last week and got to 160kph with a 2.5 type-4 big valve weber engine . p*ssed off the japcrap I destroyed .

Hey,
My beetle is a stockie 1300 bored to 1600, running a standard carby and nothing special. I had it to just over 85mph and had a little left. Was in hot pursuit by a new yellow beetle and i cant help but get the funny feeling the new beetle was in 5th and cruisin. :duh
But yeah. We'll say it maxes @ 90mph so that 145km/h.
Not bad for a stocker i thought. Dunno what revs. No tacho. Enough to make u hear the motor over wind and road noise thou. 😎
Starbug ·
my 1600 has been driven at 140km/h. im sure it could have gone faster but i didnt want to try.
barls ·
i think i only need a 2.1L t4
Anthiron ·
once and once only on a windless day i took my baja to 90 mile/hr thats max on the speedo however ive got smaller profile front wheels and tires on atm so it was prolly about 130kms/hour still not too bad. i found it was fine while i was accellerating but had to back off really slowly or it wanted to jump around. never will do it again and i hate to think of what would have happend had a bullet of wind hit the car.
i generally cruise at 70-75 m/ph which is a little slower than standard highway traffic but i dont mind.
cant wait to get the 2 litre into i though.....gonna have to get a ball joint front end though i think.
Che Castro ·
My stock '63 with a 1600 SP has been up to about 120km/h and it had a fair bit more in it. It just felt pretty scary at that speed, swing axle on the rear, K&L on the front, all with little to no alignment! bit hairy. specially when it rains

Any verifying speedo shots must be accompanied by a stat dec stating the photo was not taken with the car parked in the garage!
No tacho equals extra verification.
Menangler ·
Darn, found me out, spun mine up on the cordless drill.
BLUE_62 ·
Tried mine out earlier tonight again too see if i could improve on an earlier attempt. The speedo was wavering past the 90mph almost on the ignition light so that would be pretty close to 100mph i would guess. I had my camera with me but there was no way i was takin hands off the wheel. It needs an alignment pretty bad and its running re-treads at the minute while my new tyres are coming and rims are getting powdercoated 😎
When its all back together i'll have another crack and see if i can get a snap shot. :thumb
twoguns ·
hey dave... that one looks stationary...
i got a second to verify the first.... happens very often. will have to include a tacho shot, hey....

yeah its only just. 6200rev red line (it wont do much past that) and that is around the 220 mark. was all i could get. if only they had the turbo available. mind you this car had ony been released two weeks b4, and the one i had had a mere 147klms on it when i got it.

mm well ours had a good 20000ks on it..and was only at 3500in 5th. so i think we could've gotten a fair bit more from it.

So I guess I need to get the 15's back on the Beetle to break the 70mph factor in the stock 1300 swing axle! Anyone done anything with 14's versus 15'?
Freddie Fender ·
Come to think of it the scariest drive I have done was in a Mini Cooper at 120mp +. Needle was in the middle of the Fuel gauge past the 120mph mark. Speed this close to the ground in a go kart is rather exhilirating! Only taken the Alfa to 200Kph before my conscience got to me and the worry about the las with a blue light on the top of the car started to trouble me.... Actually, the Alfa felt no different at 200 than it does at 100.......if anything it sat on the road even more snugly.

My XR8 goes as smooth at 240 as it does at 100K's , the Car Harmonics are perfect it has a Massive Alloy Tail shaft.
If the dotted white lines hadn't become one long line, I wouldn't even know I was going that fast.
Al Walker ·
I've had my R32 up to 230km on the South East Freeway very early one morning when it was totally empty, thats with chip and CAI. Marti will confirm it as she was in the passenger seat watching the speedo for me. The car still had a lot of pedal and revs left in it.
The chip removes the speed limiter and up's the rev limiter to 7200rpm.
Track day coming up on Sunday but i doubt the straight will be long enough to find out top speed. Have to take it to a track with a long enough straight or a decent airstrip or the NT sometime to really give it a run.
Cheers Al

no offence Flying VW,
it's just that I can hear about standard production cars doing mental speeds anywhere. I am just a bit more interested in hearing about what VWs are capable of...that's all.
I could buy any number of non-VW cars and make them do 200plus km/h. What i want to know is what your humble baja is capable of? Cool? 😎
