Crazy Members and Privacy re For sale rules

I had an unpleasant experience a few weeks ago which was generated from some forum posts and conflicting views that I dont care to rehash. The shorts of the story is that one 'CRAZY ' member decided that the way to go was to phone me and threaten me with a baseball bat!
Apart from the fact that he has never seen me ( I am 6 foot 4" and 120 kg and have played second row for the Australian Wallabies ) these were the actions and response you might expect from someone who was known to be 'CRAZY'.
This experience has got me thinking re the For Sale rules and the requirement to enter a phone number. I strongly feel ,as i know others do that this is poor practice and unnecessary, whats more can lead to guzumping where sales are poached from the first intrested posted reply.
If people choose to leave a phone number fair enough however an email and U2U should be sufficient if the seller so choses, after all it is in the sellers best intrests to comunicate.
I also recieved threatening U2Us and from the same forum member and nuisance posts on my for sales. I had to request my postings be deleted. We cant stop people being 'CRAZY ' but lets make it harder for them! Mitchell

As for the phone number, it is essential in my view to a smooth transaction.
Sometimes a simple phone call will save much wasted time in emails and visits when a seller is being a bit vague on details.

If you sell in the tradingpost you need a number, cant be worried about threats etc.

Also, sometimes when you RING a seller you can immediately guage the type of person they are and if they are full of shit or not.
Or how good the stuff for sale is or isnt.
As for being gazumped by somebody who had the drive to ring up instead of doing the slow way, what is the problem?

Security needs to be a concern, reverse phone lookups can be done and stuff can be stolen like this.

I like dealing over the phone, I'm quite happy to put my name and number out there and take my chances with people.

In NSW if you sell a complete car you must advertise (by law) the minimum:

Your name (first name or recognised alias is all that is necessary)
Your phone number
Rego number (if registered)
VIN (if unregistered)

I was suggesting parts and that it be optional .Matt are you sure that this law applies to internet not papers? and what happens If I dont have my own phone?

It's the law, and it's the same as advertising in the Trading Post. The NSW regulations specifically apply to complete cars and are a part of the NSW trading laws.

I will talk to the other admins / forum moderators about relaxing things in Parts as I am reasonably certain we can then match eBay's T&C's.

PS. If anyone threatens you on the forum - virtually or via phone, you can report them to the police and ask for an AVO to be taken out.

Also, immediately notify us, and we will investigate and ban people where appropriate, and check to see if they have made similar threats to other people on the forum. If you wish, we can preserve backups of relevant material for police investigations if a prosecution is likely (in fact, if you supena us, we have no choice, but I'm happy enough to comply as long as we don't violate anyone else's privacy).

Violence is unacceptable. I don't care if you're a second rower - no one deserves to be threatened even if they can handle themselves.

I put my number on a post as it said I had to, that's the rules so I followed 'em, but I see your point...
As for threats with a baseball bat, well, I've been a towie in the unregulated Perth Towing industry for a fair number of years. We class Baseball Bats as Tools of Trade, and are therefore a tax deduction...:P

i understand its the law but i get some random ppl ringing me at any hour, asking me about all sorts of shit, nothing ever threatening but i feel im being intruded upon, i ask how they know me they said they got my number off the forum on a sale post. i would only b too happy to answer emails and u2us asap if i wanted to sell somethign, and giv out my number to those serious about buying. but yeh, if its the law i guess its the law...

IMHO phone numbers should only be handed out in private as part of a sale. Considering this is an internationally accessed forum and not a trading post, and that people don't pay money to advertise or access sellers NSW laws regardin this are unlikely to apply. On top of that if it's law in Karachi that sellers must wear a kilt whilst yodelling, following the current logic you'll have to enforce that too.

from your phone number people can get your home address if they have access to an upside down search, and a number of other means. This can lead to your precious VW being stolen or your house burgled.

I choose to use ebay to sell my VW stuff because of the rules here, which is fine. If someone sells something in the trading post they have a number and a suburb. ebay they have an email. trading post readers don't usually have a computer, ebay users don't bother with phones. welcome to the new world, adapt or suffer.

I work for the department of fair trading here in Parramatta, the rules don't apply to ebay because it is an Auction. When you go to private car auctions you don't get the home number of the people selling the car, the Auctioneers act as a mediator between both parties. If you want an Auction then put it up for sale on Ebay, if not Post here with your details and Phone number.. it's the law. The moderators have a tuff enough time dealing with other stuff.. so don't get them in trouble because of your own problems.

I have had people call me at all hours to ask me what else I have thats not on the forum. Also I've had people call and ask for my address to have a look at what I'm selling. Then whilst here they say that they're not interested but insist on hassling me about what accesories I may have. Which is not only inpolite and time wasting but just plain moronic.

I think you should let everyone else know who threatened you with a baseball bat. They might have a problem with it, but I'm sure they're going to feel no worse than what you did when you were threatened. And I for one (since I use this place to sell all my VW stuff) would like to know if someone who is there looking at parts and getting peoples addys is likely to give me the same treatment.

Cam,I have no trouble saying that it was Crazy George he promised to visit me over christmas with his bat and more ( he would need one i guess)
. I offered him my address. He also sent me a couple of offensive U2Us ,This was all because I offered him $300 for a gearbox that was untested and not quaranteed he wanted $500 but had severeal times asked for interest.
At the time at which he did this I posted on his add that I would no longer enter into the argument. He then posted moronic opinions on a few of my for sales. I had those ads deleted. If you check his profile he appears to use the forum almost exclusively for braking VW and selling them in parts he posts nearly exclusively in For sales.
I did get a little sarcastic but did pull back ,make peace etc , and did nothing to warrent his response.
I have not been disturbed at all, you know concerned just dissapointed its not what this forum is about.
Anyway spilled my guts bring it on!

It is pure and simple .. if you don't want to post your number then stick on ebay.. its a good alternative and youll probably get better price for whatever your selling anyway. There's no arguement about it .. apparantly it's the law and we have to stick by this.. remember we have to respect our fellow human beings twoguns... it's called kharma

Its strange how some forums in OZ want you to ad phone numbers and other forums in oz tell you your post will be deleted if you ad a contact number.

I have to say I agree with mitch and secoh. I dont like posting my phone number on the forum as it can be accessed by anyone in the world and it is archived for as long as this forum is online.

I have made lots of sales without posting my phone. I usually exchange phone numbers privately thru u2u if necessary. I dont think phone numbers should be compulsory. Maybe we could just make it ok if the seller adds "u2u me for phone number" or something like that.

or just put a wrong number on the board and they will u2u saying it doesnt work :vader

after the sale is completed remove ur phone number.
i put my phone number in search and found every old post that had it then erased it. at least that will stop it being archived a little bit.

i got sick of getting calls from people who had searched for my number on this forum.

Maybe this is something else that needs to be looked at as well....I hate having to screen calls myself

I find exchanging phone number via u2u a better option once a sale has been made or being finalised...u2u ping pong can get frustrating...better to talk real time much quicker

the first time I posted my number on here someone called it quite late, and I swear they just called to confirm the number I posted was correct. conversation was something along the lines of:

"hullo"
"yes, hi, is this Secoh from the forums?"
"Yes, are you interested in the (whatever it was, can't remeber)"

Hey, My Numbers there, below all the time, never had any probs, did have a few probs via email though, some threats etc, as i live in tassie i offered to buy him a one way ticket plane ticket to my place, seemed to do the trick!, most of the threats are from guys with very small dicks so they make up with there mouth, i am 6.3 (ask jen) and never get any probs, i dont go looking for it either
