Diff lockers for VW's

https://forums.aussieveedubbers.com/threads/32064/diff-lockers-for-vws

Secoh ·

Out of curiosity I emailed a 4x4 accessory mob asking about diff locks for VW cases, and got this back:

I believe we can get a lockright or similar for these diffs, They sell for $899.
We don't have in stock, but place orders with the states every month.
Let me know what you'd like to do.

Just thought I'd let you all know.

Andy42 ·

Well if you wait a month or so I will tell you if one of these work in a buggy or not . Some say yes and some say no so I am just going to try and see once and for all. I was told when i bought it though that they are not making the VW ones anymore but I guess this could have changed. I know i got it a fair bit cheaper then that price but it was old stock they had on their shelf at. http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/

Secoh ·

how much was that one?

Andy42 ·

It was teh lock rite one ( from teh states) and I scored it for $599 but it took them 3 weeks to find it on their shelf and They reckon it cost them that much. It was a bit of a on the side deal as when I got the reciept it said I paid full price for it which was about 850 I think from memory.

Secoh ·

looking at the Lokka one now, that looks like a good compromise too

MUD BASHING ANYONE ?? ·

When someone gives this ago please let me know how it goes and i beleave that some kombis had Lsd i think the tracka campers can these still be bought?

so Locka actually make one for VWs?

Secoh ·

says so at the bottom of the page in list of manufacturers, however they have not got back to me.

pete wood ·

just did a search and put in an enquiry with this mob

http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/html/contact.htm

are these the guys you are talking to Secoh?

Secoh ·

yeah think so.

Baja Wes ·

After driving Brad's Hilux for the week, which has a detroit style locker in the back, I'll say that one would absolutely suck in a VW.

In the Hilux if you pull out of a T-interestion and attempt to accelerate it will lock. In the hilux it simply means squealing the inside rear tyre, in a VW it would mean serious understeer and no turning.

Also on sweeping corners it would try and make the car run straighter, such that when you put the clutch in to change gears it would suddenly steer tighter until you let the clutch back out. It would be more noticeable in a VW.

That's my 2 cents 🙂

Secoh ·

I agree, though the claim of the "Lokka" is it does not operate the same as a detroit, ie, it won't lock at low differential speeds such as cornering. This is their claim anyway. 🙂

pete wood ·

A mate of mine is right into 4wds. He says it depends how the diff is set up. If it's too tight, then it's noisy and annoying. Probably similar to what you are talking about.

The other thing to consider is that, hiluxs have absolutely no weight in the back. VWs do. Surely the weight would help the diff to be smoother as well?

Andy42 ·

Well as i said before I will be able to tell you very soon if they are shit or good as mine is in the gear box and ready to go into the buggy very soon. I guess at least then we will know for sure without just guessing.

pete wood ·

you heard anything yet Secoh?

they haven't contacted me yet.

Andy42 ·

If you are waiting for this mob http://www.4wdsystems.com.au/html/contact.htm
to get back to you good luck as they are who I bought my diff lock from and I had to call them all the time even when they said they would be the ones to call me back.

pete wood ·

where are they Andy?

pete wood ·

just talked to two different 4wd places about the Lokka. They said it's not very progressive at all and quite noisy. The teeth are straight cut as opposed to ramped as in the lock-right. Unfortunately they don't make lock-rights for VW anymore either. 🙁

have you put your's in yet?

Secoh ·

noisy for a plush prado may not be audible at all in a VW LOL

shame they don't make either any more, don't like my chances of finding a second hand one.

Andy42 ·

I have mine installed into a reco 2L box and it is in the buggy waiting for the rest of it to be finished. I am hoping it will be on the road around mid January as their is a lot of work to do yet. And it has a lot of different mods that we will see if they work when the time comes.

If ya'll would be willing to buy a locker kit from the US, I might be able to help you out. Gary Miller of Miller FI in Oregon is working on a locker kit using a Synchro diff, modified tranny case, and an engagement mechanism of his own design. It would be under $1000 US, less depending on how complete the kit is. Let me know if you are interested, and I will let Gary know.

A M8 of mine has fitted a Lokka to his Hi-lux.
No, their not progressive in any way but no true locking diff is apart from an LSD really.
It does clank a bit during very slow tight cornering and will promote a big slide in the wet due to the fact that this design drives the inside wheel only when "differentialing", (Ie: cornering) with a big footful of horsepower but this is to be expected.
The inside wheel will try to spin and the diff will lock up.
Apart from that he is quite happy with it as a day to day driver and reports no other dramas.
Just a little more care in the wet.

dubbill ·

id really like 2 know how this went if it did at all cos i have a pan with a lockrite 091 sitting in it just waiting for the body to be fitted which should be on b4 the years out😎

mackaymanx ·

Another option

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=94043

probably as rare as the lockrite

so have we worked out the cheapest option for this? if you were to buy one this would replace the need to have to get an lsd of superdiff right? so all you would need is one of these and some HD side covers and you have a box that can handle some faily good power? i know they are ilegal to drive on the road, but my mate has a locker in an r32 skyline thats on the road, but its really noisy, but then again the vw is alot noiser than the rb20 in the engine department so i don't think you would even be able to hear it. i would be really interested in knowing how they make driving.

bajaben ·

also, are these the whole diff? or just like an insert into a stock diff, cause then you would still have to buy a super diff and in that case be cheaper almost to get an lsd 🙂 im looking at this seriously because although illegal, im looking at getting the 2 drive wheels going. can make life easier when trying to drift. any feedback would be appreciated.

tassupervee ·

No not the entire center.

The parts are placed into the diff cage where the sun gears once lived.

The Lokka diff is an embarrasingly simple design and works well as far as a locking diff is concerned.
They work kind of similar to an LSD except that all the power is sent to the inside wheel when cornering. The outer wheel simply freewheels.
If the inside wheel trys to turn faster than the outside wheel, the center locks the axles.

They workwell enough as a daily driver. A bit dodgey in the wet tho.

makntracks ·

just have to ask! my rear diff in my hilux is welded is there any way i can do a similar thing to my baja with a kombi box.
thanx
mick

bajaben ·

hmm. so i would still need to buy the super diff? or would it make it strong enough to be able to use the stock diff? im still not gonna be dumping it at 7000 rpm on slicks so its more for the fun of it, those who know what i mean will understand :P

Baja Wes ·

a welded or locked diff in a vw would be virtually undrivable. I couldn't turn on the road in my baja when my diff broke and locked itself.

Some guys on the gold coast put a locker in a manx buggy, and found it to be rather undrivable. I think they removed it and I heard rumours of an air locker being developed.

mackaymanx ·

I think the syncro diff is the way to go, it's just to rare and expensive.

bajaben ·

so just get a super diff instead? i heard that gene berg make a shim kit that makes a normal diff act like a lsd, has anyone got experience with them?

58 Baja ·

There is a company in Australia that have a braking system that acts like a locker. I plan on putting one in my Baja. The cost is about $1200 Aus and includes an electric compressor. I think that it works like ABS but in reverse. It uses the compressed air to force brake pistons that lock the slipping wheel.
I have seen a competition 4wd rig a at few of the 'Tuff Truck' events and it works well.
The good thing is you can turn it on or off and it makes cool noises while it is working. You should also be able to keep your turn brakes.
I'll chase up a link if any one is interested. I think it is a Queensland Company 'Halltec'?

MickH ·

Link????🙄

Yes I have that berg part in my daily driver (66 beetle) its good, but a bit noisy and contrary to what you might think its good in the wet I am not 100% sure what the part is as I bought the gearbox reconditioned with it installed.
the work was done by a formula vee guy Dave Coullts I have tried a few times to call this guy to find out exactly what I have got as I like it, but I want him to drive it, to verify it should be that noisey....

Just spoke to him and he tells me that it is simply shims to stop play in the diff this locks the axles and they are a berg part... I have arranged for him to drive my car to determine whether the noise is usual or not...

[ Edited on 13-6-2006 by silver ]

bajaben ·

im not worried about the noise i just want the diff to lock. if you could get the info on that it would be awesome. cause it seems like it might be cheaper to do that with a superdiff than it would be to get a locker or a lsd. anyone with anymore ideas

Baja Wes ·

I have a factory Vanagon superdiff in my Baja.

The Gene Berg poor man posi-shim kit is basically just some extra shims for the diff to preload the spider gears against each other and make it difficult for them to work properly. This gives a slight locker effect. It is for swingaxle only.

http://www.geneberg.com/cat.php?cPath=12_382_2915

When I had my gearbox built I asked for the diff to be shimmed as tight as possible (if possible). I didn't ask if this was achieved, but if you have enough power I find both wheels try to spin anyway.

On the subject of gearboxes for offroad, this website is quite good;
