hmmmm Just realised how tightly the standard spare fits in its little possie in a late standard beetle. I now hav 195s instead of 165s so where do I put the spare now>?
Starbug ·
you could always have a mismatched spare?
stick it in the back seat and tell your passengers not to mind the spare wheel?
Gibbo ·
Hmm, very good question.
I will be running wider rims as well so god knows what I will do with my spare!
Arse.
pod ·
just have a standard wheel as a spare, like the ricer mobiles with their little donut wheel😉
Starbug ·
how embarrasment! having to be a ricer with a puncture and using your crappy little spare wheel...
oh no.. the homiez will b larfin and the huniez wont b tinkin u so fly...
ive got wide wheels, and i just keep the original spare in the front... sure they are different diameters and sizes, but at least it will get you to the nearest tyre shop...
BettyBoop ·
Same here with me Starbuggy,
I've had to do a change when i was in brissy n drive with a spare all the way to the Sunny Coast and for the sake of it getting you somewhere, who cares if its slightly different sizing.
Ciao

We are running 5.5" Empi 5s and have one as a spare with a spacesaver 125/15 spare tyre on that fits OK. As has been said...it'll get ya home! Most important thing is, if you are running alloys and a stock spare, consequently you'll have longer bolts in the wheels. Make sure you have a set of stock bolts to bolt your spare on, otherwise they'll rip your brakes outta your drums!😉
barls ·
at the moment i run the stock spare but when i get the rim i dragged along the road fixed ill be using it as a spare
ancientbugger ·
What about us poor sods with beach buggies?!
ruckus ·
Will a 145/15 on a 5.5 rim fit in the spare wheel well? Has anyone tried this?
buzzbug ·
i run 165s on the front and 185s on the rear
so i just run a standard spare.
Anthiron ·
i have a 196/65 r14 spare sitting on top of the fuel tank in my baja. fits snug.
i also carry a can of that tyre weld stuff just in case
BiX ·
just run a std spare, enough to get me home. I have 3 different sizes of tire including the spare. if i run a odd size on the rear, put 2 wheel in the dirt and plant every now and then to stop wind up occuring in the diff.
and a can of weld stuff, just in case
ruckus ·
Yeah the problem is that I have a matching alloy rim as a spare so I'm trying to see what tyre I can put on it so that it will fit in the same place as the standard which is an inch narrower (4.5 as opposed to 5.5)
wibble ·
buggy guys (or any serious off roaders) look into the "second air" bead locks, unless you get a total tyre separation you will be able to limp home on these babies, haven't got them yet but they are the sh*t!!!!

Most flat tyres these days are caused by a nail or screw usually.... so if You find it flat just use a $20 compressor to pump it up and it will probably stay pumped up for at least a day... Don't pull the screw or nail out.... plus when the tyre pressure gets to a certain level, it stops leaking usually, so there is always some air in the tyre..... I have driven a flat Michelin until I wore the side wall out... I didn't notice it until I went round a round about.... that was 100 kms at 100 kph in a type 3....
I know people are finding it hard to fit a 165 x 15" tyre into the wheel well.... in a standard beetle.... I know many who still have a 5.60 x 15" crossply tyre in there... the one that came with the car....
I think I will just have a can of that pump up stuff and a $20 compressor....

Be careful of the "can of air" tyre weld and pressure.
That shit will start corroding the rim in hours!
Use it to get home if you must but remove the tyre, properly clean the rim and make sure no residue remains.
A lot of tyre shops won't plug a tyre that has had that poo injected into them as it it almost impossible to get it all off the inside of the tyre.
What Lee said is best, if it aint ripped apart pump it up once or twice and you should be home sweet.

Hi
That punture repair can stuff will also make your wheel way out of balance. I use a 15 inch Porsche space saver, previous to this I had a 4 stud beetle centre fitted to a Nissan space saver, I think Lowbug owns it now.

Also ppl,
Beware the nasty boy in blue..
Here in qld, the rules were changed a while ago, and (if I recall correctly) you cannot have different wheels or tyres on the same axle, even if it is to 'limp' home.
I was told it is with the boys in blues rights to book you...so may be worth checking how you all stand in that light
Sometimes you get really nice ppls who won't book you, but others just insist on it....
Just thought I would let u know.
Cheers

I have a 4 inch rim fitted with a 145 tyre.
Its only a spare and does not needt omatch the other wheels, as soon as i have a problem its off to the tyre shop for a repair and change over back to the good wheels.

Just had a look on the tyre calculator that andy posted a while ago and it seems that a 175/65 may actually fit better than the 165/80 as it's not much wider and is a little shorter. Any thoughts?
